Question to all rom flashers. What do you do to restore all your apps and settings to a new rom (once flashed). From searching, it seems that you can't backup and then restore as some unique keys in the registry are different, so the restore is pointless.
Does anyone have any helpful tips ?
Many Thanks

You will not get any answer of this question because you wont be able to back up applications. But you can back up all your calender item, sms, files, contacts etc but not application.
best way - I used to do before for registry is...
1 - Make a fresh hardreset
2 - take a registry backup
3 - do all your settings
4 - take a backup
5 - find the difference (means this is YOUR PERSONAL registry)
6 - keep th difference as your registry and apply on any FLASH
Hope this helps
And you probably want to download UC compatible roms

How do you find the difference kumar ?
Thanks for all the replies

You may also want to look at Settings Saviour which has configurable XML files that allow you specify what registry trees you want to import/export, which UC still does not do.
I use Sprite Backup. If you are upgrading teh same version ie 6.1 to 6.1 it will transfer your programs. If its 6.0 to 6.0 the same. It doesnt work from 6.0 to 6.1. I am able to flash between roms. you can get it from here. http://pocketcentral.blogspot.com/

Thanks everyone for providing a great resource here.
I've searched and searched but I can't find inthe forum or the wiki a difinitive guide to restoring your device after upgrading. if possible can someone make a wiki or if I have somehow missed it point me in the right direction?
what I know is limited, but here maybe the start of a wiki
After using the guides to upgrade your PPC, you want to get it back to how it was before
1.Activesyc device (but it looses previous settings can this be fixed?)
2. restore just mail using Spb backup (is this safe? does anyone know of a better way to get your MMSs and SMSs back?
3.make a CAB with all the files and settings using winCE CAB manager (if anyone can help a little here that would be great)
how do we install progs to storage card?
in regards to adding registry keys, I assume we backup the registry then change the settings and/or install the programs that we want then compare the current registry with the previous one and then whatever new has been added then this is what we should add?
4.do we have to reinstall programs that sync seperately? eg phatnotes or ewallet?
Thanks
I can answer a little for you,
1 = only wm2003 can restore more than pocket outlook info
2 = spb is not safe for upgrades, though I have read of people doing it. Try PIM Backup v1.9 (Release date 15/05/2007) by dotfred
3 = make your own extended rom (or even your own rom). or keep cab files for everything on a storage card in one file, and install one after the other after a flash.
4 = i don't understand the question
try sprite backup. it is able to restore accross rom upgrades
Ok this is a newb question but is there any integration between these three?
I would like to do some relatively basic customization to ROMs I install and be able to reapply them. It would also be nice to work in a PC environment and test there. Any guidance?
I guess you can backup either smartphone or emulated device via activesync with more expensive version of sprite backup, and then restore the backup to any device or emulator again... should be enough.
As far as I know, it's not possible to emulate the ROMS on a PC using an emulator. I remember someone else asking about this. Yep... you're reviving part of this topic.
ok, forget about the emulator...
If I run sprite backup on a ROM and do a backup, does it just save the changes that I made to the ROM or does it save everything in the ROM?
If it is the former, it would seem that I could reapply my changes to a new ROM after an upgrade...
owner information
carrier MMS and phone information
updated styles
softbutton location assignments
adding new icons
registry install information for programs
added and deleted icons
etc.
...and I could keep reapplying these same changes to new ROM builds as long as the changes didn't break a new build.
Or am I missing something?
If Sprite Backup is only good for a given build and I switch ROM builds every quarter it doesn't seem worth doing a backup.

Well I have even more respect for ROM builders now. I can't imagine having to apply changes without being able to test them in an emulator, although if you can apply your changes to your phone and save that image to make a ROM later, it seems like you wouldn't need Sprite Backup. You would just use the ROM tools to backup your whole ROM.

It's a hit or miss depending on the ROM version. I have noticed that the registry entries among the different versions for WM6 (different builds) are sometimes different enough that registry restores don't always work. Here's been my strategy (you have to do a search yourself for these softwares):
- Connect with Mobile Registry Editor from my PC to phone => backup as separate .reg files all pertinent locations of the registry that I want
- Have a permanent location in my SD card where I can keep these .reg files
- When I have downloaded a new ROM, I use Resco Registry Editor to import the reg files back in registry. Since I'm not importing the entire hive, I have been reasonably successful with this. Note: there are many different ways of importing registry files on the phone; I just like Resco.
Hi there,
I have another question today where I did not find any anwer to by searching the forum.
I am now about to give the Dr. Gonzo WM61 ROM a try. However in the unlikely case I do not like it I would like to go back to the original WM60 ROM provided by HTC.
As my current installation is heavily customized, is there any way to save the current installation and put it back if required? I mean with all settings, installed software etc.?
Something which I can easily do on a Windows PC by using software like Trueimage oder Ghost.
Is there a way to achieve this with Windows Mobile somehow?
Many thanks already for your thoughts.
Have a nice day
Andi
You can use Sprite Backup program but it is not recomanded to restore settings from one rom to another...
No problem with using sprite backup if you revert to your original rom.
Just reflash it. Install Sprite backup. Restore your backup and everything should be back as it was before flashing 6.1.
However if you keep 6.1, then you are better to re-install all your applications rather than restoring from the backup, unless you are carefull to only restore things that do not conflict with the new version.
Yes, heed the above advice. If you are WM6.0 and upgrading to 6.1 - make a complete and self-extracting backup using Sprite Backup. If you decide you don't like WM6.1, drop back to your original ROM and you can restore your backup to exactly how it was prior to your upgrade.
You can merge specific data from 6.0 to 6.1 however registry entries will not come over properly - which means all you can really restore are SMS and PIM.
EDIT: Double Post

This can be done by means enabling the r2sd function in the SPL. Unfortunately this is not really user friendly
Many thanks
Hello,
I am overwhelmed of that many answers and just say a big thank you to all who answered.
Will give SpriteBackup a serious try now, maybe also try the "user unfriendly" r2sd function afterwards.
Many many thanks for you, really making this forum a great platform!

PIM Backup (free app) will do exactly that and backup messages, emails, sms, contacts, calender but not system settings, programs.
For that you will need something like sprite backup etc (paid app).
Of course, if you had a downloaded copy of your stock rom, all you need is the program cabs, and you will always get your programs back

Simple Question about WP Easy Backup
If I made a Full backup with this tool I Will get a Folder at Windows Phone Update with the name of Mobile ID like:
YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY
At properties folder theres a file with a .xml with a line like this:
<DeviceUrlId>zune-tuner://windowsphone/YYYYYYYY%20-%20YYYYYYYY%20-%20YYYYYYYY%20-%20YYYYYYYY</DeviceUrlId>
At restorpoint folder we got an active id.dat with a ID like:
{11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111}
and a folder with the same name:
11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111
In that folder there is a sub-folder called Data and there is a lot of files .dat and .hash
and a another .xml. The .xml got a line like this:
<DeviceId>YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY</DeviceId>
Now if I share my Backup with someone with the same device and change the information like:
YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY - YYYYYYYY to:
XXXXXXXX - XXXXXXXX - XXXXXXXX - XXXXXXXX
<DeviceUrlId>zune-tuner://windowsphone/YYYYYYYY%20-%20YYYYYYYY%20-%20YYYYYYYY%20-%20YYYYYYYY</DeviceUrlId> to:
<DeviceUrlId>zune-tuner://windowsphone/XXXXXXXX%20-%20XXXXXXXX%20-%20XXXXXXXX%20-%20XXXXXXXX</DeviceUrlId>
{11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111} to:
{22222222-2222-2222-2222-222222222222}
11111111-1111-1111-1111-111111111111 to:
22222222-2222-2222-2222-222222222222
When the other person try to restore using the WP7 Easy Backup
The phone will recognize the mobile ID and install my Backup on the other device?
I'm Just courious.
i have tried it but with no luck, every device has its own "serial" i dont know how they name it, but we cant see it, and we cant manipulate it. and this serial wont allow you to do that. i even tried to backup 7720 on a custom ROM, and restore on a other ROM, that also dont work. its like the backup dont realize that this is the same device. and what i seen so far, every backup has its own code in the windows backup folder, try the same device after a update and the name changes also...
Backups are, so far as we know, encrypted with device-specific keys. I think these keys are in the hardware or at least the bootloader; they persist even across hard-reset.
Thanks
Just wanted to express my gratitude since I'm too young to post in the dev forums. Full Backup and restore worked perfectly for me. Got the error message after my phone rebooted due to the fake update, restored, and everything was picture perfect.
HTC HD2 (Back to the Future ROM, xmb Rom 8107.79) = HTC HD7 T9292
When I first bought my HD2 two years ago I was miserable until the official stock rom update helped smoothed out several issues, but even then it felt like a lot was missing in comparison to WM7. Now two years late after applying the Back to the Future ROM with the Mango update, added with this perfect backup solution, I'm really in love with my HD2/HD7 and can afford to hold out til atleast 2013 for the new Cortex-A15 superphones to drop. And even then I'll still hold on to my HD2/HD7 as an extra PMP.
Just a quick one on this. Is it possable to strip the device ID from the backup and create a Rom out of it and maybe modify it somehow for Root, etc ?
I would love to be able to create a rom with alll my Paid apps, then make it have root, then have my own custom rom that if something breaks I dont spend 2 hours installing like 60 apps...
... as I posted *just* a few responses further up:
"Backups are, so far as we know, encrypted with device-specific keys."
Unless you can figure out the decryption key - it's possible, probably without even disassembling the phone, but if you managed it you'd be the first success in a significant list of people to try - you can't even read the backup, much less modify it or flash it as a ROM image.
