ringtone default folder - General Topics

how do i change the ringtone folder to somewhere else like \Storage Card\Ringtones?
i followed the wiki to change the ringtone folder to my SD card, but it just doesnt work at all. wat i meant "not work at all" is, when i go into the Setting > Sounds & Notifications > Notifications, go to the Events drop down and select Phone: Incoming call etc, I just get an empty list in the second drop down menu (Play Sound). It doesn't list the ringtone files in \Storage Card\Ringtones. any help on this?
btw, here is the copy-paste registry fr wiki, seems to hv a typo in wiki, where i found SoundCategories in my device not Sound\Categories.
HKCU\ControlPanel\Sound\Categories\Ring\Directory = "\Storage Card\" (REG_SZ string, no quotes)

Think it should be
HKCU\ControlPanel\Soundcategories\Ring\Directory = "\Storage Card\"
But do not bother, I have tried it and it does not work too!
But you can try this,
1. Copy the ringtones files to \Storage Card\ or
2. Copy the ringtones files to \Storage Card\My Documents\
You should be able to see under "Incoming Call" notification setting the ringtones you copied into any of the above directories.
For other notifications like SMS, MMS, Email, I guess you still have to get stuck with \Windows\ & *.wav files! This is M$ WM5. Or maybe someone have some tricks to overcome this!

ok thanks, will try it out. seems like M$ nvr do a good job to incorporate typical phone feature i.e. ringtone, profile etc into their pda "phone". right now i use a software called Address Book to help me overcome this.

This one worked for me! Just saved me the trouble of cutting the mp3 up and wasting storage space.

Text Message Alerts

I added some ringtones to my phone and I can't assign them to text messages. The songs only appear under incoming calls. How do I get them to show up under text messages and e-mail alerts and stuff like that?

Start>Settings>Sounds & Notifications>Notifications>Event>Messaging: New text message - then pick your sound (any ringtone that is in \Windows should show up)
Edit: Also any ringtone in \Storage Card\My Documents shows up for me also.
It doesn't show up under there...they only show up under incoming calls.
You need to store the ring tone in the \windows directory on your phone.
what format are the tones you put on?
The ringtones are in .mp3 format. I put them under /windows in the rings folder and they still do not show up.

Try putting them in \APPLICATION DATA\SOUNDS
This is where I have mine, and they always show up in the default lists that WM5 reads from.
I'm running WM6 and I have an AppData folder (no Application Data Folder) but there isn't a sounds folder in there. I tried making one but that didn't work either.
Anyone have an answer for this? It's bugging me pretty bad that I can't have my own text message alerts.
I just copied a SMALL mp3 file into the Windows directory in my Hermes, it WORKS, it allows me to choose the file for a text message alert. I just did it with a bigger file and it worked also (3 MB mp3 file).
What phone are you using? wm6 from who? Which rom?

Put it in your windows folder (on your phone)
does it have to be wav?
actually, i think it can be anywhere on the phone..i have mines on my Storage Card. and i see it in the drop down menu when i try and edit the ringtones.
2 place you can put the file: windows or root of memory card.
need not be in wav, mp3 also can
do not put it on your phone. put it in the root of your storage card. you'll be good to go.
or i think in a my documents folder on storage card. just so the root of storage card doesnt get all cluttery
but thats only for ringtones. for like text notifications it has to go into \windows
In the past, I've been putting them in \Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones
I have a Fuze, I've tried putting the MP3 into the \Windows, \Windows\Rings, \Application Data, the root of the storage card to no avail. I still can not make the MP3 that I want as the tone for when I receive a new text message. Now, from what I've read on here I should be able to put it in any one of those spots and then go to start>settings>sounds & notifications and choose "Event" as "Messaging: New Text message" and the MP3 should then appear in the drop down box right? Wrong. I can however choose it as a ring tone for incoming calls, which I do not want.
Can anyone show me how to do this correctly or point me in the right direction? I've searched and read, but I still can't get it to work correctly.
It's only been 12hrs, but thought I'd bump this. For the morning guys.
I did this by converting the .mp3 files to .wma and placing them in the Windows folder. After a phone reset, I selected the new tones for Incoming Call and New Text Message alert.
I usually convert them to .wav files then load it to the storage card, shows up in the list with no problem.
The reason I put my tone/ring files directly into the Windows folder is that I read somewhere in the forums that placing the ringtone file on the storage card may contribute a delayed ring (for incoming calls) as the dialer accesses the ringtone from storage - which is what I had been experiencing.
After following that advice (and other tips supplied in the forum), I have notice a reduced delay between the first evidences of an incoming call and the start of ringing.
try putting them here:
application data\sounds
no need for a reset.
I do mines in this folder.
My Device > My Documents > My Ringtones
So I guess the problem is that for some reason my phone didn't recognize the 2 Mp3 files that I was trying to use and I couldn't convert them to WMA on my laptop. I found them as WMA (thank you google), put them in \Application Data\Sounds and it works flawlessly now. Thanks for the help.

Ringtones and registry questions

Hey all,
1. Just got a Fuze a few days ago. I was able to get it to recognize my own ringtones, but I don't see them when I look at the menu for notifications such as text messages, emails, etc. Does anyone happen to know how I get my ringtones to come up on that drop down menu? I'm sure it's just a question of putting things in the right folder.
2. Is there a registry editor that works well on a Fuze? On my Q I used to use RegEditSTG. Will that still work?
Thanks guys!
for the msgs and stuff they get the rings from the windows folder.
Rings folder
It happened to be that ALL ringtones, alarms & alert tones are duplicated under the "Rings" folder which of course eats up some space out of your memory and I do not understand why have they done this if the default is "Windows" folder?!

I don't know about getting your old ringtones to work, but if you ever you need new ones, I suggest MP3 trimmer. You can drag and drop whatever songs you would like to change to a ringtone onto your fuze, open the song with MP3 trimmer, and choose the start/stop times. It will then save that file as a proper ringtone, in the proper file.

Try dropping it into your /windows folder and then set it in sounds and notifications
