WM5 can use mp3 stored in storage card as ringtone - General Topics

I am very sure that WM5 can use mp3 files stored in storage card as ringtone, with no additional software and no registry tweak
The situation is, in my device (HTC Trinity), the drop box of ringtones does show the name of a song which is stored in the storage card and it works very well.
WM5 seems have a link redirected to the mp3 (a shortcut?)
but I have no idea why this happen. What I only did (related to ringtones) are
1, I installed Inesoft address book 1.68, few weeks later, uninstalled it.
2, I copied the song file to \Application\Sounds, few days later, removed it. (\Application\Sounds is empty now)
Then, I found this special "shortcut" to the mp3 file
I tried to find out which file in my device is the "shortcut", but found nothing. So strange it is. (and no relevant pointer in the registry also)
Anybody have idea how this happen? Thanks!

Couldt u please give how select SMS ringtones from SDcard

i read, for incoming call then we can change this registry:
"Directory" of HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring.
then we can move all the ringtones to any directory we want
the question is, how about SMS notification ring?? i want to use the same ringtone for SMS (my own .wav) is it possible? and which registry i have to change so xda will look at those directory in SDcard instead of "\windows" ?
thx alot!!!!!!!!!!
AFAIK, there's nothing you can do about it. SMS notifications are handled exactly like all other Windows notifications (like AS connect/disconnect, new mail, start menu sounds, ...). I think the \Windows path is fixed in the system.
Besides, you shouldn't set a directory on a storage card for ringtones. If a call comes in during standby, the storage card might not work, and thus the device will remain silent.
I have my ringtone on storage card. If it doesn't get picked up, the tone reverts to windows default ring.
i had succesfuly move all my phone ringtone (for incoming call notification) to my SDcard. just move all of them then change the registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring
Directory="\Storage Card\My own special Ringtone" (or whatever )
but how about sms notification???? can some1 give me the registry address for this? thx again...
i think that maybe it's hardcoded
as ringtones are a part of cellphone stuff
and other sounds like sms is a part of the pda sounds
prob the same reason why only ringtones can be wma
and normal rings need be wav
also i'm not really sure why it is you need to change that reg setting
i just go into the program called add ringtones
when it starts it load all valid files on my pda and storage
and the ones i check
will be available as ring tones when i go into the phonesettings
thats how i got the ring tone i use now because i fell over it in there
and it came with some demo of everqust and was the sound of a skeleton's attack or something
sorry for my ignorance, anyone can help me where and how can i can i change the registry to set my ringtones from storage instead of main memory?
get a registry editor
go to this reg
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring.
edit the value
"Directory" to point to where you want the files
if you want to have personalized sms tones all you have to do is record(or save as) the sound/file to .wav format then move it to your windows directory on your PPC.
Then all you have to do is goto >settings>sounds & notifications..notifications tab then chose the event you want to change and select the new .wav e.g. myown.wav file for sms its "messaging: new text msg." the file size is usually around 30k so its not really goin to affect your PPC performance...
if you want to have a selection just save them all on your SD card somewhere and move them to windows dir when you feel like a change and delete the old if memory is really worrying you.
a reg edit for storage of sms tones is really not needed
ps the same could be said of ringrones except they are usually bigger in file size, and you would put them in widows\rings directory instead
but then again i rarely change my tones
Speedn
thanks bro.. i've done it....
@ yankee:
in my experience, its useless to change the registry.. even we change iit, the ringtone will be set back to the default , right??? no solution for this, until now... the "guru" said, that because the sdcard too slow, so when a call coming in, xda "cant" find those ringtone in the sdcard so it takes any (the default).. bad luck.....
@rudegar and speedn:
the reason for that registry editing is: we want to keep for ex. 200 ringtones in SDCARD, not in windows folder this way, we dont have to do "right click-use as ringtone " which mean tell the xda to save it from sdcard to win folder. we cant fit those 200ringtones inside the RAM, right??
but somehow, like i said above, this method doenst work
@erwinsie,
I did not point the registry to the storage card, I pointed it to the internal storage of the phone and its working fine with me. I have not tried using the storage card
\Storage\Ringtones
I am using XDA IIi
@yankee...
well.. u lucky to have 128 ram... but i still hope that someday some1 can show me how to store (and use directly) my ringtones collections from SDCARD. mini only has 64 ram
sorry to misunderstand u..

Ringtones in \Storage\Rings

I have performed BigStorage and would like to know the reg hack to change the location for ringtones from \windows\rings to \Storage\Rings. I have tried but failed and searching this site has proved fruitless. I sure it can be done and have seen one forum which mentioned doing but not how!!!
here you are DMan
Hkey_current_user\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring
change the Directory from \windows\Rings to \Storage\Rings
Thanks Shams99 but that is the one I thought it was when looking so have changed that but when I then try to add a music file by "right click" and select "set as ring tone" it copies this file to the default \windows\rings. Am I being stupid? please tell me I am so there is a simple answer  but include instructions
I also set this and soft reset just incase!
Can't move rings to storage
I'm having trouble pointing to \Storage Card\Rings as well. I have windows mobile 5.0 k-jam. I modified the registry setting for
HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring and changed the directory from \Windows to \Storage Card. I've confirmed that a Rings folder exists in \Storage Card. When I go in to phone options and try to change the ring tone, it's still looking in to \Windows\Rings for ring tones and not \Storage Card\Rings.
Does anyone know what could be the problem here?
Thanks!
It works for me, did you soft-reset after the registry change?
oltp,
Yes i did a soft reset. I've also verified after the reset the settings in the registry. The changes indeed are there. However, the phone application doesn't show the contents of \Storage Card\Rings\. Instead it still shows the contents of \Windows\Rings\.
Very strange, what's your rom version?
no problem on mine.
dude,u can never set the ring path to your sd card 'cause when you turn off your phone, the electricity supply of SD card will be cut off.So every time it rings, windows is unable to read the ringtone file.
so just copy the ringtone to your storage, never be on sd.
cheers

Well, after trying this tweak for almost a week now....I have discovered something VERY interesting....I have a Dopod 818Pro (HTC Prophet) running WM5. I tried like hell to get this tweak to work for almost a straight week now and it just WOULD NOT work. Well, quite by accident I realized that I had copies of my ringtones on the SD card to begin with and lo' and behold, it works on it's own!!!! I'm not sure if this is something to do with WM5 or the way Dopod conditioned the OS for their use, but it does work all on its own WITHOUT doing a reg tweak. I now have all my ringtones stored on the SD Card (not in a folder) and several contacts have their own ringtone assigned and each and every time I get a call from one of those contacts (whether the phone is on or not), the phone rings with that contacts ringtone!!!! VERY Cool!!!
BTW my registry string looks like this:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Sound Categories\Ring\Directory\Windows\
Just thought I would share!!

It is said to be very important to add the trailing "\" to the registry value. So change the value to "\Storage Card\Rings\" or whatever it is you want. But just as said before, it is a bad idea to store Ringtones on Storage Card. Just donate a few kbytes of your BigStorage and you will be fine. You can also convert your mp3 to wma which takes even less space and the audio quality is almost the same (at least on the small speaker we are talking about). If you need Hi-Fidelity ringing from your phone, pay the London Symphonic orchestra to follow oyu arond
how you change the registri?
Hi how you change the reg. i didnt test it on wm5 thanks a lot guys
1.Hkey_current_user\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring
change the Directory from \windows\Rings to \Storage\Rings
2.Hkey_current_user\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\InCall
change the Directory from \windows\ to \Storage\
javascript:emoticon('')
After doing the reg tweak, when u ppl do the "set as ringtone" thing, it displays something like: copied ringtone to \windows\rings. Right....
Well its a bug in the program....the program actually copies it to the location specified in the registry, but displays a default msg which must have been preset by the programmer...must say bad programming...
but anyway useful program....
try it out....apply the reg tweak....the set a file as ringtone...and go to the directory u entered in the registry...and presto...
faysalshoaib you indeed are right, as you say dont worry about the message, this is red herring. I was doing the classic mistake of believing the message, doh.... it work as you say. Thanks for replies and effort.

Yup this works for me too. Simply put the ringtone into the directory \Storage\ and viola, you can select the ringtone from the pulldown menu of ringtones within the "Sounds and Notifications" application.
No need to perform any registry hack. This is on a JAMin.
Ringtones on the Storage Card without any tweaks
in WM5, if you put your MID or MP3 files on the root of the storage card or in if you create a folder on your storage card called My Documents and put the MID and MP3 files there, then they will automatically be found by the OS as available ringtones. This worked in pre 2.x and post 2.x builds.
No Reg Tweaking necessary.
There is a simple solution
1) One can use Photo Contacts so that one can store Rings on one's SD card any folder.
2) One can keep the mp3 and mid files open on SD card(Not in any folder) these are well recognised in the Ringtone selection box of the phone settings.
Change ringtones to Storage?
There is simple way!! Down RESCO FILE EXPLORER to your Magician. WM2003 is not registtry available. You can do it so easy!!
its "Storage Card" and not "\Storage Card\" on my device.

Bluetooth OBEX PUSH - Change default location

Hello,
I have a MDA Wizard and have been trying to change the default location of the files transferred to the storage card with no success. I changed the BaseDir value in the registry, but it does not work. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
yea me too, im looking for a solution. changed BaseDir and even change the My Documents path to Storage Card. Nothing so far. anyone know?
New location for files received by bluetooth
I came accross this program in this forum somewhere. Really good. Give it a try.
Just run the cab file and soft reset. After that, run the program whenever you want to switch bluetooth on and it puts a bluetooth icon on the system tray. double click icon and go to settings and set the dir where you want to receive the file and you're ready to go.
I've tried getting a really big file too just to see if this merely moves the file to the other location after receiving or actually changes the location of incoming files and found out it changes the location.
Let me know if this works for you.

and Version 1.5 Coming Soon
Partial Success...
This is an old thread but I think is directly related to what I'm trying to do. I've seen many other threads trying to solve the same problem, so I won't create a new one. Anyway, first, here is the info:
AT&T 8525
HERM: 100
ROM: 3.62.502.3 (Offical AT&T)
Results:
Successfully transfered 2 test files from my laptop (XP SP2 Tosiba Bluetooth 4.00.22D) directly to my storage card:
AdbeRdr80_en_US.exe - 21,822,168 bytes
Tears of a Dragon.mp4 - 8,572,344 bytes
How:
Added a STRING value BaseDir to the HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OBEX\{000...} set to: "/Storage Card/"
Problem / Temporary Solution:
Using Resco I can see the file in the Storage Card as soon as the beam is over, however the OBEX prompts you if you want to save the file or not. If you click NO the file gets deleted. If you click YES, the file gets moved after two seconds to \My Documents or some files just go nowhere(?). So before I actually answer the prompt, I just copy the file elsewhere on my card and then click NO on the prompt.
Analysis / Conclusions (so far):
1. The official AT&T ROM does not have OBEX FTP service installed (obexfile.dll). It only has the OBEX Default Inbox service (obexinbx.dll).
2. The obexinbx.dll is not behaving as expected. Ex: Why "/Storage Card/" vs. "\Storage card\"; Adding the DWORD value DisableUI does not eliminate the prompts as it should; If I delete the TransportAuntheticate value in the same key, it just reappears, yet the dll is not supposed to use that value as per MSDN2.
Could somebody try to duplicate my results and/or see if there is a way to disable the prompts? Thanks in advance!
Has anyone tried this? Please?
Here are some screenshots to better explain what is happening:
1. Add BaseDir value to the OBEX key.
2. Send test file from my laptop.
3. PPC displays 1st UI prompt (recfileprompt.jpg)
4. Laptop displays progress indicator for file transfer. (progress.jpg)
5. When transfer is complete, PPC display 2nd UI prompt. (uiprompt.jpg)
6. I can confirm the test file did transfer to the SD card (fileinssdcard.jpg)
7. If I click on YES the file disappears (but some files get moved to \My Documents). If I Click NO the file disappears.
So... Is there a way to get rid of these prompts? Or to make them not move or delete the file once is in the SD Card?
Thanks,

Unfortunately, the contents of my HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OBEX\ are the folders Services and Transport. There is no {0000-0000...} folder there. It exists though in the folder Services, so for my device, it is HKLM\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\OBEX\SERVICES\{0000...}. After adding the key, the temporary storage for the received file is ideed SD Card so I can grab it before responding to the prompt.
Nevertheless, either if I respond YES or NO for the file save prompt, the file is deleted from SD Card and does not reappear anywhere on the device, so it does not get moved, but deleted.
Notes:
For me it does not matter weather I write "/Storage Card/" or "\Storage Card\", it still receives to Storage Card, but regardless of what I choose, YES or NO, it deletes the file.

Exactly. This is the best I could get it to work, by just copying or moving the file to another SD Card location (or renaming it) before responding to the prompt. Anyway, this is kind of an old post. I had orginally done this since Dr. Yar crashed on my phone. Since then, I discovered HTC Bluetooth FTP Explorer 1.2, which adds an FTP tab to your Bluetooth Connections settings, where you can specify the default location for incoming bluetooth files.
Thanks for trying it out though!
PS,
I was trying to upload HTC Bluetooth cab, but there is a problem with the database. Anyway, I got it from VP3G's AddOn pack in the Hermes forum. A quick search should find it for you.

I don't know whether you are referring to this (which is inside my rom), but look at my settings. Even with these, Bluetooth still receives to Device and saves to Device\My Documents.

Yes. That's it. It works fine for me. Is your SD Card name "Storage Card"? I would also try using the browse button and selecting different folders inside the SD Card.

Just tried. Same thing!
Well. That is strange. I don't have a Trinity. I have a Hermes. What I would do at this point, is first, try installing the BT FTP cab over your existing one (backup first!). If that doesn't work, try removing/re-inserting the SD Card and also if possible another SD Card. Could there be a write access-protect restriction on your card that forces the OS to use the default My Documents location?
Anyway I have to go back now to my other life , but if I think of something else I'll let you know. Sorry you have problems
OBEX vs FTP
That bluetooth setting is only for FTP transfers. OBEX is the "native" transfer protocol that phones et al. use. Changing the setting for FTP received files doesn't alter the OBEX ones!
I'm going to try Dr Yar, but would love to find a registry setting for this!
I've just found this one as a cure, about to try it..

[Q] Does Call Surprise Work For Xperia X1?

I installed Microsoft Compact NET Framework 3.5
And
Then I installed Call Surprise 1.21.
My phone does not ring my mp3!
And when I install the test software, it says the names of my MP3's have been found.
Here is what I put in the first box (search in folders box):
/Storage Card/Application Data/Call Surprise/
The above directory is absolutely correct. It does not like like this:
/Storage Card/Application Data/Call Surprise
And it does not look like this
/Storage Card /Application Data /Call Surprise/
What am I doing wrong!???????????????????????
And what the heck is the exclude these box? Is this where I put a list of unwanted sub directories?

search in folders box = try pointing to- \Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones
Put your ring tones you want to ring in there.
The exclude these box is if you have all of your mp3's in the specified folder and don't want Call surprise to play certain mp3's such as allert sounds - or some very soft music which you wouldn't hear as a ring tone. You would probably point to it like this in exclude box
\Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones\"name of mp3"

Hello, call surprise does not work at all! What the heck?
Can someone please tell me how to make it work. I thought it works on Xperia X1A?
when you open file explorer find where your normal ringtones are stored. Try pointing to that folder first to see if call surprise will randomize those rintones. Then find exactly where you have your other mp3's you want used as ringtones and point directly to that. Do not try excluding anything yet. Just point to these and test.

Files Lost, Help Me Please

Vogue on Winmo 6.1
I keep(kept) helpful files in a folder I call(ed) "Device Memos".
It contains passwords, setup info, application guides, manuals, and other things to help me manage my device. It is mostly .txt, .doc., .pdf. and some saved web pages (.html).
The other day I thought I'd leave a memo in an audible format. I used Resco Recorder which saved it in a folder called "audio recordings". I then went into the folder and copied the mp3(hold stylus down, copy). Then, I went to "device memos" and pasted it(stylus down, paste).
As soon as I pasted I was taken to the root folder in Resco Explorer. Very strange I thought. I returned to "device memos" and ALL of my folders/files were missing...it was empty.
I searched the device but couldn't find them.
I've tried several restore programs such as Recuva, Easeus, Duplicate File Detective, and others without success.
Strangely, with the SD Card inserted in a reader I can double-click and find files and folders with strange gibberish for text. Right clicking on the folder for properties displays 116 files, 112 folders, and 215 Gigabytes on a 16GB Sandisk!
Can anyone explain what has happened and help me restore this data ?
Sorry to say this but it sounds like your file has been corrupted since the check sum is obviously bad. Your only hope is to find something that can reconstruct your file, and I don't know of any.
Edit: Then again I'm no developer, so maybe there is another explanation.
It's clear that filesystem on SD card got corrupted somehow.
There are many paid and free filesystem recovery/fixing utilities available on internet, starting with Windows built-in chkdsk. You have to mount your SD card on Window to use these.
For best results make a raw dump of your SD card first (using dd for Windows or search for something user-friendlier) - after unsuccessful recovery attempt, you can restore original SD contents and try another utility without messup made by previous one.
