(This was posted in the Titan forum, but since I beleive it is not device specific, I'm re-posting it here... )
I love using a2dp in my car stereo... sound quality is great, and I love carrying my tunes wirelessly from my WM6 PPC (HTC Titan) to the car speakers (Sony BT25000 stereo head unit installed in car).
Only problem is that I try to keep the screen off to save battery power, but everytime I press a command on my stereo (pause, next, previous, etc...), it wakes up the phone and I need to screen toggle it off again each time!
This is very annoying, so I was wondering if anyone had any experience with this problem, and is there a workaround?
I was thinking of writing some sort of MortScript to constantly check if the screen is on, and if so apply a screen toggle command, but it seems like this may create the problem of an infinity loop when I DO want to use it (turn on device, mortscript turns off screen off right away, repeat). Any suggestions?
Thanks!

I have noticed that when I use Core Player, the screen wakes up for a split second when a command is received and then does back to sleep. Of course, you would have to go through the menu of core player to activate the 'screen off' feature. This was tested on a X7501 running WM6.

Hi all, Thanks for all the ROM's, I have tried many on my xda2, wizard and universal over the last couple of years.
Anyway, i have a problem someone may be able to help me with. When i use any WM6 rom i find that when i have setup my activesync to connect to my work email with direct push an i am forced to hav a security pin, when i use the power button to turn off (or if my screen turns off after inactivity) when i switch back on using the power button i am returned to the home screen automatically and any active application is closed.
This happens with the touchflo cube, pointui, media player, slidelock....anything. It is realy frustrating as i need to relaunch the program again....annoying if playing music and completley defeating the benefits of the cube and pointui.
I have tested this without the security pin on a fresh rom and everything works fine, switch off and back on and i get the same screen. connect to work and set the pin and its back to the home screen every time.
I went back to using WM5 which is fine but I lost the ability to have stereo bluetooth a2dp. I can get it working but only in mono through both earpieces.
I also cannot disable the security pin as I need my email from work and I am forced to have it via a policy.
Does anyone know of a solution to either the WM6 problem with the homescreen or if you can get proper stereo from a WM5 rom on the Wizard.
Please don't make me have to go back to my Blackberry.
Many thanks to all of you out there for allowing me to get the best out of my old kit. It realy is great that I can change the look and feel at will and it feels like i get a new phone every time I try a new ROM.
There is a way to prevent your device locking even if there is an Exchange policy requiring that it lock every X mins.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=279073&highlight=zenyee
Download the application and it will allow you to change the time until lock. I have mine set to 24hrs.....It doesn't lock at all now!
Cheers
Aidan
Hi Aidan,
Thanks for the reply but it is not the lock that is causing the problem. I can set the time upto 24hrs (which I have) but this does not stop the problem. I can unlock, launch media player (or any app), press the power button to switch of screen, media player will still be playing the music fine. But then when I press the power button to turn the screen on everything running is stoppped and I get presented with the home screen.
If I reflash the Rom everthing works fine but as soon as i connect to exchange and i set the security it imediatly reverts back to the problem. I have tried this on many WM6 roms and they all do the same.
I have even set the security manually without the connection to excahnge and it still has the same problem.
Hope I am making sense.
Cheers

Hello,
i am using my touch cruise (or better o2 xda orbit 2) for navigating on my bike.
I use it in my pocket, only listening. After some research and testing i found a way to use tomtom with locked screen.
I now want to turn the backlight off because of power consumption. But when locked the backlight is only turned to minimum, not off. How can i turn off the backlight completely ?
I tried several tools which turns the whole display off. This works fine with all applications except tomtom, i dont know why but as soon as the display is switched off tomtom stops.
So i want to turn at least the backlight completely off, but how can i do that?

With my older pocketpc's and pocketphone's the backlight could be turned down with pressing the power button for a longer period.
I told it was about 3 sec holding te powerbutton and the backlight stops.
But with the HTC TC i din't tried it yet..and my device is now at the repair centre..so you have to try it.
But when the backlight is down..you don't see a think when ther is enough sun light..so why do you want that..buy a usb car powerplug and you can charge it and use it with full light on!
Does not work (3sec pwr button)
I dont need to see anything on the screen. it will be in my pocket while navigating so theres no need for backlight.
And a car charger on the motorbike - that would need a socket to plug it in.

Thanks, i already tried it before. As soon as the screen gets black TomTom stops.
It says it turns the backlight off but as far as i can see it disables the whole screen. And as soon as this happens the f***ing TomTom stops the Navigation.
If i press the pwr button for 3 sec the device asks me if i want to turn it off.

Hi remoh, I'm having the same problem. Have you found a solution for disabling the backlight by now?
How did you manage to lock the screen and keep TomTom navigating?
Let me get this straight... do you want to turn the screen off (i.e. lock it) or just turn off the backlight (in which case the screen remains active)?
For the second case there should be some options for it in TomTom, but it's primarily for in-car use. (never used TomTom before, it's crap for my country... i'm just basing on iGO)

Being able to turning the screen off would be great but just being able to turn off the backlight would be fine also. Tomtom doesn't have an option for this afaik.
Now, thats the second reason i won't use TomTom... if the first wasn't enough
Not even power saving options?
I've tried a search to no avail.
Is there a way to just have the screen turn off with putting the device to sleep? On my TP if I'm listening to music thru the HTC built in music player or Coreplayer (streaming media), the phone no longer sleeps after a time out. It simply stays on with the screen dimmed. This is wasting battery life in my pocket. Can I just turn the screen off and keep the device awake? Pressing the power button puts it to sleep and the music stops.
Is this normal or is it because I've enabled auto lock feature with advanced config?
On my old universal I could just close the lid to turn the screen off. Is there a way to do it on this - maybe something like press and hold the power button while it's locked (otherwise it'll turn off!). Or better still - for it to recognise music is playing and just turn the screen off automatically and not sleep.
Cheers,
LLOYDY
Am I being stupid and missing something ridiculously obvious or is this not possible?...
I am working on an app that can to do this.
The current development thread is here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=431328
You can be my VGA tester if you like . (Post and problems / findings / etc. in there)
Download 0v01c and change the settings to Lights Out, then press Sleep.

Try the excellent today plugin called DevState (Device State). Its has a "turn off screen" option which is what I think you are after.
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-devstate-v1-5.html
It can be seen in my today screen below:
Cheers guys! Will look into these.
Stupid me - phone goes off by itself anyway. You just have to wait.

I've searched for this one but can't find any mention of it...
I'm finally switching back to an o2 Serra / Touch Pro after they finally admitted to having some in stock again! (Not through sales channels though, and it took a five page letter complaining about their Customer Service!).
Anyway, over the last 3 months I've had to make do with an SE xPeria X1.
The one thing about the X1 (other than the WVGA screen) that I preferred with the X1 was that you could hit the power button to turn the screen off and ActiveSync (and therefore MyMobiler) would stay connected. Nice!
Is there any way to make the Touch Pro do the same?
Cheers,
FM

Find a program that only shuts the screen off like HandyMenu.
The power button puts the phone in standby.
I use Pocket controller to view the phone on my PC and use Haandy Menu to turn off the screen.
Is there much difference in power consumption between standby and just screen off?
What I'm thinking is, is it a good idea to change the function of the power button (I know there are tools to do that) to only switch off the screen in normal use as well or am I going to just make the short battery life more of an issue?
Cheers,
FM
I might have missed the point here, but why would you only want to turn the screen off in normal use?
I can understand not wanting the screen on (in line of sight) if its in a cradle syncing all day, but unless you're wanting to have programs running & working all day (gps mapping something i guess) i cant see any advantage.
Finally, i'm not sure if you can unmap the power button, you can almost certainly re-map it, but that may not remove the original function (i cant test today, mine's off for repair).

I've often wondered the same thing. My phone sits on ActiveSync all day at work with the screen un-necessarily on. There has to be a fix other than a paid application...
Essentially I'd like to replicate the power button function of the SE X1 on the Touch Pro.
The X1 seems to only power off the screen rather than going into standby - ie all apps keep running, bluetooth and wifi stay connected etc.
This means that when the phone is connected using MyMobiler or similar the screen can be off as I am displaying the screen contents on my PC screen.
Rather than having a seperate function to switch the screen off (I'm going to try EdgeWat PocketPC Utils for that), it would be nice if the power button could be mapped to just switch the screen off.
My concern is that if I swap the functionality of the power button (their do seem to be a few apps that allow you to re-assign the power button funtion) I won't just be using it this way when the phone is connected to a PC, I will ALWAYS be just switching the screen off. So, when I am out and about would doing this cause a big increase in battery drain?

And I would guess this functionality must be possible in software as it seem the Pandora client does it when you are running it:

Hi
I am using HTC touch 2 (MEGA) with TomTom navigator.
Before I bought yhis device, i was using Tomtom without the screen, and only listening voice.
But on this device, when I press red button (to turn off display), the Tomtom is still running, but GPS is deactivated.
How to turn off display without disconecting GPS? Or leave GPS working, while tomtom is running and the display is turned off?
Thanks

I never found a solution for this
In tomtom, change the backlight settings to use the devices settings... then the backlight will drop out. I don't think you'll find a way of running with the screen off, because when you turn the device off, it goes to standby.
You could use mortscript, and have a script with 'Toggledisplay' in it, then assign it to the lng press of the send key - that would turn the screen off and on without putting the device into standby.
