games that use keyboard? - General Topics

Search didn't come up with this as a specific topic...
many of our HTC devices have a keyboard.. I'm wondering which games allow use of the keyboard at all (even if its just using arrows vs D-pad), and/or if any games truly take advantage of having a keyboard (ie. can you remap keys in mega-MAME the way you can in desktop versions?)
Edit: presumably this means running in landscape mode (at least for most devices with full kbds)
Thanks,
Mike

recall some fps games maybe it was doom or doom2 which had an onboard keyboard under the fps window
at least some of the emulators too
c64 i recall

I think all games that let you config the keys used to play. Like i use call of duty on my wizard and it works great but i would recommend that you open the keyboard first and then start the game because some games have problems when you open it during play.

Playing games on the i780

How does games react on this phone? Like spb games and astraware?
Can anybody tell me how the phone coupes with games?!?!
Samsung i780
Samsung i780
anyone knows how games play on this format OF 320X320.
because most game or 240x320, so I was wondering how games manage this format.
I got realVGA and I780 Cursor (if I need the cursor keys for a game). If you already have I780kbfix installed, you will need to shut it down before activating I780Cursor. You can find realVGA here in the forums and I780Cursor possibly too. Then you set RealVGA to the highest resolution (96 Dpi, I think) and reboot. If you need cursor keys, for a game, you activate I780Cursor. I recommend you to assign it to some key you don't really need and then always press that key to use 2, 4, 6 and 8 for moving and 5 for "enter". As I mentioned earlier, you have to quit I780kbfix first or you will get a "key hook error" (because both programs want access to the keyboard and only one at a time can have). If you are done with playing, you can press the key assigned to I780Cursor again to write normally again. Btw, I have to add that I didn't play many games on my I780, but the ones I tried worked perfectly.
spb games work perfectly since the company (asking money for them) just makes it accesible for any windows mobile phone on the market. i got spb online and braintester with all kinds of games and they work perfectly. the games adapt to your screensize so i advice their games .
but you can just try games like tangled buggs and so. they work good to.
for real gaming experience mario, rayman, etc. I would like to advice a screen with 230x240 (or higher).

Best working games for Samsung SGH I780 and games support

Okay, I will start by saying that this machine has been great. But samsung just didnt want to put everything in one phone! not yet anyway...( bad for their long term economics ) . Ok so general complaints are that this phone is 320x320 and does not have 3g for 850 (US). the mouse thingy can be set-up as a slide bar instead of a mouse so it's quite okay.
The 320 x 320 screen causes plenty of incompatabilities with programs, specially games because most games are simply unplayable if they dont function correctly with taps of touchscreen etc. Since we wont have our own section here in XDA, let's pool our thoughts here.
Lets keep this organized and you guys can go as detailed as you guys want. Genre etc. fix or games that do not work. Also put if you're using realvga as some games that work normally do not anymore under realvga.
I will start.
I have 2 games that are my favorite.
More games Orions
More games Azgard Defence
Warfare Inc. (works well)
More games Enslave (installs perfect but this game is just alright.)
I did not want to throw my games away so i tried to find ways. Also this thread would help those who have not bought the games
W/o realvga these games are simply retarded. wont even fit the screen.
Used realvga 96dpi
To get these games to work,
After installation with realvga these games work. The problem is stylus is off and u cant even enter the serial key.
It appears to the side and the location of the taps is the same except it's about an inch down.
1. Enter the serial by guesstimating the height differnce.... you'll get this with patience.
2. Once you have entered the serial, go to options and click reverse screen.
3. SAVE, Quit and reload, now you have a working orions and azgard defense game with proper taps, etc.
So guys any good games out there you can suggest and working and not working fixes. and list the ones that just plain dont work so it saves people time and money.
SPhynx
Games 99% compatible
ScummVM with what games it supports, works 99% perfect.
You just need to rotate screen 2 times to display "portrait" and everything is perfect .
(After first rotation, there is an issue with tapping, you must click under rotation icon rotate screen again to get portrait mode)
After that all the games works fine.
This makes the list of the games that work with the device way longer....
UNO installs and plays well
Kaboom cannot make it
Bejeweled can load but 2 side have black space .. making the game small
Big2 cannot play on i780 ..
what else ?
Games that work perfectly:
Atomic Cannon
Asphalt 4 Elite Racing (AWSOME GAME)
Dark Street
Holy Beast
Amiga Invastion
Mini Golf 2
EA Monopoly (Here and Now)
Pocket Uno
Resco Brain Games
is this games for free? where can i download it?
thanks

Mame or NES on Raphael?

I have tried PocketCultMame
http://www.pocketcult.com/home.php
But it is so buggy that it isnt an option for the raphael.
Also tried Pocket Nester for NES.
Nester seems to start the ROMs ok but the key mappings just dont work right.
Anyone got these anything or else to work well?
Curious
I would also like to know if the keyboard works with Pocket Nester. Anyone know?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=423444
seems to be a general problem
i have tried all the emulators with virtually no luck at all. Seems none of the keys every work for me
same problem here, it seems that HTC used a different technology to number the keys.
maybe because the touch pro has more buttons than most other devices.
Had same problem with games that use mapping (like worms for ppc, doom 1 & 2, etc), as well as with the DOS emulator.
It's a key mapping problem... when is someone going to create a program to use the capacitive part of the TP as buttons (so we can play and emulate stuff?) :^P
For the moment im playing with the device upsidedown, im using the Up, down, left, right as the D-Pad and strg + shift as A and B button.. not a very practical but it works.. i hope there will be a better solution for this problem..
Play full playstation games
I use FPSEce 0.9.6 beta and it works with red alert retaliation. The intro video is laggy but once you skip that and get into the game menu, its smooth.
You just rip your psx games to .iso format and copy to the SD card.

Any Updates?
Has there been any progress on this? I really want the Sprint Touch Pro! But if I can't map the keyboard for use with emulators, that would be a deal breaker.
Have you tried FinalBurn?
You can get it from:
http://www.modaco.com/content/smartphone-software-games/247894/finalburn-for-wince-0-014/
FinalBurn emulates CPS1, CPS2 and CPS3 games (including Street Fighter Alpha 3).
However there are several problems:
1. Low FPS during match (other games like XMENVSSTREETFIGHTER are better)
2. Jerky UNPLAYABLE performance with Sound ON.
3. Keyboard can't be mapped
4. Controls mapping issue
The degree to which FPS is impacted is dependant on the game.
This is my experience with the HTC Touch Pro.
I think we need a more optimised FinalBurn version.
Another problem is that the processor has to process 4 times more info for the VGA screen so it will probably work better in QVGA devices.
Unfortunately I've not found a way to adjust in game resolution.
This MAME emulator certainly has potential! Try it!
Here is a great solution for the keyboards issues:

i googled around for awhile and found a really great and supposedly rare emulator for nes its hard to find in english since its a jap build of nester only problem is games flip upside down in landscape mode but key mapping works great even with out kforraphel.
If someone know how to flip the screen ide really appreciate it since playing with the keyboard on to is pretty wierd.
also anyone have a good gba emulator outhere pocket gba is alright but not perfect...
bump- anyone how to fix the upside down screen in nesterj4u?

emulators which work with TG-01

hi all,
i have spent hours scouring the forums ranging from the classy htc diamond ( which i loved btw) to the experia x1 (which is also cool) trying to find a good emulator for nes/snes games which support touchscreen, wvga, and the tg01's lack of hard buttons.
if anyone has any ideas or links or anything so we can all get a great emu working for the 1ghz hand sized tv screen then brilliant.
****************************************
dont think im being a console-ist by only asking for nes/snes but the idea of playing ps1 games on this beast with no hard buttons doesnt exactly thrill me to bits, but if you want to share your findings with everyone then feel free

Play Station Emulator good? ^_^
There you go:
http://www.fpsece.net/
Just Google:
PSX /PS1 ISOs to get the games =)
Link for videos:

morphgear is best snes emu but like you say with no buttons or multitouch emus are only really good for rpgs which is fine for me, fpsece is best emu out.
i would have thought we would have fullspeed/sound snes considering you can for psx but you cant.
neway if you get morphgear for hd2 and dreeds mulitouchpad for the best experience for snes, and you have to use the virtual mouse thing (slide finger up over strip bit on tg01) to be able to click on the settings
I guess what we really need is a touchscreen hook that will capture slide events and fire the appropriate cursor keys whilst in specific apps. Is there anything like that already?
wel i had a think about it and we need to make a touch screen keyboard with the typical up, down, left, rihtt and a,b,c buttons and map them to keys such as the wasd configuration. we could invoke the keyboad to pop up with a reg key or something to piggyback on the emu to rocess.
im not a programmer so i have no idea how to make this happen but will help with graphics if anone wants to try.

unless i am misunderstanding what you mean then this is already programed into fpsece and morphgear (using dreeds pad).
eg press circle button and slide finger up = up and circle.
i cant see and better improvements to fake multitouch happening, sorry if ive misunderstood u tho
if this pic come sup then brilliant, this is what i would like personally.
a proper nes pad layout linked to the virtual keypad so i can play pokemon games and such ( please dont mug off pokemon games, for a turn based rpg its pretty good)
there must be a way to link this to an emu
i am willing to help anyone with anything they need to make this work
also....
on a side note, any way to speed up the screen rotation, from what i understand, the os asks the g-sensor what state its in then adjusts accordingly. where as on other phones the g-sensor tells the os what its doing. can we speed up the refresh on this or is it a no go for now?
Just wondering if anyone has got mario rpg on the snes working via morphgear on there phone. For me i can either crash after the opening screens, where u press start to start game, or after a little bit into the game. When it does work it takes about 5 sec's to load each battle, frustrating.
Can i play games FPSCE with this device?

@above not sure but you can just use a dualshock 3

Emulators: no-fuss options for Nexus Player

I'll maintain this thread so long as there's interest. In order for an emulator to be listed here, it needs to meet the following criteria
-must be able to open the app with the OFFICIAL Nexus Player gamepad (NPGP)
-must be able to exit the app with the official NPGP
-Must be able to configure all in-app options, to include gamepad button assignments, with the NPGP.
-Must be installable from the Nexus Player (waivable if installable from Play Store on PC)
-Must have a leanback launcher shortcut
Basically, if the emulator requires root, ADB, third party peripherals (for use or configuration), sideloading, etc., it won't be on this list.
NES:
NES.emu ($3.99)
Open the Play Store on your Nexus Player, and scroll up to search. Type or speak "Nintendo" or "emulator" and this will be one of the options that comes up. Alternatively, you can purchased and push install from the web-based Play Store. Open installation and first run, you should go to the settings and configure the gamepad for in-game actions (specifically, to exit the app).
SNES:
Snes9x EX+ (FREE)
Same as above (same developer and menu system).
I'd advise using the SNES emu first (as it's free) to learn how his menu/control setup works, then move on to his other paid emulators. You can see his other emulators at this page here - https://play.google.com/store/apps/developer?id=Robert Broglia&hl=en
Alternatively, you can open the Play Store on the Nexus Player, scroll up to search, and type/speak "emulator." Pretty much all of those are his. As I purchase his other emulators I'll add them to the above list when confirmed. If others wants to try them and report back, I'll also update the list based on that. If you find other emulators that meet the above criteria, please share.
Won't they get removed from the store soon? Emulators are banned quickly on Google Play, aren't they?

Most emulators on Google Play have been there for years. Nesoid and the other emulators made by that developer were removed for a specific violation. Here's a good article on the subject.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2011/0...nded-are-emulators-soon-to-be-banned-content/
Also, I'm going to go out on limb here. It's normally bad form to distribute links of ROM distribution website (and I won't post it here unless a moderator explicitly tells me that it's ok). However, there's one website that is actually legal (and as such, don't expect to find the best games here). Basically, the ESA has set up a way of protecting the rights of gaming companies and their work, while also offering some ROMs to gamers. Read more on the ESA here:
http://www.theesa.com/ (NOTE: Not a ROM distribution site)
Due to this, one website is completely ESA compliant and has, at the request of Nintendo (and other parties) intentionally set up dead links that will usually be at or near the top of Google results. If you search for a specific ROM on a Nintendo platform, and you click on the link for this specific website, all you get is a link that says "This page has been removed due to copyrights." What few ROMs are available on this website are legally freely distributed. Have at it.
The only problem I have with console emulators has always been the controller lag. This has been true even on my gaming PCs. Playing Super Mario 3 for example, on my SNES (bought one just for this game - lol) it's smooth and does what I expect it to. On my PCs, ADT-1, etc., there's always a minor lag that's just enough to throw timing off.
Mame for the most part on the PC has worked very well for fighting games. Chankast with MvsC2 was damn smooth for me. I'd love to see Android get to this level of emulation.

There are two types of lag that you'll have to deal with here: system timing and input lag.
System timing - Each emulator developer takes their own approach to this. For the SNES, for example, SNES9X and ZSNES took two different approaches. ZSNES made the system timing more consistent, while SNES9X attempts to emulate the system timing of the SNES to a fault. As a result, playing a game on SNES9X will more closely mirror the actual SNES than ZSNES will. Basically, if you're playing a game that requires timing, you'll have to completely relearn your timing on ZSNES, whereas SNES9X will require less (if any) adjustment.
As for Sega 8/16-bit systems and the 32X, you should ONLY be using Kega Fusion on the desktop. This emulator is made by the same guy who has been hired by Sega numerous times to help them port their "Ages" collections to various platforms. He has inside knowledge of the hardware which is why his emulation is so spot on. There should be no noticeable difference in timing between an actual SMS/Genesis/SegaCD/32X and Kega Fusion. Unfortunately, the emulators available for Android aren't based on Fusion.
Input lag - All monitors/HDTVs have a degree of input lag. If you're gaming at 60fps, you want input lag to be <16.67ms, or 1 frame. This ensure that your button response is never more than 1 frame off. NOTE: This has NOTHING to do with pixel response time advertised by LCD manufacturers. Do NOT confuse these two specs. Here's a database of PC monitors and their associated input lag - http://www.displaylag.com/display-database/
HDTVs have an inherently high input lag due to all of the processing that they attempt to do. If you're going to game on these HDTVs, you want to disable as much as possible by using any built-in game mode that the HDTV has. For example, I use a Samsung L46A650. I bought this HDTV in 2008 because, at the time, it had the best input lag control. To date, no HDTV has bested it, so I'm keeping it until it dies. If I use HDMI input 2, set the source to 1080p (possible with Xbox 360, not with PS3), and set it at PC mode, it acts as a PC monitor. Input lag is <16.67 ms in this mode. For other inputs, enabling game mode has an input lag of 16.67ms to 33.33ms (1-2 frames). VGA (Dreamcast) is <16.67ms. If you dare use standard or movie mode, input lag is 3-4 frames. And if you have component hookups (like my PS2) and forget to enable game mode, it's a horrid 4-6 frames worth of delay. Here's an AVS thread on it - http://www.avsforum.com/forum/166-l...-results-your-lcd-display-here-reference.html
Bottom line is that you can greatly reduce the timing issues that you're having by ensuring that you're using the optimal emulator, and properly configuring your display.
^Thanks for all the detail man! I'm using a Samsung TV as well and had been using game mode for my ADT-1 input. Switching it from Game to PC, I saw a significant improvement in the input lag; however, I do see occasional screen hiccups (just a quick flash while navigating). The SNES games (Mario 3 in this case, for comparative purposes) plays almost flawless and as smooth as my SNES. Not perfect, but a helluva lot better than in game mode. It's comparable to my PC at this point, from the quick 10 minutes of testing I did.

I'm glad that you found it useful. I want to clarify something from my prior post that I was misleading on.
There are essentially 3 classes of "modern" emulators for the SNES, and there are many that fall in around or between these classes. For this example, I'm going to refer to Higan (formerly BSNES), SNES9X, and ZSNES.
Emulation is tricky. The more accurate you attempt to be, the higher the system specs that you need. Due to this, Higan stands alone as the most accurate emulator. It won't do any graphics filters. It won't speed up games. If a game had a scene with horrendous slowdown on a physical SNES, it will have the same horrendous slowdown on this emulator in the same spot. If you want to perfectly emulate an SNES, don't care about modernizing the graphics, and have the specs to run it (quad-core 3ghz+ Intel Core series CPU), then go for Higan. Note: There's no equivalent for Android, nor could there be at this point.
At the opposite end of the spectrum is ZNES (and there are far worse emulators, but I'm picking on them). Like all emulators not named Higan, this program takes shortcuts to mimic functionality. More shortcuts means better speed and lower system requirements, but also more compatibility issues. Try playing Earthworm Jim 2 and you won't hear most of the sound effects.
SNES9X is a compromise. It is far more accurate than ZSNES and therefore has higher system requirements. It takes more of a 95/5 approach. It won't have the accuracy as Higan, but it also won't have the slowdown found in Starefox to the degree that a real SNES or Higan would. It also allows you to enhance the graphics with filters and such. It's also ported to damn near every platform (including the Android TV app mentioned in the OP). It won't be exactly like playing on an actual SNES, but it will be closer than most emulators while offering enhancements, and consistency across multiple platforms.
I have installed these emulators and these are superb.
