Didn't know which forum to best place this but since many of the WM6 roms have the sms backup program from Jeyo installed, which I find very limited, I thought this the best forum to inform on PIM Backup. View the details about this program at
http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1806
It does all the PIM including the Message accounts (MMS, SMS, Hotmail, Xpressmail) and call log. It can also do unattended scheduled backups. I tested this on a Wizard WM5 device and it was flawless. The backup file created is a zip file with the information stored in files that can also be viewed with notepad.

PIM Backup is included in XPlore 1.1 and its currently in the Faria Clean that I'm doing a beta on (I assume it will stay in the release version). And yes, PIM Backup is very nice. I just wish they would also backup your Owner Information

Not to go off topic, but... DUH! Sheesh, after typing and posting that it struck me the Owner Info is in the registry. Sure enough, [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ControlPanel\Owner]. I just did an export of this key and stored it on my SD in my setup folder... I should be good to go now for Owner info... Sheesh...

hey have somebody a app for it ? (make a 1:1 copy of my mms, sms, emal)
I recommend SPB Backup: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/backup/?en
It backs up to self-extracting file (ie you don't need SPB Backup to restore from them)
However, it is a commercial peice of software (although there is a 30 Day trial)
(NOTE: Backing up lots of email (especially with attachements) can take quite a bit of time with it)
give me your email and i will mail you a application it creates a backup file of mms sms mails call logs and events tasks and all but not your applications that you have installed in your phone and the best part is it restore all this even if you upgrade your rom in which the spb don't work and its a freeware
its a exe file which works on windows mobile and not on normal pc windows you can put it anywhere you want and when you want to restore it just click on the exe file and select restore where backup is coming select restore browse to the place where you keep the restore file and start it simple

Haven't used it yet but have read about it...still doesn't do MMS.
I too have been looking for something to export MMS messages and gave up not finding anything. So I created a makeshift one for myself instead:

Check it out... hopefully it'll help you too!
I want to save all my text messages, contacts, call logs, favorites, notes, tasks, etc.
I CANNOT install any new software on my phone, and even if I could, I couldn't run it. I can't start any programs on the phone except Calendar, Contacts, and search. Everything else is screwed up.
I can see the files in Mobile Device on Windows, but ActiveSync does not work, and some of the files are not accessible. Which files do I need to copy? I've got pim.vol already, but what specifically does that contain? Where are text messages stored? I plan to do a hard reset, and if that works, to copy the backups back onto the phone and then back them up through a normal method. Then I can re-flash with something newer to make it functional again.
When I look at Properties for \Databases\MSN Object ID, it says 356 bytes and 0 records, last modified 1/19/2008, which is around the date when I last flashed my phone to upgrade to WM6.
Oh! Is cemail.vol where the mail is stored? It's only 800 kB, last modified 8/12/2008, which is the day my phone crapped out and the day after I installed Funambol synchronizer.
Try PPC PimBackup, it will backup all your stuff and its realy easy to manage backups!

@endolith
PIM.vol : PIM stands for Personal Information Management, PIM.vol contains PIM data like appointments, tasks, notes etc...
Sorry, but i don't know how to backup data without running any backup program...

Well I can copy files like PIM.vol and cemail.vol, and then if I copy them back onto the same AKU I have heard that it will recover them (and then I can use something like PPC PimBackup before reflashing).
My device an Atom Life WM 6 has locked up.
-the screen is locked up on windows boot image- cant control pocket pc
-soft reset battery pull anything i can think of does not help
-my safemode program isnt helping
Only option is HARD reset
Before I do that-
surprisingly can receive calls and sync over active sync
how can i back up the following:
- SMS - most important
- Contacts - second important
are there locations of these databases.
Any help will be appreciated.
Thank you
pim.vol
Hi
The phone module is seperate from the rest of the operating system, hence being able to function when WM has stopped responding.
I think that these databases are in a file called pim.vol. I can't be sure though. Maybe some other members can advise about back up software that runs entirely on the pc. The latest version of Sprite Backup perhaps?
Cheers

If AS works then try Jeyo Mobile Companion, it runs purely on the PC and if it will connect then you should be able to export the stuff you need.
I copied over pim.vol but thats only contacts and tasks/appointments.
Anyone know the location of sms db.??
Unfortunately i do not have spb bakcup installed, dont think i can at this point.
I hope Jeyo works...
thank you
jeyo download sms's automatically.. but you will have to install a client side app.. if it doesn't do that automatically
just a suggestion for the future.
schedule a backup using PIMBackup2.8 to your storage card every once in a while..
the sms and emails are stored in "cemail.vol"
ok go here and install this http://www.mymobiler.com/
Once you have active synced your deivce, you can control it from ur PC
Then find and install PIM backup (using mymobiler). Then backup using PIM backup all your messages, contacts etc.
I find this better than using Sprite backup as this backs up registry too which might not always be a good idea when having problems. Its nice to have a simple PIM back up when needing to do a hardreset.

Me, very long way to go for that. Only been on here for 18 months when work decided they wanted to try something on WM5 phones. That didnt work out and I have snaffled one of them for myself. Have tried many things to get a finger friendly PPC and am as near it as I need.
I have read about backupsoftware and basically I am okay with reinstalling all cabs, software etc but I just want to keep my smshistory AND my contact details. Was kinda timeconsuming to sync all contacts to their correct facebookgroup etc. Anyways, people said that not all backupsoftware will help you fully, but how do I do with the easy simple stuff that I mention above?
I have v1.48 and Im gonna upgrade with the official 1.61.

PIM Backup is fantastic...and free!
I'm new to Sprite Backup, and not sure how it saves my sms. In custom backup there is only an option for email. where can i find my sms?
thx for help,
uxu
No one an idea ?
I haven't worked it out either so I use MyPhone to back up SMSs. That doesn't save MMSs though.

i use myphone too, but i don't realy like to have all the stuff online. According to the sprite backup website it saves sms, so why isn't there an easy way to show them ?
Thought I'd posted a reply here but now a little later I can't see it - well I am 64! Just in case I'll replay again (but damned if I know what I did witht eh earlier one!) I much simpler way I've found for maintaining backup and restore of SMS, appts etc is pimbackup - free download from here:
http://www.dotfred.net/default.htm
Recommended if you haven't seen it.
Thank you. I will take a look at PIM Backup. Otherwise, i like Sprite Backup. Hopefully someone knows where are sms stored
I did a bit of reading on this and SMSs are stored in pim.vol from what I understand.

that's a beginning. thanks
I've found SMS data in the file \My Documents\SMS.MSGS.xml on my HD2 as well. This file doesn't exist on my older Windows Mobile phone.
I'm just blundering around and don't have any particular expertise with Windows Mobile, but, as you say, it's a start. I've been looking for a way to selectively back up and restore SMSs, and in particular, MMSs for a while now. The best I've come up with so far is MyPhone, but it doesn't save MMSs; nor is it likely to according to the Microsoft MyPhone forum.

Mh, i didn't have that file.
searched the net and different sites say that the pim.vol is a database which stores contacts and stuff like that, but not the sms
SMS.MSGS.xml isn't hidden on my HD2 but it's worth checking.
The more I look into this, the more confused I get. Searching through my device I've found text from my SMSs in a number of places. SKTools is useful for browsing the databases on a device. In addition to the above, I have SMS data in cemail.vol. I suspect that this is the default store and that Pocket Informant and HTC's own application muddy the water. At least I'm able to back my SMSs up, even if I can't selectively restore them with Sprite Backup.
