TyTN (v1605) as bluetooth modem...? - General Topics

Hi all - help!
I am trying to set my TyTN to be a bluetooth modem. The instruction manual is useless.
If I try to connect to my device from my laptop (Dell D610) I get the only option of installing a modem device - I do this but it simply acts as a standard dial-up. I am prompted for a telephone number, username/password. Furthermore there is no generic bluetooth modem displayed in control panel as suggested by the manual.
What I am after is a way to connect my laptop to the TyTN over bluetooth and then use the 3G connectivity as internet access...
I can use the 3G from the phone no probs - so I know the phone is correctly configured in terms of access. It is just the bluetooth part I cannot get working.
It makes no difference if I have wireless modem started or not either...
Help???
Rich

OK - I figured this out...
To install Bluetooth modem do this:
1 - activate bluetooth and set TyTN to be discoverable
2 - on laptop search for new device and connect
3 - select dial-up networking service and connect
4 - set up passwords if necessary
5 - when presented with dial-up info, give the connection a name and simpy add *99# as the phone number.
6 - ok this and the connection is set up and a new dial-up conection (mine is COM40) appears in control panel modems.
In order to connect:
1 - turn on bluetooth on TyTN
2 - activate wireless-modem, select bluetooth and hit start
3 - double-click the new connection on the laptop
It should open the BT port, connect and you should be off...
I got 115k/sec using this over 3G
Rich
PS - you can also do this using the built in USB modem. Basically, start the wireless-modem app, select USB and hit start. Now plug your USB cable in and when prompted install the driver off the vodafone CD (I used the one is OEM/Apps/Drivers/USBModem). Once installed again put *99# as the phone number of the connection. To use simply start wireless modem as usb, connect the device and dial the new connection name. I got 215k/sec indicated!!!!

The 115K and 215K are default port speeds when you setup the connection. If you select the properties of the Bluetooth and USB Modems you can raise it up to 921K

Thanks for the help, here, rakr1 - I've also been pulling my hair out over this. I got the BT modem recognised (also as COM40) and tried using the Vodafone ConnectMe app but it attempts an unsupported AT command and bombs out. So, using your instructions I've now got my TyTN connected.
However, it's still constrained to 115200bps. The modem properties dialog doesn't let me set it any higher. Ideas? How did you change this, rkorzuch?
Thanks.

Mine only allows up to 230K .... is there a newer driver or something ? i used the link from the wiki.
Thanks!
Oh, as a side note, when I tried to install this -- it said something in computer management that made it sound like it was in beta -- something like Preproduction version, [REMEMBER TO CHANGE SYSID] something along those lines .. is that bad?

Don't pay attention to it - in reality, your TyTN communicates far faster with the desktop. the port speed only hs meaning over serial connections, not over IrDA / BT / USB ones.
(At least, this has always been the case in all my tests.)

sorry to sound stupid an' all, but I'm on t-mobile (UK) and I'd like to know what bearing this has on their "Web 'n' Walk" plans, I'm only on the normal version, rather than the plus or max, so would the methods on this site avoid their notice?
thanks, Forlornity
(oh, and First post! I've been lurking for a while now but decided to register today)

I am not sure if you can connect through the wireless modem, I would expect that your dial up wouldn't work. You can give it a try. Even if they would notice, what can they do? You can always tell them that you did it by accident.
I am pretty sure I've read a post somewhere that someone was doing this for quite a while.
As far as I know the difference comes in the traffic limit, where web and walk should be 1 GB and plus is 3GB.

What's a bluetooth modem?

I followed the steps above and managed to get connected (which is great. thanks Rich!)
However, everytime I try to do this again it gets to the registering on the network phase, I can see the connection, send and receive lights blinking and then it suddenly stops and I get a "error 31 : a device attached to the system is not functioning" error.
Any ideas?
Cheers,
Dan

ActiveSync over BT, WM6, MS BT stack, XP and VISTA

Hello everibody! Since ~ 1 year i’m a heavy reader, but i’ve never posted before, since i could find all my answers just reading… 
But recently i bought a Universal wich i have unlocked and upgraded to WM6 – (Thanks thingonaspring, great ROM! ), and lost my AS connectivity (over BT). Kept on reading, but none of the provided solutions worked.
So, here is my 2 cents, hope, it will help for others too:
XP (from SP2!)
Basically, my problem was, that my Uni allowed as outgoing ports only COM0, 4 and 5. I use a really chep BT dongle from eBay wich came with Blue Soleil 1.x as driver and software, wich allows as incoming ports only COM11, 12. I’ve tried all of the Blue Soleil drivers wich i could find ont he net, even the most recent 5.x versions. None of them provided these ports to be opened.
My solution was thet i deleted all the custom Blue Soleil drivers, and let Windows to install his – generic – BT drivers. From here my problem was solved, since it doesn’t install any predefined ports, i can install them manually, as needed, and, since i know wich ports can be opened on my PDA as outgoing ports…
So, here are the steps from scratch:
1. Delete all BT related drivers, and let Windows recognize the New Hardware and install his Generic drivers for it, reboot if necessary.
2. Open My Bluetooth Places - Bluetooth Devices select COM Ports tab. Button, and we add port(s) til we reach the number we want (my case was COM4, so i’ve added ports 3 and 4, windows adds ports one by one, starting from the hardware ports. COM3 can be deleted aftrwards), as an Incoming Port. Ont he Options tab w eset this port as discoverable, save. Ok, now we have the necessary port, but we need an incoming connection too, ont hat port, so:
3. Start - Settings - Network Connections - New Connection Wizard.
4. The wizard starts, Next - Set up an advanced connection - Next - Connect directly to another computer - Next - Host - Next – we choose our port and save our settings, be careful, the PC should remain as dicoverable!.
5. Still not enough, our PDA would make now a Serial Port profile connection, but, we need AS to work, so:
6. Fire up ActiveSync, File - Connection Settings - Allow connections to one of the following - we choose our port, everything else is allowed and on Automatic. Save.
7. Ok, our PC is prepared, let’s see the Uni, it’s far more simple: at BT settings we pair our uni with the PC, and, as expected, we have an ActiveSync profile from the PC, wich we select.
8. ComPorts tab, New Outgoing Connection – we choose our port number (if it’s not there already), Save.
9. Start – Programs - ActiveSync - Menu - Connect via Bluetooth, and success, we can synchronise and we have network too!
On WinVista (i have Vista Ultimate installed):
as described above, with a few modifications:
- VISTA doesn’t recognize the hardware (at least mine isn’t recognised) , so it installs it as Unknown device. So, we have to „refresh” it’s „drivers” manually – we won’t let Windows to search for drivers, we select manually: Microsoft - Generic Bluetooth Radio, OK, now it finds the Microsoft Bluetooth Enumerator too.
- we don’t have to follow points 3 and 4.
- now we already can establish an AS connection, but, without network support. To enable this, we must select on our PC int he Microsoft Mobile Center – Mobile setting – connection settings NOT the Automatic connection, but the same as we have on our PDA at the Network connections, where it states „Programs that automatically connect to the internet should use… Usually My Work Network. The effect is immediate, we don’t have to restart anything.
- If i used VISTA, i didn’t had to add ont he PDA a new outgoing port (i didn’t have the possibility), but, it works without it.
One more observation: our PDA can have an AS connection over BT with only one PC, so, if we pair it with another PC, we loose our first pairing. So, it is advisable to leave our PC in discoverable mode.
Hope, somebody will find this useful.

Does HTC Cruise work like a modem?

I've a software to control a locator GPS-GSM device and I need my HTC works like a modem. When I put my HTC into the USB must be recognized like a COM (start-control pannel- system-hardware-device administrator) to make a data call via this software. It musn't initiate the Active Sync software.
This software only works when a modem is connected. Before I connected my V3 Motorola Phone.
Any solutions?
Thanks
You can disable the ActiveSync on your PDA, just activate it, Menu -> connections, untick...
But for what reason would you wan't to use it as a modem? use it as a wired GPS device or connect to the Internet using it?
If the First, I'd recommend the Franson GPSGate, for the second use the ICS (internet sharing) App on your PDA...
I want my HTC Cruise was recognized like a modem when I connect it with the PC via USB.
Why?
Because I must download tracks from a GPS-GSM locator device installed into my car to recover my car if it were stolen, via software installed in the PC.
Before I connected my V3 Motorola Phone via USB to the PC, then it was recognized like a modem USB in COM4 for example. Then I set the communications setting from the software and I maked a data call from the software PC via V3 phone to the SIM installed into the car.
Now I need to connect my HTC instead of V3 and I expect it was recognized like a modem in certain COM.
Do you understand me?
Thanks
Yes this can be done.
1. Connect TC to PC like you would to sync. (you do need to make the active sync setting for allow wireless connection is checked)
2. go to progarms on the Pocket PC. There you find an app called Interent sharing.
3. Hit conect once you open the progarm.
4. Do what you need on the net.
I don't need sync the HTC with the PC and I don´t need to connect to the net.
Let's imagine that we want to use the hyperterminal program in the PC, you must select a modem that it's installed in a certain COM with a desired speed, protocol, etc
Do you understand now?
Thank you.
I guess I'm seeing where this is headed...
Basicly you wan't the PDA to show up as a Dial-Up modem... I've done a bit of searching and with WM6, the dial-up modem function has been effectively replaced by the ICS, the main reason is, it was a b*tch to configure for internet access, and that is use of it in 99% of cases...
Unless the program you're using needs to actually see the modem I'd try to configure the ICS (add an extra connection) to connect to it... if it needs to see it as a modem, (and you want to keep the PDA), get a cheap phone that you can occasionally use as a modem for this task
Using the ICS will disable the activesync for that connection, but if you wan't to disable the activesync just follow the steps mentioned before...
I reckon bluetooth is the only way to go for this, need to dig out my BT dongle to check but I think it should allow you to use the phones dial-up service.
Maybe this?
Maybe you need this?

Exactly how to use ICS (WM6.1) with a laptop?

So I thought this would be easy. I _finally_ got my XV6800 flashed and up and running with a DCD ROM.
My main reason was to use ICS with any laptop in an easy fashion the way it was intended to be used.
So I'm all excited, get my USB cable, plug it into the laptop and I'm not sure what is supposed to exactly happen.
On my phone I have:
PC Connection: USB
Network Connection: Data Connection (my only and active data network connection)
When I connect it and click on 'Connect' it says 'Check USB cable connection'. I should also mentioned though that before I do any of this, when I connect the phone to the laptop it doesn't quite recognize the device yet (this is an XP laptop) and launches the new hardware wizard for Generic RNDIS.
So do I first have to pair the two somehow? I read somewhere that essentially the laptop will use the phone as another network card of sorts. If that is the case, do I need to set all that up on the laptop first?
I tried Googling ICS how-to or ICS guide or ICS (insert-keyword-here) and amazingly, I can't find a simple guide on how this works.
Any help would be appreciated! (I searched threads here and can't find anything either)
Well, here is what I figured out so far. You HAVE to have MS Activesync on the target laptop it seems from all I could find, so the downside to this approach vs. some other methods is you can't connect it to any laptop at random unless they have AS installed.
The wierd part is it still doesn't fully work.
I noticed that when I connect now, it works and says 'Connected' and also observe the following:
1) Under my Network Apapters of device manager, my adapter changes from Windows Mobile-based Device to Windows Mobile-based Internet Sharing Device
2) I see the little PC traffic/connection icon in the system tray just like I would expect it
But when I refresh my browser, there is still no activity :/
The Status tab says:
Status: Acquiring network address...and then changed to...Connected
Speed: 10.0 Mbps
Packets sent goes up about 1 every 2-4 seconds but received only stays very low usually, about 5-9...
Note: I made sure a data connection was first established on my phone before I turned on ICS

Problems Connecting to External Bluetooth GPS

So I picked up an external GPS receiver off ebay. It's the Globalsat BT-359C (http://www.usglobalsat.com/p-214-bt-359c.aspx). Turned it on, everything went fine as far as my fuze finding it. I'd goto add new device, it'd pull up "BT-GPS371D88", i'd select it, put it the four "0" 's, and it'd give me the message "your pocketpc is now connected with BT-GPS371D88". It comes up in the list but under disconnected. So i'm like eh whatever, and setup the outgoing com port to COM0 as per the instructions, and make sure its unsecure.
I go back to devices, highlight BT-GPS371D88, click it. Check off "Serial Port" in select services to use, and save. Then heres where everything goes wrong, I hit connect, and it gives me the following message "Your device did not connect with BT-GPS371D88. The connection failed or the passcode is incorrect." I've been tinkering with it all day, searching various forums to no avail. Even downgraded my 6.5 rom to 6.1 thinking it was maybe incompatible with something so new.
Now i'm stuck, I really want to get it working so i can use it for a trip thats coming up in a few days. Has anyone else had such a problem? is there like a quick fix that i'm over looking, or is it simply not compatible with the fuze? I managed to get it paired up and connected fine to my blackberry curve just to see if the gps unit was defective (did buy it off ebay). Any Ideas guys? Not sure where else to turn now.
Oh yeah btw my current rom that i'm using is
At0mAng Fusion Power V 5.X ROM Series
Windows Mobile 6.1 (Build 21051 1.6.4)

have a BT GPS for my Dell axim x51v, got some trouble too getting it to connect, but eventually did
here are some pointers:
1) Delete all pairings and com port pairings on the device
2) Pair the device (make sure that you put 'request authorization' or something... this ensures that you need to put the 0000 code to connect)
3) you need to set up at outgoing port on your device, to the BT GPS... COM 8 is norm
4) External GPS setting in the Start>Settings tab
hardware port is where you put the outgoing port in (3)
software port is where you put for your GPS software... COM4 is norm
third column where WinMo will manage GPS, say yes
This worked for me:
I have a Hermes (WM6.5) with a holoux bluetooth GPS, but the GPS was not connecting for me properly either. It seems to be a problem with the way WM6.1 pairs with bluetooth devices.
I managed to get mine to work without reflashing by downloading this alternative bluetooth manager:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=353774
Hope this helps.
Not trying to bump up an old thread for no reason, but I figured this info would be helpful for people utilizing searches.
After lots of research and frustration the past week I have gotten my external GPS (USGlobalSat BT-368i) to work with my HTC Fuze! Below are the steps I followed that have worked for me. Note that I still have the phone configured to use the internal GPS if the program is set to "Let windows manage GPS settings".
1. Pair the device using Bluetooth.
2. Under the devices tab select your external gps device, and check the box to use "Serial Port". Then choose Save.
2. Under the Bluetooth settings choose "COM Ports" tab.
3. Choose "New Outgoing Port", and then select your device and click next. Choose your port and preferred "secure" option. Then click Finish. (I have configured mine to use COM0 & Secure Connection)
The device will still show as "Disconnected", and you will not be able to connect it under the Bluetooth manager. It will give you an error saying unable to connect.
To use the external GPS device you can simply select the outgoing port you configured above in your program, and most likely you will use a baud rate of 4800. Once you enable the GPS in the program it should connect itself via Bluetooth to your device and begin using it.
You should also be able to configure it to automatically use your external GPS instead of the internal one under the "External GPS" settings, but my current ROM has the hardware portion of External GPS manager broken @ the moment. Therefore I have not configured this, and cannot confirm it.
Hope this helps someone!

[Q] Kies via Wi-Fi (not Kies Air)

Sorry... maybe a stupid question... (I've searched the net and XDA before posting it, but didn't find any valid solution, just some trace of this same problem referred to other Samsung devices)
The question is:
How can I make the option "Kies via Wi-Fi - Connect to Kies via Wi-Fi" work?
I've downloaded the last version of Kies from Samsung support and installed it on my Win7 PC. I also followed the "Wi-Fi Connection Setup Guide".
I start Kies on the PC and press the "Kies via Wi-Fi button on the GNote but my PC doesn't recognize my Note 10.1 and the scanning on the GNote gives no result.
When, in the GNote, I go to Settings-More settings-Kies via Wi-Fi I just get an Attention message ("Please use caution when transmitting information on an unsecured Wi-Fi network...."). I click OK, then there's a second message window on the bottom of which for a couple of seconds there's a Scan button that, when pressed, quickly changes to a Cancel button. After a while the Scan button reappears and, when pressed, is again changed on the Cancel button.
I can't make any headway from this stupid loop
In the meantime the Kies window on the PC shows the message "Please connect a device".
I'm not interested on Kies Air (that I think is another thing).
I just would like to quickly access my GNote from the PC (and maybe transfer some small file) without having to connect it with the USB cable (no problem with the USB cable connection: the GNote is recognized and I can access it).
The Note is usually connected to a Wi-Fi router on my PC, that is connected to Internet (that's how I can access the Internet at home with the GNote).
Probably I'm missing some setting? Or is Kies not working with this option? Anyone has successfully used this kind of connection?
Any link, advice, possible solution?
Thanks
Could be a Win7 problem: maybe connection is simply rejected since You can´t register and assign an Android device to a "home-network-group" which would allow every connection.
On my laptop I have an Intel-App called "MyWiFi" thus creating a peer-to-peer connection with Android devices. With this I don´t have problems to connect, BUT: when connected via MyWiFi I have to switch off the WiFi of my router otherwise GNote does not connect to MyWiFi .............
Better use the cable .......
Samsung Kies and MyPhoneExplorer

Thanks troed.
I see that my problem (with win7) is one of those of difficult solution (I had nightmares in the past to configure my Wi-Fi network and make it work).
In the meantime (following the tip received in an italian forum) I've found an other app, called MyPhoneExplorer, that works exactly as I intended.
It's not just for Samsung devices but for any Android device.
It consists of a client app to be installed on the tablet (small size: 564 Kb)
and a program to be installed on the PC (installer is 6.45 Mb and the portable program folder is about 17 Mb).
With this app files can be easily exchanged between the PC and the GNote through Wi-Fi.
BTW Samsung Kies installer (90.5 Mb) is huge comparing to that and, at least for me and for many other Win7 users, doesn't work on Wi-Fi in spite of what is promised and advertised.
For the second time I can't understand why a big company like Samsung can't produce a simple good and working app whilst single developers can easily do that!
(the first case is with S Note that, IMHO, is lacking some essential feature that other apps have and that prevents me form using it as my primary note taking app)
Maybe Samsung's developers don't use their company's devices?
Or maybe they have no interest in producing good working apps and prefer to put out incomplete ones to better sell their next line of products?
Forgot in my post: You also might try "Shynx"
