Business Card Scanner Software for Handhelds - General Topics

Hello,
I came across a new phone released in India last month that has this interesting feature..... an inbuilt business card scanner.
check out the specs at http://www.spicemobile.in/model_fer_s1000.aspx
I did some further browsing and came across some sites with softwares that claim to do the same except that they use the 2.0 MP camera as an OCR device and captures the business card, extracts the data and saves it in Pocket Outlook to be saved for synchronizing in Outlook 2000 and above.
Does anyone have any experience using this type of software?????

Microsoft Reader Factivation

I not know anybody do it before, if no it is long over due.
Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC is here long as I remember, it it nice reader but their activation method are pain in [email protected]@ if you use their Internet Explorer it many time fail complete activation (you can no use other browser because it is Microsoft and use AX, MS think *nix users must go [email protected] themself?).
And you can activate 6 devices maximum, very generous Microsoft!
Here solution:
Perpetual Activation for Microsoft Reader
It is no hacking.
I simply take advantage of Activation Process "logic hole", it is all.
Up when they change activation proceses (doubt) or patch MS Reader on next ad hoc version (more possible, but it required full build *and* it not stop this activation work on Windows Mobile with MS Reader 2.4.x installated).
This NO is keygen, crack or warez.
I find it (literary) in Microsoft, is all I can say.
Name it "factivation" from Freedom Activation (or [email protected] your stupid activations, Bill...)
I want post it with my real name, but I change mind, one never know what future is next, and law change every day
Install Microsoft Reader for Pocket PC
reboot
Install Microsoft Reader Factivation
have MS Reader activated at open.
It is all.
work on: Pocket PC Windows Mobile 2003, 2003 SE, WM5, WM6, WM6.1 (tested) with Microsoft Reader version 2.4.1
It may will work on WM 2002 if use Microsoft Reader version 2.4 and not the old one (no tested but may work).
Sorry my english!
note:
This software not violate any EU Law in my knowledge.
It may violate laws in other countries (USA?)
It publish here as proof of concept.

Update on the M$ website
Please note that we have recently posted an update of the Pocket PC/Pocket PC Phone Edition version of Microsoft Reader.
This update addresses activation problems experienced by the users of some Windows Mobile 5.0 and 6.0 Phone Edition devices. In addition we have made it easier to use Microsoft Reader with device storage cards

I have tried to activate my Titan since MS updated to make activation "easier", and just like in the past it didn't work with two separate attempts. I would love to tell the useless MS Reader team where to go. As of now I am through with that crappy product and have switched over to eReader - simple activation that always works and a better UI. I just wish I could get the money back for all the .lit format books I've bought over the years.
/edited (because exploit works)
Cool Exploit, thanks for sharing.
I put this in a cab with MSReader and it seems to work great!
didn't work
I tried the instructions as described above on my ATT Fuze (winmo 6.1) and it didn't activate my copy of MS Reader.

Surely Your Cab is fine, but not rof my device/rom/sw.
Anyone has some other ideas?
Anyway, my device is HTC Touch Diamond with default ITA H3G Rom 6.1, MS Reader 2.41.

It works great on all WinMo 2003SE/5/6.1 PocketPCs I have, all with the latest MS Reader 2.4.1 from microsoft's website.
I'd say PM the author if it doesn't work on your device, maybe there are some variables he (she?) have missed?
Didn't work on my Fuze either but did work on my Kaiser.
Oh well...
Call me ignorant ...

I was looking to make MS Reader more touch screen friendly on my htc Diamond (like go to next page on swipe right for example) and my google search turned up this thread. It greatly interested me (even though it wasn't what I was looking for) as I've had problems with my MS activation for some time (on another device). The big problem is that I don't know the heck as to what I'm doing (in this sense). Please excue my ignorance. While I know a fair bit about a lot of things IT this has me confused (outside my area of expertiese no doubt). The contents of the compressed file don't contain anything that looks like I can install it except "_setup.xml".
How does one run "_setup.xml"?
Just like any .exe file?
I've already run a search on this site to try to figure it out but my search foo must be weak because I'm none the wiser.
Any help would be appreciated

From what I understand you have unpacked .cab file (which you shouldn't - it is not .zip or .rar compressed archive, although it may look like one on your PC if you have winzip or winrar set as default viewer for .cab files).
Just copy the .cab file to your WinMo device and double tap on it, that's what you should do.
downloaded will test it later..
and hey mate
thanks for this.. :-D
worked like a charm thanks!
It works on HD2 and 2.4.2 USA version (Italian version and others are in 2.4.1)
Really great!!!!!
Great application -- thanks a lot!

Windows Mobile Contacts

Hi everyone,
I'm not really new to Windows Mobile and I have a Gigabyte GSmart i120 device (Windows Mobile 6) but every time I read Windows Mobile reviews from gsmarena I get confused:
When talking about the phone book, on page 4 of HTC Touch HD review for example, it is always mentioned that "if you ever feel that the existing contact fields are not enough, you can always rename some of the existing ones and use them instead"
Can anyone guide me with this issue? Because until now, I've only seen Inesoft AddressBook which is capable of renaming the existing fields... but renaming the fields doesn't cause them to appear in the standard Windows Mobile contacts and only Inesoft can read them as fields (not just notes) .... ??????
Please everyone, I'm very very curious to know ...
I am relatively new to Windows mobile, having acquired an X1 in January this year, coming from Symbian UIQ. Having read that very same statement elsewhere, I was suprised and disappointed to find out that was not the case, and ended up saving contacts with multiple mobile numbers as car, pager and such. I'd be very happy if someone told me how or if at all that is possible?

There are several development approaches based on the smart and lean programming language Basic4PPC by Erel Uziel: look into the forum and search for "barcode". Most are based on the barcode reader library and the tool by QUICKMARK
There is a free trial of QuickMark. I bought a license for 5 bucks and use it to feed my own built product inspector web service via http
For serious usage, e.g. stock/store management or supply chain stuff, I recommend to buy a industry-enabled device. So did I because reading cam pictures was sloppy, slow and faulty.

REQ: BCR APP Really useable in HD2?

Hi guys!
I've come to use from time to time the BCR (Business Card Reader) APP bundled in recent HTC devices.
HD was "bearable", however the HD2 one, even with its 5 MP+autofocus+dual flash camera, has dropped the ball, since it's almost useless (I know of no one getting a single card completely and properly recognized), so I wonder if anyone has got any "older" BCR version to work on the HD2, or any similar SW BTW.
Any hint would be greatly appreciated.
I even bought a dedicated OCR card scanner, (close to 100 $ !!) but performace is also poor and inconvenient (wait till you get back to your office from a business trip, with a few dozens cards to scan..........)
Thanks in advance.
Regards.
The OCR capabilities of WorldCard Mobile are real big sh*t.
I painfully need WORKING business card recognition software for Windows Mobile.
For now much better way is only to save the photos of the business card without terrible recognition of WorldCard Mobile.
I have experience with ABBYY FINE READER and can say - it's the best.
But ABBYY Business Card Reader not available for Windows Mobile

Thanks for your advice, I'll try to find the ABBY BCR, though some others are available for PCs.
Just a shame HTC did bundle such a useless piece of crap into the HD2.

or if the programs are available please tell me how to get them?
I also noticed my email inbox looks like it never left the 90's. Html emails are not being displayed and pictures are not loading automatically.

Okay... look here for all the apps we use on our hd2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=603880
On Windows Mobile.. you can look for apps outside of the "marketplace".. you download them as a .cab file (on pc or phone) and place them on the sd card if you want... which out the box is unique to windows mobile (doesn't eat up phone memory (but not that we lack it on the new hd2 lol))
Once the .cab file is on your phone/sd card... in the phone you go to file explorer (in the start menu)... click on it and navigate to where you placed the .cab file and run it. You can save the installation to the "device" because there is plenty of memory and tends to run better.
To awnser your questions;
[1] Google voice idk, but im sure google will have a wm app out soon (if not already, im not 'in' google voice so dunno)
[2] Last.fm Googling around a bit i see they (or someone) released a windows mobile app in 2008, but all links to it trow a 404, so check out their mobile forums, specifically this sticky
[3] Pandora, just read this; http://www.pandora.com/on-windowsmobile (Point your mobile phone's browser to www.pandora.com)
[4] Incomplete emails Thats just a setting since most people use gprs/hsdpa, im sure you can change it, either somewhere in the settings or trough a registry edit
Though i just have to say/write this, DONT GET ME WRONG but honestly, you shouldn't try to make this like your iPhone, although Microsoft/HTC are clearly trying to 'collect' some iPhone users, overall the HD2 isn't user friendly enough to be a iPhone (yes i sayd it) That doesn't mean you shouldn't stick with the HD2 though, just forget the iPhone
To put some strength behind my 'user friendly' statement, if your ROM is from before 1.66, the HD2 will have quite some silly bugs, like SMS messages that get stuck in the outbox but only (if your lucky) send 3 weeks later, problems with the camera, not beeing able to read/write large miniSD cards & more.
On the other hand, if your in any way IT related or just in general good with computers, this is currently the best phone on the market (counting HD2 and HD2b as one) it does the latest wireless connection methods, has build-in gps, compass and g-sensor, a 1ghz gpu, a 'gpu' (kinda) and more geeky features, and hey, it can emulate most psx games at full speed (www.fpsece.net)
I'd just strongly suggest you to get a new ROM from the HTC site, assuming you have a device with pre 1.66
I hope the above helped a bit, not trying to make windows mobile even more confusing for you, just trying to tell you that it cant really be compared to iPhone/Android, it can be compared to windows, there are actually millions of apps, nobody ever felt the need for a windows marketplace until iPhone got one and Microsoft had to compete, at which they currently fail hard i agree, the windows marketplace thing is a joke, just use google.
