I've installed the HTC ROM and the hardware keyboard fix and all is well, but I'm not fond of the keyboard layout. I've searched through the messages here but all I found were a few queries on how to switch that were never answered. Is there a way to change the on-screen keyboard back to the 40 character layout that comes on the Tilt and older Windows Mobile devices after flashing the HTC ROM?

There have been lots of posts by people looking to properly disable XT9 that is integrated in the HTC soft keypad and keyboard to make the "regular" word completion work when using the hardware keyboard.
For quick SMS messages, I still prefer a phonepad with XT9. I like the large layout of the HTC keypad, but XT9 drives me nuts. After trying about every SIP I could find, I think the smootest for T9 phonepad input is the HTC Phone Pad (also called Intellipad) that apparently used to be included on HTC roms. It's quick and T9 only rears its face when you're using it.
There are a number of skins out there for it, including a touch-style one that looks close to the new HTC Keypad (sorry for not looking up the creator) but the 0-9 keys are always smaller (due to the extra keys on the sides I guess).
I think it would be great if someone with some knowledge of creating SIPs and skinning them could create a new skin for this Phone Pad that is laid out just like the new HTC Keypad. I imagine this would take a little more modification than just a new skin due to the size of the buttons and the layout. For example, I don't see the need for the arrow buttons on the corners of the Phone Pad, but you can't scroll through the word suggestions with the hardware "D-pad" 'as is'.
I wish I could get this started myself, but unfortunately I have no knowledge of how to make/edit a SIP. I know there's plenty of people out there that can however, so hopefully someone might be interested in making a more usable version of the new HTC Keypad and interested in taking this on.
One thing I've noticed with all the great cooked ROMs is that the stock screen keyboard is not nearly as good (at least to me) as the screen keyboard found on the stock ATT ROM. Is there a cab file where I can install that particular screen keyboard?
NOTE: I'm not referring to the physical keyboard fix for mapping.
Thanks!
most cookers don't disable the stock onscreen keyboard. When keyboard shows up, should be able to click on the little arrow next to the keyboard and select the OEM original stock keyboard. Some of the keyboards are skinned to different colors, then you might want to ask the cooker in their appropriate thread how to get back the keyboard.
I'm not sure if I answered your question because I'm a bit confused...the stock ATT rom screen keyboard is the same as the TYTNII screen keyboard.
please somebody answer my question.
basically, tilt2 is same as touch pro2, except the keyboard layouts, right? however, the layouts are all different by carriers, right?
i am using tilt2 with at&t' stock rom. i love to flash my phone with one of the newer fancy roms. after flashing, what will happen to the keyboard layout. i mean the sliding keyboard.
please.....
Hi,
I'm about to order an Xperia X10, but i really hate using software keyboards (QWERTY).
Is there any way i can install/replace the QWERTY keyboard with a T9-keypad type input method like the one on my HTC Touch HD?
cheers in advance
Better Keyboard has a compact qwerty, and i`m pretty sure a T9 style as well. You might want to check out the leaked WVGA HTC_IME, it is considered by many to be the best soft keyboard available on android.
i found the HTC IME, it looks great. I havent recieved my phone yet, i'm wondering if its as easy to replace the IME on android as it is on Windows Mobile. I.E. will it feel hacked on or "native"? thanks
Changing input methods is supported natively.
guys i have a touch diamond 2, which doesn't have a physical keyboard and 6.5 windows mobile running on it. htc removed the default MS keyboard altogether from this rom and now i don't have special keys like tab (i like programming in python, and tab is very necessary for that language), ctrl (for multiple file selection) and alt.
i've searched google and came up with nothing. i really like the htc onscreen keyboard but what do i do when i need special keys?
