Does any one know of a theft alarm that will give a warning when my mobile is away from the receiver (in my pocket) more than a certain distance? Maybe built on RFID technology or blue tooth?
Your question made me imagine a phone tied by a piece of string to one of your pockets, so if someone jerks it out without you noticing, it would also jerk your pants. lol
that would be the simplest solution; still, I prefer technology, a very tiny transmitter hidden in the mobile, preferably a passive RFID tag so it will not contain a battery which then will be paired to a receiver that can only detect this tag. If the mobile is out of range, a buzzer and vibrating alarm is activated in the receiver.
I know that this seems possible, however, current RFID readers are priced in Ks of $, and this will not make it feasible for every one to buy it.
There are some alarms in the market with the same idea but built on different technology, their problem is that the transmitter is noticeable and the thief can simply remove them the moment he picks the mobile.

Also, if the phone slip of your hand, the string will prevent it from drop to the floor. Not a bad idea, expecially you get two protections for the price of one.
If you carved some gooves into the side of the phone you could make a yoyo too.
come on guys, where I live, 3 out of 5 mobile owners had their mobiles theft at least once, if we use the string alarm, I imagine every one walking down the street is screaming out of pain because a thief tried to steal his mobile and had to let go when he found it stringed, this sudden release hearts I think

if someone wants my phone badly enough to try and take it from my pocket i garentee there will be some sort of weapon involved and they will want my wallet and keys too and that being the case they can have it.
also considering that most people are aware that a phone can be tracked via the cell network who would buy it? its not like you will pay $50 down the pub for it knowing that someone would have reported it stolen and ur average thief aint smart enough to know how to change the IMEI number nor would anyone who is stupid enough to buy a $50 phone at a pub with half a string attached to it (LMAO)

Obviously you have not been on any poor parts of the world, based on your opinion. But in reality, there are parts of the world where cell phones don't have insurance, and they do sell it on the nearby pub, and people actually will buy them believe it or not. Just my observation.

where I live, it is exactly as what cktlcmd described, a phone may cost the salary of several months to some people, police can not track all of them and they get stolen only when you loose your attention for one moment (it takes less than 30 seconds of not paying attention to loose your mobile as per statistics), so may be a theft alarm does not sound feasible where st3v3 lives, but here, it sure is. Besides, loosing the data and having someone looking at your personal data is what hearts more.

As for Menneisyys's back up idea, it sure will save most data but not all of it, still, it will not prevent others from seeing my sensitive data stored on the phone.

I know that there are countries where a phone cost a few months of salary.. but I'm pretty sure that in those countries, there are always cheaper alternatives. E.g. India's gazillion-aire may buy an A380 as private jet.. build a tower as his own house.. but they do have pretty cheap cars (as I heard, £1,000+). Hence, I don't really understand when people are willing to spend several month of salary on a phone. If that's the case, then probably that's a risk they have to take. E.g., you don't get a convertible car in China unless you are prepared to hire body guards.
AND, if that phone is going to cost the person buying the phone x months of salary, I would think it would cost y (where y > x) months of salary for the person who is stealing it, and some beeping gadgets will not do the job. The beeping gadget will probably make a `theft` to a `robbery`, I think.

You can encrypt everything on, say, your card in the background - WM6 already supports this. Also, there already are Remote Wipe solutions.

is it that hard to give us a stable OS? a fast cpu and ram and more ram? good touch screen (i like the way the iphone screen worked). an accelerometer w/ g-sensor (that is unlocked to apps (again iphone got this right, whats wrong lg?? come on!!) wifi, gps, a normal usb (mini or micro), & at least 1gig internal mem and a micro st slot, and let me multitask all of my apps at the same time, i dont want to quit a game so i can look up something on the internet or take a call, that why we have task managers, to manage tasks.

They should call there next os "Windows Crash" and "WMCrash" because thats all my computer and phone do is "crash"
would it be against copyright laws to take an iphone 3gs setup, add a full QWERTY keyboard (slide out or flip) change the OS to Android, slightly change the look and button layout and market it as a new phone?

Why doesn't HTC make a phone like that ? It would be obnoxiously expensive to put all that technology into one phone, unless they put a super new battery in it, the current batteries will never run all those features. And no one wants to pay for what it would cost to sell a phone like that.
Like cars, you pick out the features you want, find a phone that has most of those features at a price you can afford, and then spend the next year whining about all the things your phone can't do.
ATT will never get anything good in fear it would compete with the iPhone. To make a phone with all those features, would cost a fortune and some stuff isn't for everyone. That's why we have "affordable" smartphones like the Smart, Wildfire, Tattoo, etc and more extravagant phones like the HD2, Nexus, Desire, etc.
because if this does happen, companies can't make more cell phones sell because the one cellphone has everything YOU need.... and everyone's needs are different, like how I don't like the HTC HD2's large screen...

I used every feather on my iphone 3g. I use the sh!t out of my phones, and i expect them to run fast. the biggest thing i didnt like about the stock os on the iphone was it didnt multi-task but i found a fix to that (backgrounder & multifl0w)

A hardware keyboard should be a "duh." I have a myTouch, and love it. However, I feel buyers remorse often because I just didn't get a keyboard. However, it doesn't add 400 dollars just for a hard keyboard.
Flash is on its way - which has nothing to do with the hardware.
I have to say, OP is right. Smartphones are really lacking what they're actually capable of. And, with a service plan, price might be like 300 dollars (if the manufacturer wasn't money hungry). I'd pay 300 dollars for a phone like that with a service plan. I'd pay 800 to a grand for one with no service plan. Why? Have any of you looked at the price of that p.o.s. iPad? I could go buy a laptop 2x better than the iPad WITH TOUCHSCREEN for the amount of a 64 gb (which is NOTHING) iPad. Probably 5 times better for one without touchscreen.
Of course, this is just my opinion. Also, I have to admit, they are advancing faster and faster. Even with the possibility that they could exist now... I see them actually existing VERY soon.
Edit: As PurpleLlamaLover said, though, I dount AT&T will ever get a phone better than the iPhone because A. It's not like it would even be noticed and B. What he said, they don't want to compete with it. Especially if its cheaper. Which it probably would be.

while there is room for growth on the smartphones, there are great things to be said about alot of the same phones. every user has different needs and wants and i would find it difficult to try and predict what would satisfy every consumer. the list of desirables outlined by jw_mahoney81 pretty much describe my tp2 and hd2. i still dont understand why windows devices crash. i have however heard that technology is only as good as the user.

1. Give us a full refund so we can buy an out-of-contract smart phone through our provider.
2. Provide us with the same phone or a software update IMMEDIATELY that makes GPS work
There are no other options. What Samsung is doing is fraudulent and illegal. You cannot advertise a product with a feature it does not have. We were lied to and charged for a device under false pretenses. It's completely illegal and there should be some sort of restitution. It's not like we're asking for something it didn't have or we're asking for better performance...we're simply asking for a major major feature that is on most/all high-end phones and, more importantly, a feature it's advertised to have...
So we ALL need to take 15 - 20 minutes out of day to file complaints until someone takes notice.

2. Samsung directly - This seems to fall on deaf ears but I think if a few hundred or a thousand people keep complaining...someone will notice a pattern.

I did research on it, but, like everyone else, figured it would be fixed quickly with a software fix since I couldn't fathom a company as large as Samsung advertising something that blatantly didn't work.
Bottom line is the phone is great but it does NOT HAVE GPS...like it's advertised to have. Therefore, I cannot use MyTracks, GPS, Google Maps, Waze or any other feature that requires GPS. Therefore, I should get a refund for a full new phone out of contract.

I bought my captivate on launch day and had done as much research until then about the phone, mostly because I had been long debating getting a N1. However, seeing as I did buy my phone on launch day I had no idea the GPS didnt work. Frustrating yes, dealbreaker no. Guess Ive learned not to buy first run products.

Yeah, I've never been one to buy something on launch day (aside from maybe an video game). iPhone4 users learned that the hard way. Educating yourself as much as you can before you buy something is the best thing you can do for yourself. It's not like you'd go out and buy a Ford Pinto these days without researching it first. Everyone knows they were crappy cars.

My GPS has worked perfectly from day one. I bought my captivate on launch day and have nothing to complain about. Sorry to hear you have had issues with your device. Perhaps you should try to trade it in under your retailers return policy? Just a suggestion.

No offense Shovelhead, but the GPS functionality for many of us is extremely spotty. Even after several returns. Usually the AT&T folks tried to discourage me by saying it is just a software problem that will soon be fixed. Experience has shown me that a working GPS is a rare beast (at least one that works after a few days/weeks of use).
I have had 3 phones with GPS, one Samsung Blackjack and two BB. All have performed admirably with quick (less than 10-20 s) locks and excellent accuracy as seen on Google Maps and GARMIN Windows mapping products. I KNOW that phones are very capable of decent GPS performance. So far this is a gaping hole in my Captivate experience.
My speculation is that this is a combination software/HW problem. I am guessing that there may have been a batch of sub par GPS chips as well as poor driver interaction with the OS.

I thought my GPS was working fine as well. Until I tried My Tracks in the market. It's clearly wrong. It's got your general location, but on the highway, it's saying I cross over east/west bound highways. And veers me off the road.

I feel your pain but when your GPS locks what is the accuracy? Best mine gets is about 15m. That could easily put you on either side of the road.

Now I do have a working GPS on my phone since I upgraded to the leaked Froyo. But it is not by any means dead-on accurate. Now of course the day I tested it, it was sitting in my cup holder with a straight view of the sky via my sun roof, but it was also cloudy and rainy. For the most part, it followed me exactly, but there were some spots where it did go off. When I use it now I put it on my dashboard and it works better.
Now in my belief, a device like a phone which does multiple functions, does none of them well because you have to have some kind of compromise internally either with hardware, software, or coding. I would never use my phone as a GPS when I'm in dire need to go somewhere, for instance if I need to find my way to the nearest hospital ASAP. I'd use a real GPS like a Garmin or TomTom because that's what they are dedicated to doing. Now I realize that now they add other features to GPS devices like bluetooth and music players and whatever, but those are added after the GPS has been written, tested, guaranteed to work as advertised.

I believe mine is similar. If i'm walking, or just using GPS for the fun of it (not driving) it's got me. But when I'm moving, it's not the best. I still think it is a software problems, but meh... I really don't know.
I haven't tried tweaking with any settings though.
I agree totally and will be filing complaints, we should have a sticky how to jump throught all the paper work.

Also, I've got a buddy in europe with the i9000. He said the 2.2 update fixed the GPS. But, cog2.2/COE beta 4 "fixed" it as well. It just didn't give you the most accurate fix. It's 10-20meters in variance.
When I had my 3gs, I could turn on maps, and watch the little blue dot follow me whereever I went. I got rid of my first captivate bacause of the GPS and I got my second cause I love the phone...and 2.2 was leaked...lol
Anyway, I agree with the OP about Samsung being douches about GPS. It sucks. I've had 3 other Samsung phones and all worked without a hitch. I get this one, and GPS tells me to kiss its ass. My GPS hasent made a lock in 2 days. I don't want to take it back cause I really do love the phone, and I can live without GPS, but Samsung did advertise GPS and its not there. Wether we did research or not about the phone, it still doesn't change the fact that Samsung sold, and is still selling, a phone not as advertised and that is wrong.
What really makes people mad is that Samsung hasent addressed it yet. I think there hoping we forget about it.

My speculation is that this is a combination software/HW problem. I am guessing that there may have been a batch of sub par GPS chips as well as poor driver interaction with the OS.

People we all know about the fixes and so called tweaks to date. No bueno.
I haven't found any discussion about using Android devices without a phone carrier at all, is this possible or must the device be activaed on a carrier before it does anything at all? What I'm thinking of is basically the Android equivalent of the iPod Touch. It's still a smart device, still does wifi, still runs all those apps, but there's no phone service at all. More than blocking data plan that I have seen discussed, I want no voice plan either.
I know that some people think it's stupid enough to want a smartphone with no data plan on a carrier, you guys will probably think I'm retarded to want to leave out voice service as well. Well, I'd use it as a phone if I didn't have to pay for data plans and stick to wifi, as those other discussions want to do, but now that the monthly fee is absolutely mandatory on my carrier, well, I'm just not willing to pay that much. I've thought about buying an iPod Touch to compliment my dumb phone, but I'd rather have the Android equivalent so I'm not limited to apps approved by Apple.
I suppose some might say the Phillips GoGear Connect is what I should get, but I'll be annoying and say I want a front facing camera so maybe Evo 4G with no carrier service is even better so I can video skype with it. Would the Evo 4G work for me, or is it a useless zombie util it's activated on a cell carrier? What about other smartphone devices, do they all work or all not work?
Well you can buy uncontracted devices like I have and there are also plenty of tablet android devices that dont come with a plan. as for actual phone devices most of them come with a plan because its presumed that you will use it to make calls. Thats where tablets come in, usually contract free (Galaxy Tab exception) and allow for full use of the device using WiFi or another connection source.

My only problem with tablets is they are too big. I want something phone sized or iPod Touch sized. (which is about the size of a phone)
As long as the device is running 2.0+ (I think) , you won't need it tied to a carrier to use it. You can do it with older FW too but it would need a data plan so you can sign in and get to the home screen and use it. Newer FW, you can activate wifi during setup so you can log in to your gmail account.
Once logged in, you can use it like a iPod touch, download from the market, etc.
I have a Captivate, Incredible, and a Fascinate that I've been able to use while not hooked up to a carrier. I've even had a G1 without a carrier. Just had to borrow a friends SIM to log in to my gmail for activation but then works after that without it.

So I'm an adventurous 19 year old guy living on Maui in Hawaii. I'm also a sponsored almost professional scooter rider. So I look up behind me and what do I see? a 10,023 foot tall volcano called Haleakala. So I was looking around for something to do and saw my scooter. The nearest skatepark is too damn far so I hiked 13 miles up this volcano all the way to the summit at 10,023 feet and took pictures then bombed down the perfectly smooth paved rode 28 miles to the bottom at about 45 miles an hour on my kick scooter.
Blah blah blah, anyways...
I jumped over a nice dip in the rode and my HD2 which was just bought the day before flew out of my pocket at about 25 miles an hour and hite the ground once on the corner then flew off in to the grass. I found the battery, cover and phone itself after about 30 minutes of looking. The screen was good besides a few deep scratches and a nice sized dent in the battery cover. The plastic of the phone was pretty scratched as well.
Mad? Nahh not at all. I was looking for a reason to get a new phone already after 24 hours and this gave me a good reason to go get that sexy looking G2 I saw...
So Now I am happy with my G2 and also use my HD2 as my mobile computer with the Ubuntu and android OS on it. Ubuntu is for word processing since I am a writer. Android is for my camera and music and games. It works out amazing and I love the look of peoples faces when im messing around with two phones on the bus...
Go for it. You wont be dissappointed and it beats the IPOD touch hands down. Sorry I capitalized ipod, it didnt deserve it...

I know i am probably going to catch some heat. But anybody know how to carrier unlock this thing for free aside from asking att because i know answer because I tried . so i can use boost mobile. Read my story below to understand why I’m asking.
so back in mid 2020 me and my wife (who cant physically work) fell on hard times which resulted in our phone bill getting cut off and keep on growing, well back this December we got enough money to get me a phone for work, lg51 on boost mobile (cheapest best phone walmart had). (It’s junk) still can’t afford our bill plus imei check shows bill unpaid. I have tried a lot of places and either they want a lot of money or cant do it. I know I should be happy with what i have (which i am) but i miss the function of my note it’s easier to type on and see in daylight.

Update, well after talking with a company (google search) if i do get it unlocked it will work but may be permanent locked which would need a new imei, etc at the tune of $150. I would love to have my note work like it used to.
My wife has a family member who is smarter then i with tech but he hasn't responded to her messages due to past issues in the family.
I can use my note but i would have to take the lg with me to hotspot which im data capped at 15gb (for data/hotspot) then its low speed.
All i know is playing the same game (sweet escapes) on both note 10+ 5g and the k51. The k51 lags hardcore and freezes up even on max performance the other phone i can play any game (i run max performance for games) and never have any issues.
AT&T never forgets.
They will hound you until you come to terms with them. Talk to them and try to work out an arrangement you can honor... no harm in trying.

I need away to gain root privileges for the purposes of recovering deleted data. Unless there is another way to go about it? There are 3 phones involved all At&T carrier, Burner 1 is a Samsung S9 Plus (1st sp) , 2nd Burner is a Samsung Note 10 Plus and her everyday phone is a Apple 11 Max Pro. Apparently file recovery software is very limited without root access. When I read the guides it appears to root it is to lose everything. Is that true? Plus I dont really understand what I am reading most of the time.

All of the above. I am really hoping she discussed the various ways she duped us. For example my 6 year old saw her do this: I could not find my phone I checked a 1k times in my car. She recorded herself ( at a strange angle i might add) hiding it in my car but my little one in his stealth like ninjas ways, saw what she actually did. She used her free hand and pulled it out and placed it in my passenger seat in plain view as she panned from the floorboard to the seat and low and behold there was the phone. She then spent the next hour screaming and telling me I was crazy and losing my mind again. Once she figured out I was on to her, her phone use went from a few k with of texts and 20 plus GB of data used a month down to 4-500 text 1.5GB used. She saw I was researching spyware via my browser history and told me to research commsec, though I thought she said commsex. I was expecting to find some freaky alternative lifestyle, unfortunately is was just a security term the military uses,. Its crazy this woman is using these type of terms. Anyway
