Problem! Unpacking .CAB Files - General Topics

I was just updating my I-mate SP5m with some new programs....
I tried to unpacking a WMP skin. It asked me to choose a program to open the .CAB file, so I chose Window's Media Player (my stupidity)
Now I can't open .CAB Files. It automatically try’s to open ALL .CAB FILES WITH WINDOWS MEDIA PLAYER...
How do I fix this problem?
PLEASE HELP ME
(sorry I posted in the Tornado forums, but I hope to get faster help here)

I'm going to assume that you're talking about Windows XP. Just open up your Edit menu and take a peek in Folder options. There ought to be something in there about file associations. I'd be more specific, but it's been eons since I've tinkered around with Windows.

No its on a Smartphone... It should automaticly un-compress it self and install, but all it does is opens windows media player. This is for any .CAB file at the moment
PLEASE HELP!

i suspect a hard reset would do it but if you want to avoid that..
found this page which discusses the subject but seems to be based on pocket pc, if you have a registry editor it might be worth checking out the keys they mention in case they are there on your phone. also like they say resco explorer can change the association.

I'll keep looking and post if i find an easy way of fixing this.

UPDATE - TCPMP for WM6.1 Sleuth & other 3.02 & 3.03 Versions 02/13/08

Revised 02/13/08
This is for anyone with TCPMP and/or Flash Video Problems using a 3.02 or 3.03 based WM6.1 ROM.
If I get a chance this weekend I will flash a 3.08 Version & see what I can find.
Ok, this time it's been tested by several others!!!! I have gotten it working for 8 out of 10 people & number 9 has TCPMP working, but not the flv yet. 8-1/2 out of nine ain't bad! Works 100% for Sleuth's V3.0!!!
This is working 100% for SLEUTH users!!!!! This is the instructions & files to get back your TCPMP & YOUTUBE & All the other .flv sites you used to have.
Not a sleuth user??? Give it a try! Has work for others with the new instructions!!!
This file includes detailed instructions & all the files you need!
This pack contains the lates TCPMP + FlashVideoBundle + the latest AAC & AC3 Codec plugins.
This has been confirmed working by others in Sleuths forum, but you must follow the instructions implicitly. You will need Resco or another high end File Explorer for this fix because you need to be able to select the "Always use this for this file type" check box as supported in resco.
Here is a RS premium Folder containing everything DL: http://rapidshare.com/users/NM7XYV
Here is a standard RS Mirror: http://rapidshare.com/files/91614567/TCPMP___FLV.rar
Mirror: http://www.sendspace.com/file/pl5h41
If you have questions about installation PM me. I can also help you via MSN Messenger if you have problems.
Nice work. I will test it out and see if I can get it to work. Will report back and let you know how it goes.
thank you so much. I am downloading as we speak
maybe someone can creat a cab for this.....
wow! nice work!
dumb question, but I cannot view my windows file on my phone with wm6.1
so..... how do i do this. I know it has been covered so sorry for the lazyness
Thanks, I finally have the incentive to go to WM 6.1!

thank you mate

Great work GSLEON3.... Thanks for your efforts.
I am sure one of the nice talented cooks here would volunteer time to make a cab for most if not all of the commands here.
Guys, by mistake I duplicated some of the FlashVideo files. Won't make any difference, but it will take a little space from your SD card. As soon as I get a second, I'll post the ones safe to delete. (For noob's)
I'm sure most of you already figured this out.
I must doing something wrong.
Here is what it looks like.
/Storage Card/Program Files/TCPMP Media Player 0.81RC1Beta/
Under that folder I have.
/TCPMP
and
/Player
I copied to my /windows/start menu/program folder
player.exe
videosites.htm
videosites-clean.htm.
Sorry if I sound stupid but maybe I just don't understand what I am doing wrong. Site comes up fine but when I click on the video it doesn't work.
It loads the video on the webpage but it doesn't launch TCPMP
i also tried cooking it in and using it the way it is neither way worked both still yielded the crash.txt error
If you extract to you computer you should get The TCPMP beta file that contains the player file. This goes in \SD Card\Programs or whatever.
Then if you extract the FVB file you should get another file called TCPMP. This also goes in \SD Card\Programs. IT DOES NOT GO IN THE OTHER TCPMP FILE. They are seperate folders, seperate programs, so they get their own file in SD Card\Programs.
You make a shortcut to player.exe for your start menu. Now, if you extracted them on desktop & then moved the files over to PPC then inside the FVB file named TCPMP, you should have other folder. One called VIDEOSITE CLEAN. You make a shortcut to the cleansites .htm in the cleansites folder & again place the shortcut in your sart menu. If you unzip instead of extracting first you just get a jumble of file from each. That's why extract first; that way the folder structure stays intact.
As soon as I get my GD big USA *&%&#@ TomTom map I'll post my file structure if you still need it, but CE2's got me tied up at the moment.
Does TCPMP run by itself??? It's working great for me on Sleuth's 6.1
Is it just the FVB that's not working? Let me know so I can fix it!

no tcpmp doesnt run by itself and the fvb doesnt present itself as usual in videosites when clicking on a video no popup menu is displayed, and when u try to run tcpmp player it crashes as usual with same error as initially reported

File Explorer Problem - Too Slow

Hi all,
When I use File Explorer to open the Windows folder in my Touch Cruise, it took very, very friggin' long time to load all the files. Is this normal and is there anyway to solve this?
I need to open the Windows folder so I can put themes file .tsk in it. My PC's Vista's Autosync can not access this folder on desktop.
Pls help.
Thanks.
try total commander, it's much faster
For me too windows folder very slow,
in default explorer and in resco explorer same slowness
But i think its ok cause windows folder have about 4000 files and now manila2d adds about 450 files so it takes time for explorer to read them all and to show all files info
*in resco explorer there is option "send to" for any file so i configure "send to windows" and i click any file and can send to windows folder without opening it, and resco can even overwrite read only and rom files - its my solution for this problem, before i found resco i preferred to not accessing windows folder at all....
and themes can be stored in my documents folder or sd card its not important where to put .tsk themes

But if theme files stored in My Documents or SD card, they won't be listed in Settings/Today/Themes. Only if they reside in Windows folder they will appear there. Pls confirm if I miss anything.
I may be wrong, but try clearing out the errors and duplicates in your notifications queue. Doing so helped my file explorer speed a gread deal when browsing the windows folder. It went from something along probably 30seconds or so to 7 seconds.
Hi,
I'm suffering from the same problem. Listing the Windows directory takes about 40s. It used to take about 4s before instalation of Manila 2D. I've uninstalled Manila but the problem persists. I haven't noticed any left file nor missing free space on the flash or functionality, everything seems to be back as before but the Windows directory still takes about 40s to list and therefore the whole system is slowed down.
Could you please specify how to clear notification queue?
Or any other idea what can be wrong?
Could this be a filesystem problem? As I noticed the same behaviour with any application which installs to the Windows directory, the only difference is the amount of seconds which it adds
Thank You.
EDIT: I've already cleared notification queue but it didn't helped at all. Still looking for a solution.

Hi, having some problems with my Touch Pro

Please bear with me, as this is my first windows mobile phone and I'm not all too familiar with it.
First problem is, tapping "Launch Browser" on the Internet tab does not work. After thinking about it for a while, I realized that the Opera browser was not installed on my device! Now, as far as I know, it should come already in all devices. So, I downloaded the Opera 9.5 browser off their website. How can I set it up so when I tap "Launch Browser" on the Internet tab, Opera 9.5 will automatically run? Currently tapping it still does nothing.
Second is, I've been hearing about this "Windows" folder in the HTC Touch Pro. I can't seem to locate this. When I browse for it with my computer, the name of the TP's "hard drive" is "\", and then I see the following folders:
Application Data, ConnMgr, Content, Documents and Settings, Music, My Documents, Program Files, cemail (hidden file), pim
Is this root folder the "Windows" folder?
Third thing is, in the "Programs" tab in TF3D, there's this icon there that when I press (looks like the default icon for a folder in Vista), it gives me an error. It says "The file 'wt5jetpr' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring this file."
There we go, that's all. Thank you, if you've read this far.
I can't help with the Opera thing but as for your Windows folder, it's a system file and hidden. You will have to unhide it in your Vista/XP operating system before you can see it using your PC>
You see, I already enabled the viewing of hidden folders. There aren't any other items other than the ones I listed.
EDIT: I tried creating a folder called "Windows" and Vista tells me I can't, because a folder of the same name already exists.
That's weird.. hidden folders are already enabled and I still can't see it.
Hiya, i'm a bit of a noob myselft with regards to wm6.1 so for the opera issue i dont think i could be much help with that same with the file that wont delete so i hope someone else will answer that, to see ur windows folder though when the phone is connected to the pc open up explorer on ur pc and click on tools/folder options then click on view and make sure either the "hide protected operating system files" box is unchecked &/or the "show hidden system files box is checked and this should let you see the windows folder.
Hope this helps.
EDIT: looks like someone already answered in the time it took me to type that, my own fault for multitasking ...

Same thing as you, when I browse to the device from Windows Explorer.
However, if I go to Tools - Folder Options - View tab and I select "Show hidden files and folders", the Windows directory is displayed.

By the name, it looks like it is JetCet Print 5.
Strange you have these errors. Do you use a custom ROM?
PS: been too slow to answer too. but at least the answers match ;-)
I'm not using a custom rom =\. The rom came with my device.
It's:
1.90.405.1.WWE
It's a HTC Touch Pro T7272
Then I advise you to do a Hard Reset. Opera and JetCet print should be there, and should not give you any certificate errors.
I advise you to read a lot these forums, gather as much info as you can, and experimenting with your device. You have a powerhouse in your hands, you know? you have unlimited possibilities. Any questions should you have must be asked.
Alright, I'll give that a try tomorrow after the day's gone so I have lots of time to figure things out.
Sorry for the double post, but I figure this message won't get read if I simply edit my last post.
Anyways, I hard resetted the device and I got Opera and that printing program working! Thanks creiz.
Just one last thing I'm trying to figure out.. is there any way I can get a custom alarm ring tone without downloading a program? (I'm trying to avoid having to do that if possible)

Slow Vista file transfer to //Windows on device.

Hi everybody,
I am, as most of you know a skinner here on the forum.
So first of all i little explanation:
All dialers that I know of install all of their images in the /Windows directory on your mobile device. So when I skin a dialer I have to copy my files to that directory over and over.
In windows XP, the browser only had to load the file list from /Windows once and when it was done doing so, it blasted all images to the /Windows folder.
So I had to wait half a minute and then I just copied over all files, great!
Now I use Vista and it has to load then complete new file list for every file it want's to copy to the /Windows directory. With my previous dialers, I was ok with that. (+/- 20-30 images) But with the new Opal and Diamond dialer it has gotten a lot more. (total of ~350 images) That means I have to wait 350*30= 10500 seconds -> almost three hours for all files to be copied! And that is just demoralising!
So any suggestions on making this work faster are much appreciated!
I've tried to use Total Commander but it does not recognise my pocket pc and nor does FastCopy.
Thanks in advance (even for reading the enitre story )
Well, for me I had to connect my phone to my PC using the USB Mass Storage option instead of Activesync to increase the copying speed. I am using a Touch Pro.
That will prevent me from seeing the windows directory :/
Only sd card is visible then.

Your device has to refresh after every file copy, or Vista has to refresh the file list? What vista file browser are you using? Are you using Windows Mobile Device Center?
I have Vista Business x64 and I'm not having any problems copying to and from the \Windows dir. I will help you as much as possible.
It's not copying from the device but to the device that takes a very long time.
I'm using the standard file browser from vista and Ultimate x86 with WMDC.
My laptop (Windows Vista Home Basic) takes ages when copying files from my laptop to the /Windows directory on my device too. When I try to copy files for a Manilla2D theme for example, it takes about 5 hours.
In Vista make sure that you have "show hidden files and folder" deselected in Folder Options. Also, try disabling the "Show system files" option as well. This should minimize the number of files that explorer will try to display when refreshing, thus a speed increase.
I'll try to look into this more, as I just copied all the opal phone canvas files to \windows from my vista machine. It only took ~2 minutes to copy all the files.

Hmmm. Do you have your device configured with Mobile Device Center (setup to sync)? I ask because I don't sync anything with it. I simply use it to connect to the phone. Maybe this has something to do with it.
I'll also check the speed settings in Device Manager. Maybe there is something to adjust there.
One option I use is to pull the card and use a USB card reader to drag the files over. Lightening fast. The other is the USB connection option on some of the newer ROMS i.e. DCDs, Scrosslers (DCD variant). Has very fast directoru refresh and copy.

Vista has it own problems. Maybe do a double boot and start XP when you need to . . .
From an IT standpoint this is why many companies and people are not using Vista . . .
I know it is not the solution fo choice but it would work . . . .

if it's in a cab format than copy the cab to your device and install the cab from your device.
Send it over to your device from your commputer either throubh activesinc (when connected) or WIFI for those who have it, or Bluetooth.
Over Activesinc - Just connect device to computer (Assuming activesinc already installed and set up - if not then do so) then go to my computer, find mobile device and explore it as you would any drive. Then you can just find where you want to place the cab for installation on your device - I create a folder called install - and copy and paste it to the folder- once the cab is on your device - just tap on it to start installing it.
I have noticed that through WIFI, I can just go to view the shared folder on my desktop with my device over the network, click on the cab and it installs on the device even though the cab is not on the device but only on the desktop.
Thank you for the information. I cannot find cab. What does cab mean? This is my first all microsoft phone with vista laptop. I just don't understand the terms.
If I extract a cab file, what have I just done? Where is it at at that point? I know that eventually I want it on my phone. What is the next step toward delivery on the phone? When I check the windows mobile device center there is nothing there to import? to phone. Is there a missing step somewhere between the cabinet file extact and the windows mobile device center? I'm trying to think this through.
Don't extract it, just copy. You are "exporting" not importing.
Go here for how to install a cab
Exactly = Don't do anything with the cab except for transfer it to your device. On your desktop a cab looks like a zip file or a rar file. You might be tempted to unpack it but don't - All you will see is a bunch of stuff that doesn't make sense- Just send it to your device and then tap on it or click it to start installation. Most apps are in cab form; however, some are in exe form and must be installed to your device via your computer through activesinc. Just check the extension - it will either be .cab or .exe
I think I might have sent it to my phone, there were 6 files and when I attempted to send to my phone it said send to phone documents. Where is the phones documents at? I am looking in programs and settings on my phone and I don't see the documents. How can I know where I or if I sent it? Man, I can't believe I've worked all day on this.
stop thread please. I give up. Thank you all who really tried to help me.
Ronald Quint -Documents is in the first tier of folders - Just open file explorer and if you need to click the up soft key (bottom left of screen) then scroll until you see documents - There is also storage card documents if you search through your storage card. I created a special folder just for sending files over, and then move them around afterwards. I created a folder called "install" and send my cabs there. Then I just have to navigate (using file explorer) to the install folder and there is everything I just sent over - Music I send to my music folder however, and movies to my movies folder - to save time. It sounds like you unpacked the cab and sent the files to your device. What you can do is
1. using your computer - open the cab to see what is inside
2. using your device - use search to find each individual file which was sent to your device. (you will find them all in the same place)
then start deleting them
(you could just forget it and leave them be (it shouldn't cause any harm) and just resend the cab to your device (pay attention to where you are sending it. - use file explorer to navigate to where you sent the cab and then click it to install.. Once installed - you can delete the cab from your device.
