microsoft exchange syncing and storing emails on SD card hack problem? - Palm Treo 750

hello... i posted this on other boards but was suggested that i post here so hopefully i'll get some responses here:
i recently got a treo 750 for my boss and have it syncing with our exchange server. thats fine, everything syncs. problem is, my boss has 10,000+ email messages that i know he's going to want all on the treo. along with its megabytes and megabytes of attachments. i've read where there's a registry hack to move the inbox location from the internal memory out to the storage card. (AttachPath, and PropertyPath)
i successfully did it on my hp ipaq hw6945. but on the treo 750, it keeps renaming my storage card to storage card2, and then creating a folder called storage card which i assume is still on the internal memory. i read somewhere that the reason for that is because the messaging today plugin runs first before it recognizes that there is a storage card. so when the storage card is finally recognized and there is already a folder called storage card, it renames to storage card2. the suggestion was to disable the messaging today plugin. i did that. still renames my storage card. i then disabled all my today plugins, soft reset, and it still renames my storage card! this is getting frustrating. is it something about the treo 750 that the registry hack won't work? has anyone with a treo 750 successfully changed their inbox location from the \windows\messaging folder to their storage card?

anyone????

I posted a response to a similar question on the Treocentral forum. Basically, you'd probably need to wait for Windows Mobile 6 (if there is an upgrade for existing Treo 750 users). There is a video demo out there about this functionality, but basically WM 6 allows you to carry the last couple days or weeks worth of email. The rest is stored on your Exchange server. When you need something (email, attachments, etc), you can perform a search wherever you have network connection, and your Treo will search for that information on your Exchange server at work. This way, you can download all that you need, whenever and wherever you have a connection.

SD Card Storing Emails
I have the same problem; here is a workaround - not pretty but it's fast and works
1. before reset; use wireless manager to shut off phone
2. take out sd card (i don't really take it out; just let it snap out partway so it's no longer recognized
3. reboot
4. use file explorer to delete newly created (empty and actually on phone not SD card) folder "StorageCard2
5. put your sd card back in and it's properly recognized as StorageCard2
6. use wireless manager to turn phone back on
you can skip turning phone on/off but have to be quick with file explorer to delete the newly created StorageCard2 folder or, if activesync starts right away, you might get some email stored on this folder that you loose when you delete it.
My understanding is that, when WM boots, the registry entry is looking for StorageCard2 before the drivers to find the card are loaded so it creates the folder in RAM. I'm not aware of any permanent fix other that the above workaround with each reset. Fortunately, don't reset that often so this isn't a big issue

Just a quick comment, guys.
As far as I know the only registry setting causing mentioned issue is PropertyPath. AttachPath works fine (at least for me and my Treo 750).

Email & Storage Card 2 !
I posted this at treocetral, hope it helps.
Email & Storage Card 2 !
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
OK here goes,
For anyone with lots of emails and attachments this is relevent. I have been trying for 3 days to work out storing the email, email attachments and internet explorer temopory files on the mini sd card. As most who try this know that windows does not play well and continues to create a new folder called storage card and displaced the actual storage card as storage card 2.
This creates many problems. Any installed program will not work from the icon or shortcut as it points to the wrong place and the files intended to now be stored on the storage card are actually on a folder called storage card in the device root (not saving the intended space). In addition the new folder is locked by processes like active sync, ie, or the today screen messaging plug-in. Very problematic. There are lots of discussion about solutions from disabling the plug-in and manually hacking the registry. I have tried smart phone tweaker, tweaker 2k and direct registry edits. All of which do not help.
The final solution I have discovered is as follows.
01. Place the internet explorer temp files back on the device in the windows folder. This seems to be the biggest problem that locks the files. I do not do so much browsing that these files arevery big or add up quickly.
02. Placed the emails back on the device in the windows sub-folder. As these are text and not html they do not take up much room.
03. Now for the attachments. Mine are 37 MB! This is the meat of the problem. I went into the registry and only changed the AttachPath to the storage card and it worked. This saves me 37 MB on the device and does not yet force the new storage card/storage card2 problem.
I have not included all the registry keys and paths as a quick Google search will bring them up.
I just though people should know. What a pain in the rear, but now it is better.
Regards

The reason why you are having the problem is because you chose the option to store the messages on your memorycard while the memory card was not inserted in the device. It went looking for "storage card" and couldn't find it, so the OS naturally creaded the directory so the e-mail could function. Afterwards when you did insert the memory card, the file system naturally named it "storage card2" because it loads it as a virtual folder and "storage card" was already taken. If you delete "storage card" which is located on the device, your memory card will automatically change it's name from "storage card2" to "storage card". That's a quick fix. The only problem you may run into would be if you have programs installed to the memory card. Those programs will look for files on the card assuming it's still "storage card2". I ran into the same issue, deleted the "storage card" folder and fixed my e-mail issue. But right after I had to hard reset to reinstall all my programs on the card to get them working again. Have fun...

contacts file

dunno if anyone knows...
i was in a situation tonight, a friend of mines sim card is begining to go bad. since our phones are capable of more than they appear, i wanted to copy his sims phone #s to my phone as a backup, to my contacts list
after a hour of looking i could not find the contacts list database file
does it exist as a regular file anywhere ?
what i ended up doing, i had a extra sim card on me, so i copied all my phone #s from my contacts to my sim card
deleted all my phone #s from my contacts
put his card in
copied his sim card to my contacts
put the blank sim card in and copied from contacts back to sim
but it would have been nice to just rename my contacts db, make a new one, copy his in, rename his and back it up to a sd card, then rename mine to bring everything back to normal
so... does anyone know if the contacts list is stored in some sort of database file ? and if so, where is it / whats it called ?
if not, this might be room for a new program / mod / hack
-Mario
What you where looking for, though years ago, was the PIM.VOL file in the root of the device.
You can copy this over with Total Commander and also overwrite it when copying it back (or better to rename original first then copy new pim.vol over to root, wait 20 second then reset device)

Mails on Storage Card

Hi
Does somebody knows how to save mails directly on storage card.
I've forgot how to do that, but I still remember that I did that with adding things in the registry
Sorry if this has been asked 200 times, but I can't found anything about it via Search function
Thanks in advance
Would moving them to SD stop them from being auto-deleted? The problem i have is that when i send & receive i can see my new mail. But when i send and receive again all old emails are deleted without asking.
There was a Registry hack, which save your mails on your Storage card instead on your phone memory.
But I can't find it anymore

On my Universal, there is an option settings for that under the Message Application. No need for a hack.

Flash Disk and programs that can use Storage Card

I'm currently using the PDAViet 6.1 ROM. I'm very happy with this ROM but have one issue I haven't been able to figure out. Several of the newer WM 6.1 ROMs have a Flash Disk area that shows up like a storage card. Several programs such as Outlook or Live Search can use a storage card for attachments, cache, etc. My problem is that the settings screens for the programs only give the option of using storage card or internal memory. If you select storage card it will default to the first storage card, the flash disk, instead of the much larger SD card. Is there any way to tell these programs to use the SD card instead of the Flash Disk? Or, is there any way to change the order that the storage areas show up in so that the SD card would appear in the list before the Flash disk?
Is it only "Storage" instead of "Storage Card"? If yes, it is the Extended ROM, which developers usually reveal and unlock in order to customize their ROMs before release. Just before uploading, they lock it back, but re-hiding it is notoriously difficult.
So, don't worry, you can't use it for anything, 'cause locked, you can only browse it. However, I would consider another ROM, because a visible ExtROM is known to cause problems with several applications, such as mail, if it is set to use a Storage Card to store attachments.
Hope this cleared things up a bit...
This is a description from another thread:
What is Flash disk (FD)?
FD is the additional space usually un-utilized in the ROM (nk.nba). FD has no effect to the space allocated for regular storage (36 - 40 MB). Having FD means, your net storage is: Regular storage + FD. i.e. 40 + 15 = 55 MB.
So, I believe you are right that I will need to use another ROM to resolve this issue. Its a shame, I really like everything else about this one. Hopefully PDAVIET and others will see the light that a few MB in the grand scheme of things isn't that important when SD cards are getting cheaper.
Thanks for the reply.
This is what this forum is for: to help each other!
Could you post a link to the thread you got the definition from?
I always thought the flash disk was the application used to host the SD card through the USB, making the Uni function as an SD card reader...
Anyway, that unused space can't be utilized since the ExtROM is usually hidden, or at least locked. There exists a program to unhide and unlock this area, which, when cleared, gives an extra 10-15 MB of storage space, but might still cause problems with some applications, mostly Outlook.
The quote is from the second post of the thread for Ranju's WM 6.1 ROM, which is similar to the PDAVIET ROM I am using. Several of the 6.1 ROMs appear to have this Flash Disk "feature".

To store attachments and/or the e-mail messages themselves in the storage card in WM6/WM6.1, perform the following tasks:
1 - Go to the Storage tab in the mail options, tick the "When available, use this storage card to store attachments" box, prior to perform the changes I'll suggest, because, at the moment you do that, your system will redirect it to your extended ROM (or flash disk) in the registry. When you perform the changes, you'll overwrite those settings afterwards. And don't worry that, when you go back to check those mail options, it will keep showing a small ammount at "Current size of attachments". Your data will be saved to your storage card, anyway;
2 - Create a folder and a subfolder in your card, e.g. "\Storage Cardi\Inbox\" and "\Storage Card\Inbox\Attachments\" (without the quotes);
3 - Include the following keys at "HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings" (all without quotes, as well):
- "AttachPath", with value (string) = "\Storage Card\Inbox\Attachments", for the attachments;
- "PropertyPath", with value (string) = "\Storage Card\Inbox", for the messages themselves.
4 -Soft reset your device.
Hope it works for you...
Cheers!
Carlos
Thanks, that works... sort of.
After following your instructions and a soft reset I get a folder named "Storage Card" with a normal folder icon and a folder named "Storage Card 2" with the SD folder icon. "Storage Card" contains an Inbox and Inbox/Attachments folder. "Storage Card 2" is my SD card with the Inbox and Inbox/Attachments folders I created. After sending myself a test email outlook is using the folders in "Storage Card", which appears to be on internal memory and not the folders on my SD card.
So I removed my SD card, which made the "Storage Card 2" disappear. I then manually deleted the remaining "Storage Card" folder. Next I reinserted my SD card and "Storage Card" reappeared in File Explorer with the appropriate icon. Now when I check my email everything works as expected with attachments going to the SD card.
Problem is that "Storage Card" and "Storage Card 2" reappear after a soft reset and I have to go through removing the SD card, deleting the folder, etc all over again.

I'm having the exact same issue with my JASJAR (Universal) running Ranju v7.7 WM6.1 ROM. Has anyone found a resolution? Does anyone know how to Hide or completely Disable that stupid "Flash Disk." I tried renaming it with SKTools, to xxFlash Disk so the actual SD Card can be seen 1st by the messaging app, but it still shows Flash Disk in file explorer.

I had the exact same problem. Here's how to resolve it:
-Disable the MESSAGING PLUG-IN. (You can use some other plug-in to count your unread messages on your today screen, like PhoneWeaver, Wisbar, Phone Alarm, etc, etc.)
-Eject SD Card
-Delete StorageCard (folder that actually exists on main memory)
-Insert SD Card
-Soft Reset
-The Storage Card 2 issue shouldn't be there anymore!

Storing incoming email to storage card

Does anyone know of a way to change the location where incoming email is stored? I'd like it to go to my storage card since there's a lot more space there.
Did a quick search but I haven't found anything conclusive.
I would think there's got to be a registry key hidden somewhere.
Thanks,
Devan
What about going into Messages, options, and select "store in storage card"?
doesn't seem to be hidden oO
I'd love an option like that
On my TyTn II if I open the menu from my mailbox and go to tools->options the only thing I see that resembles this is the "when available, use the storage card to store attachments" option box under the storage tab.
Is this around where you were expecting to see this?
THat only stores the attachments
I posted the CAB in this post before

Check this link. It works for me.

I had put this in the Wiki several months ago... It worked for me in WM6.
Change the location of email and attachments
When reading and sending email in Pocket Outlook, emails and their attachments are saved in the device's internal storage by default. You can change this location to, for example, your Storage Card:
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MAPI\PropertyPath = "\Storage Card\Mail" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
(For Windows Mobile 6 use -- HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings\PropertyPath)
(HKCU\Software\Microsoft\MAPI\AttachPath = "\Storage Card\Mail\Attachments" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)
Looks like I got the registry settings right from Ather's cabs but still trouble , the registry settings look right but my storage card has been renamed to "Storage Card2" and I cannot replace the new "Storage Card" folder with my actual storage card. I tried renaming the new folder and a soft reset but it just created another. Attempting the rename "Storage Card2" to "Storage Card" fails.
Anyone else have to tackle this one?
Thanks,
Devan

Same thing with me... i just cant get back to normal with storage card. I also did alternate way and followed the steps given at link http://www.modaco.com/content/jupit...-and-attachments-to-storage-card/#entry837895
but no luck. It doesnt get back to normal
1) Rename the folder "Storage Card" to something else. (say "foo").
2) Remove your memory card
3) Soft reset
4) Insert the storage card, it should now become "Storage Card" instead of "Storage Card2"
Got the same error earlier. Thanks alot for the solution!
Now back to norm

Live Mesh problem: won't sync folders on (some) cards

I've just started using Live Mesh, which I love, but there's a weird bug (or known limitation?)...
My phone (HTC P6500) has three memory cards: one is the internal (non-removable) NAND Flash; the other two are SD cards. I'm able to sync directories in the NAND Flash without any problem. But when I try to sync a directory on one of the other cards (listed as "Storage Card" and "Storage Card2"), it seems to add the directory to the Sync list without a problem, but rather than actually sync that directory, it creates a new empty directory of the same name under \NAND Flash\Live Folders\ and then syncs that (empty) directory.
Any ideas on a way around this?
Thanks!
Alan
