[Q] [Help] Nexus 5 random boot loop issue

First, here are some details of my Nexus 5:
32GB Black. D821 International Model
I'm currently living in Malaysia. My relative bought the device from Google Play Australia and brought it over to me
early adopter - I got the first hardware batch.
stock, unrooted, locked bootloader
no modifications except for
1. installing USB OTG helper apps (which seemed to harmlessly change my file directories a little (?))
a) USB Stick Plugin-TC
b) Total Commander
2. installing AOSP Kit Kat launcher ported from Nexus 4
I have actually refrained for quite some time from posting this issue which I found has been pointed out several places in the forums. But I'm at a loss. I have checked many of the threads and posts using the search function but I can't seem to find a definite answer to my unique problem.
My problem:
My Nexus 5 just died on me. It suddenly reboots in my pocket and entered into a boot loop. It continuously showed the Google screen and blacked out again. Occasionally it showed the boot animation for a while but blacked out again. And if I left it alone without attempting to turn it on, it will suddenly reboot normally to my lock screen and my homescreen (as if nothing happened), but the screen will turn black sooner or later and it's back in a boot loop again.
I can't even enter recovery mode normally because when I enter fastboot mode (this fails several times too), the screen will go black before I can select recovery mode with the volume keys. The bootloop cycle is too quick and fast-paced for me to even do anything. It's an endless frustrating cycle.
This is the second time it has happened. The first time, however, it came back from the dead as mysteriously as it died. I hurriedly factory reset and wiped dalvik-cache and cache. It stayed working for more than a week. I thought the problem has gone away. It did not, unfortunately, and I should have done more such as unlocking the bootloader, flashing factory images, etc. But I didn't and now I'm in a fix. This time (the 2nd time) it just stayed non-functional. I'm not even sure whether it's a software or a hardware problem.
There's also the issue of which methods to choose to solve the problem. I need help to choose which one.
Method 1:
Solve it yourself (software fix) perhaps by flashing the device's factory images through help from XDA Developers Forum. But I need to find a way to go around the issue that I can't enter fastboot or recovery. My warranty may also be affected, which may affect Method 2 mentioned below.
Method 2:
Request Google and/or LG for a replacement (hardware fix). Problem is, I'm over the return period (15 days) and I'm currently in Malaysia. It's going to be a hassle to go through my relative again for shipping and handling. I am also not familiar with the procedure.
I'm new to rooting and hacking, and it's the first time since I got a device from overseas. I don't know what to do.
Any help and advice will be very much appreciated.
UPDATE: the phone came back from the dead again as mysteriously as it died. And curiously at exactly 50% battery. With all my data intact, as if nothing happened. I think it's a hardware problem and will probably be requesting a replacement from Google/LG (Method 2)
I have the same problem. Did you able to solve it?
Did you get a replacement ?
Please help me. THank you
I need a replacement, no other feasible options.

I happen to come across this while researching about the problem:

I believe it's a hardware level defect with the eMMC. It keeps working fine again until it attempts to write some important file to that exact sector of the internal memory. Then it corrupts again and back to the boot loop.
When I had a defective unit, the longest it'd last before looping again was 20 days. Sometimes as few as five hours. If it spontaneously starts looping again - it's a hardware problem and there's no fix. You need a replacement.

I hope my replacement unit comes out alright, as I need to deal with shipping charges to and fro Malaysia and Australia. On the plus side, I'll be receiving the newer hardware revision of the Nexus 5!
Below is the email I sent to Google Play Support, and his reply :

Hi Trent,
I have other things to add in regarding the newer replacement device.
I also have other (very minor) issues with my Nexus 5:
1. rattly power and volume keys
2. display backlight bleed at the top and sides
3. SIM tray not properly flush with the sides with dust managing the fill in the gaps
Is it true that there are newer hardware revisions of the Nexus 5 as mentioned in this website here?
http://crave.cnet.co.uk/mobiles/lg-tweaks-nexus-5-hardware-new-model-shipping-now-50013020/
[Accessed: 25 Jan 2014]
The newer hardware revision of the device supposedly has stiffer buttons, larger speaker drill holes, slightly better design of the SIM tray, and unfortunately a slightly yellower display.
I'm not sure of whether I'll be given this "newer hardware revision" should I replace my current device with another one.
Sincerely,
Benjamin Lau

Hello Benjamin,
Thank you for contacting Google and providing me the requested information. In answer to your question, yes, you will be receiving the "revamped" Nexus 5 that you read about as a replacement for your faulty one.

Trent

UPDATE: The phone died for the 3rd time before I can create some minor last-minute backups and proceed with a complete factory data reset.
The newer version of the N5 has no difference from the older ones except production date. Fyi i have a perfect 310k
As for your Q if flashing factory image through fastboot can't do it then i think you would have to rma.

Question about gear 2 warranty

I bought my gear 2 on september 9 last year, on june 2015 i had problems with it, the charging pins on the back of the watch were wearing off until one of the pins wore off completely and it wont charge, sent it in to samsung service and they replaced my watch, now im starting to have the same issue about the pins wearing off, can i file another service claim again, also today is the last day of my warranty which is a year, so I have a question, if i file the service claim today, will i still be covered by the warranty, even though samsung wont get my watch until ups deliver it to them, which is a few days away,by then my warranty will be expired, so will samsung go by the service claim date, or am I out of luck, thanks guys.
I have the same problem, today I give back at the shop I bought it from and they said it might charge me in service because they said it's damage. Seriously?!

I have the same problem.
Mine came back unrepaired
Using Samsung chat, email and phone call with the support service... No success.
Seems to be a design failure!
I changed a new Gear2 twice during 1 year 6 months. Samsung Service Center changeg a new one for me. First on March 2015 and again on September 2015.
I think it's a problem with the charger that damage the charging pin (I lost the first pin twice.) so they change at once.

You said they replaced your gear 2 twice during 1 year 6 months, does it mean the gear 2 has a 2 year warranty? They gave me a new one on july 2015, and i has happened again, the first charging pin is gone, will call them today, thanks.

Just Bought Honor 8 - Manufactured December 2016

Hi! I recently bought an Honor 8 from Bestbuy.com and am very much enjoying the phone. But I did notice that the phone was manufactured over 10 months ago, in December 2016. Should I be worried that the phone was created so long ago? Has anyone else who recently purchased this model noticed the same thing? Should I be worried that my battery life will be reduced due to this?
Thank you in advance for any insight you can provide. It's very much appreciated.
Where did you see the manufacturing date on the box? I just bought my third honor 8 a couple of days ago and I would not mind knowing when mine was produced. Please let me know if you don't mind how you found that.
To answer your question your battery life will be more than fine bcause there has been no use on it to strain it from it's original state. Your phone is totally okay as it just means it was produced new 10 months ago and it remained that way until you first plugged it in to charge therefore starting your true battery life span. So you have nothing to worry about whether your phone was produced 4 months ago or 10 months ago the fact is that it's still brand new meaning nothing has altered it's original new state that it was in until you opened it up and started using it. At that point it no longer remained new free of any usage.
Do let me know where you found your production date. I bought a Pearl White 64g and I'd like to know when mine was produced too. Thanks.
Hi Dconn1975,
Thanks so much for your reply. It makes me feel a lot better.
I found a date 2 different places on my phone, although they were a few days apart. The first place I noticed one was on the back of my phone. There is a very tiny bar code and it says Date: 2016-12-22. But then I researched more and found that the date is found in the phone's serial number:
From the serial number (S/N) you will find:
Pos 6-7: Year
Pos 8: Month (Oct=A, Nov=B, Dec=C)
Pos 9-10: Date
You can find your Serial Number under settings -> about phone -> status
This indicated my phone was made on 12/18/2016. Hope this helps!
Thanks a bunch. I'll have to check and see when my phone was produced. I was still running 5.0 so I think I'll be in a similar situation as you are. Thanks again and I'm glad I was able to help you.

Mine is 1692 , so i guess the month of production isn't necessarily expressed by a letter. Btw, I bought it in late October last year.
Hi! The month is only a letter if it's October, November, or December. Otherwise it's the number that goes with the month. So if you see 1692, that was made in 2016, the month of September (that's the 9) and a day in the 20's. You'll need the number after the 2 to know the exact date.
I wouldn't worry. Mine was manufactured Oct 12, 2016 and it's been solid as a rock.

Nov 6 OTA takes forever

I just received the Nov 6 OTA. It took over 30 minutes. I haven't used it much yet so I don't have anything else to add.

Question takes almost a half hour to check for updates

I got the S21 plus last week. I went to check if I got the Feb 1 security update. It takes the phone a full 27 minutes just to check for updates. This is not normal. I tried just about all the fixes imaginable with no success. Any thoughts? I have the Verizon edition.
