hi i am using windows 5 on an xda orbit device - i have collected some cool sounds i would like to be used as text notification sounds but i have no idea where to place them so that they can be utilised for this purpose.... could anyone tell me the format of sounds required and where on the device i need to place them.
thanks in advance
Anything Windows Media Player can open you can use.
Put them in the Windows folder and they will show up in the drop down menu. Rings should go in the rings folder.

hi thanks to both of you for your input - when i do as you suggest the sound i wish to use still doesnt appear in the drop down menu and so i cant select it.
- this is the method i used -
"on the orbit" - file explorer -my device-windows - "paste sound file" then exit.
then i go to - sounds and notifications, notifications, event - messaging new text message - then drop down options menu but no sign of the file !!!!
am i not doing things correctly ? any further tips or instructions would be very welcome.
thanks in advance

That isn't quite true, for sms sounds you can only use wav files in WM5.
many thanks Xeno1 and all who contributed
exactly as you said i converted the mp3 file into a wav file using Easy CD-DA Extractor dropped it into the windows root folder and like magic the file was present in the selection drop down box ........ very happy now thanks to you all .

Thanks for your quote, BUT I cant find this wave at the Setting/ Notofication's "Sound selection", How to add the wave to this pop-us window?
PS: The wave is now located at the device memory.
unless you mean the windows dir when you say device memory it's not going to show up
you can try doing a search for wav files on the pda and place the wav file along with the others
simply, i think i have to explain the following :-
Tap on Start / Setting / Sounds & Notifications / Notifications
Ticl on Play sound
Exactly i need to Event : "Messageing : New Text Messaage" to be selected.
& MY WAV SOUND needed to be in the other Drag Box. !!!!
Thanks alot.
Put the .wav file in the /windows folder, not in any other subfolder in windows, just in windows....then u can find it in Start / Setting / Sounds & Notifications / Notifications in the new text message drg box....

Any idea how to set it up please or even if it's possible?

No, you have to place it in \Application Data\Sounds. Afterwards it will be available in the list shown in settings for event sounds.

All that you must do is to put mp3 files in a folder called my documents, on device or on storage card an you will find in tones list
Not sure if you just kinda overlooked this, but while you can change your Ringtone for calls from the "Phone" option in settings, you have to go to "Sounds & Notifications" for text messages.
I just put my sound files in the root folder of the storage card and it shows up.
Must be a wav file, must be in windows directory for you to use it as a sms alert. Nothing else will do.
MP3 works as well - at least on my TP with stock HTC German ROM.

My mistake, you are correct. Had to put the MP3 in Windows>rings.
Must be new to WM6.1
If it's a long MP3 can you stop the music or does it carry on till the end of the file??

im using the fuze, with RRE 4.5 rom, with mine if i place my mp3 on the window root folder or in rings they work for phone rings, but not able to select on text message, so i did as you said, place my mp3 in application data\sounds and bingo they work. only downside is you have to hit the "end" call button. you can mute it with the volume buttons, so if a text come in and its in your holder you have to take it out and hit the end button. hope this helps

Why not find and employ the MP3 trimmer that comes on the Touch Pro in many markets - or edit on your desktop with any of the readily available programs? You could have it go on for - like 5 seconds, then quit.
Personally, I save songs for ring tones and use the jetson's doorbell for SMS and MMS and HAL from 2001 saying: "There is a message for you..." for incoming emails.
Topic, please help out. Thanks in advance
1. Goto Programs
2. Open MP3 Trimmer
3. Trim if you like
4. Set as Default Ring Tone from options
This should be the easiest way.
You can also copy the mp3 into the Ring folder inside Windows folder. This might work as well.
To get a custom sound to work for any notifications, they must be in the .wav format and be in either the \windows\ or windows\ring\ folder depending on the default for your device (HKCU\ControlPanel\SoundCategories\Ring\Directory)
Easier way
Guys guys... Hold up. There is an easier way:
\\My Documents\My Ringtones\
If you don't have it, make the directory. This has worked since the Magician. You can select all files *.wav/*.mp3 in this dir. No editing no nothing. They will appear under sound options...
What I've done and it seems to work is, just take the .mp3 and put it in the \\phone\My Documents\ dir and then it appears in the little drop down menu in the sounds tab.
What I want to know is, is there a way to get it to stop vibrating and playing the sound after there has been some input on the phone, so that my .mp3 ringtone wont play for 2-3mins everytime I get a new SMS?
Hey all, got a question. I searched the boards for this but wasn't able to find an answer that worked.
I know you guys aren't using the lame sounds that came with the phone, so I gotta know--what's the trick? We've got an mp3 trimmer app that would work great, if anything other than phone calls worked with it. How do I get my mp3s to work as notification tones? Do I need to convert to .wav? If so, what's a good app to use, preferably on the phone itself?

nope MP3 is just fine but u need to "CUT" the file from were ever u have it and go to "MY DEVICE IN FILE EXPLORER" and hit "application Data" then "SOUNDS" and then hit paste!
and then goto into settings and hit "Sounds&Notifacations" then hit notifacation sounds and when it loads scroll to "incoming Text" and pic your MP3 File!
hope you understood that
they have to be small files, but they can be .mp3s i would think at least smaller than 200kb
edit the file with mp3 trimmer or you will need a wav/mp3 file editor like 'cool edit'.
put the files in this directory to have them appear in the settings - sounds -notifications - new text message:
application data\Sounds\
Works like a champ, guys.
Cheers!
theres no way to have it rotate through a few is there?
So I have an mp3 ringtone that is in the download folder on the internal memory. Where does it need to be placed so the device sees it and I can use it as a ringtone?
1. Open MyFiles
2. Browse to /sdcard/media/audio/. Create a folder in that folder called ringtones.
3. Move your MP3 to it. I think there may be a limit of 300kb for ringtones. I remember getting a warning when I was transferring the full song from my PC directly to that folder.
4. From the home screen press menu and go to Settings > Sound and display > Voice call ringtone. Your mp3 will show up as one of the choices on the menu.
Install the Astro file manager
Browse to the .mp3
Touch and hold on the .mp3
Select Music
Select Set as Ringtone
Tried the first method, and didn't see em showing up and stumbled into the one I posted fiddling around with trying to move the files around with Astro.
Better yet, put your ringtones, alarms, notifications into the following folders that way, only these certain sounds appear in those certain lists, so it doesn't clutter up the list:
\notifications\
\alarms\
\ringtones\
The above was actually written in the manual of the very first Android, the T-Mobile G1, and works on all Androids...
I used the ringdroid app to set a custom ringtone and text/email alert. I'll have to give the folder method a shot; it seems much simpler than opening an app and trimming the files from the phone every time you want a custom ringtone!
If you use the ringdroid/rings extended method, it will chop the song and copy it and make its own file, thus taking up space.

So, just create these folders at the root level of the sdcard and they'll automatically show up in the correct lists of sounds?
