L2TP/IPSec VPN doesn't work in the 5.2.1413 (Build 17913) build? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

I managed to get the L2TP/IPSec VPN working in the previous mUn ROM (5.2.968) - not fantastic as it would only work following a soft reset, however this was better than nothing. Which unfortunately is what I have now. I have the same setup I had in the previous ROM I built - Digital Certificates etc, however the Wizard doesn't even attempt to connect, even following a soft reset.
I noticed in the ROM kitchen the 'Enterprise' files in the 5.2.1413 build are files, whilst in the 5.2.968 they are packages. Also the .DSM files in the Enterprise_Lang_0409 & Enterprise_Lang_0409_DPI_96 folders are different sizes between the two builds, however the single .RGU file in the Enterprise directory is the same.
Would it be safe to replace the four Enterprise folders in the 5.2.1413 build with the ones from the 5.2.968 build and rebuild the ROM?
Any body else using L2TP/IPSec sucessfully?
Thanks
Andy

Well the answer to whether I can just replace the four Enterprise folders in the 5.2.1413 release with those from the 5.2.968 release is no..... It just hangs at the third boot screen following the flash.
B0ll0x, I'm gonna have to revert to the 5.2.968 release for the time being
Andy

Sorry my mistake, it doesn't work with the 5.2.968 ROM neither - same issue as the 5.2.1413, it does in fact only work with the original 5.2.318 ROM from Faria......
EDIT: ..... and no you can't just copy the Enterprise files from the 5.2.318 build into the 5.2.1413 build and rebuild the ROM.....
Andy

I give in...........
OK I give in...........
I have spent most of the day trying to get L2TP/IPSec working in either of the two mUn ROMs (5.2.968 & 5.2.1413) and it does not work. This is a real letdown for me since this is one tool that is very handy. I suppose this is what you get when you use hacked ROMs from other devices
I have extracted all the files from the HTC Wing ROM that was posted in a previous thread (thanks to the Core kitchen tools) and even tried the Enterprise files from this but it still won't work. My suspicion now is that there is something else not right; maybe a driver specific issue with the Wizard. However I have reached my own knowlege limits here.....
I think I have flashed my Wizard about 15 times today and enrolled for a new Certificate from our CA after each re-flash..... luckily this is all in a test environment and I have control of the CA. I have contacted uses of other HTC devices running WM6 (Hermes in particular) and these don't suffer from this issue running the same base version (5.2.1413).
I don't want to move back to Faria's 5.2.318 ROM as this is now so old (in relative terms...) but I need L2TP/IPSec and this appears to be my only option.
If anyone has any suggestions then please let me know. Am I the only person who uses L2TP/IPSec VPN on the Wizard? surely not?
Thanks
Andy
O

OK, I didn't quite give in....
This was really getting to me so I started looking at this again today.......
I have a spare Wizard so took my main one (with ROM 5.2.1413) and compared the registry settings with my spare now loaded up with ROM 5.2.318. They are by default exactly the same in the IPSec & L2TP settings (HKLM\Comm\IPSec, HKLM\Comm\L2TP & HKLM\Comm\L2TP1), however once you have created the VPN entry on the 5.2.318 Wizard and connected it once an additional key is created 'HKLM\Comm\L2TP Line 0'. In here is another key '\Parms' and then again another '\TcpIp'. In this final key there are values for the IP address, mask etc.
Now currently on my main Wizard I have the Enterprise files from the 5.2.318 ROM (it just happens that is how I left it yesterday). Now if I create the registry keys but leave out all the TcpIp stuff it works........ Or at least it has worked a couple of times. I think I will rebuild my test Wizard with the original Enterprise files but with an additional Reg file to see if this works....
Things are looking up
Andy

Help, don't know which IPSec files I now have.....
I now have the L2TP/IPSec VPN working in my 5.2.1413 ROM, however looking at the various files provided by the Enterprise package I don't know where these are from...........
I don't know what I have done but the files that are now in the ROM that is working aren't the same as any I have on my PC in the various kitchen/dump directories. Is there anyway I can extract these from the ROM directly? I have tried using total commander but it won't let me copy files that are in ROM.
There are five files in total (ipsec.dll, ipsecsvc.dll, l2tp.dll, scard.dll & winscard.dll), I have checked and these are all slightly smaller than those in Faria's 'DEV_WIZcrossbow CLEAN-V2' ROM kitchen and even smaller than those in the 5.2.1413 ROM kitchen I have. I really don't know what I have done here......
Can anyone help?
Thanks
Andy

is the service or process still running? I just tried copying ipsec.dll to my sd card using total commander and it copied without issue. I don't use ipsec or l2tp with my phone, but i am interested in the solution. I can try the other files as well if you want me to.

I have just soft reset the device in case there was anything running. If I try to copy any of the files from \Windows to my SD card Total Commander throws a dialogue box up saying 'Target file exists, overwrite?'. If I say yes it says 'Cannot copy or move file!' I have tried a different .dll file and this copied OK. I think it has something to do with the files having the 'Hidden' attribute as that is the only difference I can see.
Plus, after a soft reset it now won't connect again
Andy

what size are each of the files?

notyourdaddy said:

ipsec.dll - 60936 bytes
ipsecsvc.dll -263623 bytes
l2tp.dll - 53464 bytes
scard.dll - 35524 bytes
winscard.dll - 16932 bytes
I think the last two don't matter as these are to do with smartcards. To be honest though this has not worked since I soft reset the wizard a few hours ago so getting these files is probably not going to help.
This is really pi$$ing me off as I can't understand why this worked at all (if only briefly). Although not something I would use everyday having the ability to connect to my network via VPN at a Wireless hotspot is an essential requirement for me. I don't know what else to try......
Andy

Right, OK it's still not worked since I soft reset this yesterday. Nothing has changed on my 'live' Wizard so I'll re-load 5.2.318 on my 'test' Wizard and get comparing again
Anyway I have just noticed something a bit weird when I have VoIP enabled on my 'live' Wizard. For example I connect my Wizard to the Wireless network and VoIP is configured to use it if it is available, so I see 'BT Broadband Voice: Selected' on my Today screen. Now if I attempt to connect the VPN there is a flash of the Telephone signal strength icon between the Wireless & Speaker icons at the top right of the screen and then VoIP gets disabled, I get a brief flash of 'connecting to VPN' then the 'cannot connect' dialogue box appears. What's weird is the VoIP getting disable (or at least shows 'No Service').
Has anyone seen this behaviour with any other network applications - i.e. VoIP dropping when they are launched?
Andy

After days of testing with alternative Enterprise files/re-flashing my Test Wizard I simply cannot repeat the sucess I briefly had with L2TP/IPSec VPN with the 5.2.1413 ROM.
If anyone on here can help me there is beer in it for you.
Anyone?
Andy

Last straw?
Can anyone on here help me? I can't be the only Wizard user who wants to use L2TP/IPSec VPN with Windows Mobile 6?
I have tried now for days (with very little support) and cannot get this to work. I have reverted my 'test' Wizard back to the final official QTEK 9100 WM5 release (9100rom with push mail_ship.exe) and L2TP/IPSec works flawlessly over wireless. I have attempted to extract the enterprise files from this ROM and put them in the 5.2.1413 ROM but I still get the same results. Since this feature has been around since the Wizard was released I would have thought it would be relatively easy to get working, however my thoughts are being proven wrong.
I was expecting the hardcore guys on here to solve this (major?) issue very quickly; it doesn't look like they can So the Wizard is probably going to have to be replaced with a device that does work, which is a shame really since everything else is good. I mean what other device has so much user-based support (except probably PC's and the Rover V8 engine?).
If anyone can help me then please post on here or PM me
Thanks
Andy

Even with Faria's ROM it only works once following a soft-reset. If I can get it working I would like it working in the latest (don't we all?).
Andy

I have managed to get a bit further but I am experiencing some weird behaviour, can anyone explain it?
OK I will describe what my current setup is and what is happening, its really weird, however it smells of some initialisation issue
Rebuilt the 5.2.1413 base ROM but removed the Enterprise files (4 directories) and replaced them with the 4 Enterprise directories from the 'Official WM6' ROM posted in the thread started by InGeNeTiCs (after extracting them etc). Flashed Wizard OK and go through initial setup. Now I connect to my Wireless network and save the profile, I then add a VPN connection on the Wizard that connects to my VPN router. If I attempt to connect it fails as before. Now if I disable the Wireless and soft reset the Wizard, then as soon as it has started whilst Battery Status is showing something like 12MB of Program Memory, I connect the Wireless and then attempt to connect the VPN it works. From this point on I can disconnect the VPN, reconnect, disconnect the Wireless, reconnect etc and it works every time
If I disconnect the wireless and soft reset again but this time wait until Battery Status is showing 28MB of Program Memory, then connect the wireless and then attempt to connect the VPN it fails and will never work again unless it is soft-reset and everything is started quickly I have tested this several times now and the behaviour is consistent.
If I try the same with the Enterprise files that came natively with the 5.2.1413 ROM it doesn't work. I am sure (although I haven't tested it) that if I used the Enterprise files from Farias 5.2.318 ROM I would see the same behaviour as I am seeing now with the files from the 'Official WM6' ROM - i.e. it working if I use this 'bodge'.
This smells to me like some initialisation issue at bootup that I am somehow managing to get around by attempting to start the VPN whilst the Wizard isn't fully initialised?
At least now I have some workaround, not perfect but a workaround none the less.
Does anyone know what process at boot up is likely to cause this behaviour? And more importantly how to fix it?
Thanks
Andy

Know issues and recommendations;
No performance tweaks needed in my opinion
I recommend over clocking the rom [battery-status] to 247 MHz instead of applying performance tweaks ,performance tweaks take away ram…….were over clocking comes at very little loss of battery especially if you use the auto scale function.
THIS rom has no parts from any current wm6 rom, this is a real WWE wizard rom ,all the parts needed to make it as a full rom were sourced from my 3.3.
Battery status cannot be configured from today options control panel…….but you can configure it by pressing and holding the battery icon in battery-status today plug in.
the rom may be bit slower because i did not applied any performance tweaks....plus the rom is fully loaded so we cant compare to other roms.....i mean this roms has everything working.....its like comparing a loaded truck to an empty one..
the device may crash when it reboots for the first time at the welcome screen if you don't tap it straight away....just reset the device with the stylus and it will be fine. this is because there is apps loading in the background.
a vanilha version will be released soon.
many thanks to mamaich BEPE AND dr.P FOR ALL THE Support and all the authors/xda of the freware apps.... a specialy.....my wife that lend her wizard to me in order to finish this rom,and for putting up with the many hours i ignored her.....

The ROM image doesn't really care whether you're using Windows XP or Windows Vista. Without knowing the details, I'm guessing that the problems you're having have to do with the new security "features" of Windows Vista.
What you'll need to do is once you've downloaded the ROM image to a location on your local hard drive, right-click on the file and select "Run as Administrator". You will be prompted to "Allow" or "Cancel", select "Allow" and you should be OK from that point forward.

Not really, the problem I had was , it started to upgrade and when the phone restarted and the rainbow appeared the connection was lost between PC and phone.
I hope I was able to explain it correctly.

The issue you are havings is a known issue. The flash utility looks for ActiveSync, and since Vista does not use ActiveSync but its own mess, you wont be able to flash with Vista.
Can anyone provide a mirror link?
Ok before Faria gets slammed with posts about the flash freezing at 99%.... this is normal. All ROM's (Even releases by HTC or your carrier) have a point when it looks frozen but its not.
Also one thing I have seen is that people expect these things to be perfect OOB (out of box), this is never the case. There will always be a few little kinks and if you read the forum you will either find the answer in this post or another. So read before you post.
On another note, faria I love this release. So far no issues seen, but i will run the phone hardcore as i usually do to see if there are any issues. Thanks again for all your hardwork in putting this release out.
Some people who where trying to update to WM6 on Smartphones like Dash had a problem with "Invalid Code ID"... (me as well).
The procedure to solve the prob was to use the "Unlocker" program provided by some companies, disconnect cable when it asked for a file, close the program and continue to flash with "modded files" (the modded files were specific to the "vendor ID" prob).
Whe you run the unlocker, ActiveSync disconnects, at least looks so.
In this case my "noobish" mind could think the unlocker is actually handling by itself the connection... In this case, using this procedure, it should be possible to run the upgrade even from Vista.
On the other hand, the unlocker might just disconnect ActiveSync but still be using MS drivers, which are probably different in Vista.
Maybe I'm not used to think and I'm just saying nonsense.

Restore Internet Calling in Faria's WM6 ROM?

I have been attempting to add Interenet Calling to Faria's WM6 ROM by adding the necessary files and registry changes and re-cooking the ROM but I am getting nowhere fast. I have managed to add some files to the original ROM, make a couple of registry changes fine and change some settings in the initflashfiles.dat file to remove some shortcuts I don't want and I can get this to work fine, however re-adding the IP Phone stuff is a bit more of a task.......
I have extracted the files (or modules) from the MB ROM and added the regsistry changes and the ROM cooks just fine. When I flash the Wizard though it completes sucessfully and then reboots. I get the 1st splash screen but then when the 2nd splashscreen should appear I get a white screen. The Wizard is working as I can hear the bleep when it asks you to 'tap the screen to set up the device'. It also powers on and off OK, but I only ever get this white screen.
I have tried this about 4 times now and I am convinced the registry changes and required files are correct, but each time I get this white screen. Any ideas?

Already read it..... I can get Internet Calling back if I launch the VoIP.CAB that is included in that thread after installation, however I want these to be integrated into the ROM like they were originally (Faria has removed them). As I said I have had some sucess with adding other files and other registry changes it is just this bit that I am stuck on.
I did manage to get a bit further but ended up with a corrupt Today screen, no idea what happened there though
Andy
What are you stuck on?... you said you didn't have it, but now you said you can get internet calling... what exactly are you trying to do?
Faria has said that his rom takes up almost the entire space alotted. Have you tried removing some files from the rom to clear up room for the VoIP files?

I want to restore the Internet Calling option in Faria's WM6 ROM - pretty simple to understand really
I can add it manually via the VoIP.cab file but this obviously takes up RAM and can be removed via 'Remove Programs'. I would like to add the files that are missing and make the necessary registry changes then re-cook the ROM. I would prefer to keep Faria's base ROM.
I haven't tried removing anything from Faria's ROM so far, I didn't realise it was near the limit - I thought we had 128MB to play with on the Wizard, are we near that already?
Andy
Listen.. that cab only does registry fixes and puts in the NECESSARY files for the current voip functionality. it does not install anything that is not needed. Extract the cab and look at the xml file. it will tell you exactly what it does...Pretty simple concept

Yep, already done that, hence my original post.....
I have added the necessary registry changes/additions and proof-read them several times, however once the ROM is cooked and installed the thing reboots, I get the 1st splash screen OK, then the white screen when the 2nd splash screen should appear and that's it.
I will have a look at how bloated the DUMP directory is with the additional files in there and see if I am going over 128MB.
Andy
The DUMP folder is apparently 122MB (128,512,401 Bytes) but is taking up 132MB (139,141,120) on the disk on my PC. Does anyone know if this is too big? If it is what is safe to remove?
Thanks
Andy
Done it.......
If anyone is interested I managed to get Internet Calling back into Faria's ROM.....
What I did originally was correct, however the file (or modules) that are needed for Internet Calling total about 3.5MB, which I think was slightly too much and would make the ROM bigger than 128MB (I think Faria must have realised this when developing his ROM and removed them to save space). I have been through the installed applications and files and have removed some stuff that I don't use. I then re-built the ROM and low and behold it worked first time and Internet Calling is now an option...
It still doesn't work however but that is just because it needs a provisioning XML file from a provider. Hopefully when WM6 devices appear we will be able to extract a provisioning XML file and dig deeper........
And no, the ROM is not available since this is Faria's work and not mine.
Andy
Nice,
I’m new to this and the only thing that I need from WM6 is the “Internet Calling”
I have no ides how to make the voip work. But I fond this at Microsoft.

I really would like to test this with my “asterisk server” (http://www.asterisk.org/)
/joad
Where did you find the "Internet Calling total about 3.5MB" module?
Or maby you have changed your mind and feel like chairing your ”build” of WM6

You need to add the following files into the ROM (the 1st 3 are actually modules and are in directories with the same name):
dnsapi.dll
rtcdll.dll
voipphonecanvas.dll
ipdialplan.xml
ringback.wma
You also need to add the registry entries to the default.hv and user.hv that are contained in the '_setup.xml' file from the VoIP.CAB file (or extract them from another ROM that already contains Internet Calling).

Joad,
I agree with you. The 3.5 Mb footprint is inflated.
It's only 1.75 MB (remember if you are using recmod when you are unpacking the ROM with viewimgfs, you have two copies of the files that are stored as modules: the module version and a file copy!.
--eluth.
eluth, I knew that somebody out there would have done the right job. Congratulation! Would you mind making your rom available to us?
Thank you

Pleaaaaaaaaaaaaase !!!!!!
There are so many people wanting to do this now - and I have a MAJOR need for this on a Hermes -- I have a solid SIP provider and can get to it with my other apps but integration I can't test ---
I am trying soooo hard to pin this down. I have not found a single ROM yet that has the "complete" add-in of what you mention here.
It would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

I am trying soooo hard to pin this down. I have not found a single ROM yet that has the "complete" add-in of what you mention here.
It would be GREATLY APPRECIATED.

This .CAB worked on my Wizard with Faria's WM6 real thing ROM that had the VoIP stuff removed:

I then added the files and registry settings back and re-cooked the ROM.

WM6 Windows Update - files & settings required?

Now I know Windows Update on WM6 doesn't work for the Wizard - It connects to the m$ update site but doesn't find any updates. I tested this previously with the MB ROM and used a sniffer to see what was going on and it does indeed connect to the windows update site using HTTP.
In Faria's WM6 ROM he has removed Windows Update by physically removing some files from the ROM and deleting some registry settings as well as commenting out a line in the 'initflashfiles.dat' file. I have attempted to re-add Windows Update to his ROM with some sucess, however I am not quite there yet....
I have restored 'autoupdate.exe' and 'AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui' as well as a registry setting [HKLM\System\Autoupdate] and it's settings and uncommented the line in the 'initflashfiles.dat' file to add the shortcut back. Now Windows Update is available and when I open it it opens OK but fails to connect when I select update now. It then sort of hangs and can only be closed using Task Manager or similar.
Are there any other files or settings that need restoring to get this back. I understand it doesn't work but my curiosity is getting the better of me
Thanks
Andy
I thought I read (maybe here) that when someone did the update, they actually had a theme file that was available and it downloaded that.
No packets sent?
I have been playing around with the Windows Update application and it starts fine. If I select 'Check Now' it immediately comes back with the Error screen telling me 'connection to update server was not available....'. If I click OK and then attempt to end the application it just stays on the screen and the only way to stop it is to use Task Manager and terminate the process
I have also put a sniffer on the port my Wireless AP connects to and cannot see the Wizard transmit anything when I click select 'Update Now' (I have verified I can access the internet with IE and I can see this OK with the sniffer).
Does anyone know what I am missing to at least get the Autoupdate.exe application to attempt to connect as it did with the MB ROM?
Thanks
Andy
Anyone
Can I bump this up as I want to get this working and re-added to my ROM (I know it doesn't actually work but I would like the functionality restored anyway).
I have restored the files:
autoupdate.lnk
autoupdate.exe
AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui
Added the registry settings:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\Autoupdate]
"DetectionCookie"="0"
"IntervalEndTime"=dword:f0
"IntervalStartTime"=dword:3c
"OmaDmSessionTimeout"=dword:258
"NextRunNormalInterval"=dword:93a80
"Automatic"=dword:0
"OTA"=dword:0
And restored the line to the initflashfiles.dat:
Directory("\Windows\Start Menu\Programs"):-File("Windows Update.lnk","\Windows\autoupdate.lnk")
There must be something else I am missing as it never attempts to connect and hangs when trying to exit the application. I restored the files from the MB ROM to Faria's ROM as he didn't include the originals.
Thanks
Andy
I would very cautious about re-adding windows update to a beta evaluation ROM (all our WM6 roms are!!!!).
It will do no good, only harm, I think, since Windows Update as well as a few other components in these beta WM6 are actually there only to call home and manage the beta evaluation.
My position of this is that you want to remove as much as possible all these pieces of software, essentially to avoid the call-home feature and the ROM expiration process, without breaking the ROM, of course.
So, I recomment to leave Windows Update out, SQM and other modules, ceipui, the remote provisioning mechanisms, etc. I've already talked about this in diffent threads, but I'll try to post a summary of my findings in the short future.
Regards,
--eluth.
I understand and accept the implications but I would prefer it if this was restored to my ROM.
I am just after some help as to what I am missing to restore this functionality
I have listed what files and settings I have restored but AutoUpdate is obviously missing something based on it's behaviour.
Anyone?
Anyone?
Anyone know what I am missing? Surely some of the cookers on here who have removed the Windows Update from their ROMs know what they removed?
That's all I am after; not too big a task I assume?
Andy
ADB100,
I could not tell you what is missing, but I do know that it is enabled in mUn's ROM. Because I did the same as you. Hooked it up to a sniffer and looked at the packet exchange between my Wizard and the MS update site..

It's enabled in the original Orwells, the MB Edition, mUn's and Faria's Vanilla WM6.
However I still can't find what I am missing to get it back in my re-heat of Faria's latest 'Real Thing'.....
Andy
you are missing SQM .
ps;
there is WM6 ROM for a windows ppc that has time bomb....plus microsoft can expire your rom by update if they want.... the update feature uses .pkg and this settings will stay after hard reset.... so they can use it for any means, and so can anyone that can compile 1 of those packages. just to let you know.

All the SQM files are present and the SQM settings in the registry are identical
What else could be missing?
Also, Which rom as the timebomb and how do we find it?
hi, anibody have this files:
autoupdate.exe' and 'AutoUpdateRes_wpc.exe.0409.mui'?
Thanks
I don't have it handy, but go find the original Ingenetics dump that was posted here (do a search) and I know it has those files in it.
Andy,
The original dump by Ingenetics was pulled a few days after he posted it. But I think this link has it. Good luck on your quest.

Almost all the latest version wm6 custom builds have a separate "Vanilla Rom" for kitchens and cooking. It's not possible to have original official Microsoft Wm6 Base Rom for download. The Base Roms available are all ported from official Roms of carrier's and vendors.
Besides, either install WinXP or partition and 'Dual Boot' WinXP on the same PC and HD.
how can i get these roms?
how can i get these roms i mean to fit into the wizard help me make one plz
See my signature.
I'm running it on T-Mobile, but its generic - not built specifically for that carrier, and should work on any CID-unlocked Wizard.
Its fast, stable, and works.
Would you be willing to give a few details?
This sounds interesting. Would you be willing to give a few essential details: what app's are built-in, the amount of memory left, OS version?...
Thanks, man.

Sure... base is 5.2.1933; I'm running Radio 2.25.11, but that is NOT in the ROM.
Builtin:
Standard games
Esmertec Java
Adobe Reader
Camera
Comm Manager (10 button)
Internet Sharing AND DUN
Standard WM6 VOIP
SmartSkey
Other standard utilities (e.g. Windows Media, etc)
Advanced Config 1.0 (0.9 blows up with enhanced comm managers)
Windows CE Update (never seen anything yet, but the tool is there)
Enhanced WM6 Task Manager
Total Commander
OXios CloseApps/Hibernate
ClearTemp
Enhanced Contact Manager
MMS
Its a fairly vanilla ROM.
I have a lot of stuff I load from CABs as well, including HTC Home, BatteryTool, VoiceCommand, TomTom6, etc.
There's almost no storage memory used in the base load; I've got some stuff in use now as I have a bunch of CAB-loaded (and PC-loaded) stuff.
The only "bugs" I am aware of is that I've got issues with the MMS tool (configuring it - if I load the T-Mo CAB for MMS it works but that screws up connections when on sync) and during a call "directory info" isn't on the call status screen. The latter I'm not certain of the cause of, but I'm looking for a fix for that.
The really cool change I've noted is that it is 100% reliable at "ringing through" calls while data is being run. Not just with GPRS up, but with actual data transfers underway. I can be watching ORB'd TV and if someone calls the phone rings - every time. This has never, never worked before on any of the other ROMs I've used.
In addition the battery life is amazing. I've never left the phone with WiFi enabled unless in active use because it used to EAT battery power. With this ROM consumption is easily 30% better than with the others I've run. Not sure why the huge difference, but it is major - I used to run the battery basically flat in an hour watching ORB over EDGE, now I get nearly double that without a sweat. Its a BIG difference.
I'm on T-Mobile; YMMV.
I've played with a LOT of the different builds on here and all have been incredibly frustrating to one degree or another. This is the first WM6 load I've had on my Wizard that I actually LIKE.
I can build with other apps "builtin" but in general there's not THAT much that I want that's not in there or that I don't have as a CAB on my storage card, so loading from a CAB is pretty quick and painless anyway, since its only done once.
its a munn tho i dont want pplz looking at the app data saying mun
Thank you
Thank you. This sounds great - I'm going to try it. Have been running an NTS ROM for a long time now (similar idea), perhaps it's time to try a new one...

Cool, i like your description for this ROM, i JUST flashed my first wizard for the first time up to the recommended T-mobile 2.26 and was looking for something to replace it, wm6 preferred, but stable, fast, and not bloated. I will be trying this out, for wizard G3's right?
got it running, runs pretty good. two problems:
Pocket office is broken.
I can't get the task thing where I supposedly hold down the X to exit a program completely to work, what gives?
I'll look at office.... I have a second copy of that package - let me see what's up with that.
The "Hold X" thing is BS. Smarskey is in this load; hold the right soft key ("Contacts" at the top screen, but anywhere) to close a program instead of minimizing it. That's what I've used since WM5 and I VASTLY prefer it to the other hacks.
Let me play with this some and I'll post something here.
I have the Office problem and the "no call detail during a call" problems resolved; working to verify that all the other packages don't interact badly with the fixes and then will post here with a new load.
It may take me a day or two to go through all my regression testing.
OK, it appears to be fixed up. New load available on my Signature and I've started a thread for it.
There are a few more tools in this one.
I just want to note that I ended up having to flash to TNT 1933 during thanksgiving week (was in D.C. as well on vaca) because i found the ROM to be really unstable. Had to do a lot of soft resets, hard reset once, nowhere near as much as this TNT rom, but the TNT isn't perfect either.
I did like the ROM, but the stability wasn't there for me for somereason. Right now i'm having an issue with not getting voicemail notifications :/
I used Genesis3's baserom and made it my own with the proper props to him in my thread. he fixed the 1933 build and i just added ****

Balderdash! See here for the MS base ROM for the Wizard. This was apparently a late development ROM used on the Wizard for development purposes (internally called "Dogfood"). You'll have to extract it in HyperCore Kitchen. It's definitely the only MS base ROM ever made for the Wizard. I've made some minor changes to make it a bit more usable in base form, but everything else is the same.

install epocrates on WM 6.5; now w/ workaround solution

has anyone managed to get epocrates installed and working on a WM 6.5 rom?
or is there someway to resize Thomson's Clinical Xpert for VGA screens?
I've recently flashed the stock ATT fuze rom to one of Da_G's WM 6.5 roms. It's fast, stable, and has great battery life (currently sitting on my desk after 26 hrs+ w/ maybe 10% remaining, which is a tremendous improvement from the <12 hrs i was getting). Everything is fine and dandy, but the most important software for me does not work.
Epocrates installs but does not perform the initial autoupdate. it simply stalls at the update screen. I've tried both the wireless installation and desktop installation and both do not work. Speaking to their tech support, I've found that WM 6.5 is currently unsupported. Anyone get this working on a WM 6.5 rom?
In the meantime, i've installed Thomson's Clinical Xpert, but it's interface was probably designed for QVGA screens so the drop-down menus are not navigable on my VGA device. how can i go about resizing the application for a VGA screen (either through modification of the CAB file or if there is any application that can alter the resolution/stretch it)?
thanks.
workaround in this post below
Having the exact same issue- any help will definitely be appreciated. I love the new 6.5 interface and would prefer not to go back to 6.1 unless absolutely necessary
Same here. I just spent an hour trying to load Epocrates until I found this thread. I like the WinMo 6.5 much better than 6.1, but unless someone can find a workaround I guess I will have to revert.

Same here. However, I did revert back to 6.1, still no luck on installing Epocrates. Even disabled the Microsoft encryption setting. Still no go.
what wm6.5 build is everyone using? i've so far only tried it on Da_G's 21198.
i'm really surprised that epocrates won't install on wm6.5 as i don't think very much has changed in the architecture from 6.1. the issue w/ epocrates is that it installs, but hangs during the initial autoupdate. the actual application is installed and can be opened briefly (i can see the the on top etc.), but the data itself is not there b/c it cannot be synced. when trying to install via the windows desktop installer, the autoupdate progress bar pops up and the download starts, but quits with an error about the autoupdater conduit.
if the conduit can be fixed/tweaked perhaps epocrates will work? has anyone tried moving files from a working 6.1 installation to an aborted install on wm6.5? i'd try to do it, but right now i don't have the time to rebuild my wm6.5 setup, which is also why i haven't flashed to one of the newer 6.5 builds.
for the time being i'm using Thomson Clinical Xpert, but its UI makes the application barely usable on my Fuze.

It's same with me. I reverted to 6.1 bcos of epocrates and UpToDate. epocrates wont install as e'one here said. UpToDate installs and runs but cant display the final pages. It seems to use the IE and the pages are stored inside .jar files. somehow it cant go inside the .jar files to display the html files. It says the pages are not available.
I hope these issues will be solved soon.
BTW, I'm using TESS Premium 4.3 by Aman in my Elf.
Same
Wow same here, that's incredibly irritating
i finally had some free time to tinker this weekend and i've got epocrates running on wm 6.5!
following my previous hypothesis, i flashed to an old 6.1 rom and installed epocrates and performed an update. then i copied the "essentials" folder from "Program Files" to my sd card. i then flashed to wm 6.5 (da_g's 21501 beta 4 kitchen) and installed epocrates. as usual, it could not perform the initial autoupdate. instead, i closed the update application, deleted the existing Essentials folder, and copied the Essentials folder from my sd card that was from the intial 6.1 installation to Program Files. epocrates now works! i didn't bother with any of the add-on components/programs as i mainly need access to Rx, Sx, Dx, and labs tabs. of course, you likely will not be able to update epocrates from wm 6.5 as the crux of the problem is the autoupdater module.
Post perhaps?
Hey just wanted to add my 2 cents saying I'm having the same problem. I'm using HTC fuze with Mystic ROM by vRC1.0 based on Da_G's 21500. It's also a windows mobile 6.5 ROM.
Anyhow I was wondering if someone could post a zipped version of the essentials folder that works, so I don't have to reflash my ROM twice.
anyone has idea about UpToDate thing in WM6.5. Eventhough there is a workaround for Epocrates, I'm still stuck with 6.1 cos of UpToDate. Any input/suggestions wud be highly appreciated.
EDIT: I found about UpToDate in this forum http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=499741 but u hav to cook into ur own rom... too bad ..

i have an archive of the folder and i'd upload it, but i think it contains personal information. just flash 6.1 the next time you get around to flashing an upgraded 6.5 rom.

+1 for me too... I too would prefer not having to reflash again.
My Essentials folder won't be the same as yours. It will have my preferred insurance plans, for one thing.
Clearly, this hack allows ePocrates to run. However, it doesn't address the lack of updating, which is really one of the important features of ePocrates.
Since ePocrates is the primary reason I carry a smartphone device instead of a plain phone, I'll be sticking with a 6.1 ROM for now.
epocrates and active sync
I was wondering if anyone using the work around has been able to use active sync to sync with their computer. Does it break if epocrates tries to auto-update that way through the active sync? Is there a way to turn off the epocrates auto-updater so you can active sync?
I was able to use the work around without flashing my ROM. If you still have an old phone, you can have epocrates with Windows Mobile 6.1 on THAT phone, move the essentials to the storage card. Then install epocrates on your 6.5 device with the storage card in, and it works perfectly fine for me.
But now I'm afraid to sync my phone with my computer. I NEED epocrates to function at work. I want to be able to sync as that's one of the main benefits of a windows mobile phone, but keeping epocrates has to be priority one for me.
BTW, I checked with epocrates support, and they said they intend to support 6.5; they just don't know when.
Working now!
its now working officially with wm 6.5
greets,
A couple of days ago I installed the epocrates Rx on my brand new HTC HD2 (windows mobile 6.5) thru the standard installation procedure, and thought everything was running ok, until today that I just realized it doesn't support scrolling (I have to open the keyboard and use the arrow keys -extremely cumbersome!).
Then I searched on the Epocrates site for support and found this:
Question
Does Epocrates support Windows Mobile 6.5?
Answer
Epocrates does indeed support Windows Mobile 6.5.
While installation through a computer should be in essence the same as installing to a Windows Mobile 6.1 and older device, installing directly to a wireless Windows Mobile 6.5 device is a bit different.
Open Internet Explorer on your Windows Mobile 6.5 handheld and navigate to the following web address.
http://get.epocrates.com/?action=all
Please note that "www." is not part of the above web address.
Select the "Install Now" button for "Windows Mobile 5 and later."
Please take note of where Internet Explorer prompts use to save the Epocrates installer file (Main Memory or Expansion card). It is called:
OTAUpgraderSigned.exe
Open File Explorer on your handheld and navigate to My Device, My Documents. You should see the "OTAUpgraderSigned.exe" file there. Tap on it to begin the install process.
Should you encounter difficulties, please contact Epocrates support.
Don't know if anyone already tried the above, if so, please give some feedback. Does it work?
Anyway, I'll probably give it a try later in the day. Let's see what happens.
I have tried as Lovanova tells in his messagge but it still does not work scrolling in my HTC HD2.
Sorry to tell that this way described by epocrates support doesnt work in HD2.
hmm, you re right.
Scrolling does not work on HD2.
Damn!
They could at least update their product flag ship as so little that it doesnt look like MS-Dos-crap ... they ve got good looking apps on the iphone with nice fingerscrolling ...
its so ridicilous
