I've been following the forums for about a year, when I flashed an 8525, and now I have a tilt. Flashed to a new att rom, and just on Monday flashed to a wm6.1 rom. But there are a lot of rom's to choose from.
I propose that we create a sticky, with a listing of all the rom's, so that its easier on everyone, to find the data. No more need for flames, for folks that find the data and exchange a bit daunting.
In this sticky, I'd also propose that key attrtibutes of each rom, be used for comparison. Like, for example, whether OneNote is included, what programs are behind the HTC home, what colors are the primary interface (I personally dislike black, and love blue), what radio is suggested, and what additional software is included. Or what media player is the primary one. HTC's Audio manager sounds good, but... it plays disc's in Alphabetical order and not track order like WMP. I like track order best.
I'd also suggest that there be links to screenshots.
I just think it would have helped me make a better choice of rom's, or to really evaluate what my needs are, as opposed to the creator's needs.
To me its like car shopping.

There was a thread like this. It was created by a mod and it's in a sticky. Why does no one read it? Because it stopped being updated for one reason or another...
List of Kaiser Rom Threads and Download Links...First Page...Last Page ...First Unread Post
There is also a page on the wiki, which can be updated by anyone. If you're serious about your suggestions, how about making them. Remember to keep it unbiased. You can start here: Available Cooked ROM Versions
Perhaps your thread, sir, is redundant.
*wonders why nobody reads the threads any more...*

I totally agreed with you.
How many of these "I have a suggestion" type of threads are we going to have??? OMG! Maybe we should have a "I have a suggestion" sub-section!
LOL. _ALEX_ you famous. 2 posts and both quote you. LOL. I'm loving this. And people said I was just a mean person and I should learn to help. I see others are now starting to become fed up with all the BS that goes on lately.
TO the OP (original poster/in case you didn't know)
PLease read the sticky
Well I have read it...
and I didn't see a comparison chart of each release, and the relative merits of any of the software.
But that's ok, because in your eyes, I'm a noob, and therefore common respect, really isn't even offered, or even expected. Its just a way for you all to complain.
I've read the wiki, or I wouldn't have been able to flash the rom, or get a new radio. Or themes.
It was only a suggestion, one I never thought you'd go with, because then you can't have the tiered society. Us noobs, aren't people. In you world we are incapable of reading.
Could it be, that there is just too much info to reasonably digest, while we also hold down jobs, and live reasonable lives. Nope, that couldn't be it. Us noobs are just the whipping boys.
Got it. Loud and clear.

I didn't whip you at all in this thread. I just want to see less suggestions and more actual work. Have at the 'Available Cooked ROMs' page and OWN it.
I think everyone else is reading my recent bunch of posts and thinkng I'm just trashing everyone, when I'm not... I'm just being really honest in my posts and holding nothing back...
EDIT2: The quickest way for your suggestions to be put into place is to DO IT YOURSELF.
(edit3) It's the reason why I stopped asking if I should create a rollup sticky or update the wiki. Just like good old Bo Jackson, I followed the creedo of JUST DO IT. (Copyright Nike - please don't sue me...)

what about my post was whipping you? I even said please. Now to be honest, who is going to have the time to write up a visual chart of what has what and what doesn't ROM. I suggest, go to each individual Rom and write down "What I like" & "What I don't like" and go from there. Everything on here is provided for free. Alex didn't have to create a kitchen with tutorails for people to cook, but he took the initiative. The chef's didn't have to release their roms for everyone to use, criticize and tear apart but they took the initiative and did so.
Now, my suggestion is if you want something like you stated in your OP, why don't you take the initiative and create it instead of offering a suggestion and hoping someone else will create it for you. I'm sure some would appreciate it even.
<<steps down from soapbox now.

Actually, sir, what I said was this post was redundant because we already have a recent and active thread about this very subject. However, since you insist on having this conversation in the redundant thread rather than the actual thread I've already linked to...
The issue with your suggestion is "relative merits". This is going to vary widely depending on who you talk to. I hate GPS Tool and love GPSTest. I like HTC Home and threaded SMS. I can't stand the HTC Calculator but love 1Calc. Guess how many people disagree with my likes/dislikes... Yeah...most every has some different ones. So how, pray tell, are we to make you a chart with those merits?
As for the list of programs included, sorry but have you seen the first posts of the release threads? That chart would be 200 pages long to include all of that. I know it's a lot of information, but honestly the best way to do it is have a list of links to the ROMs and let you click on each and read just the first post or two by the chef. Then you can determine for yourself which one has features/apps you are interested in. By pure coincidence, I have an updated version of the Cooked ROMs wiki I'll be putting in place in a few hours that has the list of roms by OS version, then by Chef, then by date. That should make it a bit easier to navigate the information.
And to reiterate _Alex_'s statement...this is a forum and we have a wiki...if you see something is missing that would help...then work on it yourself. Let others know it's there and you'll probably even get help with getting it tweaked out and chocked full of info. This whole place is here because of community input. Offer something back.
It's not that you are a n00b that we get snippy. We all were/are (depending on how you look at it). At least not from my point of view. It's that while we're talking about how to deal with redundant threads...you make one. Others may have different reasons for acting the way they do towards you, but that is the entirety of my reasons for my actions.
I was thinking maybe after a rom has been up for a certain amount of time, maybe a basic review by a mod or admin on the site or anyone else for that matter after the the initial problems have been fixed with the rom.
Mainly to establish stability and functionality and to whom it would be suited for such as buisness people or gamers etc and have it as a sticky near the top of the thread?
Please dont shout at me if this is out of line its just when i start to look at a rom it gets a bit tedious looking through the hundreds of pages to find out the pros and cons.
Thanks for any input
Good Idea
You should check the WIKI and choose from all the cooked roms available
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=Kaiser_Cooked_ROMs
Every rom has good/bad things so... It'll sound rude but... try one by one!!!
If you need help choosing a ROM, by my experience, I can recommend Garmin's v1.0 and hang.tuah's RomeOS v4.1
They are stable, fast and a lot of memory available
Most of the chefs already do this. Generally speaking, they will update the 1st/2nd/3rd post of the thread with new version information or issues/fixes.
You should do the following:
Find a ROM that interests you, and read the first couple posts. If you are still intrigued, then read the rest of the thread.
Once a ROM is older than 1-2 months, it is pretty much dead and will not see any further updates from the chef. Something Dutty used to do that I liked was request his threads to be closed once a ROM reached a certain age and was no longer supported. He usually did this if a ROM was particularly buggy and a new version was released to correct the issues.

First thanks for the reply both of you,i understand that they tell you about issues and fixes, but just an over all description like this rom is very finger friendly a good rom for gamers because of the amount of memory left or more a stylus operated rom and buisness orientated rom.
I can sift through my self and understand a certain amount but for noobs evenmore so than myself it might prove helpful and save a couple of questions?
Any way i shall look at that link now.
Thanks people.

Im just trying the throttle rom at the moment im quite impressed a good port from the diamond, love the UI on the today screen although it can be sluggish in loading the selected app.
Not really installed much since flashing, its a bit annoying the messaging aspect of it i dont like the way it loads the message in the same way it would render a web page would rather it went straight to the message.
Love the new calender and the icontacts feature.
Any way it would seem i am writing my own review here so i shall stop now
Thanks for your input and help everyone
You may aswell kill this thread if you want.
I am not complaining about the multiple choices we have now when it comes to cooked, rooted ROMS for the G1. God, no! I love having the choice and can't thank either of the 3 main creators or everyone that's helped make these possible enough. However, even I who have been following the development am at a point where I really don't know which of the builds is right for me, because I can't find a centralized thread explaining the differences. I know differences change with every build released, but I feel going through one thread [kept as uncluttered and free of the "me too" or "can't wait" type comments as possible] would be useful.
I, for example, am still enjoying Hayrkuro's 5.0.2Hr5 build because I refuse to give up the HTC dialer (with T9 support) and I am not sure if any of the newer builds still have it. Do they?
And, again, if someone with enough knowledge of all 3 could provide a detailed comparison of features, that would be great. Keep in mind that, for most people that come here looking for advise, "based on the HTC or Google build" doesn't say much. They'd want to know what the HTC build has that the Google build doesn't, and viceversa.
One more time... To Haykuro, TheDudeOfLife and you, JesusFreke, who started it all, thank you for putting the community first!
They are all based on the 1.5 build from htc. I believe things like the htc keyboard can be pretty easily added to the 2 other builds. They seem to be sharing a lot of the same tweaks as well. I honestly would just go with the newest build by however releases it. Main difference? They come bundled with different apps. Anyone need to correct me on this?
I'm curious if anyone's done a side-by-side comparison of the 3 builds? I, too, am curious as to which one will suit my needs/desires.
Maybe it would be asking too much, but is there any sort of base-line for comparing these builds? I'm going with JF's for now, because it's been changed the least from the original (as far as I've read) but who knows?
It's very difficult to make an educated choice, when all I've read is something like "Awww, diz rom iz da only 1 wurth haven! da udder 1ez suxxorz!" (and yes, I've actually read a post like that one)
I truly enjoy the variety and choices available to us, but is there any real way to compare these builds?
test drive
im a firm believer in to each his own.. on that note the best advice is to test drive the builds for 2-3 days yourself to make that decision effectively im on the dudes .93 and i dont see any other builds being that much of a difference, but like i stated to each his own! everyone has a different liking.. so take the time and test drive the different bulids to give the dev's a fair chance at your personal opinion...
P.S. Dude's will be the only one w/ a default theme by MANUP456!!!. . . . hint-hint
Try all 3 of them and thats that. Everyone will have dif opinions, likes and dislikes. Its not gonna be that difficult to try all 3 of them if you have the time. If you do just make sure you wipe before switching from build to build. My opinion? I tried Haykuros G/ADP and JF, all pretty awesome, for now im sticking with JF. I do miss the transition from the G build though.
Ive been bouncing between all three myself today... We need a app that auto loads each rom of our choice...

Not really like the G build, i am using spare parts and it is nice, if i had a choice i would go with G's. BTW the fade in and out its not bad either, i really liked the shrink and expand from the G's, spare parts its more like shrink, swing then expand, after the swing i dont really like the transition. But im not complaining though, matter of taste i guess.
my understanding of all three builds is just as everyone has stated before...
- they are all builds off of ADP1.5, so as the operating system features go.. they are identical.
- and the apps and accompanying system tweaks are the basic differences between the builds
i like em all n wish there was a list to compare.. but really no build is "completely" done... so just gotta rotate them n find ur match
my main focus now is widgets n cupcake apps
stuck on Hr5 build cant give up the dialer and the pdf viewer loved how fast jf was though

The answer to all of em is.
Load them.
Test them.
Decide for yourself.
Thanks for your feedback, guys.
I'm still hoping someone will answer my question. Does any of these builds have the HTC dialer? If not, is there a way to replace the standard one after installing the ROM?

2nd that. I would love to be able to have multiple versions installed at once but don't know if it is possible from what I have read.
been lurking here for a while and own both a G1 and Magic on Att in the states. want to say thanks to everyone for all the hard work.
just wondering if there is or could be a thread that is just composed of links for Rom's. it would be a simple/dedicated way to see what is out, updated and works with your phone. no posts or comments, just author and their work.
with so many Rom's, Recovery's, Kernel's and updates, its hard to keep track of what works with 32A/32B and what is the latest out. I know the threads list what model they are for (32A/32B) but still some work with both and only list one.
if this exists, please let me know. thanks again.

If you come here often enough it should be pretty easy to spot what's new and what's not.
And it is pretty nice for most authors to include the date updated in the subject line now.
As a noob, I'd have to say something like this would be useful if anyone has the time to make it. I'm sure over the next couple of weeks I'll be familiar enough to have a clue about what's available here but it's very slow going sifting through pages upon pages of comments. I've also noticed every Hero ROM has someone saying "this is absolutely the fastest Hero ROM here, thanks!" It would be nice to read something more definite about which ROM really is considered the quickest, which has the fewest bugs, etc. I'm sure that might take a lot of work, though. Either way, many thanks to everyone here for developing these items and letting us play with them.

I think it'll be too much work to test it that way since you would need to wipe, flash, and test it for a substantial amount of time to find out how buggy/fast a rom is. And if multiple people do it, it will be hard to compare the results. The rom will probably be updated before the first test is even complete making the result somewhat pointless.

SLOW THE %&*$ DOWN!
Just Kidding... but in all seriousness, the variety of roms for the Cappy is amazing. It all comes down to preference; however, I must say that with all of the updates, and new roms, I'm flashing at least twice a day and sometimes even losing track of what I'm running. (Although I know I'm currently running Andromeda and it is by far the best I've had on my Cappy. Awesome GPS lock in seconds, fast, stable.)
The point is... can we consolidate, or come up with a legit thread/wiki that clarifies the pros, cons, features, and specifications on roms. Reading 20 pages of forum after a new ROM is released is getting tiring.

If you look at the feature sets, most of them are the same, just different skins, apps, etc included...
everything is pretty common knowledge since we are all running the same mods... additional apps, skins, etc are just fluff, which is why I personally don't include that kinda stuff. I will leave that to the theme and app section and the person running the rom to make it look how they want.
as far as all of us working together, I respond to all the devs who ask for help, I have joined up and help the team efforts, as well as individuals putting roms out that have asked how to do various things.
Putting it all into a wiki? No thanks, that stuff changes to much to want to deal with updating a wiki with 20 different variations on how to do a smali edit for X feature.
If you take donations, in a community based team, this always becomes a stress point, best not to take donations at that point. I won't accept a cut of team donations, someone will ***** about it if they get less or more, not worth it. (just noticed adam sent me a donation, KNOCK THAT OFF! lol)

I feel the same. So many roms are including everything everyone else is. Just skinning and a few differences. I stick to a select few toms and just go frombthere because there is just too much to keep track of right now.
DG you are an idol of a great developer.
It would be great if more.devastating would get together to lighten the load and make it a little easier on all involved, but then again I am excited to.see so.many great revs making a rom all their own.

I think its just crazy that this thread even got other post
I would have thought it was over with mine. But oh well. I have been in the shadows adam
Im always here. Or kinda.... haha
i think a wiki would be convenient in some ways but more trouble than its worth. I mean who would wanna volunteer to keep up with every single rom, and update it daily?
It might help a lil with noobs trying to learn, but honestly reading through 100s of pages in one thread usually ends up helping you learn more than just the rom itself. When i first registered on this forum all i did was read for the first few months before even making a post
Guess I will jump on the bandwagon before this gets moved to the general section.
There was a point in time not so long ago where there were only about 3 ROMs for the captivate and a lot of drooling over what the other SGS variants had going on.
I for one am very happy to see the Captivate community grow and put out some good stuff. The variety and choices really help enable the end-user to get their phone to look and work how they want, end-user empowerment tends to make people happy.
Taco Bell has maybe a dozen individual ingredients but it's the way they are combined that makes each product special.
As for having to read the threads of each ROM, yea it can be a pain, but it is good for you. You are informed, can make the best choice, and know what to expect from what you are about to put on your phone.

(just noticed adam sent me a donation, KNOCK THAT OFF! lol)
As far as you not liking to flash a lot, get help, you are a flash addict
I wont be slowing down anytime soon, get used to it

The note you made about the themes and such is exactly why I love Andromeda. I personally do not like the 2.0 theme, but the fact that there is an unthemed version as well as a themed version makes me the happiest panda in the world, and I think more ROM cookers should adopt this policy.
What I'd love more than anything else though, is a ROM that supports the hardware voice processing of the Captivate, as well as any custom kernels/modems the user wants. That would be the ultimate ROM in my opinion. Oh, and the 4 lockscreen mod is a must as well. I do not like the glass lockscreen

FYI-
Captivate Wiki:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SGH-I897
Looks like it is not too far out of date.
People complain too much....
I understand your post OP but as mentioned it won't work. What get's the me the most is when people ask, "what's changed?"...
There are CHANGE LOGS ON EVERY THREAD FOR EVERY ROM.

maybe i interpreted the OP wrong, but it sounds like hes talking about a wiki with more detail than the one we already have

Taco Bell.. I'm hungry.
It really cracks me up that this thread is still going
Every ROM is made for a handfull of people. AS it seems. So to really make a wiki and save all the Info from a few thousand users is just nutz. even to have a WiKi just for the ROMs is kinda nutz as others have said. Just so much changes daily it would be so hard to keep up with
So i guess....Like all the others. We can let this thread die now
I agree with you Smoke. With the way updates come out sometimes daily for fixes or depending on an issues hourly a Wiki would just be too hard to maintain. If some one is up for it then go for it. I just see it as a way for people not to have to read the roms thread and doing research before they flash a rom to their $500 device.
