just got my MDA.confused about everything - General Topics

hey guys,
I just got my MDA,and ben reading this forum for a while.Well,I want to put all these applications on it,but I dont kno how!Like for example,I wanted a freeware, but dont konw where to save it!
also, can someone help me unerstand what ROM and everything else I need to know.I also wanted to know how to change up the soft key functions, like I want the left for contacts, and right for something else.
Thanks got the help!

Well at least you tried...that's more than a lot of others can say. Be prepared...others will slam you.
So if you have a freeware application that is in the form of a .cab file then simply connect your device to your computer, establish an active sync connection, and copy this file to any folder in your MDA (preferably my documents just for ease of locating it). Then from your phone...just click it and the file is a self-installing file. If the program is in the form of a .msi or .exe or something...then you execute the file on your computer while your phone is connected. If the file was made correctly then it should install on your phone very easily.
ROM is read-only memory that can't (easily) be moved/written to. For your purposes in relation to your MDA...think of it as your operating system.
Know this...if you want to mess with your MDA...you have to unlock it. If you unlock it...you will void your warrenty (although t-mobile doesn't check if the phone is locked or not if you send it back anyways).
If you want to do it...then go here...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435
Next...get to searching and reading through threads. Most everyone here can attest to the fact that you have to read through literally a few hundred pages of threads before you should think of starting to ask questions.
Enjoy the MDA!

yea
I was going through the threads, but didnt have a clue what ROM is and what i had to unlock.
how do i check if my phone is a G3 or G4?

Please please please help me upgrade my MDA...

I've searched and searched to find a post that tells me straight to the point how to upgrade my MDA but I just can't find one.
I've got the XDA Developers FTP loaded up in FlashFXP but there seems to be a lot of empty folders on it.
Can someone please tell me if there is a guide on here of exactly what I need to do to upgrade the unit? I followed some advice to fix my Bluetooth problems on here and now my whole MDA has stopped functioning properly... the Today screen just shows all strange graphics etc but I still have the upper and lower menus.
If there is no guide, can someone please tell me what I need to do... my business relies on my MDA!

Maybe there is a solution: someone else had the same problem (I think, he also had a corrupted Today screen), but after he chose a different picture in the today screen the problem is solved.
Not good about the files Whoever it is has just cost me an awful lot of money so I hope they feel great!
Screen issue is now solved thnks to the picture thing but my Bluetooth will not function at all now... was asking for me to turn flight mode off when it wasn't even on and now it doesn't work full stop.
ok this a small guide i made for a friend..... i'll post it here
ok first thing to do is get the ROM file.
second... after you download the file... extract the zip into any
place you want you will end up with an .exe file... right click on the
exe file and choose extract ( not you need winrar to do that) and
after you extract you will find a bunch of files one of them is named
ROMUpgradeUt.exe or (MaUpgradeUT.exe) replace this file with this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/download.php?id=4022
after you replace the above file, double click on it and it will start
upgrading ... the device will go into bootloader mode (black screen
with Serial 1 written in it) you will get the country error ID
((((DON'T PANIC)))) and DON'T REMOVE THE DEVICE FROM THE USB OR REST
THE DEVICE, just click Exit to finish. while the deice in the bootloader
mode click on the replaced file and run it again the upgrade process
should go fine................
i will try later to do the guide in a pdf format with pix and more detialed
Okay guys I'm new here too Since I want to get rid of the pink t-mobile stuff and upgrading to a ROM which provides me better camera quality I would like to try a newer ROM version.
But where to get the newest ROM from ftp://ftp.xda-developers.com/Magician/ ? I see extened ROM's but I have been told an extended ROM is a kind of addition to a normal ROM. But where can I find the basic ROM. I've been told that O2 and Qtek roms are the best.

modifiying s100 ROM

as the title, I'd like to modify the ROM of the S00, I mean i'd like to take the original ROM and add some new software in it so that if i have some problemes with it later, i can reinstall with all my sofwatres and documents. How can i do that pliz ? I'm a newbie...pliz help me !!!
I don't think anything like rom kitchen has been done yet; so far i think the best we've got is big storage hack. I guess there may be some extensions of big storage/extended rom that would work, but I've not looked into it further.

No sorry, there is a sof or sthg for this. My BOSS told me that he saw someone doing this one day but he can't remember which soft it was with. The guy did that on a Qtek 2020. I'm looking for how to do it on a XDA II mini pliz ??

For the Qtek 2020 it's much simpler, as the "Storage" area can be made writable. But it's true, it can be done for the XDA mini also. The procedure was something along the following lines:
- dump the correct portion of your ROM to an SD card - which portion that is I can't remember right now
- copy it to your PC, using ntrw
- move it to a Linux PC, and mount this binary file as a FAT file system
- copy whatever you want into that file system
- copy the binary back to your Windows PC, back to your SD card, and flash it back to your mini's ROM.
This has been described in more detail elsewhere, in one of the threads dealing with BigStorage. You can find it using the Search function. I do not think there's an easier way than that at the moment. Qtek 2020 and XDA mini are just too different.
Cheers
Daniel

I didn't understand this line...I'm such a newbie so i'd like to have it step by step if possible pliz...and another question : Do you really have to move the binary files to linux ? I have only windows and I don' t like LINUX that much. Can you explain step by step pliz and what is the soft ntrw, gimme a link to download it by PM pliz, so nice thanks a lot !!
ps: and if you can tell how to it on a Qtek2020 it will be very nice too.
Like i said prashanth, it's not really userfriendly yet. It's best not to be a newbie and try something so involved; there's not really much reason to do so anyway. I find it most convenient to make a self installing backup of my working PPC, and Keep it on storage and/or storage card. That way, even if there's a hard reset, everything can be up and running within 3 minutes. However, installing all software from a hard reset, registering all software, sorting your startmenu, setting everything up etc - it's quicker just to backup and restore!

Hey look... I understand that you possibly have no idea of etiquette in english, But I tell you this, Friend, you will not receive any assistance demanding it like that. In our culture, however spread and in whichever country, if one asks for assistance, one is actaully asking for something.
In this case, help, or assistance, is given out of free will and the kindness of ones heart. just DEMANDING it will get you nothing. I'm actually surprised you got the response you did. Now, most of us are already thinking you have been scammed by some fool trying to make you turn your prized little device into a paperweight, and most of us are thinking to ourselves that you may actually deserve it with the way you are reacting in the forum.
Now, be decent and ask for assistance like a decent human being, and you might get some help... else, go ahead and brick your device... Keeps the nonsense out of our forums.

Hi, wassup bro

Best of luck

Hahaha..lol.. this is too funny...I second that MrBee
I've seen these FLASH.DIO files before and I have a fair idea where he's goin wrong but I'm just not too inclined to reply with that attitude.. LOL...
Altho the idea of resurrecting the world's neverending foiled attempts at shoving a WM5/6 into a Magician is intriguing... kinda the reason why I came back to reading this thread after abandoning my Magician for a Trinity for some time now .. Kudos for the attempt anywho...

JesusFreke please read this.

Well today i had everything setup like i wanted. I had JFv1.41 rc33 version install on my g1 and a custom Theme. I wanted to switch my them for a new more looking one. So i download a new custom and install it. to my surprise i install an old them which i install. Boot the phone and got the T Mobile G1 logo and that it i get stoke there. So here why i made this tread to tell JesusFreke in the next or when ever he could add a USb toggle in recovery mode. I am stoke with this till 2 days. This will help allot of first g1 noob. Thanks for your time.
ok
A: next time make sure you download a theme that works with your version of JF
B: why didnt you put this under JF's thread?
C: if you have an update.zip(or something that can be renamed and used as such) you can go to the recovery console, type "mount sdcard", then use the basic linux commands to put it on the top directory of the sdcard and restart and load it up, thus fixing your phone. If not, you should keep on somewhere on your phone just in case such a need arises

So you want to be a smart ha here i go.
A) People can make mistake
B)I did that because i wanted to make Jf read this thread and it will help people like me who don't really have the knowledge on using Linux easy.
C)I don't really know that much of using linux like u.
I'm sure many people send JF many PM's wanting the same thing as you do. Do you think he has the time or want to answer a question that someone else might be able to answer?
Making mistakes is something you need to be more careful about. Having root means the phone will let you do whatever you want. This means safety features that are made to protect you from yourself are not active. Read about what you are doing before doing it. That is the message n00bs need to be given.
Put the sd card in your computer, place the .nbh file on it, reboot into bootloader and downgrade your phone. Then work your way back up to JF 1.4x and read more carefully before you install themes. I know my way around the G1 very well (if I dont say so myself) but I still do not install themes. They are nice, but they are not at the point where installation is as easy or system friendly as they could be.

I've never really used Linux myself, as it seems more complicated than it's worth most of the time, but I've had no problems so far using a rooted G1, or installing custom firmwares, etc. I haven't tried themes, but from what little I've read into it, not only does it seem fairly straight forward, but I've also noticed quite a few of them warn the user that they need to be running the Lite version of JF 1.4x before they install a theme because otherwise there simply isn't room. That said, it's not up to JF to babysit everyone that decides to delve into the unknown.
I dont understand what your problem is,
if u dont know about linux buy an microsd to SD adapter, extract microsd from your phone and use a computer to copy JF's latest update.zip to your card and then upgrade usual way
what is the problem?
JesusFreke if your reading this I just wanted to say "Hi" and "Thanks" and ... and.... Ummm ...
Everyone in here relax.
Try not to direct threads to a specific person. This is a developement thread. You want a specific someone to read something, send them a PM. If you are lucky he will read it, if he doesnt have them turned off.

SM-T116bu Kernel?

I just bought a Samsung tab 3v then I successfully rooted it using this: ( www 4shared com/get/4sFqkNODba/ ) but after I did that I could no longer use the camera (error then force close) so I'm asking if anyone could help me with that please? I did few research they said it's something about the kernel so anyone could provide me with one for my phone?
Someone please help me with this? At least provide me with an already rooted rom.

have a look through these and see if you can find a kernel :
https://www.google.com/search?q=SM-...es_sm=93&ie=UTF-8#q=SM-T116bu+return+to+stock
i didnt see any promising leads on google for a rom, so your only alternative may be to return to stock. have a look through these for a possible way to do that :

one small tip for future reference.
you should figure out how to fix your phone and have the tools and files on hand before making any modifications.
personally, i never do anything to my phone before thoroughly learning how to fix it, and if i cant find a way, then i dont mod it.
i see all the time on here, people frantic because they broke their phone and dont have a clue how to fix it.
in some cases there is no way to fix it because the files are not available, its really important to know that before you break it.

i never implied that you or anyone else wasnt "smart or intelligent"
i have broken my phones many times. the difference between me and a lot of users i see posting here is, i think about what would happen if i do something and it breaks the phone, before i actually do it. then i go and find out how to restore stock, and gather the files and tools first. then i actually restore stock, just so im sure i know how to do it first.
i see and help countless users here on xda, and frequently see people run to flash things they think they have to have right away. frequently that is followed by post pleading for help, because they failed to understand the journey, and chose to jump right to the finish line.
so yes, i agree, not breaking your phone doesnt make you smart or intelligent. knowing how to fix it, and helping others to fix theirs for many years, at minimum should gain those of us who help others a little respect, because we dont get paid to, nor have any obligation to, help anyone.

How come? Posting a Google link is actually helping? Then next time someone asks who's that guy, you tell him Google it. I did come here for a reason, which is finding a developer who can make a prerooted rom for me since it doesn't exist anywhere in the Web.
Anyway I found a solution I will post it here in case someone needed it:
1- Flash the tablet with stock rom (the one of your SM-T116bu) skip to 2 if you already have the stock rom and you only want to root the tablet.
2- Get a file explorer (ES explorer or root explorer).
3- Browse to system/lib and copy the whole lib folder and put it somewhere you can access it later.
4- Flash your tablet using the prerooted SM-T116nu rom (link is above).
5- Using the root explorer replace all files in the system/lib which has a 'camera' word in their name with the same files name from the lib folder of the stock rom, do the same with the files in system/lib/hw6- Reboot your device and the camera should work again.

Thanks, but your method soft bricks (black screen, can't operate the phone at all after booting) the phone until I flash the rooted or the official ROM again. There's no hw6 folder either, just hw and even changing only the lib files with camera in their names will also soft brick the phone.
I found a solution!!!
Restored my phone to the latest official ROM, then flashed the tiny file from the topic below using ODIN.

Worked like a charm!
