Universal and 8GB SDHC? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

Hi all, I just want confirmation that the universal using Beasty & Laurentius 2.08.01 ROM can handle 4GB and 8GB SDHC cards before I go ahead and buy one. I am currently using a 2GB SD card with no problems but obviously would like to have bigger SD(HC in this case), card available.
Thanks and hopefully you guys can let me know.

Works perfect

Internal Read/Write speed is good.
But USB hdd mode terrible slow ( with SDHC cards )
I guess this come from USB 1.1 transfer capacity and speed limitations. ( I've forgot about Read/write buffers, Changing buffer may give damage the device Beasty or Laurentius has said that in a thread. )
Actually USB 1.1 has 42 mbps transfer rate ( SDHC Class 12 cards have 12~48 mbps ) but not in sale at this moment. Currently class 6 in shops ( 6 ~ 24 mbps )
I'm currently using SDHC cards and there is no problem.
Except : Device get small freezings while watching High resolution and high bitrate encoded videos ( 640*480 etc.. )
At the end.
Big storage good for more multimedia.
Note:I've not tried B & L 's latest rom yet . but I Think SDHC driver is same and come from one of Guru of Rom Masters mamaich and I always believe his works.Hopefully it's works for you too..

Thanks for info.
Hi there, thanks a lot for the info, I use my Universal primarily for GPS (I have both TOMTOM and iGo installed) so I just want to be able to put more maps without having to erase any of them when I go back to america. Thanks again for the info, I will be looking into buying an 8GB SDHC card now.

I'm glad to hear that your SDHC card is working well. What rom version are you running and have you done any tweaks to your device? Also, do you use the Windows Media Player on your Trinity? I'm just trying to track down where the problems could come from. Thanks.
I bought a 4Gb mini SD from mobymemory. It came with a nice little adaptor/keyring too.
Unfortunately it kept corrupting data from day 1. Files and folders being deleted, then named with strange characters.
To give mobymemory credit they got me an RMA very quickly and refunded me within a week.
In the end I went for a 1Gb card from Crucial (as was in a desperate rush). £10 with special next day delivery. Wanted 2Gb but they weren't in stock that day.
MobyMemory's 4GB miniSD is working fine with mUn's latest WM6 ROM(2.0.0.SE), filled it up with music and no problem so far(some user reported that MM's 4gb card worked nice until it was filled with more that 2GB of data, so, I decided to test that with mUn's ROM).
With a previous WM5 & LVSW WM6 rom(2.0.0.3) I had a few issues, a couple of 100% percent data loss events lol, it hapened whenever I stressed the card, i.e. listening to music while playing a game installed on the card, power off the device while still playing the game( or auto power off if the music was paused ) and powering the device on again.
My MiniSD 4GB memory card worked fine for only one month! After that My trinity stacked and had to to soft reset wich time I pushed the start menu, all this with the old ROM without GPS.
I've inserted in a card reader, and copied everything to a folder in the host pc, formated the 4gb card copied again everything to the card, udated the ROM and is workig very fine so far, until when????
Kingston doesn't work - SPV does not see it at all.

Defragmenting Memory Cards is completely useless There is no Harddisk Head running around on your SD Card, so defragmenting is useless. And: SD Cards only have a limited count of read/write cycles which will be reduced by defragmenting them.

does (sd-card) speed really matter ? ....

hi all
i'm using pdas for many years now, and always bought high quality over low price. same with sd-cards. if i can get a class6 device for a few euros more i would prefer that. but to come to the question: does it really matter? is a faster card really worth it? is class2 fast enough (regarding the internal sd-card interface of the pda?). i never really saw a big difference in every day use between fast and slow cards. and tools like pocket mechanic NEVER showed speeds close to the theoretical maximum of the card.
so what do you think ...
regards ize|man
Hi
Fast cards worth the money but they must be stable too....
Bye
Jorge
The trick is getting a card that works and is stable in your pda, AND able to read & quickly transfer data with your PC/card reader (need this for transfering movies/mp3s etc). In my opinion the speed is more benificial on the PC side.
my personal experience with sandisk ultra II is that it worked for 2 weeks then got currupted. so i swapped it for sandisk standard & that was 6 months ago, no probs since!
High speed SD card
Sorry for late answer, this is my first post in this forum.
If I can help....
I use everyday Tomtom 6 GPS and I was not very happy of the speed it was working. I tried a 2 Gb high speed (70x) and installed Tomtom in it. What a difference ! The soft was fast and I thought the all PDA too !
Might Helpful for you...
Need to match PDA and memory card ...
I had an issue with any media player misbehaving, and try as I may could not get any music to play without skipping.
Finally I tracked it down to slow memory, namely of the Kingston variety. Having changed the Kingston mini4GB class 4 memory to Sandisk micro8GB class 4 memory all my media player problems seems to have gone away.
I was on the brink of flashing to a WM lite version under mis-belief that it would help. Also I thought of doing some extensive regedits to increase the memory access priority to the card etc. but it seems a more simple solution was at hand.
Match the memory card to the PDA

actually, the same for me - i also have the 8 Gb microsdhc class 4 and it works like a charm - much better than previous "fast" minisd from mobymemory.
Still, i am never able to use them correctly under my PC - despite the fact i use a SDHC compliant USB adapter...
Definitely worth the money. I used to use a regular 2G miniSD, lately I replaced it with a Nokia 8G micro SDHC class6 (with mini adapter). Much faster and more stable.

Micro SD Problem VOX/S710

i've recently got my hands on a VOX/s710 phone
my last phone before this used micro SD cards, it was a nokia
when i try to put my nokia micro SD into my VOX, it doesnt recognize, but, as soon as i put it on a nokia, other phones like a palm, etc, it recognizes
is there a problem between nokia branded micro SD cards with HTC?
i tried another brand of micro SD and it worked perfectly
any ideas?
cheers
Initially I tried a NOKIA micro SD card with my Vox and it worked fine.
hum, tks for the reply
so no clues at what the problem might be?
guess if i dont resolve this, ill have to buy another micro SD card
May be, you give a try by formatting the card using a card reader from a Windows PC. That might help.
Yes, make a backup and format to FAT32 (also useful if you want to flash from sd card)! Then put your files back on the card and try again!
thanks for the tips
fortunately, i dont have any indispensable information on the microSD card, i didnt use it a lot, since it was a 1G card, and i had a 2G on my older nokia.
i'm going to try and format it and then post the result hopefully it will work
but since i dont have a memory card reader right now, im gonna try and put it on my old nokia, connect it to the pc and try to format it from there, or format it from inside the nokia phone.
ill figure out something
thanks again for the tips
cheers

tks for the tip tryed it right now, and now its working fine
many thanks both of you for the help!

I dont know exactly how to do it search the forum, but i know that there is a thread that says that partion 4gb (using WM5torage that thread tells how to) and then you can use it.
the vox supports SDHC microSD up to 8Gb, found this in www.pocketpc.ch (will post the link l8 when back on my pc).
i'm using a sandisk SDHC 4Gb fat32 formatted, works perfect! i will buy a 8Gb soon and post the results here .

remembered to post this note, after fomarting the sd card, it worked well
just another question though, you guys are talking about 4 and 8 gigs sd cards
doesnt having a much bigger sd card slow down the phone? i've heard of such rumours but never got the chance to tested myself, and since i'm willing to make a sd upgrade i would like to know if its better to stick with a 1 gig or 2 gigs sd card, or i can go ahead and get a 4 or 8 gigs?

i never tried with a 1 or 2Gb card, so there i cannot say. but on the otherhand i did not remark an diffrence of speed with the 4 or 8Gb card, they're just as fast as usual (in cellular device or in pc with cardreader). the only thing i can say, is that cards from cheap(er) brands are always slower than cards from quality brands (such as sandisk, as example). and also SDHC cards should always be faster than 1 or 2Gb cards, because they have a newer controllers (not 100% sure about this point, i think i might have read that in c't).
i hope i could help a little bit...
Dang, 8GB cards work without driver patching? That is champion. I'll be ordering myself one soon.
Yep, can confirm 8gb card works fine, have had one in mine for some months now...
Now what about 16gb? was that article written before 16's were available even the sandisk site seems to be out of date saying nokias that are supposed to support 16's only support 8?
anyone actually confirmed 16's don't work?

at work, some weeks ago, i discussed this with a dev. and he meant that from the hardware side it should be no problem, but maybe the driver needs to be updated. i'm not sure, but as i know the driver adds support for sdhc, no matter of the size of the card. he's not a sys dev, he does apps and branding, i'm only test-ex and advanved user, so correct me if i'm wrong (i'm still learning ).
edit: found following on http://www.wisegeek.com/what-are-sdhc-cards.htm
The new 2.00 specification should last a bit longer, as it allows SDHC cards to reach a maximum capacity of 32GB.
Click to collapse
so i think, if the device supports that specification (and the vox does), it should support cards up to 32Gb.
and again some info about speed:
The SDHC specification 2.00 calls for cards to be classified according to the minimal sustained DTS as follows:
Class 2: minimum sustained DTS of 2MB/sec
Class 4: minimum sustained DTS of 4MB/sec
Class 6: minimum sustained DTS of 6MB/sec
SDHC cards are classified to guarantee a specific sustained DTS. This potentially saves consumers money, as flash cards are priced not only according to capacity, but also to speed. For example, if a product's maximum DTS is 2MB/sec, dishing out extra cash for Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards would be a waste of money. Conversely, devices that can utilize the 4MB/sec or 6MB/sec DTR (i guess the author meant DTS, kel187) will perform significantly better with Class 4 or Class 6 SDHC cards, respectively.

my 4Gb card is Class 2 and my 8Gb is Class 4. i did not recognized any diffrences in speed advantages, neither on the mobile nor on the pc. so the vox and my cardreader must be class 2 devices, what a pitty ^^

The card could be read INSIDE of my Raphael but not on my PC with different card readers. This would be a minor problem but my Raphael also destroyed randomly files on the card too.
I thought the Micro SDHC Card was defective and send it back.
Now I own a Sandisk 16GB Card and it got also courrupted in like 2 days of use.
Some file from my *Notes* was thrashed and other files followed.
Raphael will try to open the file and then stay busy. After like 20 seconds a message containing "There is not enough memory " pop up... (150MB free ram should be enough to open a 2 kb Notes-file )
Wierd thing -> My *old* Sandisk 6 GB MicroSDHC Card I own for more than half a year now works flawlessly... (Till yet )
Someone here got the same experiences ?
Someone got some advice for me ?
I read something about updated SD sdrivers from member Tucan which he cooked into a german stock rom. Are they any good for me ?
Is there a Rom which should solve my problems ?
Help will be really appreciated !!
im sorry but the new memory you have must be fake, that explains why it works with your old mem, and why after sending it back, the same place sent you another fake.
Oh lord here we go, I just ordered my 8gb MicroSDHC card from newegg since the Fuze will be out soon I hope this isn't a common problem.
I corrupted my 8GB once, but by my own fault. I was in the middle of a transfer and was connected as a hard drive, not through activesync, and hit the power button which disconnected it from the computer. I hooked it up as a hard drive again, went into windows and reformatted the MicroSD... No issues from then on.

Anyway thanks for your replys !
Someone else has some thoughts about the problem ?
Maybe it has something to do with all the powersaving *features* beeing enabled through -Advanced Config 3.2- and -Diamond Tweak- ?
Well I'm using the same rom as you and was using an 8gb Sandisk card until I got a 16gb Sandisk card and both work flawlessly I'm afraid. I have also applied the power saving tweaks you mention with no ill effect.
using 8gb for about a month now, no problems at all.
Oh, I should mention I've heard many people talk about how there were a lot of Tilts that corrupted MicroSD cards. It was a flaw from the factory, apparently affected a number of them. I wouldn't be surprised of HTC saw some of the same issues with the Fuze, knowing all of the issues they've had already.
My 8gb card works just fine.
For reference, I'm using an A-DATA Class-6 8gb microSD purchased from NewEgg. Cheap, fast, reliable, perfect.
16gb bog standard San Disk Micro SD is working fine at the moment.
Formatted using Panasonic's SD Formatter as I corrupted it before I even put it in the Pro.
my 8GB works fine too
Maybe if everybody posts the brand name of their cards we can determine if this has something to do with the issues.
I remember with my Hermes I had to get a specific brand and produced from a certain plant to not have any issues. I still have my Kingston Micro SD from the Japan plant with no issues.
Using 8Gb and 16Gb of Sandisk with no probs on my Touch Pro.
Hi,
I may be barking up the wrong tree here but are you sure you have not enabled the Encryption setting under Settings. This will encrypt the storage card so it can only be read from the phone. Removing the card and placing in a PC or Laptop would show up as corrupted.
I selected it by mistake once and it corrupted my folder tree and showed garbage.
Not saying this is what is up but is worth looking at.
Personally I have a 16GB SanDisk card in my Touch Pro and it been OK. Been running for about 3 weeks now.
John
maybe the cardreaders from youre PC are not compatible with sdhc.

Sandisk. Always. Forever. For my memory cards at least
FYI...
I put a 16Gb Sandisk in my TP on monday (5 days ago)... not a single problem with it and no corrupted files either.
I was previously using my 4Gb Sandisk card from my old Kaiser... which also worked perfectly fine.
Had a Sandisk 8GB card in mine, no problems. Now have a 16GB Sandisk, no problems.
For me I'll buy Sandisk, and only Sandisk, for my memory cards.
I have the very chip you described in my kaiser (class 6 a-data 8gb) runs without a problem. I've never really had much problems with microsd chips but I gotta admit I got a little worries when this thread poped up not so much about the chip but the phone itself, I've never had a bad chip in my life bought about 20 or so thus far, the a-data does well in terms of speed nothing to be excisted about but for it's class and size it holds its own.

Fuze and Micro SD speed class

In searching the forums I know this has come up for other devices and am wondering about the Fuze. What Micro SD speed class can the Fuze use. Don't want to spend extra on a class 4 if it can only take advantage of the class 2 speeds.
Thanks, my Fuze gets delivered late this week, cant wait

While the fuze (and any phone really) can only take advantage of class 2 speed, your computer can use everything higher. Also, I believe when you're using the direct storage card access mode while plugged into the computer, you can take advantage of the higher speeds as well.

I just installed that tweak and, at the very least, everything seems to be able to access the storage card normally. I don't have time to try it out myself right now, but I'll see if I can slap some videos on there for testing later.
I wouldn't let thos Class numbers fool you.. I bought an early 8GB Adata Class4 card and just recently a new 8GB Class6 for a neighbor. Just out of curiosity I plugged each into a mini USB reader and ran hdtach on my PC. My old Class4 card read at 19MB/s and the newer Class6 at only 14MB/s. Explain that...
I have two 8 gb cards, one is class 4 and one is class 6. The difference when connected to a computer is around 10%, but on my Pro I didn't notice any.
However class 4 is almost 2x faster than class 2, and I believe that will have an impact on phone performance.
I could benchmark mine if someone recommends a tool.
I'm running a Sandisk 16 GB Class 2 in my AT&T Fuze, and it runs great!

Depends on the brands and models you got as to what your read speed will be, but the class rating actually has nothing to do with read speed, only write. Also, the class numbers are a guaranteed minimum write speed, so a card labeled class 2 could write faster than class 6 in theory. Here are some read-write benchmarks to show you just how they can vary:
http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,2845,2094715,00.asp
I haven't found any info on the max theoretical read/write speeds of the flash controller in the Fuze/TouchPro to know what they're supposed to be capable of.
As for the speed tweak from the Blackstone forum...I can't see any difference in playback speed using one Xvid and one Divx video in TCPMP's benchmark. Those are the only two formats I have atm, and they're both technically just MP4 video with MP3 audio.
pocket mechanics can benchmark the sd card in the pda
as benchmarking can't be don on the pc as the speeds will be way different
I think I actually have a copy of pocket mechanic. I was thinking about using SPB Benchmark, but I'll give PM a shot first.

Article on the cab file and post in the blackstone forum. This article has benchmarks in a graph showing the increase. Anyone benechmarked this tweak on a touchpro yet to see if it works like the HD does?
I have to say that I'm pretty surprised by these results. Both tests were done under identical circumstances and both probably suffer a little due to the fact that I had SOTI Pocket Controller running while I ran the tests. I used the latest version of Pocket Mechanic and an Adata class 4 8gb microsdhc. On the left is the "before."

Yes. Unfortunately, throwing all that extra data at a video processing system that was already choking to death hasn't helped video playback, which is one of the main reasons the patch was developed for the HD. I think I may try to flash the HD derived rom to my Fuze and then retest to see what happens.
If we had the right software to take advantage the hardware we could play DVD,s off this thing
I tryed a full 700meg divx dvd rip that stuttered on play a bit before the cab install, and it plays pretty decent now. It had to be the read time of the phone and not the card that was doing it. Now if coreplayer ever fixs the QVT (blue flicker) on there player it would be a neat toy to plug in with the tv out cable.
