Hello Everyone,
I have a T-Mobile USA SDA and had a problem with emails on the device.
Not sure if it is working as designed or if there was a blug, so I thought I would float it by you guys.
Setup:
Mail client on T-Mobile USA SDA
Configured manually to check pop and send smtp with my gmail account. It is set such that the message headers are downloaded first.
I connect WIFI and send/recieve
I receive a header I had sent myself for testing
I click on it and select to download the message body.
I go back to the inbox.
I do send and receive.
I receive the message body.
I read it.
I go back to the inbox.
I do send and recieve.
Result:
The message is removed without a trace. it is not put into deleted items folder, nor does it remain in the inbox folder.
Is this expected behavior? I am not allowed to store mail on my device? Is there a registry setting to change this behavior? There is no options within the application. Is there a registry setting to change wheremails are stored in general? thanks for seeing the barrage of questions!
Yes I got the same result with you. Mine is a Dopod 577w (Tornado in Taiwan). This behaviour also happens to other mail servers.
ni hao,
I had searched a bit about it and found some places explain it. The explanation sounds weak, but it looks like something we will have to live with until either gmail or ms changes their server or client software.

The problem is with the default behaviour of Gmail - it will "hide" all the
already-downloaded mail. Unfortunately, it seems not even now that the beta
phase is long over can you effectively override this behaviour - the POP3
radio buttons just don't stick in the Settings window.
Therefore, the best solution IMHO is switching to an alternative e-mail
client that doesn't remove the messages that are not available online any
more from the local view. The alternative mailer clients FlexMail and Qmail
are like so - see the row "Does it only display mail that is still on the
server? " in the comparison chart of my mailer client roundup at
http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/index.php?blog=3&p=569&more=1 . Of the two,
FlexMail offers scheduling capabilities.
PocketPC MAG:
Does it only display mail that is still on the server? : one of the most-criticized problems with Messaging is that it does not show older messages (messages that have been deleted in the meantime) in the Inbox unless you explicitly (mass-)move them to a separate folder. As can be seen, it's, in addition to Messaging, only nPOPw that deletes the messages from the local view that don't exist on the server any more. The other mailer applications don't.
I might just write a pop/smtp client software myself. Much easier to tweak it to do what I need it to do, and in my previous job I worked for an email client so I know those protocols well. I probably won't add advanced functionality or IMAP/Exchange, because I have no individual use for those.
Very Useful info.
My current solution to this issue is Outlook & ActiveSync. Just download your mail to PC and sync. Mail in mobile Outlook account will not disappear unless you delete them.
By the way, I think Gmail mobile website is also okay for mail browsing & composing.
(it is not a good experience posting reply here using Pocket IE)
I'd like to write a mail client using .NET CF just for fun if I have time. I'm not a C++ guy.
hi there!
just thought i'd share my 2 pence worth:
i use pocket outlook to access my gmail account, however the emails have a funny habit of "dissapearing" after being downloaded. this is probably due to gmail's automatic removal of downloaded emails.
as work around is stated here:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=47948
this will allow you to retain emails (both read and unread) from the last 30 days in your pop inbox. which should b ample time for you to decide what to and not to copy
in short:
instead of logging on using:
Code:
user
use instead:
Code:
recent:user

you could also just switch from "get full copy of message" to "get message header only". enable the message body box and set to 999kb. that will keep messages on your mobile device indefinately.
i dont remember if that works or not for me - i usually download full messages as i hate having to connect twice (especially being on the w'n'w data plan )
now if only i spent the past week revising for tomorrow's exam rather then researching how to set up my pda...
doesn't seem to work for me. the downloaded email is still deleted after a send/receive
using pocket outlook on treo 750v
what settings do you have for: "Only display messages from the last XX days"?
(i'm now having the opposite problem... it seems that even after i've deleted a email, it comes back after a while )
tian
here are my settings
username recent:[email protected]
password: xxxxxxxx
only display messages from the: unchecked
require ssl connection: checked
outgoing mail req. authentication: checked
get full copy of messages
incoming: pop.gmail.com
outgoing: smtp.gmail.com
what settings do you have?
i've got the same except:
only display the messages from the last 3 days
btw. in my outlook options under storage i also have:
manually remove email
I also have delete items manually. I will try out 3 days and see what happens.
My account configuration is the same for both outlook and pocket outlook, except the username : it is my full gmail address for outlook contrary to pocket outlook which does have my full address with the "recent:" prefix...
Everything is working fine, I have all my mails retrieved in outlook and all my mail from the last 30 days in pocket outlook...
To prevent it from being deleted, make a sub Folder within Inbox, move all your wanted mails into the new folder, well, it will never be deleted. Hope this simple solution is helpful to all.
Here are the symptoms...
1) Send email to my email server
2) Access mail server Inbox with webmail - new mail is there
3) Do send receive on PPC to download headers with POP3
4) There is my new mail in PPC Inbox
5) Refesh on webmail, mail also still there
6) Delete email from PPC Inbox
7) Do send receive on PPC
8) No email in PPC Inbox, mail now in Deleted items
9) Refesh on webmail, mail is still there
A) Empty Trash on PPC, Inbox empty, Deleted items empty
B) Refesh on webmail, mail still there
C) Do send receive on PPC
D) PPC, Inbox empty, Deleted items empty
E) Refesh on webmail, MAIL GONE!!!
I expected:
D) Mail re-appears in PPC Inbox
E) Refesh on webmail, mail still there
Happens with both WM2003SE and WM5, I think its got something to do with the configuration of my mail server as this didnt used to happen (recently switched from Microsoft to Linux/Horde server).
If I change the mail protocol from POP3 to IMAP4 it works as I expected it would, so I guess the Linux/Horde mail server presumes the POP3 access coming from the trashed PPC should trigger a mail flush, where as IMAP4 is presumed to be a header access again. Guess there is some logic difference between MS mail server and Linux.
Any ideas/explanations greatly appreciated?
That's how it's supposed to work.
It sounds as though you had Exchange set to ignore deletes from mobile devices.

Thanks for that, if thats the case then I am surprised the email didnt disappear from my mailserver when I initially deleted it from my PPC Inbox. All through this I had "Leave copies of emails on the mail server" ticked in the mail account settings on PPC. The send/receive didnt clear the mail servers Inbox, neither did the Delete so I was surprised the Empty Trash Can did.
Solved it by switching to IMAP4 - but logic of all this appears odd to me.
Thanks, anyway.
I have tried setting up the wm6.1 pocket outlook to fetch emails from out Zimbra email server (Zimbra Mobile provides an Exchange interface compatible with pocket outlook). It works: POutlook fetches the email headers and notifices me. So far so good.
The problem arises when I want to read the full email. I can find no possible way in Pocket Outlook that allows me to fetch the full email. In the menu I found "Fetch Message" but it was grayed (which I found odd as only the header was fetched).
Does anyone know anything about this issue/problem?
It seems this problem only occurs if POutlook is configured to fetch only email headers. If it is configured to fetch part of the email body as well, a "Download the rest of this email" button is inserted at the bottom of the email body which when clicked, will in fact download the rest of the email. Why M$ decided that this buttom wasn't necessary when nothing of the email body was fetched I cannot grasp.
So the solution is to have POutlook always download part of the email body and you get the option to download the rest. Otherwise you have to use IMAP or POP3 instead.
Yesterday is reseted my hd2
I set my Gmail as my e-mail but he won't receive any mails anymore :S
Anybody an solution?
1- Open your e-mails inbox.
2- please tab: Menu/tools/Option
3- please select an account, then tab: Edit Account Setup>
tab Next till you reach a page of : Outgoing (SMTP ) mail server
4- In the bottom of this page you may tab: "Advanced Server Setting"
5- In the column of : Network connection, select your probvider name instead of " The Internet" ..
That is all ... you may repeat all these steps for every e-mail account you have ..
I hope I explained it clearly for you ..
sorry for my bad English
doesn't work for me
any other suggetions?
My HD2 is connecting to gmail and other custom mails, then it also shows connected and downloading headers in the progress bar for all the mails, but no mail is visible in the inbox folder. I can send new email using the same account which again is only visible on PC and is downloaded on my HD2 but not shown.
Does anyone knows, how to fix this?
