Got that, it really is good. Do you know where it stores stuff, I am sooo paranoid about my precious ram. Can you recommend some optimum settings so it's all in my card?
I like it better than deepfish so far, dynamic zooming is more straightforward.
Thanks to you.

[REQUEST] [APP] Speed reading on Android (Rapid Serial Visual Presentation)?

Hey guys! I don't know if you've ever tried one of those speed reading softwares (like iReadFast for Mac OS), but they really turn reading into a whole new experience. It's less tiring and a lot faster. And, guess what, there already is an app for the much loved iPhone (called QuickReader), which takes speed reading to a mobile device. In their FAQs, they talk about eventually taking QuickReader to Android OS, but nothings planned yet. So... if any of you developers feel the urge to do some good for all us heavy readers... why not make an app? Cheers, Thomas
This is the technique included in QuickReader:

+1 -- the lack of an RSVP app (or at least a good one... there is SpeedReader - http://www.appbrain.com/app/speed-reader-lite/com.shrednet.SpeedReader - but the free version isn't good enough to justify risking buying the full app, whenever that becomes available).

I would love to see this.
SpeedRead lite sucks. I'm using it now, only supports .txt files and has terrible features.
Would love to see this!
Regards
Smith
Yo guys!
I'm almost finished an app for exactly this!
You will be able to flash text across your screen at up to 999 words per minute
Also, it saves and reads to/from the SD card so you can just drop in .txt files and it will read them, you can create new .txt files by pasting content into the app too! It also has a simplified comprehension test which tracks your progress over the last 30 odd tries and displays it in a nice graph.
Right now, I'm just designing the UI and then I'm pretty much done.
It will be called 'Speedr', watch out for it!
Please post and I'll be happy to beta test.
Also, could you PLEASE build in ePub support -- I'd be willing to buy that app!
Yo Matt,
I'm not sure its ready for Beta just yet, I actually found out it has a couple more important little stuff to sort out, like properly putting loading large amounts of text into threads etc..
Epub.. that would be very nice indeed, but I'm not aware of any Java library's that would read that for me :/
I'll be sure to look around though, I can see how this would be another big selling point! Thanks for the tip, hadn't thought of this!
The great thing about ePub is that its pretty much xhtml in a modified .zip wrapper. So working with it isn't to bad. In terms of available libraries/resources, check out:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3645795/epub-library-for-java-or-android
http://www.siegmann.nl/epublib
Either sounds like a good place to start.
Not to sound harsh but an ereader w/o ePub support will be a very tough sell. RSVP + ePub is a novel (and needed) reading app.
Good luck. Really looking forward to app.

Thanks for that Matt, the Epublib library looks real nice, I think I'll have a go at using that. I'll also be looking into providing PDF support on top of the basic .txt support. This should cover most ebooks.
By the way, just so I'm clear, the emphasis for my app will be on improving your reading speed, not necessarily just a plain reader. For example, while flashing the text, only a pause button will be there. The user will not be able to move backwards or forwards as this would be sorta like cheating.
This looks awesome...

Thanks for the reply Mark. I really encourage you to prioritize ePub above PDF. The reason is that currently Pdf's preservation of print design artifacts (page numbers, hard line breaks, hard hyphenation, headers and footers, in page footnotes) kills the value of RSVP, as it breaks the reading/processing flow. This is one of the many reasons why ePub is so superior to PDF for ereading.
As far as the app only being about reading speed, that's a bummer -- I think you would be surprised at the amount of people who would like a straight out ereading AP like this (I'd be happy to spec it out if you ever would like). That said keeping with you goal, let me suggest one feature to add to the screen: have the app pause/play by tapping the general text area and then add speed up/slow down arrows that can effect the rate of display in real time. You can also use the volume rocker, but given the increase in larger tablets I think providing an on-screen alternative is a good idea. Also think about display a wpm count.
Good luck.

Hi Guys,
I am looking for an XDA developer that can develop an android app to help my pediatric patients. It will need to incorporate visual training and reading skills training into one app. Anyone that can help?
haven't you seen this?

[APP] RepliGo Reader - PDF reader with markup tools!

Been looking for an app that can do this for a while. Bought ezPDF hoping it would eventually support this, but it looks like someone beat them to it.
Functionally, it seems to perform similarly to Adobe's own Reader app with maybe a little better performance and the exception that this one has markup tools, which are very easy to use and customizable.
One minus is that it costs $5, but I needed something like this and I am very happy that someone has finally filled that need, so they deserve my $5
The features are good but i find the rendering performance very poor.
When you switch the page it will first show a blurry image which it sharpens in about a second. Adobe or ezpdf show the sharp image immediately.
I also dont like that when you scroll up and down the page moves around horizontally.
I personally hope that aldiko gets an update soon for some much needed pdf features like keeping the zoom-level and faster zooms and moving around the page. I love Aldiko's book shelf/list and the overview and organization it offers.

Taptu for honeycomb

Go check it out, taptu just got updated to 1.4 to support honeycomb, it's like pulse, only better .
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.taptu.streams
Purely a subjective point of view to say it's better than Pulse. Both are good apps and I recommended that everyone tries both before forming an opinion.

I was an avid Pulse user and have switched over to Taptu. There isn't one thing that Pulse can do which Taptu can't, but Taptu has several features which Pulse lacks Both are free, so nothing to lose.
i much prefer pulse because of the reading pane. But to each their own Still, thanks for posting.
The point of all these "newsreader" is so I can read the news in one place, but I find that how the sites are designed, it's just gives you a breif detail and then you have to follow the link to the real website to finish the story which is really annoying. I might as well have bookmarks to various news sites. It's probably better to find one good news site to go to.

exactly...
UPVISE is the answer, it doesnt give you the link to go somewhere to read the rest of the content, it snaps everything into the app in text only mode -- so you can read the full article from where you are at in the app.
I have been using this for quite sometime on symbian and see no issues.
I dont think it ever stores any of those contents locally anywhere to be concerned about them news articles consuming space.
here is the link.

I love pulse on my ipad2 and till the developer update the honeycomb one to be on par with the apple one it's not that good, the iPad one is much faster, render quicker, and you can open the full page inside the app and not go outside of it, plus it refreshes faster on ipad2 . Hopefully the developer will update it soon.

I've switched over to Taptu, for me Pulse was way too limited on the news sources but Taptu is the complete opposite
+1 for Taptu.....being uk based I find more feeds available on taptu and the configuration of feeds is much easier. It's fast and most links take you to a text version with an option to go to web page if you need more.

Best book reader

What is the best book reader that you use on android at the moment. And what is the best feature.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA
I pretty much just use google reader since it just updated itself.
I use fbreader. Handles the formats I want (epub) and allowed me to add both the Project Gutenberg and Baen free book catalogs, giving me a vast source of free reading material.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA
I always just use Google's Play Books app - particularly since I switched to ICS, as it does look great and perform very well. It's a minor thing but even the page transitions are really slick. Having a night mode to invert to colours is very handy (almost necessary if you're reading at night). When I get an Android tablet in future it'll be good to know that all my books are synced across all devices, plus you can also read your books in the browser since the Play rebrand.
I use Moon reader+, wide range of books in store available for free
Everyone could have different opinion on apps. I think best way to find out is to read reviews and ratings and check the pictures provided with the app to see whether it suits your likings. Another way is to try it. Most of the apps come in free versions. I personally like to stick with "original" apps.
I used many readers, but Moon Reader+ fits me most. I like its interface.
I strongly recommend the software Ireader, it is very good
kinde good
First things first: check to make sure apps are even available, let alone working, in your country. If you're outside of the USA, it's pretty much a free for all, e.g. Google Books isn't available in Malaysia. So you could have the app, but then you'd have to get your books from somewhere else.
I'm using Moon Reader on my Android phone. This app is good for Epub format. For pdf format i'm using Adobe reader.
On my Linux Fedora i have Calibre book reader. I recommend

[DISCUSSION] Which Is Best Browser For Android

What i think stock browser is best as it uses less resources
and also will not cover more memory
and if you want an alternative then opera is best if you want web page to load faster
and dolphin for fast browsing and best HTML5 and java script support
And MINI versions of both are better than Best
And What You Think
REPLY
for me Firefox is the best..maybe because I used to it
Which browser is best for Android
This is a reply (and not a new thread right?) I hope so.
For me, dolphin browser works best. I can set the text to be HUGE and text reflow works great.
I really like the idea of a night mode -- but the add-on available is just terrible, in fact I made a thread about it.
Dolphin is fast, easy to use, and just seems to work great. I tried firefox, but I don't know if they support add-ons, and if they do,
can anyone tell me if they have a night mode setting? In fact, can we make a thread about browsers with a dark night mode setting or addon?
I like Chrome, it's well designed and has a nice interface and features.
Try to Dolphin Browser. For me the fastest and the best browser
Dolphin is incredibly fast, no doubts about that! I find it very rough & jerky though for some reason, for lack of better words (just a personal opinion). Chrome, idk, never been fond of it, but it's pretty good & stable. My personal favourite is Firefox (with addons) - takes care of everything what I want!
Dolphin my preferred browser. It supports Flash, unlike Chrome, and unlike Chrome and Firefox, it doesn't do weird text size formatting things on certain webpages.
