Cooking for dummies (noobs) - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

I have taken the tile to make an illustrated cook book that should make anyone a junior cook. It is based on a modified version of Wizard rom packer kitchen by Ed Haas using the tools created by BEPE and MAIMAICH.
This document is in the form of a word doc.

Time to Cook
Very helpful...thanks

dziekuje!
Thanks for putting this together! I could have used it last night at 3am! This is great stuff for a rookie cooker (like myself).
I just used it to cook up a rom from your Version 8.1 318 WM6. Flawless!
Ian

I didn't see any tools for if someone wants to take an already cooked ROM (the nk.nbf) and then cook from that. Just a heads up you might want to add something telling everyone how to do that.

Just for the heck of it I will investigate and let you know.

Is there any possibility of putting this on the XDA FTP server or on the wiki?

Not really. I still consider myself a noob at cooking because everything I cook freezes at the first or second splash screen. I was just taking a look to see if there was anything that I was missing.

autoupdate - windows update?

57MB is the final compressed size of the OS (aka nk.nbf). As long as your Dump folder is under 80MB (81MB if you really push it), you're safe. If you don't mind some trial and error, you can just keep on adding packages until the *.nb builder gets an error.

thanks, i think it´s the htc touch stuff that needs so much space, i will try to leave autoupdate and catalog and see how much space i will get.

I am right there with you. There are some amazing roms that I just love beyond words, but would love to take out a few things like Windows Live, and instead add the few apps I consider essential...and being a pain in the @ss to the original rom developer just to cater to my needs is not what I am into.
Thanks to theloon for this tutorial...if at some point you feel bored and would care to release an updated tutorial describing how to do this using an already cooked rom that we'd like to tweak a bit...well I'd sure appreciate it.
EDIT**
Found this thread...however, if someone who knows what the hell they are talking about could create a pictured tutorial supplementing these steps, I would be so happy, I'd name a soon to be born kitten after you (and give you the cat too...hint hint...really I mean it, I got kittens for a good home)...I am still stuck on stupid when it comes to making OEM packages and stuff though.

I'm trying this Kitchen and BuildOS and CreateROM are working without any errors (or at least I have no problems starting them)
However, without making any changes to the Kitchen, the ROM already doesn't fit in the image. When I run CreateROM, i see these lines:
.....a while bunch a files pass by.......
Processing "xls2pxl.dll" as file
Processing "xmeevtsnd.dll" as module
Processing "zlib.dll" as module
Processing "zoom.bmp" as file

sorry, ive been so busy with roms recently ive neglected paid work and college work, i still ahvent slept since yesterday morning
First off having only had an XDA exec for a matter of weeks and only been playing around with creating roms for even less I have to say I am staggered by how good these kitchens are so compliments to all those who must have been involved.
The question I do have and I hope this doesn't sound too rich as a first post is why doesn't anyone seem to remove the .dsm and .rgu files as they build the roms. As far as I can see they take up a fair bit of space almost 2MB on some of the Helmi roms I've built and slow the system down by creating hundreds more files in the Windows folder to index.
Although I haven't yet got a working version of this kitchen I would have thought a CreateRom.bat of;
@echo off
copy ROM\nk.nb temp\nk.nb
cd temp
..\TOOLS\prepare_imgfs.exe nk.nb -nosplit
ECHO Next: Clean up files...
pause
del C:\DEV_UNI\Temp\dump\*.dsm
del C:\DEV_UNI\Temp\dump\*.rgu
ECHO Next: Build the rom...
pause
..\TOOLS\BuildImgfs.exe
..\TOOLS\make_imgfs.exe nk.nb -nosplit
del boot.hv
del boot.rgu
pause
would quite easily solve the problem and hopefully start a new trend for rom builders tidying up their images.
I've used the same thing on Helmi's kitchen and it seems to work well.
Don't know why my other thread is closed but here's the working kitchen.
Modified here and there by me
Took me a while to upload it.
http://rapidshare.com/files/31305034/DEV_UNI.rar.html
**** sorry, closed the wrong one, its been a long 36 hours
36 hours
Haha, you need a good sleep
Is it possible to reopen?
already done
Oops! Looks like I need to half retract my previous statement as BuildOS.exe tidies up the .rgu files whereas the CreateOS.exe that I was previously using didn't. The question still remains about the .dsm files though. Is there any reason to leave them behind?
Thanks
Goodnight.

yes, i cba to explain right now, soneone else proabbly will but yes you should allways keep them.

how to create oem pack
well i want to know if i have a .cab file or a setup file for some application( lets say spb time)... how can i create a oem pack of the name, if i want to put it in my personalised rom.... is it possible... please help

Kitchens??? Why??

I love all you chefs but I can see who is using what kitchens based off the packages and the outcome of the Rom. Nothing against you guys or the guys who made the kitchens possible. Here is my dilema, I want to make a clean rom. To me a clean rom is one that has the apps I want without extra files, or extra reg keys. To do this I need actual cabs. Anyone know where i can get the actual cabs for such applications as ArcSoft 3.x or 4.x? Maybe even the latest intent MIDlet manager?

java tested and worked (unless the registries, you have to apply them after flashing the rom, otherwise you can edit default.hv)
oh oh many wait for them, ok if you use them don't forget to write extracter name
NTS, there are no factory cabs for MMS, camera, etc. HTC jumbled the packages up so that the DRM registry settings are in the camera package and the streaming media registry settings are in the MMS package. Getting rid of extra reg. entries is a pain, but it's best done by analyzing the OEM packages and removing them. Also, installing these apps as cabs would eat up so much storage memory, it's really impractical to install them as such. Hence, the kitchen craze.

Cool. I like to try and keep all of the latest fixes and patches in one place and publically available. It's a pain in the arse to do, but I'd like to think it's helping the big picture...
Ok, the only issue i have with 4.x version of mms is that it replaces the Text Messages box and merges sms and mms into one folder. then you have to select new and select either sms or mms. Any way to fix this? Also, when you choose the option to try and setup the mms server it does not come up unless you are in a blank mms. hmm, more fun configs to figure out.

Hi Danny.
Downloaded and flashed this rom.
After 2 minutes "looking", I found a major problem:
I run the "Network Wizard", selected "Nederland, T-Mobile", and an error about the database showed up.
Now I can't configure any connection, so no GPRS to configure.
2 other thing I noticed:
1] Windows Live Messenger is still in WWE ?
2] No Office apps ?
The rest seems to be oke, but without a connection, there's not much fun with my Wizard.

Good luck!

I think the main problem by useing the Microwave tool is it only copies the MUI's and doesn't edit the rgu's, cpl's, exe etc.. to work with the language. But if it was there before I started my translation it had saved me a lot of work.

For those people that cant wait (like me). Copy all files in the CTHome folder to your windows directory on your sp. You then need to register the two dll files (htchome and htchomesp). You can register the files with wm5_regsvrce.exe. If you search there are many instructions on how to use this program.
aaroninoraa
can you export your reg keys about those 2 .dlls and share with us all files(.dll and .reg) so we can do it more easy?
I did this work.
Copy all files in the CTHome folder or HTCHome folder?

not a problem man. I realized that there were TONS of people on this forum that wanted to know how to do things like: "Put a program in the ROM" or "Use a Registry Tweak", so I've made it a drag-and-drop, completely automated process for beginners, while still using advanced tools for chefs like me
Yeah, this is great for starters. The command line kinda gets hard to get used to, but after a while its just like typing haha.

I was a little awkward with command prompts when I first started using KaiserKitchen, but if you use it enough it's 10x faster than a GUI, and it becomes second nature to you
Yeah, i'm used to it. Especially since i've used it so many times before. Well, i'm off to flash your rc16! xD
Excellent!!! Question when I select option 4 in the extract section(menu) I get an error ===========================================

You need to pick a base first before you can extract anything from it. If I were you, I would use a very lite ROM as the base, so you learn how it works. But, I admire that you actually give it a shot. Good job, and I wish you luck.

Thanks I got a lot to learn.
I did grab the AT&T rom 6.1 and I was able to do the extraction 1,2,3 and everything seem to work. I just was checking out what it would do if I selected option 4 and I got the error I posted.
Question Does Option 5 populate the BASE folder?
EDIT: I got it Option 5 does populate the Base Folder for you.... Now it's time to roll up my selves and learn this stuff. ....
tinkering with it, during one step it popped up a text document that I had no idea what to do with. closed it and it gave an error, then went on as if nothing happened.
Haha. We don't want to brick our phones now Travito. [;
What is a good lite ROM to use for a Tilt/HTC. There is a lot of stuff in the AT&T 6.1 ROM. Man a lot of bloatware.
I would start with NARF's lite AT&T ROM. Just my 2 cents.
