grrr pda - General Topics

Just lately little things are really bugging me being a PDA WM5 user,
like the fact when i recive a text i have to go thru the whole inbox,it dont default to the unread
or trying to back up contacts.little things that a 19.99 nokia can do no probs
my funky pda with all its great functions struggles to do simple phone tasks.
i may have to get a normal phone to use along side but then what the point.
:x

It is actually a PDA with phone functionality, not a phone with PDA functionality.

yes mate im aware of that but it strggule on such basic things seems silly when so much work has gone into the rest of the device and software

For the messaging problem, you may want to have a look at SPB Diary. Whenever you get a message (txt, mail, whatever) itll show on todayscreen (as usual ) but when you tap it, it wil show a box with the message instead of the entire inbox (and the benefits of having calendar, contacts, tasks and such all on your todayscreen in tabs).
SPB Diary: http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/diary/?en
For backup solutions i suggest a search on the forum (or google ). There are plenty out there and i'm sure you can find one to suite your needs

thanks mate ,i have spb back up but was just trying to copy and paste my contacts to sd card
ill look into your other suggestion
thank you 8)

Copy and past contacts to SD couldn't be easier:
In the root of your device there is a file called pim.vol, just copy and paste it.

Best free PIM back up for contacts!!!!!!

This is a great little app for all winmo devices, its called XML Backup, best of all, its free. If you, like a lot of other people here at XDA, like trying new ROMs and apps that cause you to hard reset, then this app is for you!
Install the cab. find it in your programs list, start the app and then it will ask you if you want to back up or restore. For first time users, back-up your contacts list to your memory card (as so it won't get erased), you must press destination folder! Create a folder called "Phone Back-up" or what ever you want to call it, go back to your XML Back-up app, back-up your contacts to the newly created folder, press select all, then start! You're done! Now you can re-flash to your hearts content and never have to worry about losing all contacts again!
Even better PPC PIM Backup, this does all your messages as well as contacts.
Personally, I don't see a need for saving messages. If anything, being able to save 300+ contacts is enough for me! But, PPC Back-up PIM is a really good app aswell, my preference lies in XML Contacts
For me its the ability to retain SMS conversations over a ROM flash that means i have gone the way i have. My contacts are saved on-line anyway as I have a mail2web acount that does OTA sync of all the PIM data.
Just remembered PIM Backup also does your calendar, which again i don't need, see above, but others might.
I'm not going to dispute the fact that there are but apps for PIM back-up! I have tried some of them, but, XML is simple and easy! 'm sure as you know, the more stuff you keep on your phone, the more memory it uses and seeing as how I enjoy having as much free memory as possible, just keeping my contacts backed-up is fine!
For the newb's and the faint of heart, XML is a lot easier to work with and my personal choice for PIM back-up!

try vufone.com - syncs contacts, calendar, messages, pictures, videos and music to the web.
Rafi
Dashwire does the same thing, but, it can also send text msgs from your pc/laptop for free! I tried it out for a bit, decent app, but, stays active in the backround, therefore, killing your battery!

Contacts - "File as"

Ive just had to hard reset my Elfin, but I had all my contacts backed up using "Microsoft MyPhone" (which is awesome)
When it downloaded all my contacts back to my phone, its saved them all with their last names shown first.
What I want to know is if there is a way to change them all to show with the "First" name first in the contacts list, without having to go through and change them all manually?
come on, surely someone must know some sort of registry hack or a stupidly hidden setting?
plz :'(
....in my opinion you have to go through your contacts one by one, but if you really like to, there's Resco Contact Manager that can customize your contacts in the manner you want...cheers!
when i got bored today, i went through and changed them all ¬_¬
lol Cris, there is no reg hack to change it.... make sure you do a PIM backup next time!!! (is ok, before i learnt about PIM, i had to do the same with 500 duplicate contacts lol... bummer!!)
yeh, I always used to use PIMbackup, but then when I tried out "MyPhone" which is actually pretty cool, I thought I would use it from now on.
but yeh, i think im gonna go back to pimbackup ^_^
(but I will also still use myphone, because it means i can edit my contacts on the net etc, which is easier than on a tiny virtual keyboard
Bit late but here's what i use
Shubaroo Contact changer
:O
i havent tried it, but this is EXACTLY what ive been trying to find.
:3
well, at least I have it for next time
I have the same frustration and created my own program to fix the contacts, even allowing for your own custom formats and using the Company Name field. I hope you find it helpful!

[Q] My Queries

Guys,
Got my phone a couple of days before ... no case yet ... hopefully the S case will be here tomorrow.
Have been playing with it most of the time since I got it and now have compiled a list of queries. Am sure the geeks out here will be able to help
a) Setup the VOIP ,,, no probs, works great. The problem is that well, every time I press call, I've got to choose between cell phone call and internet call. I live in Kuwait where all local calls are basically free or really cheap. I would like the popup to appear when it is an international call only. If that's not possible is there a way to switch it off (as I normally make local calls) and then have an easy way to switch the voip on?
b) I downloaded skype from one of these forums ... could not get it in the market. The problem I have with skype and one other program is that it has no "exit" option. Its on and running all the time even when I am done using it. Any way to have an option to exit? Is it only possible to use something like a tasker or something and force it to close/ end service?
c) I have my bookmarks at home/office in Google Chrome. I seriously thought since both Android and Chrome are Google products (just as Gmail) the bookmarks in my Google Chrome would have synced with my android browser just as Gmail dumped my contacts on to the phone (which by the way I did not want to happen). Is there some way I can get my chrome bookmarks show up in my browser?
More queries will follow once I play a lil more. Thanks for help received from various nice guys here while I was in the process of getting the NS and then splitting my head on which case to get.
Cheers
Can someone please help me??
I have managed to find out that we can exit Skype. I however use a program called "Stock India" and can find no way out.
Would appreciate help with the rest of those queries too.
Thanks
bump ... sorry
I'd help you if I could.
Normally I try to avoid non-answers like this, but I was starting to feel bad for you getting no replies. >.>
Alright, I just downloaded skype to see if I can answer your questions.
1. No clue. I don't use the voip feature. I looked under call settings and it has the options for when to use internet calling. Maybe that's it?
2. You can sign out when you're in the "My Info" tab. If you want to end the app then you got to do that manually or with tasker.
3. I'm asking myself the same question. There aren't any apps that make it easier either. I think there are apps that sync with google bookmarks, but that's totally different from chrome bookmarks.
Hope I helped you somewhat.
Not sure if these'll help you any but....
a. I've only messed around with the VOIP stuff for a couple of days, but there is an option in Settings->Call Settings->Internet Call Settings to let the phone know when you want to use it. Sounds like yours is set to ask for each call. Mine is set to 'For Internet Calls Only'. Try that.
b. Android - and Gingerbread in particular - is very good about managing memory and running apps. That said, if you really want to kill the skype process, look into downloading one of the many available task managers on the market. I can't suggest a good one for you, as I don't use one. Many people actually recommend against using one.
c. I wish. ;-) What I have found, though, and it's not a very good solution, is to use a different browser. I've been looking at Firefox for Android and it's actually pretty good. It also includes the ability to sync your desktop bookmarks to your mobile, which might make it worth the change for you.
Hey Zorak, not to worry ... guess I've got used to no replies Maybe the question was dumb and should have been found with a search (I normally search first) or maybe the guys genuinely don't know (in which case there is no point in blaming anyone).
Regards setting voip to "internet calls only", I did try that option. The result is that no calls are recognized as internet calls unless you copy and paste the number into a new field called "Internet Call" by editing the contact. Here, I've got a problem ... I use exchange for my contacts and if you use exchange, there is no option to add "Internet Call".
To test, I enabled my Gmail contacts and was able to enter the "Internet Call" and noticed that in gmail, the contact gets modified, the category being "Other:" followed by "sip:+9659935xxx". I copied pasted "sip:+9659935xxx" into one of the regular fields in exchange, but it does not work. The only option therefore seems to edit my entire Gmail contacts.
@DKYang & knytphal Yes, the now know that we can logout of skype ... thanks
Regarding android bookmarks, I found this solution ... guess there is nothing to worry about security. From whichever browser you use, 1) export the bookmarks to a html file.
2) Upload the html file to Rerware.
3) Install MyBookmarks from Appbrain
4) This software lets you overwrite your Android bookmarks with the one uploaded to the Rerware site.
This should help ... just not sure if after this is done if these new bookmarks would get saved on to our gmail or wherever in case we factory reset or change mobiles.

Synchronize call log with Outlook Journal

Hi all,
I have searched for this application for a long time and tried whole bunch of them, but I am still looking for SOLID, SIMPLE, and STRAIGHTFORWARD application to save Call log entries into Outlook Journal.
My setup:
Windows 7 32-bit
Outlook 2007 SP2
HD2 with latest T-Mo ROM and Cookie Home Tab installed.
Applications I tried:
Maniac's SmartJournal - so far the best solution and worked flawlessly on the XP. Since I switched to Windows 7 it shows that the SmartJournal reads from the device, the notification disappears and nothing happens. Maniac's website is down, so I cannot find out what is going on.
Pocket Informant Outlook Extension - since it is now free as Informant stopped supporting Windows Mobile, I tried it, it seems that it works and does some synchronizing according to the log, but no entry shows up the Journal.
Jeyo Outlook Extension - they used to support Outlook Journal in their version for Symbian, but in their Windows Mobile they only synchronize SMS.
MobiTNT - I tried that software as well, but I am not able to enable the software on the computer.
I know that there is also some app for syncing call log into calendar but it seems way too akward.
I know that there are many threads about this all over the Xda, but they seem to be old for one and do not end up with comprehensive solution afterall.
I would like to this post to become comprehensive and one stop solution for somebody who is looking for the solution like me.
Any ideas are welcome.
Nobody? Really? Really?
I Feel your pain
I used to use Calls to Journal from Chapura with my windows handheld. Strangely it is now discontinued.
It was slick, and perfect. Dumped all calls to Outlook journal and tagged the outlook contacts (so that they showed up in activites). Was perfect in my business when someone denied that you called them.
I can't find anything that compares. Not even close. The other ones like "missing sync" try to do too much and do not include this very simple functionality.
Have you had any luck?
Well, I finally managed to make the Maniac's Smartjournal work and it works great. It transfers the calls into Journal and tags for the known Contacts so it shows in Activities.
If you would like to try it, I have the .exe files since the website is no longer active. The files are really small and the program is no memory hog by any means. I tried Jeyo and it just crashes Outlook.
Let me know.
Another one
I wish i could be more helpful but there is one applicatoin which i have used in the past but have since forgotten the name whichvery simply adds an appointment into outlook which lasts for the duration of the call, with the title of whoever the conversation was with.
this might be the one i was thinking of. I'm gonna check it now.

post the files please & details you have on them & any special instructions on getting it working.
One of the biggest mistakes MS made was not having WM & its PC software linking together with complete harmony & user control.
Really are a clueless bunch at redmond HQ ...
I am attaching the rar file. There are two files. One is SmartJournal.exe and the other is SmartJournal Beta.exe Try first the SmartJournal.exe run as admin and compatibility with XP SP2. Sometimes it shows the error that the CallLog.csv cannot be dumped. If that is the case, uninstall the SmartJournal and install the Beta (again as administrator and compatibility mode XP SP2). Maniac had a great forum unfortunatelly that website is no longer active.
Let me know if you have any trouble.
Take 2
I just realised my previous post was totally useless since I never included the link. I've been using Call Calendar for the past few days which works really well, recording the time, duration, who the call was with and who called who silently into outlook, which will then obviously sync over activesync or exchange. you can get it here:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-call-calendar.html
then again while searching for that link i found this program, Phonelog- it's newer and seems to have additional features like recording incoming SMS. I think you can customise what is recorded too, it might be worth a shot:
http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-phonelog.html
I've never used Outlook journal, so I don't know how much functionality you lose as a result of these being purely appointments. Hope it oculd be useful though.
Thanks for the post and link. I prefere not to use the calendar for syncing, because than the entries eat up the screen when I view my calendar appointments. Also, I always felt siunce the Journal has a Phone log category it is more obvious to use it rather than calendar. Also, I make LOT of calls on given days and then my calendar looks like mess between the actual appointments and the phone call. Also, I checked the review section on freeware.com and lot of people complain about the SMS not working (which would be the only feature why I would consider this software). But great addition to the post and thanks for the links.
Karel
You can try MobileArchiver (mobilearchiving.com) - for me works perfectly and puts all call history in journal every sync.

If the call history is full, I mean 300 items, there is a great chance that the PC app tries to read the calllogdump.csv on the pda while it is already accessed by the pda (it is written) and therefore paralell reading fails.
Solution: backup call log, and after that, delete some 50-100 entries manually. Sync works then nicely...
Regards, G.

Another possible solution is to run Smartjournal.exe on pc, it copies the dump exe to Device\Temp, and runs, and this creates the csv. Navigate to this folder (My Device\Temp) and make the csv read only.
Running the pc side returns an error on the PDA, but the log will be read and data transferred.
Now remove read only from csv, move to pc, leave only the last entry, delete all the rest, save, move back to PDA.
Run pc side, all should be good now. You will have a lastsync.txt created in the PC folder of Smartsync. Sync finished.
Update:

Mobitnt PocketExport does the job for some days, no errors, I think I keep using this app

[Q] Attaching file to emails

Long time WM user, fairly new WP7.5 user.
Love the platform and for the most part, don't miss WM at all.
Except, I used to be able to attach files to my emails like MP3 and Wav files but I have yet to see a way to do that under WP7.5.
I have searched and scrolled through this section to see if I could find something however nothing really addressed the question. Based on some of the threads I read, it looks like this cannot be done.
Can it? Does anyone know if it is coming out in a relase fix?
Thanks,
Rick
The EmailComposeTask class does not support attachments which is ridiculous and it's been a long time complaint. Microsoft doesn't seem to bothered by it and I haven't heard anything about them supporting it. I think it's part of their strategy to get devs to start using the cloud more.
Just noticed this wasn't the developer forum. My post is development related and doesn't really apply to question.
I agree about the cloud but you still need to be able to send a link in an expeditious way. Openning windowslive and finding the folder/file and then specifying share and sending an email is a PIA.
I do like the cloud for my contacts and other stuff since it is not taking space on my phone. I like it until I travel into the boonies of Texas and want to make a call but the contact list is not there cause there is not connection to 4G, 3G but to whatever was there before God created cell phones. Not looking forward to that day.
For most things it is done under the application. For example, in office word, you can hit share and choose the email account. Same within most apps. Zune though does not have this option. probably because your not supposed to pirate them to your friends.
Yet more prof that Windows Phone sucks and Windows Mobile still rules. What a damn shame. I tried to email someone and attach my resume but couldn't I had to go through the stupid office hub to do it, what a bunch of B.S. And they wonder why their sales suck ass.

You're not trying to imply that I would send MP3's that are illegal are you?
Just kidding.
Actually they are my own files and sometimes ring tones that I created and want to share.
As for the resume email... kind of hard to attach a file to an email when it is not located on your phone. I am liking the fact that the cloud has the files and not the phone. There just needs to be a simple way to access and send it. Like Sinister1, I would prefer to have it attached to an email that I authored like we have been doing every since email allowed attachments rather than going to the file on the cloud and sharing it with an individual.
Is there any way to extract files from our phones and store them in Dropbox or Skydrive? for example pdf files or mp3.
Office files will sync on SkyDrive, or if opened on the phone (from email or web) can be saved to SkyDrive or to the phone itself. In either case, you can then send them as attachments (but only that one file at a time) in email.
Sadly, though, that's the only way I know of to send email attachments other than pictures. Microsoft really needs to either add the API for attachments, or they need to allow Outlook Mobile to open files from the public parts of your phone.
Irony-mode: Zune (the hardware, all the way fromt he HD to the original 30GB model) allowed sending files by WiFi - a feature MS has not bothered to add to WP7 even though I'm pretty sure it wouldn't be difficult (both run on some variant of CE, both have WiFi, the HD even used a touch interface similar to the phone...). Instead, forget sending music, forget sending video, and you can barely send a Word doc!

Is there another way to extract pdfs, zips or mp3s of our phones even through data cable?
My PDF files are adding up. Whenever I open up Adobe reader, the files are pilling up. I know I can press and hold on any one of them and delete the file but some I want on my PC and this just is too funky.
@Rickgig, what phone do you have? Some WP7 devices are able to use apps that will access the phone and move/copy/transfer files.
Alternatively, don't you have other copies of those PDFs? I mean, they got onto the phone from somewhere, so wouldn't it be easier to get them from there? Then you could safely delete the unneeded ones off the phone.

I have a Titan with AT&T.
You're right... I can get them from someplace else. They are mostly menu's from restaurants but then they are business documents too. I have since learned to upload them from my PC to Skydrive and access them there.
There's a work around for everything I just wanted some of the WM features to be here. Like the file that prompted me to start this thread in the first place. My son did some work on his car and took a short video of the results and MMS'd to me. I can forward it to others but that is about it. Can't save it, can't email it to myself... if I deleted the text thread, it's gone.
