thought I'd give a little something back to the community. I made a black skin for dialer + windows media player in photoshop... (ps, you may not like my Honda background for mediaplayer)
To Install:
Unpack these files to your storage card. (you MAY remove any files you do not wish to use)
Insert card into phone.
Use Total Commander or similar program to paste these files in your \windows folder.
When asked to Replace Files, click yes.
Soft reboot, and your done...
(You might want to back up your original files just in case you change your mind later...)
PS. I am trying to find out where the start, menu's, etc images files are stored, so I may edit them as well...
nevermind, i found the other windows files...
Off to make a more complete skin. Ill keep you updated...

Hi everybody,
I am, as most of you know a skinner here on the forum.
So first of all i little explanation:
All dialers that I know of install all of their images in the /Windows directory on your mobile device. So when I skin a dialer I have to copy my files to that directory over and over.
In windows XP, the browser only had to load the file list from /Windows once and when it was done doing so, it blasted all images to the /Windows folder.
So I had to wait half a minute and then I just copied over all files, great!
Now I use Vista and it has to load then complete new file list for every file it want's to copy to the /Windows directory. With my previous dialers, I was ok with that. (+/- 20-30 images) But with the new Opal and Diamond dialer it has gotten a lot more. (total of ~350 images) That means I have to wait 350*30= 10500 seconds -> almost three hours for all files to be copied! And that is just demoralising!
So any suggestions on making this work faster are much appreciated!
I've tried to use Total Commander but it does not recognise my pocket pc and nor does FastCopy.
Thanks in advance (even for reading the enitre story )
Well, for me I had to connect my phone to my PC using the USB Mass Storage option instead of Activesync to increase the copying speed. I am using a Touch Pro.
That will prevent me from seeing the windows directory :/
Only sd card is visible then.

Your device has to refresh after every file copy, or Vista has to refresh the file list? What vista file browser are you using? Are you using Windows Mobile Device Center?
I have Vista Business x64 and I'm not having any problems copying to and from the \Windows dir. I will help you as much as possible.
It's not copying from the device but to the device that takes a very long time.
I'm using the standard file browser from vista and Ultimate x86 with WMDC.
My laptop (Windows Vista Home Basic) takes ages when copying files from my laptop to the /Windows directory on my device too. When I try to copy files for a Manilla2D theme for example, it takes about 5 hours.
In Vista make sure that you have "show hidden files and folder" deselected in Folder Options. Also, try disabling the "Show system files" option as well. This should minimize the number of files that explorer will try to display when refreshing, thus a speed increase.
I'll try to look into this more, as I just copied all the opal phone canvas files to \windows from my vista machine. It only took ~2 minutes to copy all the files.

But when I do this, I can't access the /Windows directory because its a system file?

Hmmm. Do you have your device configured with Mobile Device Center (setup to sync)? I ask because I don't sync anything with it. I simply use it to connect to the phone. Maybe this has something to do with it.
I'll also check the speed settings in Device Manager. Maybe there is something to adjust there.
One option I use is to pull the card and use a USB card reader to drag the files over. Lightening fast. The other is the USB connection option on some of the newer ROMS i.e. DCDs, Scrosslers (DCD variant). Has very fast directoru refresh and copy.

Vista has it own problems. Maybe do a double boot and start XP when you need to . . .
From an IT standpoint this is why many companies and people are not using Vista . . .
I know it is not the solution fo choice but it would work . . . .
I have bought a htc tilt and I am wanting to dress up the today screen. I saw the retro clock and I downloaded it to my laptop, but I cannot seem to push it through to my cell phone. Any help would be appreciated, please.

if it's in a cab format than copy the cab to your device and install the cab from your device.
Send it over to your device from your commputer either throubh activesinc (when connected) or WIFI for those who have it, or Bluetooth.
Over Activesinc - Just connect device to computer (Assuming activesinc already installed and set up - if not then do so) then go to my computer, find mobile device and explore it as you would any drive. Then you can just find where you want to place the cab for installation on your device - I create a folder called install - and copy and paste it to the folder- once the cab is on your device - just tap on it to start installing it.
I have noticed that through WIFI, I can just go to view the shared folder on my desktop with my device over the network, click on the cab and it installs on the device even though the cab is not on the device but only on the desktop.
Thank you for the information. I cannot find cab. What does cab mean? This is my first all microsoft phone with vista laptop. I just don't understand the terms.
If I extract a cab file, what have I just done? Where is it at at that point? I know that eventually I want it on my phone. What is the next step toward delivery on the phone? When I check the windows mobile device center there is nothing there to import? to phone. Is there a missing step somewhere between the cabinet file extact and the windows mobile device center? I'm trying to think this through.
Don't extract it, just copy. You are "exporting" not importing.
Go here for how to install a cab
Exactly = Don't do anything with the cab except for transfer it to your device. On your desktop a cab looks like a zip file or a rar file. You might be tempted to unpack it but don't - All you will see is a bunch of stuff that doesn't make sense- Just send it to your device and then tap on it or click it to start installation. Most apps are in cab form; however, some are in exe form and must be installed to your device via your computer through activesinc. Just check the extension - it will either be .cab or .exe
I think I might have sent it to my phone, there were 6 files and when I attempted to send to my phone it said send to phone documents. Where is the phones documents at? I am looking in programs and settings on my phone and I don't see the documents. How can I know where I or if I sent it? Man, I can't believe I've worked all day on this.
stop thread please. I give up. Thank you all who really tried to help me.
Ronald Quint -Documents is in the first tier of folders - Just open file explorer and if you need to click the up soft key (bottom left of screen) then scroll until you see documents - There is also storage card documents if you search through your storage card. I created a special folder just for sending files over, and then move them around afterwards. I created a folder called "install" and send my cabs there. Then I just have to navigate (using file explorer) to the install folder and there is everything I just sent over - Music I send to my music folder however, and movies to my movies folder - to save time. It sounds like you unpacked the cab and sent the files to your device. What you can do is
1. using your computer - open the cab to see what is inside
2. using your device - use search to find each individual file which was sent to your device. (you will find them all in the same place)
then start deleting them
(you could just forget it and leave them be (it shouldn't cause any harm) and just resend the cab to your device (pay attention to where you are sending it. - use file explorer to navigate to where you sent the cab and then click it to install.. Once installed - you can delete the cab from your device.
Ok, So with more hours spent trawling the site with a little help, I figured out which files I need to change to have different colours for switches on the comm manager but, how the *!$&@@@@**%$£"" do you change file marked as;
Read only
System
ROM
Winmo file explorer cannot do it
Total commander cannot do it
Resco changes the name, win mo chucks a **** fit and then changes the name back to stock
Windows explorer cannot do via active sync
So, how do I rename the original (so I can revert back should I need to) and copy the modified?
Beer tokens at the ready!
Thanks for reading
(PS, I know this has been covered a number of times, but I think I've covered the solutions provided so far in the above)
Checked out how to make a cab file, made it, installed it, sorted.
I'm using the Diamond kitchen HERE. I am really struggling to organise my start menu.
I've been able to create folders using the initflashes.dat and mxipinit_startmenu_001.provxml.
But Windows installs default icons that I have been unable to remove. Where do I remove the icons such as Calendat, Tasks, Messaging etc...? I want to remove them from the start menu root, into my new created folders.
Any help would be very much appreciated!
You need to take a multi-pronged attack to control the 6.5 start menu, lol. There are many different ways to do it.
First, the icons. One approach is to search on the sys folder for "icon." Can't remember the names (icon_games.png, or something like that). There is one big-ass folder with all the icons. Just delete the ones you don't like or need. Or, create your own icon, rename it the way it's named in sys, and stick it in a package that runs later. Then you'll never have to think about it again, as long as you keep the package.
As far as folders go, I've dug out all the provxml's that create start menu shortcuts and I've deleted all of the program shortcuts (I left the settings stuff alone). I don't remember what all the provxmls are named, but you can usually tell just looking at the title. I recommend either organizing the dump file in your kitchen by extension, and then copying all the .provxmls out and examining them (some are hidden). So, if you make changes to any of them, then you should again stick them in the package with your icons that runs at the end of the cooking process. Personally, I install my entire start menu by cab file during customization, and that's where my directory is created. I've editted out everything in the initiflashfiles.dat and app.dat files. I'm not recommending that you take this approach, but this is what I do, lol.
The last thing you need to do is to cook in your HKLM\Security\Shell\Startinfo reg setting. This has all of the folder icon settings (if you use the .png icons-personally, I don't). It also orders everything the way you like it. I've also found that I never have problems with the owner info and buttons settings not showing up with this cooked in. When you look at that reg directory, you'll probably see a lot of crap in there that isn't in your start menu (or in the wrong place). Just delete those entries.
Getting that menu set up is a pain, but once you have it done, it's not so bad.
Edit: you can also run a mortscript during customization to clean and re-organize the SM. I've done that, but there's just something unappealing about moving stuff around and deleting stuff. You usually end up with a messy startinfo registry (mine's clean as a whistle now, lol). But it does work. You can also write scripts to delete the 'icon' values in the registry to use icon.lnk files to set your folder icons. It pretty much comes down to what's convenient and what you're familiar with.
I accidentally erased a name of a file using total commander and can't undo myself.
My files show:
//Plugins
Application Data
ConnMgr
Content
Documents and Settings
Music
My Documents
Programs
Storage Card
Temp
Windows
and "wrong name because I deleted it" (in the folder is Manilla_20100401....)
Can someone please let me know what that file name should be? Most of my programs won't fully launch now because of it.
Thank you for your help.
Michael
Just hard reset your phone. That's always an easy fix that's sure to work
I just had this phone replaced due to warranty and had finished reinstalling lots of items but stupidly hadn't made a backup. I was in fact only opening total commander to make certain it was working when I accidentally deleted the file name. I would hate to hard reset when it is just a single file name that needs replaced .... I hope.
Do you have SK Tools? If so, this is a piece of cake. Open the database tool and export Replstor as an .xml. Open it with notepad on your PC and find the name of the file or folder (and its contents) in the list. There could be a few thousand entries, so it may take a while.
Farmer Ted--I don't find any of my file names from my device in this document. Thank you for the suggestion but I am still at a loss for the original names of the folders under My Device.
If only I knew someone with an HTC Fuze, I could just look on their panel under My Device. Unfortunately, most of my folk are Iphone zealots. Their advice usually involves a different purchase!
Michael
Well, I realized after I posted that if you somehow deleted one of the databases, then it won't show up in replstor, because they're all excluded from replstor. Most of them can't be deleted, though. You should have mxip_initdb.vol, mxip_lang.vol, mxip_notify.vol, mxip_swmgmt.vol and mxip_system.vol. If you're missing one of them, then look in the\windows folder and find the rom version and copy it to the root of the device. It may not have everything it needs in it, though. Just post up if you're missing one, and I can probably tell you how to fix it (well, maybe, lol).
Thanks FarmerTed, I'll give it a go as soon as I understand what it means! Just to clarify, I didn't delete any files. I renamed it. Not on purpose. These are just the basic files under My Device.
I've renamed stuff before, too. The best thing to do if you catch yourself is to delete the entire name, then highlight another file. The messed up file will go back to the original name.
shoot. doesn't work. It would have if I would've done that in the first place though, so that is good to know.
