Are there compression tools like ZIP or RAR for smartphones? I have an S710 and it comes with the WM6, however it is obviously the stripped down version of the WM6 or PDA version. I am having some difficulty tweaking my new phone cause most packages come compressed.... help wanted?
Resco Explorer 2007 or LCG X-plore, both have support for both .zip & .rar
Resco Explorer: http://resco.net/smartphone/explorer/default.asp
X-plore: http://www.lonelycatgames.com/?app=xplore
I suggest the free Total Commander www.ghisler.com - also has FTP Client
For RAR there is an unpacker, available for example here: http://handheld.softpedia.com/get/System-Utilities/Archive/UnRAR-SP-12098.shtml
Resco is the best overall explorer in my opinon - EXTREMELY feature rich. Has an FTP add-on too.

What tool are you usng to edit the registry of windows mobile 5 based smartphones (especially MDA Pro) ?
I'm using total commander - a freeware tool
It works very well on my HTC wizard (o2 xda mini S),
in addition to a free registry editor you get a free file manager that's more capeable than the build MS explorer
http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm
just my 2 cents
are you sure total commander has a registry editor ? I cant find it anywhere in the menu
Having the same trouble as ‘BitBonk’
Can’t work out how to find the ‘RegEdit’ bit on TotalCommander !

click on plugins in total commander

It's a pleasure
There are several reged tools for the PPC. Please read the Registry Editor Bible ( http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/menneisyys/UltimateRoundupOfRegistryEditors.asp ) for more info.
Hi, just wanted to share my experience with getting the ClearVue applications installed on the storage card of a Qtek 8310. Installing to device memory wastes a lot of precious storage memory, and installing to \Storage Card does not seem to work, because the installer just dumps everything into \Storage Card\Windows, including the Start Menu shortcuts (which will not be visible, and they point to \Windows anyway).
Anyway, do a normal install, choose Storage Card, and then you have to create shortcuts using File Explorer (either on the device or through ActiveSync):
\Windows\Start Menu\ClearVue Document -> \Storage Card\Windows\WTCVDocV.exe
\Windows\Start Menu\ClearVue PDF -> \Storage Card\Windows\WTCVPDFV.exe
\Windows\Start Menu\ClearVue PPT -> \Storage Card\Windows\WTCVPres.exe
\Windows\Start Menu\ClearVue Worksheet -> \Storage Card\Windows\WTCVWSV.exe
The default document handler for .pdf is the same as for .doc, so if you want to be able to view both .doc/.rtf and .pdf files you have to edit the registry:
\HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.pdf\Default should be changed from docfile to pdffile
You also have to add the file associations for the file types using File Explorer on the device (Menu->File->Associate). Create dummy files with the following extensions (or copy real files) and associate them as follows:
.doc and .rtf -> WTCVDocV.exe
.pdf -> WTCVPDFV.exe
.ppt -> WTCVPres.exe
.xls -> WTCVWSV.exe
Now you should be able to view word/excel/powerpoint/pdf attachments and files without wasting a lot of storage memory.

clearvue for wm 5?
You article is very nice, but my problem is that it does even works on my Imate SP5, because it has wm 5. Also Westtek told me, that they are working for a new version (within this year) compatible with WM 5.
So 2 questions:
- does it works on WM 5? (or are you talking not about Westtek ClearVue Suite?)
- exist there any Word/.pdf/tif viewer for Smartphone with WM 5.0?
Yes, qtek 8310 is a wm5 device, it's exactly the same as imate sp5, and ClearVue was included on the qtek software cd.
So, it seems like the installer is broken with wm5, but you should get it up and running using the steps in my previous post.

resco explorer supports any connection type... or better... it doesn't matter which connection you use, resco explorer doesn't have it's own dial up method. so if you are connected (gprs / umts / whatever) you can connect to any ftp. i had the same problem and decided to use resco explorer + ftp addon.
