(Q) Freeware SMS+MMS Export Tool for WM5? - General Questions and Answers

Hi all!
I know this issue has been discussed more often than necessary, for sure. Unfortunately the only messages in this forum that i have found are too old, to help me right. :-(
I am looking for a freeware tool to export my sms and mms from the Pocket Outlook into a textfile.
I don't want to sync it, only export it.
The software should run under WM5!
Does anyone know any suitable tool?

Freeware nada, but Kai has a tool to export SMS into spreadsheet. No restore however. Dopod has a free tool to export AND restore SMS under WM5 (see attached).

Dopod SMS Backup (translated from Chinese, rename .zip to .cab, install from machine only)
PS: Willkommen im Forum!

Hey thanks a lot. That seems to be ok. Now I only need to build an import script for my database.
Danke auch für's "Willkommen"

You can use Jeyo software, they have 2 applications available:
- a standalone version
- an outlook plug-in
I tried to the outlook plug-in, but don't like it so much because the sms that I get can't be stored on a IMAP folder after it.
I should have a look at the standalone version when I have some free time.
For information, I have WM5 it works fine with it.

SMSbackup by Dopod
SMSbackup is a great tool. Only problem is that it looks like sms in folders created under root "text messages" (example : archive/perso, archive/admin, ...)
Apparently, only inbox and sent items are saved.
Anyone got a solution to backup all the folders?

I dont have that problem, i have Inbox and then under that i Have another sub folder but it backs up the sub-folder too!
Ya just did a test and went 4 deep before i gave up as a good job, backed up and restored back to
normal!!!
Check to make sure that in the option that you have all folders selected!

does anyone know how to get this to work with WM6??? it says it is not made for this.

hi all,
Am new to this and apologise for this silly question.
I just did a backup and the file is something like this 2007-1-24-22-21-9-0.sms.
So does it mean I will have to do a full restore to see all these backup sms on my dopod ?
Not sure how this works. Appreciate any advice
TIA!

Where exactly is this option to select sub folders???
When I opn the program, there is only a MENU option associated with the LEFT softkey.
When I click on that... all I can see is
1) ABOUT
2) ACTION --- Backup, Restore and Delete
3) EXIT
When I click on Backup under the Actions menu, there are only 2 check boxes
1) STORAGE CARD
2) STORAGE (Not selectable for the Wizard)
That's... there are no other options. The soft keys at this point have OK and CANCEL respectively. Where do you see the option to backup sub-folders??

M question also!

I have the same question!
I've used once... and I think it didn't got the sub-folder... and I didn't saw any option to select or to ask for the backup of the sub-folders.

BUMP... How do you backup Sub Folders with this?

I found it works well, I dont have sub folders. But it dosent do the MMS. Is there a product that will back up all of the messaging?

Just having problems with my MDA Vario and wondered about backing up my text messages however the .zip file which is avail to download appears to be corrupt! Anyone have another version of the file they could post?
Cheers

Why don't you lot try PIM Backup v1.5
It backs up sms, mms & more (contacts ect), the output files are xml
Heres a link to the thread (the download is on this page)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=299705&highlight=pim+backup
If anyone tries it post your opinion on how well it backed up texts/mms with attachments/in sub folders. Thanks.

I tried it, SMS backup/restore was perfect... however my MMS seemed to lose their attachments (yes, I did tick the save attachments checkbox!)

Stop wasting time to discuss further, the best is already mentioned by "MISTER B" above.

Hey folksthnx for attaching the Dopod SMS Backup.
Could someone check it out though. Think the zip might be damaged.
Take cäre - Holla

Hey Lucas,
Thanks for sharing the great software.
really appreciate if someone could guide me through.
Here are the steps i took to install the SMSBackupEN101.zip but it was unsuccessful.
1) Download and convert SMSBackupEN101.zip to SMSBackupEN101.cab on my PC.
2) Connect Phone to PC through active sync 4.5.
3) Move SMSBackupEN101.cab to Storage card by the following path:
My Computer >> Mobile Device >> My Windows Mobile based Device >> Storage Card
4) Use FILE MANAGER in my phone to open SMSBackupEN101.cab
I got this error message>> "Installation of SMSBackupEN101.cab was Unsuccessful The installation is not intended for this device"
I'm using Dopod Smartphone 577w. Running on Window Mobiles 5.0. does anyone know what went wrong?
=)

Please someone help...I've backed up my contacts using my windows 2003 second edition pocket pc in a STG file format...I lost my device and bought a new one with a windows mobile 6 edition..I used "mobile vault" to read the STG file , but I can't find the "Contacts" file database...could any one help please find my contacts & extract them from that STG file...Thanks for reading
possibe alternative solution
Activesync restore was telling me that the database files were in use. The running programs application in my 02 xda doesn't really show all running programs. I installed magic button and when the active sync tells restore tells me to check the running programs, I just ran magic button and killed everything except for activesync. Click on retry and the databases where restored successfully.

Restoring SMS from backup

Hi there
I was having some problems with my Tytn (MDA Vario 2) so did a full backup, hard reset, and reinstalled my software/contacts. I don't want to duplicate the problems I was having before so didn't want to restore from the backup.
However, the thing I would really like to replace from my back-up is my SMS history. I am using the Palm Messenger app, and I am sure that I just need to restore a specific file, but can't work out which one.
Can anyone help?

How to get SMS from SIM?

My 8525 came in yesterday and I've been playing with it. It's a neat phone, and there's still alot to be discovered.
I was wondering how you can transfer or read SMS that are stored on the sim card? Is there a way?
I'm 100% sure that there are SMS on the SIM.
If you have WM5 AKU3.0 or above you should be able to read sms stored on SIM directly from the sms inbox (a long overdue feature)
If you don't have AKU3.0 or above install "SIM Messaging"
This will read all the messages on your SIM
If you want to copy them to your device install "Dopod smsBackup"
Dopod smsBackup is recognized by SIM Messaging as an export option
"SIM Messaging" & "Dopod smsBackup" can be found on here by using search
or you can find both programs (bottom of page)on the link below
http://www.pdamagician.com/wm2003sewm5software.html
Thanks Mister B.
How do I go about executing these files? They don't seem to be supported.

Did you download them from the link above !
If so the simMessaging is a cab file (looks like a zip file) so copy it straight to your device (storage card is a good place to put it) via active sync. Use the inbuilt file explorer on your PPC to find the cab file & then run it & it will self install.
The Dopod smsBackup is in a zip file, you will need to unzip this first on your desktop then transfer the Dopod smsBackup.cab file (choice of 2, chinese or English translation) to you PPC as you did for sim Messaging.
If your device states they are unsigned you could try installing "certification off" this allows you to install unsigned apps, can be found on the site above under WM5 Specific software I think !!
I have used these on WM5 myself, let me know how you get on.
That worked! Thanks!

Sorry, i have a QTEK-8310
Hi
But flashing the ROM loose all personnal data.
How can we do to dump all the phone, ROM + data (SMS, contact, file, etc....) ?
Thx
I found this on the forum:
This is the way i backup my phone
Your phone should be Registry and App unlocked..
Sync your phone, copy folders /Application Data - /Program Files - /Windows/Start Menu - /Windows/Start Up - to your Desktop (PC)
Install Registry Explorer with Resco Registry
Export HKCR,HKCU, HKLM then copy the .reg files on PC
Backup Contact, SMS, Call History with Jeyo Mobile Companion
--NOW DO YOUR HARD RESET OR REFLASHING THE SAME ROM--
Now, restoration...
App Unlock your device
Copy folders /Application Data - /Program Files - /Windows/Start Menu - /Windows/Start Up - to your Phone thru Active Sync. (Overwrite all)
Copy the .reg files from your PC to phone..
Install Resco Explorer with Resco Registry and Import the .reg files
Restore your Contacts thru Jeyo Mobile Companion
Restart device
there you go, you got now a clean setup of your device with all your apps and customizations. One thing, some apps wont work/launch with this procedure, you may need to reinstall them and if you try to, it will prompt that it couldn't be removed and if you wanna still continue installing, just hit Yes and install it on the same directory where it was on your previous setup.

download the latest qtek rom from xda:[email protected] and keep copy wid ya if ya need.
I believe that is enough simpler to make a backup with Sprite Backup before flash the ROM. If one becomes to the previous ROM (with which backup was made) it recovers the ready backup.
Although I have not proven it, I believe that also it would serve a copy done with ActiveSync.
Greetings
Sprite backup is the right choice! Just make a backup from your file system to the storage card, and if you want to downgrade your OS, just do that, and then run the backup file (it's an executable file). That's all!

there is only the ROM for Qtek-8300 available, Exist another way to find the original ROM??
THX.
maybe this is good for you:
http://www.smartmobil.no/index.php?name=UpDownload&req=getit&lid=84
thx for your support, but I think this is the version for QTEK-8300
Or you can use XDA-Tools
Sprite backup shouldnt be used when going from WM5 to WM6, it will corrupt your PIM and mail databases...
As for the original ROM for the Qtek 8310:

Third post has all the tornado ROM links

Save Text Messages Before Hard Reset?

I am going to do a hard reset and want to know if there is any way to save certain things to restore them later. I want to save the following:
1. Test Messages
2: Call History
Is there any way to do this and what do I have to do to restore them back after the hard reset? Thanks.
A little bump for this.

I dont't think pim backup can store the msg of your treo..
but you can backup the file PalmmsgV001 (into windows folder) on your sd (or pc)
then you can restore it after hard reset

Thanks! Is there a similar file for the call log history so I wouldn't even have to install or use the PIM backup program? The text and call log is all I care about...
yes palmVol.vol (recent calls list) and pim.vol (Contacts, calendar and call history )
-into main directory-

Thank you for posting the PIMbackup utility!! It seems to have worked great! Is there a way to look at that information on your PC vs restoring it to your phone?
Thanks again!
