Monocube’s SafeMode 2 out – now, it’s WM5-compliant! - General Topics

You’ve installed a new application and, now, can’t boot in your Pocket PC? Ever wondered how you can boot into a Safe Mode similar to the desktop Windows Safe Mode to disable all third-party applications and services? Read this!
In the (highly recommended if you still haven't read it!) Safe Mode Bible, I’ve explained what Safe Mode applications there have been on the Pocket PC. Back then, in September, there were only three of them: the built-in Safe Mode in the commercial Spb Pocket Plus and iLauncher 3 and, finally, the, then, free but not WM5-compliant, 1-series of SafeMode by monoCube (mCube).

The author of the latter has just released a WM5-compliant, greatly enhanced version of SafeMode. It has every bells and whistles and is, right now (before the release a new version of SKTools, which is rumored to receive safe mode capabilities some time), the most safe application because it’s able to filter:
INIT applications - these are low level applications, such as older versions of "Mad Programmer’s ForceHiRes" or "XCPUScalar"
Services - these are system applications; they are not visible with the task manager, and generally run in the background
Startup applications - startup links, placed in "Windows\Startup"
Today plugins - SafeMode 2 disables all Today plugins, replacing it with it's own interface, as a reminder you're running in SafeMode
Input methods - all non-standard Input methods (custom keyboards etc) are disabled
Pocket Internet Explorer plugins (such as MultiIE)
Other extensions, found in system registry
Unfortunately, it’s no longer free: it costs $6.95. There’s an unrestricted 14-day version available.
Please visit the homepage of the application HERE for more information / for the download.

SKTools 3.1.1.4 released – with a greatly enhanced registry editor!

I love writing detailed software reviews, in which I mercilessly point out problems even in top-rated, really high-quality products pf decent, capable developers. The vast majority of developers (yeah, I sometimes also receive flames) do read my reviews and try to improve on the problems I point out. This is advantageous for the entire Pocket PC community: after all, solid software products are released, which really add a lot to the usability of these devices.

One of the, in this respect, most responsive companies are the S-K folks, the developers of, without doubt, the best all-in-one Pocket PC tool, SKTools. It was just a few days ago that, upon reviewing the, then, brand new 3.1.1.1 version I’ve pointed out it the missing functionality in the newly-added registry editor module. The excellent S-K folks didn’t leave it at that: they have implemented all this stuff at once, and released a public beta (available for download here), in which, as of the current (3.1.1.4) version,
binary search has been implemented; you can even switch between Unicode, ASCII and hexa (!) searches (see the above screenshot)
hexadecimal DWORD value editing is already allowed
support for importing REGEDIT4 files (in addition to version 5) added
This utility is getting better and better – now, in some respects (see for example hexadecimal or ASCII searches inside binary data), it’s better than Resco Registry Editor!

A sollution to using special/local characters with e.g. LogMeIn

Have you ever had a keyboard that is missing some keys?
Do you need localized characters on a keyboard that does not have them?
Perhaps you are using software like LogMeIn or GoToMyPC which doesn't support some Unicode characters (especially while using a Pocket PC)?
KeyReplacer monitors the keys pressed on the keyboard. If you enter a "receive key combination" the program will replace the written characters with the "Replace with" string. For example: You write ".aa" and the program erases ".aa" and replaces it with "å".
(Warning! The program can also be used for having some fun... )
It also features simple open and save functions. It stores the configurations in ini-files. Sometimes you want KeyReplacer to start a program on startup or after reboots automatically. This is easily solved by creating a shortcut where the target is set to something like this:
"c:\path-to-program\keyreplacer.exe" "c:\mykeysettings.ini"
Clicking the minimize button will minimize KeyReplacer to the System Tray.

This app is one of its kind in what it does. Unlike every other browser, this one allows you to run each site in its own sandboxed environment. Not just that, you can also configure the settings for each site separately, something not possible with any other browser.
Here is a short comparison:
You can create lite apps for each site which are extremely light on system resources. This is especially useful for budget and old devices. Even for new flagship devices, this is an excellent alternative to installing spyware apps like Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc.
The app provides a launcher for the lite apps, but you can also choose to add shortcuts to the lite apps directly on your home-screen:
Here are the privacy settings that can be configured for each site (lite app) separately:
There are other settings too.
