Is it possible to get WPA2 support in WM5? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Hi all:
My apologies if this has been answered elsewhere, I searched the forums and couldn't get a straight answer. Like many of you, I have played around with all the flashy WM6 ROMs that are available for the Wizard. Also like many of you, after getting over the wow factor, I find myself wanting to go back to speedy, stable WM5, which runs all my software without problems.
However, WM6 has one big feature that WM5 does not: WPA2 support for WiFi connections. I'm not going to downgrade my network's security just so my phone can update the weather forecast. Is there a way to add WPA2 support to a WM5 device? I was planning on using rev. 5 of dferreira's WM5SE ROM when it's released.

What's so great about WM6?

Hi,
While I am waiting for my MDA Pro to arrive, I have been reading a lot in the Universal section (have a BA myself).
May I ask for some valid reasons why someone would want to use homebrewed WM6 releases instead of official/customized WM5?
I do understand the fun it is to try out new things, but is it really worth it? I did not find many posts that would clear this question.
Thanks,
vma
WM6.0...
The new look and a lot faster device...
Is there any feature that won't be available with WM6, that did work fine in WM5?
Thanks,
vma
Video call isn't working yet.

The way I see it, WM6 may or may not work for you and may or may not do it for you. Try it. You can always go back to WM5. Most people don't.....
Well .... the simple answer is that I did a lot of searching and reading, and finally tried it out for myself.
I asked this very question a while ago right here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1130569&postcount=88
And came to the follwowing conclusion:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1155497&postcount=89
In the conclusion, the thing about the Bluetooth Stack / Voice Command - it was actually Voice Command that was the problem and this issue was fixed in Jrwightmcps' 2.02.00 WWE http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=297256
Crossbow ONLY!
Tell you the truth... i see the new WM6 is better eye-catching GUI not to mention the enhancement in the functionality and other usability such as email related functions. I know that MS wont just upgrade for no obvious reason nor for desktop OS compatibility.
Yet i reckon i wont -never- go back to magento! Crossbow ONLY!
@nvatvani:
Indeed your posts where the only ones I read, that contained some usefull info about the subject.
No offense to all the other members of course!
I was simply wondering about what to do when my MDA Pro arrives: replace the German firmware with a WWE WM5 one or go straight ahead to WM6 without even looking at WM5.
Also, I had some problems with my Blue Angel, when I tried WM5 on it: it may have been a coincidence, but one day after the upgrade the screen went mad and totally messed up. Only 1 Hardreset in about 100 tries would bring it back to normal for some period of time and even reflashing it with WM5 or 2003SE would not make it work normal again. The screen would get messed up suddenly for no particular reason. At the end I had to send it in for repair, which was actually a good thing, as I complained about the loose stylo and bad working hardkeys, all within warranty. I got a new key-pcb, backside and they reflashed the device with 2003SE. I posted this issue in the BA forum, but got no usefull hint. This means I am a little scared of upgrading to unofficial releases.
Other than that, I have no problems with flashing, as I do that on my other hobby (satellite receivers) frequently, including JTAG-operations for repairing bricked devices. The same applies to games consoles. (Note: I do not sell or benefit commercially from that activity and my goal is not to get illegal software or TV - not that you guy's get the wrong idea about me).
Anyway, thanks for your replies!
Cheers,
vma
What Windows Mobile 5.0 AKU 2.0 has and Windows Mobile 6 (the cooked ones, having tried them all) doesn't have, according to my experiences:
1. Videocalling - at least not a proper one
2. Bluetooth Dial Up Networking (the DUN profile)
3. Wireless Modem (yet some WM6 ROM's have it, although without shortcut in the start menu)
4. Cyberon Voice Dial by default (some WM6 ROM's have it by default, others will need a 500kB CAB to activate it)
The reason why I went back to "good old" WM5 is mainly the reliability. Ok, the OS may be a bit slower here and there, but it has all the functionality (e.g. videocalls and Bluetooth DUN), and NEVER hangs. It just always works and that's what I desperately need right now.
---
The things Windows Mobile 6 has for me that 5.0 hasn't which I miss the most:
1. High resolution browsing in the normal Internet Explorer (I don't want to use alternatives)
2. HTML email support
3. The impressive speed of the OS
Applications like WM6's Windows Live and the superb Remote Desktop Client are also available for WM5, so I don't need to miss those, otherwise I sure would, and then I might have sticked with WM6.
The new sounds and GUI are great, but I don't really miss them, since that's not a true functional thing.
Having WM5 up and running again, without freezes and memory leaking and with full HTC Universal functionality, is enough for me to be happy with it and to stick with it. If there ever will be a ROM that actually ADDS Windows Mobile 6 on top of all of this (without a single registry tweak or CAB fix needed), then it's the time for me to upgrade again.
If such a ROM will ever see the daylight, since it won't be officially available for the Universal, I don't know. I think the HTC X7500 (Athena) will be there sooner (April 2007 over here), and that one will have a official WM6 upgrade for sure. That'll be my next one, so until then: WM5 for my Universal!
So far for my opinion.
why do I use WM6

To be honest, I used them all and later delteted them after 5 2 hours. They leak a lot, ram is at minimum and useless third party applications, and a lot fo thing sodn't really work or missing (I just want a vanill aone without 3rd party applications).
Except for one rom, Darkforce, it is fast and furious, and so far I have using it for two days; battery usage is good, and no leaks. However, no video calling, and no way to set com ports for bluetooth devices. any1 has this problem?
However, common to all ROMS, no video calling, old calculator, speed dial messed up (some work and some don't), wireless connection bubble missing (yes you can install a cab but I don't want to do that).
<Mind you, contrary to other reports, I never had any freezes with any rom.
The thing that attracts me is HTML in email, High resolution mode in explorer, better remote desktop connectivity.
So I thhink I am sticking with DarkForce ROM, so far so good.
Thx

WM6 Data connections

Hi guys, after digging through the entire WM6 forum, and testing some ROM's for myself, I found a common problom among all of the WM6 ROM's
There are some issues with the dataconnections via UMTS/GPRS. Let me explain.
Let say I have an open GPRS (or UMTS) connection and am browsing some websites. I lose my connection in a tunnel so I wait. When I come out, the dataconnection is useless, and has to reconnect. Thats the part where I it all goes bad The icon will say that there is no connection anymore, but when going to the connectionmanager and modifying the connection will report that the connection is in fact in use!
To my knowledge, there is no immidate fix for this, and ive seen a lot of posts about this issue.
What makes it even more cranky is that it can also occur when the radio switches from UMTS to GRPS when connected.
The commmanger is sometimes able to correct is by restarting the phone, but many times it is forcing me to soft-reset
How did you get to all this you may ask? Well I live in a small village in Holland, and what makes it a pain for WM6 for me is that my hometown is on the border of a GPRS/UMTS zone (IN the town, GPRS - 500 meters out, UMTS) Plus the fact that when going to school, I pass through a tunnel going under water thus canceling all connections
As I said, the error comes op when roaming, or getting disconnected.
Is there anyone that can shed some more light on to this issue? (Or in the best possible case even fix it? )
Edit:
WM5 does not suffer from this.
This is actually a well documented problem amongst some Radio ROMs with WM6. Each person will tell you a different favourite Radio ROM and the only real way to find one that works for you is to test them.
My personal favourite out of quite a few that I've tested is 1.13, locality UK. Works fine for me, boosted signal performance and reconnection for data is fine for my needs, but then I don't use Push eMail or anything that requires permanent connection so I might not be the best judge for that kind of stability.
1.15 has just been released and a lot of people are saying it's the best, haven't tried it myself yet.
There is a thread titled "which radio rom works best where you are?", contains a lot of post stating which is their favourite Radio in their particular location, should help you along the way. Sorry, would give you a link, but feeling lazy
Hope it helps.

I tried the radio 1.15. Like many have said most radios are country compatible. With me the best is 1.09 and i moved to it.
Also radios are interlinked with your network providers, th4 some work better and some dont. Thats my experience.
Tried them all !!
I've posted in just about every thread and must have bored everyone with my postings on this subject, I simply can't find a combination that works reliably under WM6 - none of the Radio versions seem able to cope.
It is interesting that this has not been addressed yet, it is a fundamental issue to using the XDA as a business communication tool.
It would be good if one (or more) of the excellent XDA Developers could try & solve this before delivering any more builds that tweak minor settings & deliver questionable value to a limited audience (I hope this doesn't sound like a whinge, it is not, I like the work done here & enjoy the new feaures).
Well done for setting this up as a dedicated thread.
While I was on aku 3.2 Jwright it was smooth as sailing with radio 1.09. After moving onto wm6 there is a feeling of disatisfaction.
few hangups, communication is not very smooth, missed calls occasionally and sluggish. This is being faced very regularly.
Well!. hope to see a good solution soon.

Ive been through every radio ROM from 1.09.00 and up. The one I found working best for me is 1.15.00 but the issue isnt resolved. It will still happen To see if the radio is actualy better than others I flashed the stock WM5 ROM to my 9000 again to see if it will occur there as well, but no sigar. WM5 is having no problems.
It happens stricktly on WM6 ROM (any version, and any radio) :'(
push mail best option
Hello
So which ROM is the best option for a working push mail?
From the above comments I guess a WM5 - which brings another question : which one is the faster/most stable, at least to compare with WM6 ?
From what I've read, Jwrigh 3.2 seems to be better than Helmi 3.5
A side questions: can anyone do manual activesync to mail2web with SSL enabled?
Thanks

My personal opinion goes to the Qtek factory ROM. It is pretty much vanilla and has decent speed and good reliability. The ROM works good with almost any radio version (1.15.00 is very nice)
As for WM6, many people have it running great, but I am having problems with radio stability.
Tested today again with radio 1.15.00 and the JWright 2.02.00 WWE Crossbow, and no luck. All morning was great, no hickups. And going home this afternoon the whole thing jams up. A little baloon stating that dailing failed or something of that matter. When I restarted the phone via Commmanager, it went working again but switching from UMTS to GPRS locked it up showing the baloon constantly
AFAIK, the developers are aware of this issue. Jwright did a few enhancements on 1.13 with the release of 2.02, it was better, but unfortunately still left a few glitches... Have faith though, I know these guys only do it as a little hobby, but they do come up with some incredible results 99% of the time
Honnestly - the work being done is truely amazing. I should know - I did maintain my own rom for the Sharp Zaurus 6000 so I can tell you how tough it is to fix small bugs - I remember spending weeks to find a workaround for a keyboard issue which was due to hardcoded stuff in Qtopia libraries (what a shame). I had to resort to kernel hacking to change the keycodes, then do the same for the console and Qtopia, etc.
I was contemplating to work on Linux for the Universal, but it is such a great device right now with WM6 that I don't want to spend time on that. I couldn't do much better with free software at the moment (except add more stability and run GAIM which can work behind http-proxy - I need that for my flat rate wap !). Push mail is a killing function.
Anyway, now that the network connectivity issue seems to be pinpointed to the OS (instead of the radio rom) maybe something will be possible ? On GNU/Linux, I would add a script to cron, to try to ping some IP, resolve a FQDN - whatever, and if the connection fail issue a stop/start to the ppp daemon. If this fails too, do the same to the GSM. It shouldn't be very hard to code on WM.
I really enjoy the Universal - good form factor, almost complete (I would just add GPS and more RAM). It is really useful to me in my "off-line" life.
Guylhem
I couldnt agree more on how much great work is done on the Universal (Or any other HTC device for that matter ) And I have great faith in the experts on this forum that a solution will be found
i have tried Jwrights WM6 ROm with 1.13 and 1.15 Radio, the GPRS never connrcts in Egypt. i then tried Darkforces ROM with 1.13 and 1.15 Radio again the GPRS never connects in Egypt.
i then tried Jwrights Rom with Radio 1.09 and the GPRS works 100%. i think there are some issues with WM6 and 1.13 and 1.15 Radio Roms.
does anyone have any other thoughts?
Ill give 1.09 another try over here in the Netherlands te see if there are any minor differences I can spot (Currently using 1.15.00)
Hmmm,
I've got two places were I go on the internet using gprs/umts. And it gives two different results. But when you look at the coverage it can't be a coincidence. Beause at home i lose my signal when it switches between gprs and umts which it does all the time. And at that adres the coverage for just umts is not that good but that for gprs is. really annoying.
But at that other place i have a superb connection with a great signal. and that coincides with the coverage.
So it means that what is important is how a certain rom handles the changes between umts and gprs. Which is already known now is the question who makes sure that the change between umts and gprs goes smoothly??

I'm also in the Netherlands (Arnhem-Utrecht) and I've tried lots of radio roms.
In my view it's true that wm5 works with different roms then WM6.
I've tried 1.12 (fixed) 1.15 and 1.09 with WM6
1.09 is in my view the best, 1.12 and 1.15 both had problems with the BT and the device hanging when soft-resetting.
I'm going to try 1.14.10 1.13 and 1.10 also to see which off those works best.

Noob - What rom to use?

Hello there,
I have some questions that I’m sure every newbie here will need answered.
1- Are there any signs that there will be an official WM6 update?
2- What options will the device lose if updated to an unofficial ROM update? I heard something about video calls and Wi-Fi.
3- What will I gain if I updated my device to WM6?
4- Which is the best ROM update out there and what’s its limitation?
5- Is it stable?
Thanks a lot for advace.
dark hawk, you really have to read around a little.
Unfortunately the (non official) WM6 roms are in a constant state of flux, but you should be comforted by the fact that the WM6 Universal Rom was one of the first "non official" Wm6 roms released. So it's stable enough.
I ran an early one for several months, no problems.
I suggest trying a few, as they will rarely cause any permanent issues, and most are improvements over WM5.
Video calling might be lost. But everything else seems to work well enough.
No idea about an official WM6 rom I'm afraid. Check out HTC's websites.

ANSWERS
1. No there will no official WM6 for UNIVERSAL
2. Well you will not lose much other than slight issues with stability (which is also getting refined with the newer cooked ROMS)
Both Video Call and wifi work fine now . and with the new releases to come i am sure it will get further improved
Try using NEW WM6 PRO Business V7 VIDEOCALL by Laurentius26
or indra's UNI WM6 XOJ Version(WWE) by INDRA
both of them are very good ROMS with video call working and most of the bugs/isuues solved
and i am sure even if microsoft had planned an officila release it wouldn't have come close to these
(Remember the days when we had official WM5 and we still loved to use the ROMS cooked by HELMI, INDRA, JW.... Lt.Cmdr.Ivan)
4. No best ROM as such, you will have to find time, experiment with each of them to know which one suits you the most (Tip :- A newer version does not have to be the best of all)
Even after so many releases still there are lots of us who use Jwrightmcps Crossbow ROM Update 2.02.02 WWE, though its not the latest
5. Stability - i will not comment on it as i think people react differntly to the same ROM, for eg - i find indra's UNI WM6 XOJ Version(WWE) by INDRA, very good and stable with no hangups, but if you open the thread for the same there you will find a group of people with a different school of thought. for them its not stable. So the best way to find out is to devote a few weekends on it and experiment flashing the new ROMS, and look for yourself

Video Call is reported working for most people for Laurentius WM6 V7 Video Call and Indra's ROM if they follow instruction. Do not know why some of them do not work.
Unfortunately my Uni died before I could try WM6.
Perhaps a poll could be created of which Rom is used. That way we know which people have generally plumped for and the more people using it with success the more chance that installing it might be a good idea for somebody else.
I second the idea for a poll.
I've just loaded Jwrightmcps's ROM and am very impressed. Very stable, no real issues for me. I don't need video calling so don't think I'll be changing again soon.

Help with upgrading my K-JAM to WM6 & picking a ROM, etc.

Hey all, I hope you'll go easy on me as this is the first time I've ever flashed a WM device and the prospect of going wrong has caused me to post here! If anyone could talk me through this I'd be most greatful.
First off thanks for the guide which I've been studying for the best part of the day! I now think I'm ready to give it a try.
I have an i-mate K-JAM with an IPL/SPL of 2.16 which I assume means I have a G3.
I hope I've got it right...
I assume I'll need to downgrade using the Button rom to 1.05 then use Lokiwiz to perform a CID unlock (dunno if my device is CID locked or not, I'll just guess that it is).
Next step will be to upgrade to this T-Mobile ROM and then upgrade to IPL/SPL 3.08 to make the device boot faster.
Now it's time to flash with a WM6 rom right?! .
I'm a little wary of the huge variety of ROMs available. I realise I can't ask 'what's the best ROM' which is fine but I'd like to know which roms people would recommend for maintaining the same functionality of the original WM5 rom that came with my K-JAM, give me the ability to make VoIP calls (I have a voipcheap sip account) and be rather speedy.
I've heard good things about the TNT ROM which appears to have the above things I need. I assume this is the ROM I'll need - I think I'd prefer to add apps seperately so I guess it's best to go with the 'Official' version over 'Professional'.
About VoIP - I've seen people have been having issues with the other persons sound coming from the loudspeaker, has this issue been sorted now?
Let's say I decide to go back to WM5 (for whatever reason) at a later stage, I assume this'll still be possible by following the exact same downgrade/upgrade steps in the guide?
I hope I'm on the right path. Thanks to anyone who can help out!

Sorry, I've tuned into your question late. If it helps, I'm using mfrazz's XM6r3 ROM (I tried a more recent one that was buggier and went back to 3.) VoIP (Internet Calling) worked "right out of the box"- I just had to load one of the VoIP configuration utilities floating around here to enter my provider settings.
The only two issues really are that it uses the loadspeaker instead of the earspeaker (but bluetooth works fine) and the biggest issue- the Wizard is just too d**m slow for Internet Calling to work well- the audio is very choppy without overclocking (which I'm loathe to do.)
Fring, from Fring.com is a decent app for VoIP on slow WM phones like the Wizard, so I have that installed as well. It lets you use Skype, Google Talk, and a few other VoIPs as well as one SIP provider all in one app. It's not perfect either- it also uses the loudspeakers, it's akward to dial from (it has no real "dial pad"- you can either dial an existing contact by selecting one, or another number by selecting any contact and "overriding" their displayed number), it doesn't support DTMF (so there's no way to "press 1 for English...") and it always leaves the device volume at full blast when you exit the app, but it's got the best audio quality of any VoIP app I've used on the Wizard. (I used it from Mexico back in January over my hotel's WiFi to make $0.02/minute calls back to the States rather than T-Mobile's generous $1.49/min roam rate!)

WPA2 on Ipaq RX1950

Hi all,
Someone told me about this forum/site today, really a huge pile of knowlegde and resources!
A few months ago, someone offered me a HP Ipaq RX1950 (for free. Take it or put it in the trash...).
It had WM5 on it.
After some searching and the tip I got about this site today, I was able to get WM6.1 running, which I retrieved from this site.
My wireless network at home has WPA2 (TKIP+AES) security enabled (because it's the only safe thing for WiFi), but there's no WPA2 option in the dropdown box in my WM6.1 installation.
Any way to get WPA2 working?
Welcome to forums
I am not sure your device is build by HTC, as here we dedicate only to them.
Have a look here to find out if your device is made by HTC:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/
Good luck,
I did not know you were only dedicated to HTC...
The WM6.1 version I was referring is located here btw.
Anyway: I think this is a general software thing, not a hardware related issue. So if any one is able to help, I would be grateful.
