Hi guys,
I don't have a zune but am interested in purchasing a subscription to zune marketplace to buy music to listen to on my wm5 device. I know that Media Player supports DRM so...
Has anyone tried this or knows for sure if it does/does not work?
Thanks
Zune Pass DRM
Have not tested this myself, but according to cruchgear Zune Pass songs did work on a Plays-for-sure device. This was back in February and it is definitely not officially supported.

I am going to get a Zune pass this week and give it a try on my Tilt.

Hey everyone. I recently purchased a Zune Pass which I use on my computer and to stream on my Xbox 360. However I do not own a Zune yet and had read previously how Zune Pass songs will work on Windows Mobile devices. There are reports of people getting it to work on the tytn 2 so i figure it must be possible on my Fuze. I have tried syncing with WMP, however it claims my device is not compatible with the DRM the songs use. I can though manually drag the files to my device, and they will display album art and everything. But whenever i press play, it will just search for a song with no DRM and play that. Any input would be great, thanks guys for your efforts.
OK, so I'm currently working on getting this to work on my captivate. Not sure if it will or not, but I am hopeful. I will edit this post with a walk thru if I get it to work. But for now, I will start with two links I found that leads me to think this may be possible.

BTW, if this has been done before and I am just trying to reinvent the wheel, please point me in the right direction. I couldn't find much about this when searching
OK, so not much of a walkthru other than to say it does work.
First you have to put your phone into media player mode which is done in settings\application\usb Settings
Note: the phone does not seem to like to connect to the PC unless you are at the touchWiz homescreen. I had to clear default settings on Launcher Pro to get back to touchWiz for it to get into its media player mode.
Once you do that it should install drivers and show up as a syncable item in Windows Media Player.
After that, if you have a zune pass and have downloaded music with it in the zune software, it will show up in windows media players library.
I was most interested in syncing the zune channels that update once a week, so I moved those playlists to the phone, pressed sync and it worked.
Now if only I could get the zune playlists to show up in something like media monkey where syncing is a bit easier than with windows media player (my opinion of course).
Basically all it shows is that our captivate(and I'd assume all galaxy s varieties) will play DRM'd WMA files that fall in the realm of the windows plays for sure category. Good to know if you use subscription music through zune or have other uses for that.
This doesn't work with i9010. It says more sync rights are needed.
Unfortunate as I was hopeful after it worked with my N8.
Any thoughts for getting this to work on Armani S?

Any way of getting this to work with CM7.
I guess you need to be able to mount using MTP as opposed to USB storage.
Is that doable?

The links in OP point to the support of PlayForSure type of DRM which maybe supported if you use Windows Media Player to sync in MTP media player mode. However, Zune pass uses Zune DRM, not PlayForSure DRM. Zune DRM will only work on Microsoft Zune players and WP7 phones. Not to be confused with purchased songs in Zune. Purchased songs no longer have DRM in them.
Now CM7 is another story. I not sure if it even supports PlayForSure DRM at all.
Well I have the Nokia N8 and that can play Zune pass content when transferred via MTP.
So I guess the question is can we enable stock Android to mount as an MTP device?

Any app available that can mount AOSP builds as MTP?

So ive decided to stop buying cd`s as their taking up to much space and im left with the choice of downloading/streaming? zune music or buying actual music downloads mp3 style. i hear that if you buy a song or album from zune then you cant keep it? but can only stream it? is this right? im also worried about the streaming as in not being able to stream anywhere, especially if im abroad cos the cost is way to high. there are pros and cons. i considered this because i only have an 8gb wp7 device which of course isnt a lot. any ideas what the best route is?
I am from Canada, and therefore not able to get the Zune Pass, but I have read alot about it, and here is my understanding:
1) You are not streaming the music, but it is downloaded with some level of security built in so it expires when your Zune pass expires
2) You get 10 song downloads per month that you keep forever.
Do i need need to subscribe to Zune to be able to download the music? or can i buy without subscribing? i have a 2 year contract and doubt that i will go on another contract after this one so if i buy from zune will i lose all my music after this period?

If you want to download songs on Zune without buying them individually, you must subscribe to Zune pass. If you just want to buy individually, you do not need the subscription. Most (though not all) Zune songs are in mp3 format, and if you buy an mp3 song though Zune, there's no DRM. Not having DRM has the upside of being able to use those songs on any future devices, but the downside of being unable to recover the song if it gets deleted from both your computer and device.
Zune Pass is where the "you can't keep it" comes in. With Zune Pass you can download as many songs as you want and play them as much as you want, as long as you keep paying the $15 a month. To help out though, Zune Pass gives you 10 song credits a month to download up to 10 songs a month to keep. If you keep mp3 songs, then those are yours forever, just like if you bought them.
No matter whether you download through Zune on the phone or Zune on the PC, it will indicate whether or not the song you wish to buy is an mp3 file or not. If it does not say it's mp3, it's not mp3.
You can buy any track you want at any time. But I highly recommend the Zune Pass. You can stream/download (albeit protected mp3s that expire if your Zune Pass isn't active) all the music you want! Plus you get to keep 10 tracks a month for free and forever! The cost of the Zune Pass is taken care of just right there. Otherwise you'd spend a crap load of money and maybe only like less than half the songs. Why not try before you buy ;-) Plus Zune Pass offers a free 2 week trial. I'm loving Zune Pass!
Zune Pass is a subscription service. You pay a monthly fee and you get to listen to unlimited music available in Zune. You can download either via cell network or via your home PC Zune software. You don't own any of the music. The minute you stop your Zune subscription, your songs on your phone stop working.
Mp3 purchase is a different model. You pay for each song through some 3rd party service and you own the song that you can listen to them anytime anywhere. There is no monthly subscription fee. But you need to make sure your purchase is DRM-free. Otherwise, it won't work. I know MP3 purchased from Amazon.com is DRM free.

Zune mp3 purchase is DRM-free, as well.
Something to keep in mind is that DRM-locked Zune Pass songs are WMA and typically lower bit-rate than the DRM-free mp3s. I've never noticed a huge quality difference, though, but WMA doesn't tend to play nicely with Mac even though WP7 can.
Zune Pass is really awesome, and a pretty good deal. For US:
- if you pay in advance for 1 year, you pay for 10 months and get 2 months for free. That means 150 $/12 = 12.5 $ / month
- every month you get 10 song credits, that you can buy any songs you want (usually they are mp3). If you estimate each song about 1 $ each, that would make around 10 $. You need to make sure you don't forget about them and you spend them every month
So if you substract 12.5 - 10 (song credits) - that means for 2.5 $ / month you have access to millions of songs.
Zune Pass is also an amazing way to discover new music. I find it very useful that I can listen to entire albums before buying them, and in the end I think I saved money because I know exactly what I buy.
The Zune software also has a Smart DJ feature. You can start with a song, create a playlist, you can save it locally as a dynamic playlist and specify that you want it to be refresh every few days. Than you sync it to your phone So you always have new, fresh music with you.
And, you can use the Zune Pass on the Xbox as well
Anyways, you can always decide to buy songs without the Zune Pass. Regarding the pass, you can get the free trial and see if you like it.
amazon music store. DRM-Free and cheap ;D
I would so use Zune if i didn't have an unlimited gold account with mp3panda and i still had my zune hd but as it is i use them. Though if it was a choice of zune, itunes or amazon i would jump on zune so fast you wouldn't see it coming.
Here is my new issue with WP7....Google has listen, I believe iOS has another podcast streamer/updater. WHY IN THE WORLD CAN'T WE UPDATE OR STREAM PODCASTS IN ZUNE!!!!?!?!? The Zune suite is the main reason I went with WP7, this seems like such an easy feature to bundle in the OS.
thoughts?
They showed off podcast support in the music app at MIX, but you'll have to wait for mango before you get it. I was debating returning to android but after seeing the future of WP7 at MIX, I'm sticking with WP7.
I subscribe to several (video) podcasts (i.e. College Humor) in the Zune software on my desktop and then wirelessly update them each night. It would be nice if I could manage them from the phone directly, but it works well enough syncing to my home computer.
Zune software / Marketplace / Podcasts....
I have an Arrive, but I'm pretty sure that doesn't matter.
Just wait until Mango... Along with better podcast support, Mango will be bringing a lot of features to Windows Phone 7.
Here is a question that's been on my mind. With WP8 dropping Zune and moving to XboX Music will us 7.8 users be stuck with Zune? Will we get XboX Music or some lame MP3 player? I know people say that all XboX Music is a re-branding of Zune but that is not so because XboX Music and the App Store will be seprate from eachother wheres Zune is intergated.I would like to hear comments, ideas and concepts weather possotive or negative.:good:
Since 7.8 is kind of a major upgrade, that is UI changes and hopefully includes a bit of WP8 features, I'd say there's a fat chance on this one since Microsoft wants a streamlined service across their devices.
I would be quite shocked if Xbox Music and Zune Pass weren't the same on the back end. Zune (marketplace and pass) have existed since well before the WP7 Marketplace, or even before the Zune HD app "store". It is "integrated" into Marketplace on the phone only in the sense that the same UI is used to access both of them, but that doesn't really mean much - for example, near-identical UIs are used for Facebook messaging and SMS. As for authentication, all three of Zune services, Xbox services, and WP7 Marketplace are all tied to the same identifier: your Gamertag (Zune used to call it a Zune Tag, but it was just another name for the same thing). There's no reason to expect rebranding from Zune to Xbox is going to change anything; they'e already the same on the back end!
