I'm aware there are multiple threads about tethering (sorry for creating a new one) and how they charge you or monitor you if you go over 2.5GB or 5GB but im still confused. Alot of the post are takling about using the $15 plan.
Can anyone give me a quick and clear answer to this question? Heres my situation
1. I have the ATT FUZE with the $30 Unlimited Data Plan.
2. I plan to only use this when i don't have access to Wifi
3. I stream from my Slingbox and Orb occassionally and sometimes youtube.
4. I want to play counter Strike occassionaly usually for 2 hour session when im stuck in hotel rooms.
When i plug in the USB cable i'm presented with Menu and choose Internet Sharing and am able to to connect to the Media Net connection just fine. Should I be using this or a different setting.
Is there a way to monitor the data usage and cap it at 2GB ir 4.5GB so I don't go over 5GB?
I don't understand the difference with the $30 and $60 tethering plan. If they both cap you at 5GB/month whats the point in getting the $60 if you can tether with the $30 plan.
Have you tried playing a game over 3G? It is extremely lagy, ping times are about 250ms

Ill break it down for ya
Media Net.. For non PDA devices.
Pda Personal.. For Pda devices.
Tether.. (self explanatory) plus it allows data on the device itself.
Monitor Data... Use online account manager or *DATA#
Now there is a way to tether with media net. But you need to read the existing threads I have spent hours explaining.
If you have any other questions P.M. me
I was curious of those of you using AT&T's service and have Fuze's. What plans do you have? What do you think is the best overall plan? for unlimited text messaging and unlimited data plan, i dont need many minutes. thanks
Personal plan = 1350 mins $79.99
Unlimited text and media net = $50.00
Maybe the 59.99 plan?
i use the $15 medianet for unlimited internet

Did you already buy the fuze? Or are you going to get it from ATT with the rebate? Cause if you get it from them there going to put you on the PDA plan... which cost more that the $15 unlimited media net... you supposed to have the PDA plan for the FUZE but ONE way around it is if you bought the phone without contract and just added the $15 media net unlimited... but theres other ways around it..

no i already have the fuze, but no service. i need service and i want to know what i should do? i want the cheapest possible plan, but i need unlimited data and text messaging. should i act like im going to buy a motorola razer? and get the unlimited internet package on it? I mean will it work on my fuze? thanks
the cheapest is probably
450 minutes - $39.99 with
MEdia Max Unlimited (Text & Web) - $35
that'll give you 450 minutes talk time along with unlimited data and unlimited messaging. since you already have the phone it should be no problem getting the non-PDA data plan.
just go in and sign up for a plan and get a sim card.

Is it really possible to use Media Max with a PDA phone?
I thought AT&T didn't alllow this?
Do AT&T charge extra to have internation roaming?
if you want media max for $15, sign up for it using a regular phone such as a razr. the plan will be $39.99 (voice) + $15 (data). After you sign up for the service, just take out the sim card and put it in your fuze at home. Note that this is against the agreement you signed with AT&T. All PDA phones (yes Fuze is a PDA phone) are only allowed to have PDA data ($35 stand alone or $30 if you tie it to a voice plan). By having media max for $15 you're essentially involved in fraud. Some people obviously have no problem doing that, but if you have a conscience you might want to just sign up for a voice + data plan for Fuze ($39.99 + $30)
and yes ATT does charge extra for roaming.
1. Cheapest will be Nation 450 @ 39.99
2. Best value is Nation 450 or Nation 900 w/ early N&W (extra 60 hours a month of unlimited talking)
3. AT&T DOES NOT charge for roaming. If you are flagged as an excessive off-network roamer, the only consequence is a pushed back upgrade date. Anyone who tells you different is wrong.
4. If you DO sign up for MediaNet or MediaMax and use the IMEI from a RAZR or what have you, note that you will be faced with the following:
- It will be counted as fraud and violate AT&Ts Terms and Conditions leaving you open for legal action or service cancellation
- You WILL NOT receive insurance replacements
- You WILL NOT get the instant $100 Data Phone discount and $50 MIR meaning you will pay $450 for the phone. And no, you can't ask for it. And it's going to look fishy going into a store buying the phone outright and not getting the IMEI activated onto your account. You might get investigated.
- You CAN NOT call customer service or tech support with issues regarding your phone. They will investigate your account, notice the IMEI discrepancy and put the correct smart phone plan on your account.
Get the correct data feature.

AT&T doesnt charge extra for international roaming?
I thought they charge extra if you receive data when you're in, say, Canada. Same goes with phone calls. could you please clarify? thanks
wouldnt att notice the high data consumption through a regual phone and ivestigate anyway?
No. To be clear, the plan separation is ATT's way of charging per use. Basically they use different plans for different phones that are more data intensive (iPhone, Blackberry, PDA phones). The phones all use the same data network (PDA phones get assigned a publicly addressable IP, there is that one difference) and get the same data throughput. They don't really monitor data usage (except for crazy high amounts), and the infrastructure's not really there to have everything separated out, so they just sign you up with a data plan that's priced to the phone you buy. Then they put some legalese in the account agreement to try to enforce that. I've never heard of them actually enforcing it.

I work for ATT and i have to agree. like he said, its in the contract but as far as enforcing it, there is no worry, unless for crazy data usage. i do it all the time for friends that dont wana pay 30 a/mo. $75 a month is the best possible price you can get unless you work for a company that provides a discount. ie Best Buy is a 21% discount, USPS is 28%...
what about att recognising your imei and changing the plan to match? a friend of mine said that att recognized and changed her plan to a pda plan and her phone as the blackjack she used. anyone hear of this happening?
Ok, So, ATT offers unlimited data like Verizon right? Wrong. They charge an additional $15/month for tethering (which is included in the $30 unlimited data fee for Verizon)
So, anyway, I was on the phone with ATT, thinking I might switch, when I asked him "Well how do you know when/if I am tethering and when I am not, if it is unlimited data?"
He said they have to send a "special cable and a piece of ATT Software on CD". Hmm, this makes no sense, since in a custom ROM (or after you have installed the internet sharing CAB) all you have to do is go to Internet Sharing, and click "Connect", and you are good to go. Activesync will recognize your phone the first time as Windows Mobile Device Modem, then you are online, that's it.
So, is ATT charging $15 extra because people are ignorant about the process? Hoping that they don't figure out you can do it already and don't need to pay for it? They are basically charging $15 a month for a 50 cent cable. Am I missing something here? anyone can get the InternetSharing CAB file installer, and never send ATT an extra cent.

They're charging $15/mo extra because they know folks tethering are generally going to use more data. There might also be quota differences when tethering, that I'm not sure about.
Stop pretending to be obtuse about a "50 cent cable".
Read the TOS, tethering is not unlimited, it is limited to 5Gb per mo. and this is what is against the rules in your unlimited plan on Verizon:
Examples of prohibited uses include, without limitation, the following: (i) continuous uploading, downloading or streaming of audio or video programming or games; (ii) server devices or host computer applications, including, but not limited to, Web camera posts or broadcasts, automatic data feeds, automated machine-to-machine connections or peer-to-peer (P2P) file sharing; or (iii) as a substitute or backup for private lines or dedicated data connections. This means, by way of example only, that checking email, surfing the Internet, downloading legally acquired songs, and/or visiting corporate intranets is permitted, but downloading movies using P2P file sharing services and/or redirecting television signals for viewing on laptops is prohibited. A person engaged in prohibited uses, continuously for one hour, could typically use 100 to 200 MBs, or, if engaged in prohibited uses for 10 hours a day, 7 days a week, could use more than 5 GBs in a month.
For individual use only and not for resale. We reserve the right to protect our network from harm, which may impact legitimate data flows. We reserve the right to limit throughput or amount of data transferred, and to deny or terminate service, without notice, to anyone we believe is using an Unlimited Data Plan or Feature in any manner prohibited above or whose usage adversely impacts our network or service levels. Anyone using more than 5 GB per line in a given month is presumed to be using the service in a manner prohibited above, and we reserve the right to immediately terminate the service of any such person without notice. We also reserve the right to terminate service upon expiration of Customer Agreement term.
You heard them, use more than 5GB per month and they will "immediately terminate" your service "without notice." You know, if you're going to sell an "unlimited access" plan, shouldn't it not limit your access?

$15 for tethering on TOP of the already $30 charge is ridiculous, and the sole reason I will never go wth ATT. That is not the case with Verizon. I tether everyday, using my phone as my primary modem. I download about 2-3GB a day (not a month) of data. I have been doing this for the past 8 months. I actually specifically asked the representative if there was a bandwidth per month cap, and he said "there used to be, but not anymore".
Is sprint more lenient? Because i heavily stream and download through my phone and they have never even sent me anything...

Exactly my point...Sprint and Verizon actually mean "unlimited" when they say it, lol. It appears that only the GSM carriers get all uppity about it, specifically ATT.
P.s. - when my Verizon contract was about to expire a week ago, I called up ATT, because I had been thinking about switching for a while because it might be cheaper...well boy, was I wrong. The EXACT plan that my wife and I have on Verizon, would have been $240/month on ATT. Right now we pay $150 for 1400 minutes/unlimited text/unlimited data (both my wife and I have PDA phones), tethering included. On ATT they wanted almost $100 more?? Wow. glad I stayed with Verizon. I called up Sprint, and they were the same as Verizon, cheap If I ever switch it will be to another CDMA carrier.
What I quoted was Verizons current TOS. The fact that you get away with 2-3GB a day doesn't make it right.
And just because you haven't gotten caught doesn't mean that some day they won't review your bill and send you a $2,000 dollar charge for overages and throw the TOS in your face,

You apparently didn't hear me...the Verizon reps themselves have told me (on multiple occasions now), both reps in the store and on the 800 number, that there is no more cap, and they do not care if we use it tethered all day long or not, lol. I think I will go by what Verizon told me rather than an outdated TOS that has not been updated by their webmaster obviously.
If they told me, on the phone and to my face that what I am doing is fine, then they have no recourse to send me a $2,000 bill. i think maybe you're mad that verizon allows it and ATT doesnt. Everyone already knows Verizons data plans and speeds are way better, so why have this argument. I know what the VZW employees told me, and I am going with that. The same applies to Sprint, they honestly do not care if you use your phone as a modem 24/7 either. It's only ATT that has a stick up their butt about it.
I don't know if this is the appropriate place for this..
anyway I have an HTC Fuze. I just got off the phone with ATT and had my data enabled. I got the 30 dollar unlimited messaging and data plan. does this only apply to some media max garbage, or can I use Opera and browse the web without getting charged rediculiously
It is unlimited. You can download and use the internet as much as you want, and to your content. There are 2 different versions of the internet on ATT.
The $15 MEdia Net for "dumb" phones, that has limited internet.
The $30 PDA Unlimited Plan that has unlimited/full internet.

MediaWorks Unlimited, you need to sign up with a non-PDA IMEI, (or call customer service and change IMEI on record), $30 will get you unlimited messaging and unlimited internet. Tethering is also possible if you use \windows\intshrui.exe. Yes, everything ATT wants to charge $60+ for is entirely technically possible on a $15 data plan. There are no functional differences between MediaNet Unlimited and PDA Personal.
Keep in mind that the $30 plan does not allow for tethering your FUze to a laptop, that plan is like $50/month. BUT... there's a way around it so that you can still use the cheaper plan and get tethering on your laptop. It requires a registry hack, if anybody is interested let me know and I'll find the reg keys and post them here.
I remember reading some fine print verbage a while back stating that they generally limit you to 5gb of data transfer per month. On the rare chance they notice you're getting anywhere in that range they might investigate your usage and start charging you per kb over - most likely to dissuade you from downloading pr0n, warez, and mp3z.

Hmmmm I dont think they are the same my friend. One allows you to connect to isp.cingular and use [email protected] ( Supposedly able to precache certain pages for PDA'S to make them load faster ) as your log on and apn. I have noticed that depending on my area, I get MUCH better throughput / lower latencies depending on my area.
Just my opinion though I suppose

Thats a possibility for AT&T,
For Verizon (Like myself), we get unlimited, period. They cannot turn us off, or charge us for going over. They can however slow us down if we reach 5GB, but still if they charge us per kb if we go over 5GB then theres trouble.
the 5GB limit before charges applies only to their tethering plan, which you need to pay double for. However you can just use wmwifirouter or something else to do it.
Note. According to their ToS, And legal docs, they can shut you down for doing things against their terms which are
Hosting a server
Streaming data FROM your phone (Not to it)
and torrenting.
however, they cannot terminate your contract for tethering without their software, nor can they change your plan.
would love to get the hack.

I have a ATT Fuze with unlimited internet for $30 but the text messaging is seperate from the $30 internet, its like $5 a month for 200 texts or $20 for unlimited texting.
Yeah around here the only thing you can get for AT&T as the absolute minimum per month is the 450 anytime minutes for $40\Month, then the 200 messaging plan for $5, and the data plan for $30\month. That's $75 a month. 200 messages isnt NEARLY enough per month, I really need to have unlimited, which is $20\month. So that is $90 a month. That's way too much! Thats why when I get my Fuze I will not be going with the Data plan. $60 per month is still a lot.
Hi i have mobile wifi router installed on my phone (came with duttys rom) and i was wondering if using it my network could tell and charge me extra?
I have an unlimited data plan but i know I could pay an extra £10 and then my phone could be used as a mobile boradband device, does this mean that if i try to use the mobile wifi router program that my carrier would be able to tell and block it or charge me extra?
Also is there a way to share the phone connection with a pc without using wifi and without having to buy the networks extra mobile boradband package because I will almost never use it but its good to know i have the option if i go on holiday or whatever, maybe i want to prows the web in the garden soemthing like that
no wifi works even if you don't have a sim card in the phone
just like pda's with wifi and no phone
just like your laptop connecting with wifi to the router
just like your desktop connecting with wifi or cable to the router
no its not that, mobile wifi router converts your phone into a router so your laptop/whatever can connect to it and use its data connection to connect to the internet, I was just wondering if doing this the network can tell and then charge me extra as they usually charge for using your phone as an internet access point
the connection from the phone to the laptop or computer is free anything wifi
the cost to go onto internet will however depend on your satat rates, just to be sure id ask your operator
Hi thanks for trying to help, but thats not what I was asking. I know wifi connections are free what I was asking is if my operator will be able to tell the difference between my phone using its data connection and my laptop using my phones data connection.
The reason I ask is that I have unlimited data for my phone.
but
you can pay extra money to upgrade your account to allow your phone to be used as a mobile broadband dongle
but if they can't tell the difference between phone using its data and pc using its data then there is no need to pay the extra money.
is this the case or am i missing something
Depending on your operator, there could be a max of MB's. So it might be 500 MB/month, but also unlimited internet. With that, you are able to use it without any extra costs.
Is it possible to somewhat put up a wifi network on your phone via some program (WiFi Router is one I think) and connect to it and use it ON your phone?
aaah teething
as far as I know they should not be able to detect it
but I could be mistaken
If the usage is large 500MB/month, carrier might suspect unusual activity. teething is paid service with some carriers.
I have a G1 tethered on T-mobile USA. I have talked to customer service. They said they do not support tethering but that it is not illegal. Their solution is to allow a soft cap of 10gb of data service with their unlimited plan and once you reach the cap they throttle the internet speed down from 3g to 2g levels. Not to horrible. I play all my online games with my G1 connection, Counter Strike Source, Perfect World International, Flyff, and download quite a bit of music and usually only reach about 300mb a day which gives me a full month of service before i reach that cap. And at the start of the new month I get reset.
I´m in the same situation.
I´ve got an unlimited data plan, which covers phone/PDA use, but EXCLUDES using the device as a modem for a PC/Laptop (tethering).
I´ve tethered it ocasionally, and it worked.
My carrier didnt charge me extra, nor blocked. BUT i know the risk exists. I´ve tried to research.
What i read is that carrier COULD tell if you are tethering by traffic analysis (one way is looking the user agent of your web pages request, which identifies yor browser), but that this traffic analysys is not practical, and most carriers dont do it....by now.
So of you tether ocasionally, you are safe.....today, ....until carriers perceive there is a number significant enough to make profits,of people tethering under a data plan intented just for phone use, then they can start charging you.

ha nice, well im gonna give it a go anyway and see what happens, its just funny that they specifically advertise to upgrade your account to be able to do this as if they can somehow tell. I dunno what mobile boradband is like in the us but in the uk there advertising it all over the place as if its someting people really need instead of something that is ocasionally useful, apart from in your case its mad how much you do through your phone.

thanks for this, if the only thing they can do to check is by the web requests of your browser surely there is a way to pretend to be opera mobile for example which should receive the full web anyway. Is it possible to somewhat put up a wifi network on your phone via some program (WiFi Router is one I think) and connect to it and use it ON your phone?

I don't quite understand this question, you could use the program i mentioned to make your phone into a wifi access point and use its data connection to the internet then anything you like could then connect to it e.g. another phone, psp, ps3 laptop .....
is that what you ment?
