Q: Push Email and Data Charges - General Topics

Just curious? If I have Push Email set to ON. My device will connect to GPRS/3G then download my emails right? Now after it is done downloading I noticed the connection is not closed. At this 'connected but not active' state is data being used/exchange between my provider and my device? When a device powers down to standby is this connection terminated [and therefore billing should stop, right?] or is the device still connected to the data service? I'm asking because we don't have use all you want data plans here in Manila. My 1st provider SMART charges PhP 10.00/30 mins and the 2nd Globe uses PhP 0.13/1Kb of data. So I am thinking which provider to use for Push Email... at the moment it seems that Globe should be used for Push and Smart for surfing, am I reading the situation correctly? Any expert knowledge on Data and how it interacts with our devices will be greatly appreciated.

Automatic network disconnection if not used

Hi guys,
I've just configured my email account to check this functionality on TP.
Mail checking is configured to get new emails for every 2h so connection is automatically estabilished for 3G or sth.
Now I need solution and I'm wondering if there is any option to get this session disconnected if not used lets say for 3min.
Is quite important to disconnect session IF NOT USED (no data transfer) no just 3min after connection was established.
I've found such option in AdvancedConfig 3.3 but I'm wondering how it works ?
Any ideas how to do it ?
Regards
B.
Why do you want to end the data connection. When idle, it will not use any data and will not drain the battery. Mine is always active and it saves the time spent negotiating with the network when you want to access the email.
I'm not sure all operators allow the Data connection active cost free. mine doesn't take out any costs for data session beeing active and idle so I don't mind, and the batterydrain is minimal.

Killing Data Connections

Is there any way to kill all data connections? I have no data plan, and this phone constantly just wants to connect to Edge and 3G for some reason. I am a student at a University where the entire campus is wireless, so I don't need a data plan. But still, it prefers to connect a lot and cost me money. Is there something I can disable to shut off these connections. I still want to be able to send and receive MMS texts though. AT&T said they could shut it off but I wouldnt be able to send or receive MMS. Any ideas?
Go to start>settings>connections>connections>manage existing connections, press and hold on MEdiaNet and select delete. Once this has been deleted it will no longer try to use this connection.
I believe that would also disable mms. the best bet is to use a third party app like gprs monitor from spb or modaco nodata.

====How to ...===

Open a topic in which who has asked you to do so without the need to open a new topic.
So, first question: would be how could i make you can surf the internet on mobile but at the same time to be called?
T'ks.
You must be talking about browsing via GPRS, and that depends on your provider.
I believe, it's technically impossible to have a call and browse web via GPRS at the same time. Some providers offer work-arounds as additional services, for example if you got a call, GPRS connection gets interrupted and continues after the call.
So if you need this badly, check your provider's additional services, or surf via Wi-Fi
Another opinion?
In Russia most large federal operators claim that calls can be made and accepted during a GPRS/EDGE session. On my Tornado I always have EDGE icon on (that means I'm registered in EDGE network) and answer incoming calls without problems. The only time when I can be temporarily inaccessible is the moment when the phone is downloading something. E.g. any Forex program that is downloading data continuously. When I exit it - everything's fine again.
But I partially agree with Pasimetes that it is provider-dependent. It may work worse with some regional operators.
It's part of GSM specification. Check this:

search for 'class B' (i got no idea where i found it's 'B', it was long time ago, maybe here:

Recieve Pic Texts without data connection?

I have blocked out my data connection at alltel because i dont have a data connection plan and dont want to go over my minutes and all that. So my question is, is there any way to get picture/video messages without the data connection (it dials #777 when trying to connect and fails)? I dont really want to pay for the data connection for picture messages but dont want to drive a Ferrari in first gear.
I'm not sure, but i think it's not possible. Sorry to be so little help.
You can easily stop your phone from connecting to cell data services, under connections tell it to connect to "my isp" or "my work network". You can unblock the data services and just use wifi, I don't think they'll charge you for the data mms uses. At least that's the wafy i do it on att, and i don't get charged for data usage.

You recieve MMS through wifi? i don't think thats possible, MMS has to go through the network.
Do u have a messaging plan? because with at&t pic and video messages are included in your messaging plan so you don't need to have a data plan and.
BUT it does state in the fine print that any pic/vid message over 300k will be billed per kb but i've sent and recieved MMS way over 300k and never incurred any additional charges on my bill (which may be due to the fact that i have an unlimitted data plan but not sure).

Can I turn off data plan access on AT&T Smart Phone?

So I've had this HTC S743 for about 5 days and I thought I had it setup correctly to use wifi for data comm.
wifi enabled and selected to use my home network. I can see the radio tower status icon and my locally named network is also displayed.
Under the comm manager the data connection is off.
I have a very simple $45/mo plan with no monthly data plan.
Over the last 5 days I have been surfing the web a bit did some email tests with my ISP and used the on board GPS app which is horrible. Not heavy usage but experimentation to see if I like how the phone works.
After 2 days I get an email from AT&T that I have extremely high data usage exceeding my account limit (for having no monthly plan) and that I should sign up for a data plan at once.
$29 over 2 days for this little bit of fluff? A total of 2,900kb in data.
So I call up AT&T and they tell me this and that and want me to sign up for a plan which I may do. But I want to be able to know that the datacomm is happening via WIFI when I can see a selected WIFI is in service.
They also told me that all GPS data is forced through 3G and bypasses WIFI???
Can anyone here give me an idea about what I may be doing wrong and whether AT&T is correct about the GPS service?
Is there a better GPS app that doesn't do this? This one pretty much stinks anyway. A resolution of 1000 meters doesn't cut it.
AT&T also informed me that I can't have a smart phone without a data contract. Really? I've had one for 6 years like that but it wasn't WIFI capabale and too small to bother with web access.
Thanks for any light you shed on the subject.
One thing I have subsequently found out is that if data connection is off and WIFI is off then when I go into IE and start surfing it does bring up pages. Then when I go back to the Comm Manager the Data Connection to check the status of my connections it is still off for an instant and then it automatically turns itself on as though it had been turned on by use of IE and the status was just being updated.
Last night I installed a newer version of Google maps and was only able to install it via the web browser as opposed to via the Activesynch application on my PC. I was concerned that this might trigger turning on the 3G connection. So I had it set up for a WIFI connection ONLY and installed the app. Afterwards I went into the connection manager and once again the data conn. was turned back on so it's possible that it utilized AT&T's 3G network instead.
Is there any way to control or stop this?
GPS data doesn't have anything to do with 3G/Wifi data......
I know it's supposed to be positioning via the satellites through the GPS antenna but the the description data is coming over the network right? So it appears that even though I'm setup for WIFI access and it's showing as connected with an IP address etc. when I try the Googlemaps GPS app it turns the data conn. for 3G back on.
Thanks for chiming in ...
I have been copying over and installing some new apps to try out this morning via usb. WIFI is on and I'm loged in. None are datacomm oriented that I know of (unless they'r trying to make an internet access to notify about being installed) none the less I just checked again and my data conn. is once again turned back on. Is this typical behavior for a windows mobile phone (6.1) or is this just an AT&T "feature".
Sorry, I don't have a WM6 phone!
