File Management (Clean-up) - General Topics

Hio all. I'm having a problem with my T-Mobile Dash, but it's such an ordinary seeming problem within WM6 that I think it belongs here.
Pretty much, since yesterday, I've been getting errors saying that I'm low on storage. First thing I did was dump the PIE cache (10 MB), and the problem seemed to go away. However, once I woke up the next day (today), I was getting the same error. Lo and Behold, I'm down to 3.5K of internal storage, and I've even dropped to 0B.
All my caches have been dumped, and I keep everything sizable (pictures, video, audio, documents, programs larger than 300K) on my microSD card, but for some reason, something has been consuming tons of storage.
I'm trying to figure out, what files are safe to delete? Below is a rough sketch of my filesystem
Application Data: 10.9 MB (Largest contents: "Home" folder at 612 KB; "WordToGo" with a single file "22960WdDoc.dvz" sized at 934 KB; "Sounds" with various stock tones; "Volatile" at 8.1 MB, with 80 0B folders, "MIM4AF9.tmp" at 1.9 MB, "MIM9D83.tmp" at 3.9 MB, and "MIME3C0.tmp" at 2.4 MB)
cemail.vol: 1.3 MB
Documents and Settings: 996 KB
MAPI: 0B
Mobsh.txx: 1 KB
msg.txt: 4 KB (contains gibberish I never saw before)
mxip_initdb.vol: 28 KB
mxip_lang.vol: 96 KB
mxip_notify.vol: 212 KB
mxip_system.vol: 192 KB
My Documents: 3.4 MB
pim.vol: 3.4 MB
Program Files: 17.8 MB (Already scoured for caches)
Reg: 1 KB
Temp: 8KB
untitled: 1 KB
Windows: 100 MB
The Windows Folder is the one that interests me the most. When I browse it with Total Commander hiding all ROM files, I still get a mind bogglingly large number of files. When browsing on my computer, I am told I have over 1,560 files. For example, there are 31 image files that start with an underscore (_), and I've got a whole bunch DSM and RGU files (94 DSMs at about 252 KB, 54 RGUs at 1.3 MB) and a ton of other files I can't identify.
Any clues on what I could delete, or suggestions on tools that do some memory maintenance?
Thanks for the help!

Do not delete stuff from your windows directory.
a) Not all OS files are marked as ROM. You still see a lot of OS with the ROM option off.
b) If you do manage to delete something from windows one app or another is guaranteed to stop working.
c) Your only safe bets are the tmp files in volotile and whatever you got in My Documents folder.
d) Do not touch vol files - these are contacts and other system databases.

A thread on cleaning up. I should've started this eons ago.
Most of the programs you install tend to want to put anywhere between 1 - 50 files in your Windows Directory. This is one of the reasons it takes forever to load the contents of the Windows directory.
Over the last few weeks, in the process of achieving a one click setup after hard resets, I managed to narrow down and filter out what goes into the Windows folder. In all I have about 1684 files under my Windows Folder after installing Esmertec JBED, Resco Explorer, SafeMode, WLM, SMS DR Fix, Transcriber and ATI Fix for Hermes using the Supa Dupa Lite WM6 ROM.
I have noticed that there are scores of image files built into the ROM. It would be great if some of the chefs could move the image files into another folder called 'images' under the Windows folder to minimize the time it would take to list the contents of the Windows Folder. Most of the registry entries could be edited to point to this new folder, unless of course some apps have the image locations hard coded into the programs themselves.
Coming back to your problem, the only solution aside from a monitored installation after a hard reset is to delete the Volatile Folder under Application Data and the *.tmp files.

Remiving unremovable files taking up space in windows file

I have a Tilt with wm6 and I am running low on space. I noticed in my windows folder that I have several wma files in there that I did not put in there. They are taking up around 12mb of space but the system will not let me remove them! I have Total Commander and even after changing them to a non-system file, it still won't let me remove them. Do I need them for some odd reason? If not, how can I get rid of them and recover some much desired space?
For example, there is a Gin Blossoms song, a Stylistics song?, Ted Leo Pharmacy song, Communique song, the Oranges, Ray Charles, Frightened something, Assembly of something, and I want to delete the 3G up wave file and video since I have them disabled.
Thanks loads for any help!
you'll need to cook your own rom, or find another rom to install that has all those files removed...
rom files are locked and must be removed before the rom is flashed onto your device.
I was feeling like that was the case. Oh well. Which ROM seems to be the best out there? I have read several posts about Dutty's and how good it is. Anyways, thanks alot for you response.
what i did before was to create a blank file using notepad and then save it as a wma file with the same filename as the ones i wanted to remove. then using Resco Explorer, i copied it over the original file.
i know this will give me more storage space, will it give me more ram too?
no flash ram cant be used as app ram
and for at least most devices not using all the os flash dont even yeld any
storage ram for usage

Oldsap! I hope you realize that by doing this, you actually accomplished NOTHING. Files in ROM can be "covered" with a different version, but they are still there, taking up the space they already did. You merely supplanted a newer version with a smaller size (maybe "0"), covering the one that was there already.
Test my theory, try deleting the 0-byte file you copied there, and miraculously, the old file will appear again, untouched, and the same size it always was.
Test my theory again ... "cover up" one of the files that's 1MB with a file by the same name, but 0 bytes. Then check your storage space, and you will see that you did not save a single byte.
This is just the way that ROM files work. The only way to get rid of them is to cook them out - period.

Slow Vista file transfer to //Windows on device.

Hi everybody,
I am, as most of you know a skinner here on the forum.
So first of all i little explanation:
All dialers that I know of install all of their images in the /Windows directory on your mobile device. So when I skin a dialer I have to copy my files to that directory over and over.
In windows XP, the browser only had to load the file list from /Windows once and when it was done doing so, it blasted all images to the /Windows folder.
So I had to wait half a minute and then I just copied over all files, great!
Now I use Vista and it has to load then complete new file list for every file it want's to copy to the /Windows directory. With my previous dialers, I was ok with that. (+/- 20-30 images) But with the new Opal and Diamond dialer it has gotten a lot more. (total of ~350 images) That means I have to wait 350*30= 10500 seconds -> almost three hours for all files to be copied! And that is just demoralising!
So any suggestions on making this work faster are much appreciated!
I've tried to use Total Commander but it does not recognise my pocket pc and nor does FastCopy.
Thanks in advance (even for reading the enitre story )
Well, for me I had to connect my phone to my PC using the USB Mass Storage option instead of Activesync to increase the copying speed. I am using a Touch Pro.
That will prevent me from seeing the windows directory :/
Only sd card is visible then.

Your device has to refresh after every file copy, or Vista has to refresh the file list? What vista file browser are you using? Are you using Windows Mobile Device Center?
I have Vista Business x64 and I'm not having any problems copying to and from the \Windows dir. I will help you as much as possible.
It's not copying from the device but to the device that takes a very long time.
I'm using the standard file browser from vista and Ultimate x86 with WMDC.
My laptop (Windows Vista Home Basic) takes ages when copying files from my laptop to the /Windows directory on my device too. When I try to copy files for a Manilla2D theme for example, it takes about 5 hours.
In Vista make sure that you have "show hidden files and folder" deselected in Folder Options. Also, try disabling the "Show system files" option as well. This should minimize the number of files that explorer will try to display when refreshing, thus a speed increase.
I'll try to look into this more, as I just copied all the opal phone canvas files to \windows from my vista machine. It only took ~2 minutes to copy all the files.

But when I do this, I can't access the /Windows directory because its a system file?

Hmmm. Do you have your device configured with Mobile Device Center (setup to sync)? I ask because I don't sync anything with it. I simply use it to connect to the phone. Maybe this has something to do with it.
I'll also check the speed settings in Device Manager. Maybe there is something to adjust there.
One option I use is to pull the card and use a USB card reader to drag the files over. Lightening fast. The other is the USB connection option on some of the newer ROMS i.e. DCDs, Scrosslers (DCD variant). Has very fast directoru refresh and copy.

Vista has it own problems. Maybe do a double boot and start XP when you need to . . .
From an IT standpoint this is why many companies and people are not using Vista . . .
I know it is not the solution fo choice but it would work . . . .

Freeing up space from Windows directory

Hi, I really need to get some of my space back on my Verizon Diamond. In the windows directory i've noticed many duplicate files and the original opera cab and other files that are just taking up space. (For example: Theres a folder for rings and then there are copies of the same rings just laying around in the windows directory.) Ive tried using Total commander to delete the extra files and they won't delete. Does anyone know how i can remove these excess files.

LOTS of strange files into Windows (manila) - HTC Diamond

Hello dear HTC fanatics,
I am an happy owner of an HTC Touch Diamond since 4 months. I noticed that between the month of April and now a lot of files appeared into Windows folder which were not existing or not displayed before.
These files seems related with TouchFlo (manila). These files are not saved with a backup tool like Sprite Backup. These files seem to be Read only files and cannot be moved or deleted from the desktop XP. It sounds strange to me that they would be placed in Flash because they were not existing at the beginning... These are more than 1500 additional files displayed into Windows folder which were not at the begining! Now my Windows folder has more than 4000 files!
Here are some file names I found into Windows folder which are part of very big lists of files of the same kind:
0_0409.dat 00da6601-75e2-44b8-bd9d-54fa4fcbf331.dsm

Is this possible that there has been a system silent update during a connection on one of HTC server?
Did I tap on an EXE located into Windows folder that I shouldn't and which has uncompressed all this material by error?
Is this normal, does it harm Windows Mobile functionality as well as TouchFlo functionality (it seems it is still working fine)?
Can I live with that or should I hard reset my Diamond?
Could anyone please help me to determine if my device is working correctly or not?
Did anyone else ever noticed this?
I thank you very much in advance for your help.

More details:
I didn't install any system themes or other system customization else than GProfile and GScroll, GAlarm, Pocket Informant, PocketClock, Skype, Sprite Backup and a lots of games (EA, Gameloft, HeroCraft, Astraware etc.).
My ROM is the latest standard HTC one: 2.03.401.3 WWE (02/05/09)
I am wondering why my Windows folder now shows 4282 files where in the past month there wasn't all these files displayed. I just tried to move some of these from the PPC to the PC to see the result. There was no result at all as they are not able to be moved or removed. But anyway all these files where not visible in the past.
That is my question, what are they and do they limit the RAM memory that is available for me?
After a soft reset I have: 62 % free space indicated inthe top menu of the TouchFlo. And in Settings\System I have:
Storage
-------
Total: 82.56 MB
In use: 47.83 MB
Free: 34.73 MB
Program
--------
Total: 107.02 MB
In use: 70.36 MB
Free: 36.66 MB
So I don't know if these small free amounts have to do with all these additional files discovered into Windows or not?...
Strange... It seems that we have the best WM hackers around here but people are more chatty at PPCGeeks!

Seem all native files to me.
These should be present in the \\windows\ dir.
eg.:
*.dsm Digital Signature Manager file, always present in a "package", is present in all ROMs (there are a lot of them in most ROMs)
002726c9_manila , a manilla file, present in all ROMs containing Manilla (also loads of them)
CallLogFrameInLUp_Port.png, a part of the dialer (this is the "portret version, so also a landscape version is present, and so there are lots of those for lots of things in the dialer..)
spd.5x4.English.kdb keyboard file
spd.5x4.German.kdb dito (multiple languages, multiple files..)
*.provXML provisional XML file, they overide some reg settings, file placements etc..
etc etc
Nothing strange, just your basic WiMo ROM files
Regards,
EqX
Thanks for your reply the-equinoxe.
I received a confirmation from HTC that these are ROM files.
The strange fact is that they were not visible into Windows XP Explorer via ActiveSync in the past... I tried to hide and display protected system files but this didn't change the PPC Windows displayed content.

Folders and files recreating themselves?!

Hello all!
I ran into an unusual... let's say quirk yesterday on my LG Optimus F3. I plugged my phone into my computer and set it to Media sync mode to move some downloaded pictures from /sdcard/Download onto my pc's hard drive. I cut and pasted the 100 some files where I wanted them to be, at least I thought so. I made a mistake so I hit cancel on the Windows dialog box after it moved about 50 of them. I pasted them again in the spot I wanted this time, and it moved them to my pc's hard drive as expected. Now here's where it gets weird...
I noticed that 49 of the pictures still have entries as an album in my gallery app. But instead of the proper thumbnails, it shows a cracked picture frame icon for all of them. So I open up ES File Explorer and there is 49 .jpg files inside my Download folder, all with a size of zero bytes. I delete them from my Download folder again. Weird, I thought but oh well. they're gone now. However, the next time I open my gallery app, they are back! All 49 blank, 0 byte .jpg files. So I hooked my phone back up to my pc and used Windows Explorer to delete them this time. But they keep coming back! So far I have repeatedly tried these methods as well as deleting them through adb shell, but to no avail. I have uninstalled and reinstalled ES File Explorer. I have tried a different file manager app (Astro). I have deleted the gallery3d folder in /sdcard/Android/data. I deleted the entire Downloads folder (it recreates that too). I have even cleared the cache and data for both the gallery and media storage apps. Those 49 files keep regenerating themselves as empty 0 byte files. No other files or folders on either the internal storage or external sd card are affected. I've even done a factory reset/data wipe/cache wipe/dalvik wipe/Rom reflash but they still come back.
Does anyone have any advice? It would be greatly appreciated! The only other thing I can think of to do is repartition the internal storage, but I don't know how to use fdisk or parted and I don't wanna make things even worse by screwing around.
Thanks in advance!
