1 GHz Qualcomm CPU in future handsets & coming Nokia N810-killer? - General Topics

I'm not really into writing hardware news (I don't have the time for something that other tech writers / bloggers also elaborate on - instead, I prefer spending my time on tutorials, software reviews, Bibles and unique, genuine hacks instead), but the latest hardware news (reported on by Geek.com) is indeed pretty interesting and certainly shows there will be some REALLY exciting Windows Mobile devices in the (unfortunately, not very near: late 2008 / early 2009) future. Let me cite Geek.com:
First look at Qualcomm’s new Fairbanks and Anchorage mobile platforms
The other model, the more exciting one for most people, is the “Anchorage”. This is based on Qualcomm’s Snapdragon platform so it will use a 1.0GHz processor (said to operate at 1/2 watt peak) along with WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, cellular, and a lot more good stuff. The unofficial word is that Snapdragon will offer close to the best power/performance ratio of anything on the market. The Anchorage device will be aimed more at productivity and the test model I saw had a QWERTY keyboard. The form factor of this model was a lot like the Nokia N810, but the actual design will be whatever OEMs want. So far we know that Samsung and HTC are on board, but there are a few others that are not official yet.

Anchorage
Anchorage and iPhone
The Anchorage was running Windows Mobile 5.0, which was only used for display purposes as any OS, even a full OS, can be run on the 1.0GHz processor. It also has the camera with video recording, GPS, and live TV playback capability. Because it has a cellular signal it will be prime competition for a device like the HTC Advantage, though it will also compete against products like the Nokia N810 and Sony mylo 2.
Everything is still in its early stages and things will change a lot once the OEMs get their hands on them and start to customize. This may mean lost/added functionality as well as many different form factors and large swings in the price. All we do know is that we should start to see the devices released by the end of 2008, possible early 2009.

Which are all the Phones with - 1 GHz Qualcomm CPU ?
& which is Best of them all ?

The Acer F1 and Toshiba TG01 both boast Snapdragon processors. Many MIDs/Netbooks/Smartbooks whatever you want to call them also have it. I estimate that by next year it will be common for many devices to use it. It is revolutionary IMO

Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 will have Snapdragon & WM6.5!

XDA Dev, what do you think of this phone?

It is time for a new phone and I am thinking of getting the ASUS P526 over a HTC touch Cruise.

200Mhz TI OMAP 850 <- This bugs me... This alone is enough to not buy this phone... But then again, maybe ASUS have a better HW implementation - thus making the phone take more advantage of the CPU... MAYBE
64MB RAM.......after having gotten used to 128MB I couldn´t imagine going back...
sorry to add more negatives but there is no WIFI nor 3G. So all your internet browsing is done via GPRS and EDGE! (and activesync when at your pc.) If your after a handset of this design, BUT are after everything look out for the iPaq 610c/614c. It keeps getting delayed but features, 520mhz cpu, 3G and HSDPA, 3mp camera, wifi, bluetooth, gps, keypad, 240x320 touchscreen and more. This ASUS handset is a very very basic handset for what it is. But it does lack a few, make me wanna buy it features! But also if this handset does everything you need, I can't see you going wrong with Win Mo 6, there are just going to those few extra handy features its worth having (like wifi, 3g ect ect).
Anyway thats my opinion. Hope it helps.
I was given a loan of the TC to review and I have recently brought the P526.
In my opinion the P526 is OK, and thats about it.
Compared with the TC:
the GPS works very well, running Tomtom, but an hour will do the battery, car charger a must but it comes with one and a spare battery, so you have to think that is was going to be poor. The TC was no better or worse with Sat nav, both as functional as each other.
The P526 is far lighter and smaller much more pocket friendly. The reason I brought the P526 is that i do miss a keypad and I got fed up waiting for the Ipaq 614c or the Asus P750.
The screen on the TC is obviously better, ie. bigger. The processor on the TC is FAR superior, the P526 does lag quite a lot, but with the new ROM fix 6.1 is it greatly improved, I did have an Orbit/athemis for 15 months and I like the P526 as much.
Given the choice, its weighing up, do you need Wifi, 3g etc? I personally don't, I want a keypad. I am going to be reviewing the Ipaq when it comes out, already I am wondering if it is going to be too big, but I will probably buy it for the processor and the keypad, if everything else appears OK. That is if it ever gets the delays sorted out!
Hope it helps....

HTC "Dream" phone = Google Android?

Seen this article when I fired up Yahoo Go! today on my 8525
http://news.yahoo.com/s/infoworld/20080320/tc_infoworld/96138_1
"San Francisco - The mobile phone High Tech Computer (HTC) has been developing to run on the Android software from Google will be called "Dream," have a large touchscreen and full QWERTY keypad, a person close to the situation said Thursday.
HTC may become the first handset maker in the world to put out a mobile phone developed around Android , but it faces stiff competition from Samsung, a separate source said. Samsung has stepped up its effort to put out a Google phone, the person said.
HTC's Google handset is just over 5-inches long and 3-inches wide, with a keypad underneath the screen that either slides out or swivels out. The aim of the keypad is for easy e-mail, note-taking, and writing Web addresses. Internet navigational controls are situated below the screen on the handset.
The handset will likely hit the market near the end of this year, the person said.
The company officially remained mum on the handset. "We cannot comment on this product," said Maggie Cheng, an HTC representative.
Last November, HTC became the first company to admit to developing a mobile phone based on Android , although Samsung, Motorola, and other handset developers are part of the group dedicated to furthering the software, the Open Handset Alliance .
Android, an open source software platform that includes an OS, is designed to take advantage of Internet services for mobility. The software could become a potent new rival to Windows Mobile and other handset operating systems . At the launch ceremony, Google announced that over 30 companies had joined the Open Handset Alliance."

the android has street view...wow...it looks crazy good.
mmmhh!!
...Let's see!!
very cool info & looks of the "dream"...hope it comes true soon!
it will be interesting to see if Quake really does run smoothly @ 30fps on a 300+ mhz processor too....
tell me it will be gsm only and i'm going to beat some htc heads in.
omg .... appears to be a real dream come true ...
I think that won't be the final look...
... starting from that Windows key clearly visible on the keyboard!
looks the dogs bollericks doesn't it. I'm glad the Google initiative managed to persuade HTC to switch to their platform It'll be interesting how this effects the HTC/Microsoft relationship which has always been a bit bumchum for my liking.
more android vids here.
Looking at this: http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=790
It seems to be WM and not Android
is this OS specific to the device or are you going to be able to hack existing ppc's to install it as an alternative to wm?

If I were a betting man I would say device specific even with "Android" aka Linux, I think, you would need device specific drivers. If your device uses the same components then you may be able to.

I'm developing on android, and what is shown in the video is definitly android. i dont know if the "dream" phone is shipped with android but htc is working on an android device. and btw: android really kicks ass! not just for developers but for endusers too.
I don't think the "Dream" phone which is what that article is about will have android.
After playing around with the Android SDK, I have to say I can't wait for a device, and to see what everyone has programmed!
would be very cool if community would develop this around existing devices... wm is so inefficient I'm excited to see a viable alternative but would be unfortunate if it only works on new devices...

What exactly does "bumchum" mean?
I want to see a phone with mostly screen area (Like iPhone), and a slide out keyboard that tilts (like the Tilt). From the looks of the Android demos, it looks like most everything will be done with touch inputs on the screen. However there will be folks (like me) that want a good QWERTY keyboard for SMS, and to be able to prop it up on a table in tilt mode for hands-free video calling.
I used the dream... only for a a minute or so. I work for one of the companies make a part for the phone.
Sorry for the quality, all I had was my PDA on hand to get the pic and upcoming vid.
If you want to know anything, please let me know and I might be able to help.
OK! sorry for another post but the vid finally came through. Get VLC or quicktime to play it. I am new on this posting vids so for now please dont hate me for the rapidshare.
not too good, but its a vid. sorry for the format... blackjack 2 records that way.

In conclusion, The Htc touch pro 3 (aka) Htc 7 Pro, which suppose to be more of a business phone, should have a frontward facing camera, at least a micro sd memory card reader for those of us who already have a 16gig micro sd memory card, at least a 4.0 inch screen, and run on the 4G network. I will not mention that the Bluetooth and USB use old technology on the Htc 7 Pro when the new Bluetooth and USB upgraded technology is available. Asking for mobile hotspot and a 1.5 dual core processor would be asking for too much. Most importantly Htc, how does the Htc 7 Pro compare to the Samsung Epic 4G besides the OS?! For those who would like to see the specs of the Samsung Epic 4G with Sprint, go to the Sprint website or Google it.
Notice the full five-row keyboard and big 4-inch screen with a frontward facing camera for video conference. Most importantly check out the specs! So what is the difference between the Htc touch Pro 2 and Htc 7 Pro, and how does it compare to the Samsung Epic 4G?!
That's the way I think HTC should use it, not for WP7. Sorry for offtopic.

I think that would be more akin to the successor of the HTC Shift than the HTC Touch Pro 2.

Xperia Ion Vs. HTC One XL

The previous thread was closed with the similar topic, but nothing was really said on which one member would choose. So I bring you the poll... I just found out about the Xperia Ion and everything about it is screaming at me to get it, but I don't know when it's going to come out. So which one would you choose, if you had the choice? Let the debate begin!

Xperia build quality for me is ok. But i hated the rest.
I can't accept it even it gives the android expirience.
In that case i chose the XL for sure even with small battery and no sd slot.

Both are good competitors. But in my opinion Ion is better.

... No they don't.
My choice would be Sony Ion...I think it looks better...so...get it
I'm desperately hoping that the Ion is released by my upgrade date (June 6th). I have a feeling that Sony decided not to launch the Ion with Android 2.3.7, thus the delay. Why release a phone with one operating system with an upgrade available a month later when you could delay launch for a month and release it with the current OS version? The major complaint about this phone when it was first announced was that it would be launched with GB. I'm hoping Sony saw the light at the end of the tunnel.

You pre-ordered? You bastard. I have to wait til AT&T rolls it out so I can use my upgrade. I just hope it's not the same price as the Galaxy Note.

Le 1s outshines iPhone SE

Apple announced the iPhone SE and the web is going wild about it! The Verge says "The new iPhone SE finally makes a small phone feel powerful", TechRadar says that its "Small but mighty!" and The Telegraph calls it "Apple's secret weapon". Lots of superlatives are being thrown around, as is always the case with Apple products.
So, in the midst of Apple's reality distortion field, I decided to compare it to my Le 1s - that I've been using for more than a month now. The results, at least for me, are very conclusive.

Let's start with the OS. Android and iOS are now at-par on features, freely taking inspiration from each other and the perennial also-ran Windows Phone. However, if you've been using an Android phone, the move to iOS is jarring regardless of preparation. Trust me, having moved from a OnePlus 2 to an iPhone 6S, I know this better than most. If you're an iPhone user already, there is no discussion required. If you're an Android user, then I'd say "Don't even consider an iPhone!"
Moving on to design and build, the new iPhone is, in line with Apple's policy "thinner, smaller and lighter" than the Le 1s. However, the Le 1s has an astounding screen-to-body ratio of 75% that enables single-handed use and the phone doesn't feel too big. After all, within reason, bigger is always better! Both phones offer amazing build quality at their respective price points, so that's not really much of a contest.
On display, if you like smaller screens, the iPhone SE will appeal to you. But for someone who has used a 4+ inch screen device earlier, going back to a smaller display doesn't really work. In this respect, the Le 1s scores with its big but not too big display, and its helped by minimal bezels. Resolution-wise, its a no contest with the Full HD In-Cell display on the Le 1s ruling the roost with its fantastic color reproduction, great viewing angles and almost-zero bezels.
On connectivity, both the Le 1s and the iPhone SE are at par with each other on Wi-Fi and Network compatibilities, but the Le 1s scores with its dual-SIM capability.
When it comes to performance, I believe that specs are just one part of the game. Real-world performance is key. And in this area, despite having lesser amount of RAM than the Le 1s, the iPhone SE performs equally well due to better memory management in iOS versus Android. Its a straight tie!
Camera is another key feature where specs are just one part of the game with actual photo clarity being the key identifier. The iPhone SE uses the much-lauded camera module from the iPhone 6S, so its a given that photos will come out well. The Le 1s on the other hand had a few initial hiccups with photo clarity but they've since been resolved by OTA updates, so overall - its a good camera experience on both smartphones. The Le 1s scores in lowlight clarity and front-camera! Apple, for reasons that defy logic, went with a 1.2MP sensor on the front-camera. Now megapixels might not be everything, but with a 5MP sensor, the Le 1s handily beats the iPhone SE on selfies. Another reason is the smaller aperture size on Le 1s cameras – both front and rear (f2.0) compared to the iPhone SE which has f2.4 on the front camera and f2.2 on the rear camera – in photography parlance, smaller is referred to as “wider”. A wider aperture lets in more light which gives better photos in low-light and indoor situations, and gives you that beautiful blurred “out of focus” effect on wide shots.
With respect to sensors, the Le 1s has an infrared sensor to control home appliances that the iPhone doesn't. Everything else on this front is a tie.
Finally, the "essential spec" in today's world, battery! The Le 1s has almost double the battery capacity of the iPhone SE, with fast-charge built-in! While iOS has better power management than Android, the huge difference in capacity should result in longer standby times with the Le 1s!
Regardless of all technical specifications and performance comparisons, there will still be people convinced that an Apple product is the next best thing since sliced bread! So, to those people, here is a final nail in the coffin. Both the Le 1s and iPhone SE are good phones that do almost everything you can expect them to. Most importantly for a budget-conscious Indian, the Le 1s costs INR 10,999 while the iPhone SE starts at a whopping INR 39,000! That’s three times more expensive than the Le 1s!!! Case closed.
