Hi guys!
Browsed the registry yesterday and found some stuff... the cam seems to have three settings for video resulotuion, high medium low, but there is only low and medium in the camera app, is there any way to unlock or whatever to be able to record higher quality (240x320 maybe??) vids? It might work fine if you run 240 mzh or more?
It seems that you can change the framerate too?
found it in hklm software htc camera
I have tried a higher resolution with a webcam app, but I don't remember the name of it. I think 320x240 still worked pretty good, higher resolutions were not really possible! So if you try to modify the registry, could you report back?!
Sure i tried some stuff yesterday, but it didnt work, ill work on it
found a way to unlock sports, burst and panorama mode in the cam app,
also managed to get 240x320 as a choise in video mode but when i select it the phone just "works" you know the round small rotating thing......
ill do some more research and then post all reg tweaks here... why havent anyone played with this before?
There is also this but it is buggy. If I remember correctly this allow to take higher res videos but the framerate is really bad.
Should be more people intrested in this...
Well i got higher res as an option in the cam app, but i think ill need a dll from a phone who supports higher res

Im going to try and make this short.
I realize this may not be the best place to ask but i know you guys are the best to ask.
What are the best 1) resolution 2) bit rate 3) quality settings for encoding video for the gtab that give you a nice picture and dont break the ram bank.
At 768x450 2000bits/sec My test movie is 1.3gb. At the native 1024x600 the file size hits in the 1.7gb neighborhood (nice looking but probably not feasible unless i am only going to put one or two movies on here at a time...would like to do 5 or 6)
I tried it at 512/300 (50% of the native resolution) and a bit rate of 800bps and did manage to get the file at around 500mbs but the quality was just sub par for my tastes (fuzzy VISIBLY jerky).
Rather than me testing for days and days..i was wondering what settings you guys had set on (and why).
Thanks!
Allen
Edit: The H.264mp4 format was causing artifacting that i couldnt fix at any setting..
Right now i am using .mp4 at 768x450 (or a 75% scale of the native resolution) and a bit rate of 1,500 with the sound set at DVD quality (which actually does help since i use blue tooth head phones). File size still just at 1gb (that maybe about the smallest i can do with the quality i like). Even at that setting...its still a tad jerky. What should i try? Lowering the resolution and upping the bit rate a tad more???
Still wanting to know if any of you guys have a magic setting for me!
The good news here is that i am not loading my up memory with mp3/songs (have an iphone for that) using pandora radio instead. Regular apps dont take up too much room so i figure i probably have around 10G to play with for video. (when vegan gets the SD card utilizatin fixed ill have another 8G on top of that).
Bump:
Still looking for settings suggestions.
I am using 720X480 @ 1,500kbs in MP4. This gets me ~1.2gb files. It is the actual resolution of a DVD, which is where my material is sourced. This lets the display device do the scaling, rather than the encoding process.

Duh that makes total sense!
Testing now.
Any ideas what the "video quality output settins are". 1 is best, 32 is worse. 26 is recommended.
I dont have much to go on. I see the recommended settings for an ipad are 1335 bit rate and a quality setting of 24.
UPdate: When i did a test run with higher settings i noticed the video would lag every three or four seconds. I concluded that the settings were too high for the hardware to handle. Likewise when i set them too low..it was jerky, and i concluded the bit rate was too low for smooth frame rates.
At 720x480 1500Bits (and a "quality setting of 24"). The lag is MUCH better, but it still lags about every 20 seconds or so (very briefly). I will test at 1400bits/26q and see what happens.
Jeeze! A lot of work.... its too bad someone hadnt already figured all this out and just given me the quick answer! lol
Thanks again for the answer!
You should be able to play 1080 with no lag?
Sent from my V9 using XDA App
You may want to grab a program called Mediainfo. This program analyzes the video file and tells you what profile was used, video and audio encoding stats. I was using this to make sure my source and output files were not using the "High" profile. I have some 1080 files re-encoded under the "Simple" profile and they look great with zero lag. I have re-encoded all my files with Handbrake and the all work without lag.
I used the info listed in roebeet's FAQ post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=842899

BUT why when the screen resolution is only 1024x600?
DONT need media info unless reatail dvds are encoded with more than one setting Are they?
I saw roebeets post about using the ipad settings but that makes no sense. THE ipad has a different resoultion and a less powerful processor.
I am getting lag at 720x450 1500bits but not at 720x450 1400 bits. Very interesting.
I stumbled across this video created by khalpowers on the XT720:
http://vodpod.com/watch/5015769-hd-recording-30-fps-xt720
This tells me that it's possible to get 30FPS out of this phone. Mine is only recording at 21fps according to Windows.
Will using one of khalpowers' ROMs fix my camcorder app?
I've tried the lgcamera app and I still get only 21FPS.
If any of you have any insight into this I would really appreciate it.
So I installed khalpowers' camera update and things seem smoother now, but I don't get 30fps. In Fraps I'm getting between 21fps and 24fps. It's better than it was before, but still not quite as smooth as I would like. The shutter lag in the camera is also better after the update.
Is this phone even capable of 30fps at 720p? The specs seem to say it can only do 24fps.
It can only do 24 FPS.
try khals video settings in lgcamerapro app. it allows for recording in 30fps.

It turns out that the FPS thing is really difficult to evaluate. This is because the phone records variable bit rate. The actual rate recorded seems to depend on how much light is hits the camera sensor (i.e. brighter scenes get higher framerates and darker scenes get lower framerates which makes sense to me).
To make things even more confusing the file contains a number as a "guesstimate" of the frame rate. This guesstimate is what most programs show. Unfortunately, the guesstimate seems to be incorrect most of the time. IIRC the only thing we found that seemed to show us the actual framerate was Windows Media Player in Windows 7.
There's a lot more about this in Dexter's stock221v13 development thread. Page 126 of that thread seems to be in the middle of it http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939644&page=126 I think it started here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11630078#post11630078 but it's really spread out.
Can someone post a link to kahl's camera update and khal's LGCamera settings. And should I apply the update if I'm running StealEpicBlue, or the ROM already has the update?
Thanks.
Even with lgcamera and khal's settings, the files are still not 30fps. Even watching his sample videos, they don't look any smoother than what I'm getting with his "fix" installed on the default camcorder app.
Anyhow, I can live with 24fps. I just wanted to know if 30fps was possible, and it seems as though it's not.
Thanks everyone for your input.
Perhaps khal can chime in and confirm that his files are indeed 30fps. IMO Fraps is a good way to verify it.
Higher rate on xt just 24fps.....that video from eclair..now can produce better than that with airplane mode ..
So............... does we have Camupdate on StealEpicBlue or not?
Thanks.
yes..complete patches included with cam update...

That's why we all ♥ U!
On stock 2.1.1, I did that :http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1088297
but, I mean it's already done in khalpowers ROM
Can someone post the best settings for LG Camera, please?
Thanks in advance.
Hello.
First of all, my compliments to everone that makes great things like custom roms, mods, and so.
I'd like to know if is there a way to mod/improve/change the camera app, so the shutter speed can be set.
Thanks.
Hello again. It seems this thread gained some interest, but no one could give an answer. What I asked was if is there any way to hack, develop, activate improved settings for htc chacha camera.
Videos are saved in 3gp format. Is there any way to make camera app to save them as mp4?
Pictures get blurry if the subject moves quickly, or you are not steady when shooting. Is there any way to set the shutter speed?
I don't know if the camera app can be disassembled or something, and hacked into make that things.
Maybe the camera app can be ported from another model that uses the same camera model, and can do that.
I asked HTC about this, and they answered "latest 2.3.5 version has many improvements", but none about the camera...
The camera is way better than Wildfire, which my wife owns, but I think it can be even better if the camera app is up to it.
Thanks for reading.
The big question revolving around this issue is if the cameras themselves are the same between the phones. It's not only the camera.apk that's connecting them, it's the hardware as well. Yes, there could be a possibility that the cameras are the same, between ChaCha and Wildfire (for example), but at the same time the proc or image sensor might be of a newer generation. Unfortunately I have no hardware specs on this, if anyone knows it would be nice to know.
Question: Do you know of any phone that has advanced settings inside the Camera.apk that allows you to set shutter speed? Would be interesting to compare them a bit.
In the camera.parameters public class there is a setting called scene_mode_sports that seems to be the only way to set a faster shutter speed.
I can't see it in my HTC Chacha/Status, and even lgcamera hasn't that option in the menu.
There is a profile.xml file that sets the limitations of the camera, but it seems people hack it to allow the camera to record movies in higher resolutions, because many times the limitations are imposed by the manufacturer and not the hardware.
Also, hacking the firmware and/or the drivers of a camera would allow to gain the full features of it.
This reminds me of people that upgraded the Nokia N900 to allow it to record movies in 720p, just by replacing binary files in the phone.
Is there an app that tells you what exactly hardware your phone has, and such drivers or modules it uses?
Thanks all.
Hello all.
I'm reviving this with some news. The camera module the ChaCha uses is a Samsung s5k4e1gx (http://www.samsung.com/global/busin...t/cmos-imaging/detail?productId=5622&iaId=220), the same found in several other HTC models: HTC Desire Z, HTC Mini and others.
It seems that in the Desire Z this camera is able to record 720p video.
I think this is determined by the firmware loaded for the camera, and the app itself.
I'd like to know if it's possible to port change the original ChaCha camera related modules and firmware from the Desire Z ones, so the camera can get taht 720p video shooting.
Also, I'm searching for a way to disable the auto light metering so a manual can be set. There are many 'better camera' apps in the market but they all seem to improve the original camera app itself, instead of getting the most of the actual camera sensor.
Thanks all.
Hey everyone, I have a stock Samsung S4 that I like recording concert videos on.
I had a real big issue with the audio. I might have that fixed with BootlegMic. I have also installed LgCamera in hopes of finding a fixed focus for my video. I found that this app did let me use an external mic that my stock app did not, but I cannot seem to get a decent quality video from it at all
I have tried changing video resolution, video encoder, video bitrates, and file formats. Every conceivable combination that's possible, (I realize any video res past 1920 X 1080 is not supported), but cannot get any video quality even close to the stock video app.
Is there anyone with experience with this problem that can help me get it sorted out?
Thx. Jerry.
This may be late
This may be a late reply, but just in case any one else happens upon this thread, it might be worth looking at Open Camera app. Lots of tweakable settings, fixed focus, exposure lock, external mic, etc.
BTW, I just put together a bootlegMIC and it is fantastic.
Hey there,
it's really ridiculous. I'm either blind or disappointed on the play store and I really hope you can help me out. Until now I was driving with Camera MX that can take videos and pictures and has something called live shot, so I won't miss great moments. Unfortunately, it does not take continuous shots in full quality, instead it records a video and let allow me to select the frames I want to export as images.
This sucks in term of quality. I'm looking for an app that takes real shots. I rather want high quality with lesser shots per seconds, however most apps target for speed and decrease quality. Another big thing is I want to record videos with it, too. And this is the moment were every burst shotter fails.
I'd like to have aperture, ISO value, and exposure time settings for better night photos, too. Half of the apps did not even adjust brightness on my LGG4 (CM13), but none of them fulfilled my expectations.
I really hope anybody can help me out with that. Thank you!
For anybody who came here for the same reason, I found this website: https://softwarerecs.stackexchange....ith-shutter-mode-easy-manual-config-and-video
At the end I decided to go for OpenCamera, because A Better Camera seems not to work on CM.
