HTC Home Weather - Custom Cities do not work but pre installed will - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

I am working with NBD 8.3 with htc home and my custom city does not update. I believe i entered everything correctly in HHC but it still does not work. If i choose a city out of the list it will update. I live in the US and enter the correct zip code and nothing. I did have to delete the accuweather thing from the registry to get the weather to update again. Any help on getting the custom city to work would be great. Ive searched but have found nothing to help.

The custom database is only for locations outside the US&Canada.
If you want to be able to set it up to download weather data for any accuweather location in the US read these: (actually I believe this will work for any accuweather location period but I'm not sure)

Basically, on the second link just download the first linked file which is the signatures cab, copy it onto your phone and install it.
###I know on the second link above there is a specific patch for the BlackDiamond ROM but it doesn't say what version of the BD ROM it is for, I would probably just use the universal patch and if that doesn't work then try the specific BD one###
Then download the universal patch, unzip it on your computer, copy the HTCHome.dll from your phone to that folder on your computer, run the batch file, it will create a cab file, copy that cab file back to your phone and install it.
Then you can use any location that has a valid accuweather location code.
Example NAM|US|CA|OAKLAND
As far as I have seen you can set the location name to whatever you want so long as the location code is correct.
You mention deleting the original host key in the registry so I presume you know your way around the reg, I would recommend editing the location name and location code directly in the registry (I use TotalCommander) on my ROM the reg keys "Location" and "LocationCode" are located at:
\\HKLM\Software\HTC\HTCHome\Weather\Settings\
You can look up your location code by looking at your local forecast on www.accuweather.com
going along with the example above:
www.accuweather.com/us/ca/oakland/...
The part: /us/ca/oakland is what you are looking for, just put NAM in front (stands for North America), and use pipe-bars instead of slashes "|", and use all caps for letters. Also don't include the zip code at all, the correct location code is sufficient.

Am I the ONLY one having trouble changing cities in the Weather app?

Greetings all. Had my Touch Cruise about 3 days, and I love it. I've got iGuidance installed and working great, the music button added to the HTC home screen (I'm happy with 5 tabs for now), Installed PocketCM Keyboard which allowed me to "register" my Skyfire beta (having some trouble streaming audio from kjram.com though), etc.
So this device does EVERYTHING I was doing on my HTC 8525 before it died. EXCEPT being able to add additional cities to the HTC Home Weather Application. I'd messed with this on the old phone, and managed to edit the HH weather file under Windows, replace that file with my own version, and then I could add more local cities to the application, and then view their info whever I pleased.
BUT on the Touch Cruise, I can only copy the HH*blahblah*.xlm file... not replace it. Not even with Total Commander, or after hiding the HTC Home menu, soft booting, and then trying to un-writeprotect the file. Has anyone else had any luck with this? I found a thread from a guy who has some universal unlocker apps and such, but all they did was corrupt the HTC app and I was lucky uninstalling them fixed things without a hard reset.
Thanks!!!
Everything works fine here.
The post below describes how to add your city:

Weather cites
I have been able to add any US city I want changing the buitilt in home plug in for the modified 6 tab package that is offered here.
http://weather.not2advanced.com/files/
Get this modified package and you have an up to date home plug in that you can add cities to
http://weather.not2advanced.com/files/htchome-2.1-n2a.cab
Remember to uncheck the htc home in today settings before you try to copy the modified xml weather files back onto your phone. If you don't it will not copy back
Thanks for the replies. I'm still having trouble so I'm linking to a pic of the problem here.
http://merkman.spaces.live.com/photos/cns!4355EB455D027302!133/
As you can hopefully see, the HH weather file on my Touch Cruise is read-only. And no program I've tried will change that property. What you see here is AFTER unchecking HTC Home from the Today page, doing a soft reset and confirming the HTC Home plug-in is NOT loaded, then connecting with Activesync and trying to change the properties of that file.
I've also used applications on the device, such as File Explorer and Total Commander, but neither of those worked either. Wonder what I dorked up that I can edit the file like others can.
N2A's Weather Patched Files
Go to N2A's site
http://weather.not2advanced.com/files/
He tells you how to do it. If you still are having problems let me know what city you want in it and I will make one for you.
You might also need to disable the HTC Home plugin, if you have one running already, from Start -> Settings -> Today -> Items After doing this you should be able to copy the file to your pc modify it and the put it back and over write the file there.
mpf54 - I know exactly what your saying, disable the plugin BEFORE trying to uncheck read-only, or before overwriting it with a copy I edited on my PC. But I can't uncheck the read-only on the device, as the option is greyed out. And when I copied the file to my PC and edited it (as I did on my AT&T 8525), I couldn't paste my copy onto the Touch Cruise for the same reason (would NOT let me overright the file).
As for N2A's site, I tried following these instructions. But I've been unsuccessful put a copy of my DLL into the directory he specifies and "unlocking" my ROM. And when I tried his "Touch" rom, that didn't seem to work on my phone. I had to uninstall the software so the HTC Home screen would show up on my device again.
So I'm guessing I need to "unlock" my ROM somehow so I can edit the HH weather file that is a part of it. But I have no idea how to do that...
Weather
Get this file.
http://weather.not2advanced.com/file...me-2.1-n2a.cab
It is a repacement htc home that also has the 6 tabs. It is also modified already to be able to get other cities not on the HTC list. After you install this cab file then go in and modify the Weather cities list. This has worked for me on a Touch, a sprint touch and my touch cruise.
mpf - Really appreciate the help, and finally understand how this works.
The version of the weather app on my device seems to be part of the ROM, so I can't edit the HH weather file.
However, when I installed the ROM you suggested, it installs ANOTHER copy of the Weather app, and that version stores a DIFFERENT copy of the HH weather file I CAN edit.
So I just need to copy a version of that file to my PC, edit it with Notepad, and copy it back. Should be golden after that.
Thanks again for your assistance. Just couldn't understand what was wrong previously.
Weather
Glad you got it working. Took me a while to find the solution but that new plugin made it easy.

No, I don't think you are the only one. I am too having problems with my weather. I am living and working in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. i followed the instruction, but when I tried to get the weather for the city. It could not find it.
I'm having trouble with my weather also, but not in the same sense. My problem is the weather report, temps and such is usually wrong by as much as 10 degrees with what the local weather report says which is more or less correct. I usually update manually to save battery. I think I might trial some other weather app and see how that goes. Anyone else with with this problem?
German Tool for HTC-Weather
Hi I'm a german and sorry for my worse english.
I had made a little tool for the german Orbit2 / Polaris-users but i think it may also work for others (link to original post).
Translation:
1. deactivate HTC-Home plugin:
go to "start -> preferences -> today" under "elements" disable the HTC-Home2. Location-Code:
get your location-code under
http://www.accuweather.com/world-ind...her&traveler=0
in the addressbar it should looks like that:
www.accuweather.com/world-forecast.asp?partner=
accuweather&traveler=0&locCode=EUR|DE|GM012|TRIER&metric=13. Change the HTCWeather.dll:
install the CAB-File (N2A Patched Home Plugin DLL.cab)
4. Install my file (HTCWetterXML.cab)
start the program "HTC Wetter XML" and insert the above data (see picture original post).5. activate HTC-Home plugin
6. soft reset
7. test it
the data is entered directly in the registry not in the "HH_0407_WeatherCities.xml". So if you change the city over the plugin the data are lost. You have to restart my program and push the insert button again.
here you can get the files.
hope i could help

cbreze - Afraid not. After loading the "new" HTC Touch app, I needed to set the weather back to F for the temps to make sense to me. But I've been able to add several local cities to my phone now, and its working really great!
The one thing I'd kinda LIKE to change, but I'm not going to sweat it... is the new HTC app I installed uses WMP for the music app on the 5th HTC Tab. I kinda liked that the Touch Cruise ROM version used it's own media player, but that's a minor issue I'm happy to live without.
Add cities
If you want to add cites to the weather app keep in mind that the htc home plug in that is shipped with the phone goes to a site that HTC has set up to get the weather. It does not have every city for weather. If you read previous post here you will find a link to a new HTC Home plug in that has been modified. If you upgrade to this plug in you should then be able to change your city and then Get the weather for the city you want.
Get this file.

So finally I got it working, one question remains, is it possible to have two different locations at a time?

Unfortunately no. The app simply isn't made to show multiple cities at once. You'll just have to switch between them as you like, at least until someone makes an app like the iPhone has. Anyone know if such an app has already been written? Would be SWEET on our Touch Cruise phones.

Thank a lot.
titan weather uses accuweather (well actually it is accuweather)
the code u need to use can be acquired from www.accuweather.com webpage, but i did the job for u and its "ASI|TH|TH017|BANGKOK" (type in without quotes).
Steps.
1. tap on titan weather
2. tap on menu and select options /setup and then tap ok
3. select zip or location code and then tap ok

For anyone that has difficulties finding local code, you can read it from the url on www.accuweather.com. Just find your city and in url there will eg. http://www.accuweather.com/world-index-forecast.asp?partner=accuweather&locCode=EUR|CS|YI003|NOVI SAD
You can find more information on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3304751#post3304751 in the first post. You shuld only
use this url and add your city name to end of it: hadle.accu-weather.com/widget/hadle/city-find.asp?location=

Verizon Users: Weather Tab

Are any of you able to get the weather tab to use GPS to show the weather in your location? By that I mean where ever you are on the highway or whatever city you're visiting... Or is this a windows 6.5 or upgraded TF3D option?
been wondering the same thing, and not that i know of.
apparently it works great on the Elite Rom whenever they can get HSPL out.
you guessed right, 6.5 supported with manila. Not on the 6.1 version.
that sucks a fat one!!!
Oops, didn't see the part about the GPS at first. I use windows live search for that but it would be nice if the main weather icon did it.
"do some searching there is a weather editor app that allows you to modify the list of choices and you can add anything that accuweather reports on.
here is the cab but you need to find the instructions. I don't remember what they where. you have to find a file remove the read only, copy it to a new directory make the change and then copy it back or something similar."

Tutotrial: How to add Category Folder Quick Links to your Home Tab.

I have been wanting to add folders for some time to my quicklinks. I researched and researched.
I came across this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=576232
However it only dealt with a few categories.
So I have created new .lnk files and asscociated them with .png folder icons and created the necessary registry files.
This will work if you have 9, 12 or 16 Quick Links. For 20 Quick Links I think it will still work but you have to assign the Quick Links yourself.
Just unzip the attached file, read the read me and copy the Programs Folder to your phone and inport the enclosed registry entry too. Reset.
great idea! i wondered why 20 quicklinks are enough for all people here. i just have installed a few apps and games and my quicklink bar is full!
are you going to make the quicklinks for the 20 icon bar?
Great work, thanks.

If 25 links is enough for you? See this thread, from the same guy who created the 20 links on Home tab.
thanks, i've already seen the 25 link thread! i think it will be more flexible with folder links to group games etc. but maybe i'm going to use both tweaks:
normal links for most important apps and folder links for games, system information and so on...

Bit of a noob question but why can't you just create links to the default folders and then run these. I tried this but it always says fails to open "games application".

Just to add to my last, I have an HD with 2.5.1922011 Nrgz ROM but can't seem to import the registry settings. Have used TRE and it states that registry import was successful but to no avail. I have tried hand modifying the entries but still not working. Am I missing something???
Not working
Changed the registry to my portuguese ROM and nothing!
Maybe this only works on WWE roms because of the registry names. If importing the registry does not work for you, try just adding the folders manually to your quick links in the normal way you would add apps. just look fit the folder.link file in the list. let me know.

This is exactly what happens to me and my ROM is WWE. I can link the folder but it will not open. Tried manually editing the registry but without success. another approach
Hi!
I had the very same problem.
The recommendations given here, I use too, but I remembered a small program usually used for maintaining a directory organisation with PortableApps on the PC. It just uses its own name (like 'games.exe') extracts the '.exe' out of it and opens the reaining 'games' as a directory. I found this was a brute, but very useful solution to the problem. So finally I did that app for mobile devices on my own. It is written in C#. Prerequisites are compact framework 3.5.
In my opinion its only drawback is, that it uses the file-explorer as a platform to view the directory. I would like the HTC view with icons more, but I don't know, how to call the required code to do so.
Personally I have installed 4 instances of the program (240kb) on the storage-card and created the links to them in the startmenu-folder. This works fine with directlinks.
Note: Only subfolders in /windows/startmenu/programs are opened! For other needs the source code is easily changeable.
Here comes a short description:
----------------------------------------------------------------
Prerequisites: Microsoft Compact Framework 3.5.
Install and usage description:
MobDir.Cab installs the file MobDir.exe into your 'prorams' directory.
Since MobDir reads in its very own name to function, it is of utmost importance to RENAME MobDir.exe to a directory name, that fits for your environment!
MobDir starts a File-Explorer directly in a directory that resides in your /windows/start menu/programs
directory.
e.g.: There is a dir called 'games' in your 'programs' directory of 'start menu', that contains all the links to your games on the device. Rename MobDir.Exe accordingly into 'games.exe'. If the program is already installed in your 'start menu/programs' directory, there is not much more to do for you. Simply select games.exe in your directlinks. There you have a directory-icon labeled 'games' then which, when clicked, opens the file-explorer in your games directory. If games.exe resides on your starage card, you have to create a games.lnk into the 'start menu/programs' directory first.
Of course, if you have more subdirectories in your 'start menu/programs' folder, which is most likely the case ('apps', 'tools' for instance), just copy the file MobDir.Exe under these names to your device. In this example as apps.exe and tools.exe. The rest is the same as written beforehand.
Sounds more complicated as it is, just try it, it's simple.
Note: The way it works can be followed by watching the source code. It first reads in its own filename (e.g.: 'games.exe'). Then it extracts the '.exe' out of the name (leaving a 'games'). Right after it looks for your current localized '/windows/start menu/programs/' path and adds the string to it, which we extracted beforehand. So we have a path 'windows/start menu/programs/games'. Finally the file-explorer is called with that path as a parameter.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Here is the source-code:
Code:
using System;
namespace MobDir
{
static class Program
{
[MTAThread]
static void Main()
{
string cFileNameSelf="Use this Base-Code as a sample. Written in '2010 bei D.Bos";
try
{
//read out own filename and strip out ".EXE"
cFileNameSelf = AppDomain.CurrentDomain.FriendlyName.ToUpper().Replace(".EXE", "");
//start File-Explorer, given the path to /windows/startmenu/programs/ + <NameSelf>
System.Diagnostics.Process p = System.Diagnostics.Process.Start("fexplore.exe", ReadSpecialFolder("Programs") + "\\" + cFileNameSelf + "\\");
p.WaitForExit();
}
catch (System.Exception e)
{
System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show("Problem with <" + cFileNameSelf + ">!\n" + e.Message);
}
}
public static string ReadSpecialFolder(string cVarName)
{
return Environment.GetFolderPath((Environment.SpecialFolder)Enum.Parse(typeof(Environment.SpecialFolder), cVarName, true));
}
}
}
-----------------------------------------------------------
And finally: The file MobDir.Cab is attached to this posting.
Hopefully you can make some use of it.

games into games folder

hi there i've installed some games onto my HD2 (uno, FM, tonyhawks) and want to locate them in the games folder not in the main windows area. can anyone help me do this?
open file explorer. browse to windows/startmenu/programs.....look for ur games shortcuts......cut..... nd paste in windows/startmenu/programs/games. done
You're not done at all.
OK, it will move the shortcut to the correct folder, but the icon won't follow. It's defined in the registry ([HKLM\Security\Shell\Startinfo\Start] then the folder name, then the shortcut name, string value "Icon").
People making CABs should be a bit less lousy and direct shortcuts to the correct folder, same for the acompanying icon.
Actually, some people put icon definitions into several registry keys, so they will "follow" the shortcut if you move it. It's actually a satisfying alternative, if you consider it gives the user the ability to put the shortcut wherever he wants (including copying it to several locations) without losing the icon.
But yes, having shortcuts piling up into the Start Menu's first level, or even worse, placing them into dummy folders with a fixed name (sometimes in a foreign language), is pig work, and I saw even worse (yes, it's possible !) : shortcuts landing to a foreign language "Programs" or even "Start menu" folder, so actually not even displaying in the Start Menu !
When you create (or modify) a CAB file, you should heavily use aliases in order to let Windows Mobile translate them to the actual names during installation.
For instance, if you wanted to direct a shortcut to the "Games" folder, whatever its actual name in your own language is, you should NOT put it into "\Windows\StartMenu\Programs\Games" (neither into "%StartMenu_Programs%\Games", though it's still better like that), but you should actually use "%StartMenu_Programs_Games%", which will put the shortcut in the exact correct location.
You can do the same for the program's location itself. For instance, %ProgramFiles_Games% will direct it to the correct folder, according to your system's language, and will even do so, either you choose to install it on the internal memory, or on the SD card.
You can use these aliases inside registry values, too.
Unfortunately, this process may sometimes do it "too much".
It's the case on cooked ROMs, where the author may retain WWE names for some folders and translate others, sometimes using his own syntax. Since the CAB will always translate using the official way, it may still land in an incorrect location...
The ony way to be sure you'll obtain the wanted result, anyway, is to get some CAB editor program and peek inside before copying them to the pocket PC and installing them... And maybe, fix them before using them.
It will be handy each time you'll need to reinstal it, so don't mind inspecting and fixing the CABs you find : it's always better than crashing your system because something wrong or inadequate to your setup was put inside.
One classic case is TouchFlo / Sense tabs, for instance.
Unfortunately, they're all defined inside a unique XML Manila file, so you actually can't just ADD a tab : in fact, this notion does not even exist ; all you can do is overwrite your whole tabs list with another complete one, and pray that you'll end up with the same list, plus the new one... Would you bet your life on that ? I won't.
In real life, you really can NEVER trust a CAB intended to add a tab to your existing setup, as the author most probably don't have the same tabs as you have. In the best case, you'll just loose some tabs (they'll just disappear, even in the tabs list from the settings, and you won't get them back) : the programs and files are still there, but their definition file will have been replaced by the new one. And in the worst case, it will add a definition for a tab whose programs and files are not previously installed on your phone - and you'll crash it once and for all.
That's the reason why now, I never give a tab CAB containing any tabs definitions. I only provide all but the tabs list, and provide separate CABs for all the possible tabs combinations - and you have to choose and use the good one. Or use Maltwater's SenseUtil program to setup your tabs. The good news is my method will setup all the tabs in perfect order as soon as you've soft resetted the device, since my CABs contain the XML file, plus all the registry keys, plus it resets ManiFull.xml.
So, people, whatever I said about good CABs putting the shortcuts where they should... OK, you may be lucky... But the right behaviour should always be to look inside CABs before trying them. You can trust me !
i'm new coming nice to know all

It's been a while since I had the need to move icons, so there may be newer versions of this program, but the JWMDIconChanger will move the icons for you.
