Cookbook needed - ROM Cooking for Idiots - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario ROM Development

Alright maybe the term Idiots is not correct - some of us like me don't have time to troll though every thread/post and pick out all the details so I have a request for some kind hearted knowledgeable person.
What's needed is a document (not a bunch of posts) that details how to cook a ROM step by step inlcuding pictures, how to add programs, remove programs, update the registry, links to things needed like a vanilla rom, patches to problems, enhancements, etc.
Well that's my wishful thinking and hoping someone will step up to the challenge to make life much easier for many of us.

~Have you not looked around, you have two kitchens for roms, and both have good, Step by step guilds!!!
Look at my sig for one!

Yes I have
I have looked around and as you read through the post there seem to be many pieces that are missing and information that has to be dug out of the individual posts and other threads to get a complete picuture. It would just be nice to have it all in one place/document.

Have you read the PDF doc in Funman's sig??? That has exactly what you are looking for. Nothing bad, but if you can't follow that guide, you aren't ready to be cooking. Its step by step, what tools to use, etc.

Thanks!
Ok, maybe the term idiot does apply, somehow I missed the PDF and have only been looking though post. Thanks!
If gets difficult sometimes when you have limited time and have to read through hundreds of post.

*** Ideas For A More Useful Forum ***

What I mean is a general problem of this forum: There loads of good tools, ROMs, tweaks etc but most of you don´t spend enough time to explain what is what.
If you provide such a huge mass of information like in this forum its just impossible for new users to sort out whats good, whats bad, whats new, what can I use.....And DO NOT tell me to use the search-function
For example: I come to the Polaris upgrading thread, I´m looking for a fast ROM. Actually I use bepe 0.67, but I wanna try some others. So lets have a look...Hmm, "Vega R3", "Diamond R4", "PhamQuang"..you see, lots of ROMs.
BUT: I want to know which language it is (I think its something like WWE...what is WWE?? just a joke, I know what it means..), is radio included (I normally expect that..), what have I to watch out for when flashing it & how can I flash it (this is often included, but again, very slangy explained) etc etc etc !
In other words: Many infos are provided. But questions and answers from the rest od the thread could be added to the first/second/third post so people dont have to search for hours (yes, i tried for hours !!!!)
What to do ??
There should be some sort of template for everyone posting a new tool, ROM etc.
Must-haves of a post:
** What is it? What can I do with it? What do I need??
** What language is it
** changelog (in 90% cases included)
** links for good explanations (what is... a ROM, radio, hard-spl, WWE etc)
!!!!! Please, just make one standard thread for such infos; one single, long post, explaining "xda-developers"-language
** Links to other websites/downloads that are useful
Such questions should be summarized for each device and PLEASE write in plain english language, for everybody around the world !
And please, dont post links to threads which arent up to date or are not as userfriendly as they should be!
Another suggestion: Give me the infos I HAVE to know at ONE GLANCE. As I said, language, radio included, installation etc..
I know, what you are thinking right now: We already did this and much more than that. BUT, once again, this is just too less for n00bs like me.
And imagine, 50% less people you have to tell to use the search because you just make a understandable download-post/site with all necessary information...wouldn´t that be nice ???

Martin,

The wiki is the place to go if you have questions. Are you saying you expect all the great cookers here to further spend more personal time to give you detailed step-by-step instructions on what to do because you feel searching is too much of a hassle for you? There are plenty of "how-to" guides floating around. Each cooker may give instructions, but I don't think it's their job to educate you how on how to do it, if you don't know how, maybe you shouldn't do it. It really doesn't make much sense to have instructions included in EVERY single ROM thread.
When your mechanic changes the oil in your car, is he supposed to teach you how to drive too?

great responce
Im saying what you dont want me to say m.schmidler, use search...
God there are written SO FRICKEN many tutorials, we have been gathering links, in the threads in the wiki.
Dont we spend enough time cooking, developing etc? Should we start a school also? Who is gonna pay the teachers? you?
No, im not gonna spend more time making it easy on you, there are so much info, so much threads to help new guys (noobs) that im damn amazed that you cant figure it out.
If you cant figure out how to find stuff on XDA, then you really should sit down and think just for a sec.
Try HTC support, or MS support. Try see how helpfull they are, how they explain every thing you think you need to know.
Get a grip on reality man..either that or you and the rest of they guys demanding the things you do can start paying us by the hours we spend on making your device better.
And hey, yea, I know, my roms, and other cooks roms has bugs, flaws, this and that missing wich you deperatly need or w/e. But you know what, here is an idea:
Go back to using stock roms (here is a little help, just to show that I CAN be nice too:
Stock ROM=A operating system provided with the phone you have, in this case windows mobile, and it is not modded, altered or changed in any way. But hey, maybe that was to hard to understand too??)
Im sure the forum could be better, but making posts like that..
let me sum this up in a few words:
Respect the time we use on this, if not you will see that many of the beloved developers here just leave..and btw...thats happening all over the forum because of **** like this
OK. we will change ALL...we will make it like in other forums...a "How 2 post" so that EVERY post looks the same...so that noob can follow...
BUT YOU check ALL NEW post if they are posted the right way.
hahahahahahaahaha
NO man. IF you cannnot follow the instructions in the threads...DO NOT FLASH!!!
I spent 1 year ONLY READING before flashing my first rom!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO don´t come here with 5 posts and tell us how to do our job

You know, this IS a developers forum. There is kind of the understanding that when you see certain keywords like ROM, .NET, C++, winlibs, MSDQ, SQL, etc...that you aleady know what it is and do not need explaining.
If every developer explained everything their releases could do, down to the finest detail, they wouldnt have any time to develop, they would just be posting all day long. I don't think anything more than one or two lines (which is the case now), is needed for a good explanation.
This forum is perfect for my needs, and since it IS a developer's forum, you cannot expect it to be setup like a regular forum for non-techies. I mean, you don't see any soccer moms on here...no offense to the small minority of soccer moms who develop, lol

. Yes, floating around, but there should be some kind of link list for each device...Just let me think, how much work is this ?? 1 or 2 hours, maybe? And with that 1 or 2 hours you can help hundreds of users who would spend each 2 or 3 hours searching.
I really understand your argumentation and I will spend more time on reading and just doing some trial-and-error experiences.
But please, don´t just post such super-sarcastic responses, that won´t change anything.
I´d really do the work I suggested - but I am, as you noticed, just a beginner in flashing and modding. But maybe you guys start thinking social again and work together for a big community.

I agree I have been around since - alot of years - I have just flashed for the first time. (On that note I hope you donated some money to Bepe) You flash quickly if a) you are stupid B) You have loads of money or C) you are a happy go lucky chappy.......
good luck son, piss some more people off! The seniors and moderators work very hard and for you to come in this quickly........ Wouldn't it be more sensible to read, read, help, help, help, understand, understand, understand, understand, and then do the whole lot again. and then offer some advice. People listen to people that are intelligent and not to quick off the mark.
This is a complicated forum with a hell of alot of info. I want to offer my congratualtions to the Mods here and say THANK-YOU.......

It's unbelievable how incredibly arrogant some people are. You start this thread demanding to be spoon fed the information, and then say that people are offending you. YOU are the offensive one my friend. NOBODY HERE OWES YOU ANYTHING. Hire a tutor.
and BTW I don't think anyone here cares whether you search or flash or not, just don't come here telling everyone how they should spend more time making your life easier.

hey man, relax, i got the point. I already said, i recognized it was just a stupid post and u are right. BUT there are two ways telling me that and some replies are really a bit offending.
I hope you accept this "mistake", but it´s just a normal reaction when coming to a forum..other newbies are thinking nearly the same.
Nevertheless, when I post into other threads here please don´t think of me as some kind of moron who just annoys people the whole day
Ok. I think we should let everyone get on with what they do best. Let Noobs search and read and learn (which he has already accepted) and let the experts cook their ROMs and let the users flash them to their devices
He's got the point of no spoon feeding from anyone in here coz everyone who's a developer today was a Noob yesterday and learnt everything from the forum pages
I would love to close this thread to avoid any further forest fires, but since papamopps has a post in it, I'll leave it to the best of his judgement

Thank you, kind sir.
Yet I found the idea as quite sound and thoughtful, IMHO. If only it didn't sound as too "i need to be spoonfed" and being bashed right away. LoL
Standard templates/formats are increasingly become a necessity nowadays. In my work, they are the hero of the days. Tons of thousands of reports and informations are being streamlined in a common acknowledged formats. It saves time for BOTH information originators and users/readers. Imagine what they could do to this wonderful forum, it will save time, energy and space for not wasting them in basic queries and responses. Discussion could be more fruitful since it will only talk about advanced and detailed items since all basics are already covered in page 1 in standard form.
Again, if only the idea given some thoughts over
I don't know, but I can see pattern here that every single noob are being treated the same - the harsh way. And some people are also enjoying picking on them. I actually agree to some extent, since it also quite amusing sometimes, but please be more humane. I understand fully that sometimes they (noobs - including me) are so ignorant and lazy and almost always giving stupid and silly ideas. But it's not always 100% like that.
If you want to despise one's thinking, please despise the thinking, not the person. Just because he/she a noob, all his/her ideas are equally stupid/silly? It's an Argumentatum Ad Hominem, and it's not fair.
Noobs is only by definition that the person is new to THIS forum, the WM and HTC thingies forum. But it does not necessarily mean that the person is new to Internet Forum, right? You'll never know, but maybe the person you bash is actually a mod/admin in other respectful internet forum. Yea, who knows? So, I wish this forum could be more gentle to people.
Lastly, we know that this is a DEVELOPER forum. But it also never written that no noobs entrance allowed, right? Whoever now devs, chefs, mods and seniors are once noobs too. So anyone, including noobs, are actually a potential member to contribute to this community. It only requires time and well-grooming techniques, not hammering each one of them.
@Herr Martin Schmidler
Not a very bad idea at all, mate. I understand your frustration, since i sometimes felt the same. For me, the built-in search tool is quite (sorry) lame. And google does refine it a bit, but quite lagging since the gatherer bots need some times to cataloguing new items. But please always be respectful also to others, especially the seniors, they have spent so much time and energy building this great community. We cannot expect them to treat us as if we were kids. Guten tag, liebe gruss!

In need of help installing JustHome rom for Herald...from the begging!

I downloaded the .7z file for JustHome rom for Herald thanks to IVAN!. My IPL is 4.10.0002 and SPL 4.10.0000, I have a microSD ship and ready for action. I just need the walkthrough for installing ROMs from scratch. How do I do the hardspl....I need complete guidance!
You need to search better.
there is a "giude to flashing" in one of these theads that is specific to the htc herald which is the name for you "wing" i thing you might find it under "wiki htc herald " you can probably google it. it is a step by step guide. hope that helps.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358225 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=358615 goodluck
I apologize now for the lack of clear answers, and I understand your frustration, even if you did search and read those pages. Sometimes for newbs they can be a bit difficult to understand, and they were for me too, so I'll tell you how in newb language and provide the tools necessary.
First things first, you need to download the folder im going to provide you. Save the zip to your desktop and extract it. Now the fun begins.
1. Drag and extract the .nbh file you downloaded from JustHome and place it inside the RUU folder located inside of the MyFirstRom folder.
2. Turn your phone to flight mode. You can do this in the Comm Manager found in your Connection Settings.
3. Next make sure your phone is connected to your computer and you have Activesync (Win XP) or Mobile Device Center (Vista or Windows 7) connected with a green light.
4. Execute the application Herald-USPL (located in the MyFirstRom folder).
5. Wait for it to verify, press Enter. Wait for it to load SPL, PDA screen will go white at about 70 percent. If it doesn't and it hangs on a tux logo with a little command prompt (on the phone, sometimes this happens.) don't worry and just reset and try again.
6.If everything is successful and the PDA screen is white, press Enter and it'll launch the RUU installer application on your computer.
7. Follow the instructions, Press the Update button when it asks you what ROM you are installing. It should show some version number. Press Next, and it'll start flashing. It will say it will take 10 minutes, it'll go faster than that. After it's finished, the PDA will automatically reset to the new RUU.
If you experience any problems, don't panic, Soft Reset your device by pushing the stylus into the small whole next to the volume slider. If the phone goes into an endless reset, don't panic... Hard reset your phone by pressing holding the two soft-keys (keys with lines located above the Windows key and Ok key) while pressing the sylus into the reset hole. Release the soft keys while still holding reset and then release the reset. It will come up with a screen telling you you are being set to factory settings, press the Send key. (Green phone key)
I know you asked about HardSPL, but for the purpose of this ROM and some others, you won't need it. I prefer USPL because there's not a very easy way to brick your phone. If something goes terribly wrong, generally you can just Hard Reset and its all better.
Good luck, and I'm not liable for any damage to your phones OS or hardware, blah...
that was cool of you to take the time and post all that.wish i had that all explained to me when i started messin around.

Yeah, I just recently got started after buying a Wing a few weeks ago on E-Bay. I understand the frustration, and frankly I feel bad for new people... A lot of these threads are so out-dated now, and no one seems to want to help new people any more, with the exception of maybe Ivan who is working on a whole cooking guide. And the past instructions can get a little fuzzy. Even on the second post of Ivan's instructions it says to ask questions if you don't understand, but it seems like questions are just getting answered with more and more links to sites like Google.
Thank for step by step
Now I flash my dopodC800 to ITsPapablack but every time I reset, it's not show SPL
today I will flash again to "gulllums Touchflo2D II"
can I use same step?

You are right that many MANY threads are now obsolete, or have conflicting language & directions. Can I suggest that you edit your post to give it an explanatory title, so that it can be indexed by the search engine of this site, as well as by google? That way others may find your very post, which helps them bridge the gaps.
COMMENTARY:
That was good of you to take the time to help. In truth though, many many people help similarly. One of the problems is that the site serves so many different model phones, and so many ROM variations, that the site Admins really try (emphasis on TRY !) to segregate the "I need help with xxxxxx, please help!" threads to their new "Questions and Answers" forum, and keep each phone's ROM threads free of any threads that are not USER CONTRIBUTIONS to "hacking & development".
The problem is circular, though. I'm an information designer so I am often amazed that sometimes site "veterans" forget very easily the idea that for a new user "you don't know what you don't know until you get your toes wet"... then you get slapped around for not following the rules. But at same time, many many new users will pay no attention at all to a very long established culture that is evident in almost every User-to-User forums and bulletin boards on the web/internet... which is:
Please Mr. or Ms. New User, would you start here by simply first reading our Table of Contents -- or list of Forums -- before you begin to post? Thank you.
Click to collapse
But, as I say, a very circular problem, because all across the web most Forum category listings on Forum sites are very badly information-designed... generally too cumbersome to read first before a User feels overwhelm, which then flips the User's mental switch from "keep scanning down this really long list" to "Jesus, I'll spend more time here just figuring out WHERE to post than it takes to get a simple answer to a simple question."
It's more than a 2-way street with User and Community. It's more like a traffic jam at rush hour on a complex freeway interchange. Moral of the story is, it's impossible to know "intent" of a poster who answers a request for help with "use search" or just posts a link or two. Sometimes they really truly are giving someone the fastest exit ramp to their desired destination. It just takes too long to qualify such statements.
And yes, at same time there are examples every day of very inconsiderate people bashing newbies in unnecessarily cold ways.
And look how long this "meta" comment is -- which tries to bring a fuller perspective to the problem! Sometimes it's a wonder at all that so many people with so many phones are, every day, able to get so much help customizing their phones down to very specific solutions -- and all for free. Seen it that light, it's a miracle of cooperation!

Yes.Yes.Yes. Every noob situation is different as many already have the concept of a "list" and its purpose. The problem I see everyday is that new people never read the rules. I know I didnt, but I already understood why there iwas even a list. Its too be read and understood that noob questions do not go where it says "This forum is only meant fro ROM issues and ROM development." Its why the admins get fed up. Its really the responsibility of the poster to be informed about where to post on a forum. Even is there is 3 million forums (yes i know its overwhelming at first) there is only 4 subcategories. Read the rules. If you get lost and dont know what to do. Read the rules. Even if you dont get your answer, at least you'll learn to appreciate when someone posts in the correct place. Now im getting worked up on this. To conclude. The poster was very lucky to receive such nice answers to his question.

If only more people had that quality in them the world would be a better place.
My point is not to say the information isn't here already, my point is to say the information isn't as clear, as updated, and easily accessible as it could be. If I had my way, you would have a forum specially devoted to Tutorials. And on that tutorial forum you would have a giant sticky that says, "The Complete Idiots Guide on Flashing" (emphasis on complete). It wouldn't give you links to like 20 different libraries of dictionary definitions, wikis, and other guides. It would be like a picture book with easily seen pictures of each step. Who knows we could make it rhyme and it would be like Dr.Seus for nerds. I think after my Complete Cab Collection is finished, I'll work on such a page.
The point is: Herald and Herald Mobile 6 are a little redundant. Why do we need both? What is the point? I read the rules and the forum FAQ and all of that, and I'm not finding an answer to the usefulness of having both. And unfortunately, where are the mods during all of this? From what Ivan says, they aren't taking applications for Mods, but they probably should be. Just look at how long this post is able to get in this thread and you'll see my point.
True eventually you find an answer after reading through 8-10 posts, 2-4 wikis, 3-6 google searches, and 8-10 panic attacks after doing a bad rom attempt. Does it really have to be this way?

I've been trying to get stuff like this set up. I'm trying to become a mod for partially this reason.
I HAVE posted a complete guide on flashing, but it needs a little updating. The thing about all this is that it's not a business. A bunch of people (like me) read and read and read and gather data from one place and another and put it together to make something useful for our phones. The problem is, being that it's a forum, no one really wants to have to sit there and dedicate hour after hour to just writing out tutorials, when people like me, the ones who have that knowledge already, spend hours and hours and hours making ROMs for everybody else.

Trust me, I've been pushing the whole redundancy issue for a while already. They do have a lot of mods, but none of them really work the Herald forum due to the fact that it's an old device with little to no traffic as compared to the other phone forums.

There IS one great positive aspect to doing it this way. On the way to learn what you THINK you need to learn, you end up learning what you TRULY need to learn accidently. We live in a society where everyone wants the answers right away and to not understand the context. Sometimes, the context is more important than the answers. Searching in this manner forces the context on you before you reach an answer.

I agree, not everyone can do everything at once. You have done a pretty good job, but you have a life, and a wife, so you can't keep up all of that plus doing your ROMs, plus writing out Tutorial after Tutorial. Maybe that's why you have unmarried people like me here who can complain and write up cab collections at the same time . If only we had a female moderator, this forum would be spotless, and she could yell at dumb people at the same time.

I guess that's true, maybe it kind of disappoints me seeing as how I didn't get the Wing too long ago. And what does it hurt adding someone as a Mod... It's not like they are paying you.

I agree that searching forces the context. However, I also think it's possible to put the context together for people. You're right, society is content on finding what we want right away. However, what about the ordinary people who don't really want to dive so in depth into a pool of XDA Development. Should they not be given the right to flash a ROM to a phone, seeing as how it's pretty simple to do now. For people like me... Computer Science Majors... I love learning this context and don't mind the research, but not everyone is exactly like me or you.

I think everybody should know what he is doing before he´s trying to do it.
They have to know at least about the things that can happen.
In the last weaks dozens of users had bricked their phone´s by not reading, if there wasn´t the goldcard.
I don´t like the idea of people that come to this Forum, get everything served on silver plates and leave again without giving something back to the community.
I developed nothing by myself but at least i read the threads, try to help others when i can with answers or testing their work and give feedback.
There are countless threads and user´s that proof my point.

Of course they should know what could happen. But it doesn't take a whole lot of threads to tell you the risks, it takes a paragraph, maybe two at most. Just read the back of a bottle of sleeping pills. There are more risks to taking those and yet they fit them in the space the size of an inch, maybe an inch and a half. And if things were organized, it would be like, "If these happen, see this thread." and there's a thread full of problems and solutions. And at the bottom, "If you cannot find your problem, try Searching. Recommend using Google XDA search, because normal XDA search sucks balls."
I have seen the posts of people who have bricked their phone. Although, in my opinion, this can be as much to blame as them not reading, as the material is not easily presented. It also doesn't help that organization has ceased to exist...
My idea was not to hand everything on a silver platter, either way, you have to read something or else you'll screw up... My idea is to take the information already available, revise it, update it, and make it easily available. Rather than hidden on page 2, 3, 4, 5. I'm thinking since there are no mods available to come Sticky some of these really important things on pages 2, 3, 4, and 5... I might just bump them all.
To me, all of this is far from being handed on a silver platter... But perhaps if you are unhappy with gratuity, just don't do anything at all here, instead of expecting more... Leave it to the people who are happy with and feel good about receiving thanks. It reminds me of some guy calling to get support and all he is is directed to an automated service, sometimes you just WANT to hear a human voice for once in your miserable support seeking life...

The problem is that most new users expect the busy people who already create everything to put together something that would take hundred of man hours for them. Someone has to do it, but unfortunately, I'm too busy to do it. Someone has to step up to the plate of becoming the researcher and write up some nice walkthroughs, properly formatted. I tried doing that for a while, but people ignored those posts and still spammed the forums with the same questions over and over. If we can get some good walkthroughs and a general (here's the links for everything), I'm sure we can get it stickied... but again, it's the responsibility of the new person to read the sticky. Although a lot of new people won't read them, at the very least, it will help those who WANT to try to search. ^_^

New Here: I need help

So I've tried reading through some of the introduction threads, but there's so many jargon terms thrown out casually that I have no idea what half the posts are talking about.
I just "exchanged" my old AT&T Tilt for the AT&T Fuze, and I'm loving it. However, I want to update my ROM to windows mobile 6.5, and get into customizing it a bit. I know the first part is the hardest, because you run the risk of bricking the phone.
Since I have no experience doing this, could someone help walk me through the process?
I know I most likely want a 'cooked' ROM, and I've read the tutorial a few times, I'm just not sure I'm understanding it correctly due to some of the terminology. I'm also not entirely sure what ROM I want yet, and was hoping someone might be able to point me towards one that fits my needs.
Again, sorry if I'm asking when I just just be leaping. Will someone please hold my hand and give me some chocolate milk and talk me through changing the ROM? >.<

Thanx for your reply, it proves you didn't read my post at all.
well if you had clicked his link you would realize that post is exactly what you were asking for.
also. No one can pick out a ROM for you. Browse through them and test a few out. it only takes a few moments to flash a new ROM to your phone.
What terminology are you having trouble with? if you search for it in the wiki or in the post that was linked above then you will undoubtedly find an explanation.
A good site for general overview, if you can handle the writing style, is blown fuze. I gained a lot of info reading this, even though I don't have a Fuze yet (but would like to get one).

take the time to click the link and it will provide you all the instructions needed. Everything is explained in full detail even providing the program you need to flash a new rom, so you should really really click before you complain.
trust me, that link on flashing your first gsm rom is as complete as you get, unless you want big pretty pictures or a video.

TO THE OP
Having looked at all the stickies first rom flashing looks easier on this than on my old wizard. I found the sim unlocking, cid and super cid unlocking at first but I read everything twice and it worked okay for me
And if it doesnt then there are plenty of people here who can help

Thank you for actually reading my post, I greatly appreciate it.
To everyone else, I DID click the link, and read it several times before even posting. If you had bothered to read my post, you would have noticed I referenced it several times. I took the time to read before posting, you could at least have the civil decency to do the same.
@ Theoneeye, thank you for the assurance, I tracked down someone who was able to answer some ROM questions for me and help me find a good starting ROM and assist me with the process to make sure I don't brick my phone on my first go at it.
Normally I just try things like this, and if it fails, try again until it works. However, since I read up on this first (even though everyone here seems to think I didn't) I know I run the risk of bricking my phone. Since I've gone through several exchanges already to get this phone for free (long story) I don't wanna be swapping another phone so soon.
To those who still bother to read posts, any input you can provide on your ROM choices, or the other half of my post regarding some things I should look into installing, I would appreciate it.
To anyone else who's going to continue to refer me to that sticky instead of reading, please **** off.
wow. I'm surprised. If you actually read through the link several times and you still did not get it, you were skimming it or you really really do not have a strong grasp on the english language.
Hell, it's even numbered. How much easier would you prefer. If you want suggestions for ROM choices, it is entirely up to you. Every rom has their own unique "style" that they offer and they describe it all in the first post. Energy, NATF, etc all explain their roms in great details and some even provide extra steps.
My blunt suggestion here is that before you tell others to **** off for referring you to where everyone else has use as reference and successfully performed a flash, you should save your rudeness for yourself. Also, if you have any questions on terminology, ask which jargon is throwing you a wrench in your direction following process. That would make it much easier to explain.
P.S: seriously read through that damn sticky, it is as clear as a swarovski crystal. Follow it step by step and don't "do your thing" and you'll have a successful flash.
btw. way to be a jackass to those who have already given you the answers you asked for.
EDIT: TLDR version. Be polite, and follow the directions to the letter. and ROMs are your personal choice since they're all unique and they come in full explanations as to their purpose.

I see your arrogance is getting you far
Just getting into this meself and so far it looks like...
- sort out the hardSPL update first to let you do the ROM and other upgrades...
- once it says 1.90.OliNex on the bootloader fetch the new ROM
- reading around and going by most references the Energy 6.5 ROM seems to be worth a shot, think that's what I'll be installing on my TP
- while you're at it search for aerial upgrades and put a newer version on at the same time to sort out GPS and phone performance.
Just make sure you follow the instructions to the letter, don't run anything else on the PC while updates are being done and check, check and triple check the ROMS to make sure they're correct before doing anything

It's helpful knowing there's some decent people on these forums who are willing to help out. I was able to get the few basic questions I had regarding installation and some pointers to help me find a ROM that fits my needs. Since then I've done a few flashes and all have gone off without a hitch.
To those of you who continue to think I'm being rude, you seem to fail to realize the ignorance and blatant 'ass hattery' in repeatedly referring someone to read something they already read without providing any additional information. It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all.
Speaking of "It comes across as very condescending, and isn't helpful at all."
If you want help here this is NOT the way to get it.
This is a community of great minds and mutual respect, not somewhere for someone to start making demands and throwing out general negativity.
No one here thinks you continue to be rude, THEY CAN READ IT FOR THEMSELVES.
Everyone here is willing to help, but you need to help yourself first. You're off to a really great start....

Sorry Dracius, i'm with the majority of people here who think you're rude and havent understood the idea of this site - its a community developement site, not a one-stop download & personal tech support center.
The instructions in the flashing guide are exactly what you need to start you off in the world of flashing roms. It has a "before you start" backup part - with a link to free backup software.
It then goes on to explain exactly and in detail how to flash (GSM) hard spl - including a link and instructions to ensure you have a GSM phone. It also tells you to ensure you dont have any other programs running / screen saver etc which might throw a spanner in the works.
Following that, it says - if you want to - how to sim & security unlock the phone, including the required link.
Next it details how to flash a rom, including a very helpful line
1. Download your prefered Rom from the Raphael Rom Develpoment Page and unzip/unrar it to your computer
Click to collapse
Your prefered rom - remember this is a guide on how to flash - not what to flash. To decide that, read the details in the rom forum, read other users feedback - and then when it doesnt help, do what everyone else does and try half a dozen to see what it is you want your phone to be like.
Finally, the guide tells you how to flash a different radio - and again says this is optional. It then links to a radio thread which explains what the radio does and why you might want to flash it.
If you have a problem with any part of the process (or pretty much anything related to your phone) then (after searching & reading) make a post explaining what your problem is - and what you have done to help yourself (say exactly which threads you have read, and why they dont help you / what you dont understand) - people will generally help.
This isnt what you did.

I saw that thanks
I am not new here but I am new to the Raphael section
(I had a Blackberry Storm for a year sorry )

A request to all the devs here, about including info in first post.

This NOT ment to be *****ing, I AM grateful for all the great work being done, But i do WISH every single dev could include this in their first post in their ROMs thread:
-What the ROM is based on (HTC framework, ADP, ADP with Sense from Dream, Sense from Hero etc.)
->What works (or not) of:
* LED
* bluetooth
These are common problems with HERO ROMs, and if every dev posted this info, it would be great. For me non-LED= not usable, and for some periods of time (ie. when I'm driving much), so is no BT
->Included apps.
*Especially important are sms-spamming apps such as myfaves - coud be critical to know about.
->recommended compache settings, swapiness etc, what is used in ROM as standard for these values.
We see every Hero-thread filling up with questions about BT, LED, what HERO-version, and what framework, and whatnot. Taking 2mins to post this info could help save so much time, and so much spam/question in the ROM thread.
Apps added/removed and the other stuff is also higly relevant to non-HERO roms.
Again, this is constructive criticism aka a humble suggestion, not an angry demand from some jerk with e-penile problems. (Or so I'd like to believe, at least.)
If anyone has any suggestion as to what other info you would like to see in a ROM announcement? Post it here, maybe we can "help" the devs out by making a complete template we would like them to follow. Input from devs highly appreciated too, ofc.
I know there are toher things that shoul also be listed, such as SPL and radio required etc., although I believe almost everyone includes it. Most devs include most of the items on the list too, but many do not include all of it.
Also, I am sorry for posting this in this category, but this is where the ROMs are posted and the devs can see it.
I hope this thread has its place here. Different people are lokking for different things, and both the user and devs benefit from the user knowing what they get. (It would hopefully limit the number of "spam" questions from users if the first post contained all this information, we know many people are afraid of the search button. Also, it would be easier to wield the ban hammer on people whoe doesn't even bother to look at the simple list in the first post, and waste other peoples time.)
If a dev included enough information, ROM lists with information abut different ROMs would also be much easier to maintain for the good people making them.
It may make things more organized, but it means devs have to update the list, and pay less attwntion to -actual ROM development.
And in my opinion, a little trial and error never hurt anyone.

This is TRUE!
I so hope that Hero ROM's on donut are much more snappier! I'm addicted, I want a ROM to use for a few months! Hehe.
Yeah, it would be nice if there was a template developers could follow for posting. It would make thing's so much smoother.
Possibly in the title of the post have;
[ROM] [SENSE] "Title Here"
[ROM] [PULSE] "Title Here"
[ROM] [MOTOBLUR] "Title Here"
[ROM] [1.6] "Title Here"
[ROM] [1.5] "Title Here"
I agree with the OP there are times where i i can't flash 5 different ROMs in a day and i skip over some because of lack of info and screenshots. Maybe the community can build a template that the ROM devs can use?

I have been playing around with some images, made changes for my own phone but haven't done much else. I did just get laid off from my job so if i go the unemployment route you will definitely see me more in these forums. If i can't find a job soon i plan on getting into Java programming(i have a few app ideas) and possibly making my own ROMs. But we have to see where the job market takes me.
To stay on topic, the devs do spend a lot of time dev'n and having a template in a txt file would make posting easier for them. I have made a few threads and i can tell you making a layout for a post isn't that easy and is not much fun. If we can make an empty template that they only have to fill in their info...they would be doing the same amount of work on the post, just easier cause its all laid out for them.
We would need a sticky for it and have the devs vote on it or something.
That's a great idea it would be so much easier plus people won't be trashing threads with dumb ass questions is this for G1? Does this work or does it still do that and so on....
I mean before they upload the Rom they know most of the bugs so just saying known issues r these and that would help and just knowing what's new in the release doesn't help just confuses most of the noobs here...I'm one of them.
A little off topic but I'm a recruiting officer in a PC gaming community and I review clan applications, there were times when main application was down so I just made a sticky Thread with a template of the application to fill up and post it as a new thread
I mean look all of the devs pretty much do that already anyhow, every thread they make look exactly as the other 1 we just need a clean template that they all could use and just made it as a sticky thread and lock it so every1 could use it.

If you're making a ROM and posting it on xda, you obviously want other people to use it.
If the first post is sloppy and not informative or up to date. Less people will use your ROM. Thus, less people will test it. Therefore, you won't be able to figure out the bugs. If you're sloppy with info, you'll lose, not us.
Something that should be standard:
A proper title like suggested earlier such as [ROM] [1.6 - Pulse] [******]
(none of that [ROM] ***MghtyMax 1.9.1*** "WHAT A FEELING!" stuff....Sorry, but it's just plain horrible.)
Another thing should be a list of features, things that work, things that don't.
Screenshots are also very nice and descriptive. A lot of new users might not know what Pulse, Hero, etc. looks like.
If you take the time to work on a ROM, you have the time to work on a nice looking first post. Don't half ass your work. It makes you look unprofessional.
I agree with the first poster, also MD5 hashes would be nice.
As damnitpud mentions, this would probably make it easier for devs, not harder. This is about *not* forccing them to make the proper layout themselves, but serve as a pre-made basis for them to fill in. In ready made bb-code ofc.
Since the mighty max-rom was brought up, this is noe ROM i did not download and flash immedeatly beacause I couldn't find info about BT working or not. Also would like to know if it were the SENSE from Dream or Hero. And some other details.
As I have time to sit down and flash my phone maybe two days a week, tops, I would like to know what I want to try beforehand. I also don't want to read four hundred post with questions that sometimes are answered in the first post, sometimes in the thread, sometimes not at all. But IF they had been answered in first post - and especially if it were in standard list that all/most devs used, it would be hard to miss it, and save a lot of stupid and/or lazy people nagging.
md5 hashes is absolutely something that should be on such a list, ohnoezmahfone. That is certainly lacking, and quite important for people with a good-for-nothing-ISP or net by 3G modem etc.
Someone make up a template. There will always be someone who will volunteer to do it for the developer.
All great ideas.
Especially for the sake of SEARCH.
Example:
I enter a search for "bluetooth working hero" and up pops 4000 unhelpful results most where 1000 noobs are asking if it works or not without doing the proper research in the prior posts.
An all informative 1st post would reduce this and the unnecessary flaming that follows (also part of results)
Also, it would also be real nice if everyone keep their personal lives to themselves.
Noone cares if your "flashing [other irrelavant ROM] now because BT aint working for Hero yet. This also shows up in results.
If I want you to kno whats on my device, i'll put it in my sig
I know i just made "BT working Hero" one more result longer [4001] but i had to vent. Sometimes searching can be very annoying and cumbersome.
Less results means less hassle for devs and users.
Once again, great ideas

Lurked for a while....ready to jump in..

Hi. New here.
I don't know if it makes any sense but it's kind of intimidating making a first post on this site. Not because of any of the members but because of the knowledge gap between you and me. Usually when I join a forum I know at least something of the topic.
I have had 2 HTC Hero cdma for about 2 months since switching from HTC Pure.
I was comfortable with installing the leaked 2.1 but that is as far as I've had the courage/comfort level to go.
I could use some info. Links would be fine.
I have used the wiki but possibly don't know where to look.
1. Choosing a rom for dummies. Lots of choices. Don't understand the spec sheets posted. Once I'm used to this it will be easy swapping around but whats a good place to start?
2. Nandroid for dummies. The official release thread seems written for slightly more experienced users. Is there a less technical guide?
Anyway, thanks for having me.
Welcome to forums
Have a deep read on your devices section before doing anything!
Read, Search, Respect and Enjoy!
First, let me welcome you to XDA. There are many users below your knowledge level, and many users on your knowledge level, and many users above your knowledge level. You won't have any problems fitting in. To ensure more comfort, take time a read through some users first posts. You'll see many people didn't have a clue what they were talking about when they first started (including me) but quickly learned and grew.
1. Asking for a suggestion of a ROM is like asking for a suggestion of a food. You might ask me my favorite plate and I tell you steak, but what's to say you even like steak? Or you aren't a vegetarian? ROMs boil down to your personal preference. Try some out! Try them all out! You'll soon find a ROM you enjoy and like above all the others. If you like two - there are many tools that allow you to quickly change between two.
2. Nandroid is simple! If Hero works anything like a G1/myTouch, and I'm sure it does, it's a simple once click procedure. You go into your recovery image, click Nandroid backup, and you're done! If you want to restore, you do the same thing except click Nandroid restore! It is point blank that simple. Remember, a nandroid backup saves your phone's entire state as is. Excluding the SPL, RADIO, and recovery image. All your apps, data, text messages, EVERYTHING is saved and able to be restored in a matter of MINUTES!
As the member above me posted, READ! DO NOT SKIP ANY PART OF THE POST! Skipping even a single sentence can be the difference between a working and non-working phone. Read the thread and see how things went for other people. You might see the perfect ROM only to read and find out it doesn't even work. Then you won't have wasted your time flashing to only figure this out for yourself. I understand there are many technical terms, but it's good to go ahead and learn them because chances are you'll see them again and again.
Search for any questions. Some people think that it might actually be quicker to post their question and wait for a reply. Well, as you see, this is a forum! NOT A CHAT ROOM! People aren't going to be looking at your thread the second you post it. People may look, but never reply. Chances are you'll find your answer faster by searching and learn better. Remember, the art behind searching is using the correct wording. I'm sure you can search, though. However, failing to search can constantly result in getting flamed (personally attacked) for being too lazy. Remember, we are a community, not a crowd. We're here to help each other and improve our devices. Without working together, many things you find and enjoy here probably would have never came to be.
And if the rest of the forum is like the G1 thread, get ready for smart-ass plain out rude people. Remember it's the internet, though. Don't let insults get to you.
Again, welcome!
Welcome to XDA. Read, Research, and Happy Flashing
