Can anyone recommend a WM5 unit w/ GPRS, WiFi, CompactFlash? - General Topics

Hello Fellows,
I currently have an XDA II unit that has been faithful to me for years, and everytime i flash it, it's like getting a new phone
But now I have a new challenge. I need to put a magnetic card reader on a unit. The unit needs to support WiFi, GPRS and Compact Flash (unless of course someone knows of a Magnetic Card reader that plugs into the SD slot of my XDA II). Does anyone have any experience with such a unit. Or even know where I could find one?
Thanks a lot,
Morten

None of the current PPC phones have CF slots.
You can however get Bluetooth card readers. I know Symbol, Radix, and Itronix supply them, but all their stuff is ruggedised, and therefore very expensive.

Thanks, I will check this out

Globalsat BC-307 CompactFlash GPS + Backpack + XDA II

Hello chaps,
I'm trying to understand whether I can make these things work together.
Globalsat BC-307 is my existing CF format GPS card which I previously used with a jacket in a laptop - worked perfectly.
Today my O2 backpack has arrived. It has a CF slot, along with battery and VGA output.
There is only one way to insert that card in the backpack attached to XDAII). When I do it, my XDA II notifies me that an "Unknown Card 1" is found -- suggesting I need drivers.
Err... do TomTom or Destinator contain drivers for this card? Or...
__________________________
... could I have inserted the GPS CF card the wrong way? With PCMCIA sleeve for laptops, it was possible to do so -- in which case laptop would still detect the device (!) as unknown something, but there would be no COM port added and it wouldn't work properly.
In case of Backpack, though, the BC-307 won't go in the other way round, 'coz its edge would prevent it from going all the way in. However, the arrow on backpack and arrow on CF card are on different sides. You can't really insert CF card so that backpack arrow would align with card's arrow... The other way round, however, it fits perfectly.

Could use some information on this, 'coz I'm a bit confused. Would really like to avoid having to shell yet more money on a Bluetooth GPS receiver... I've already splashed like a huge frog in the pond. ;-)
On a dedicated PocketGPS World Forum I happened to come across some reports of other people having the same "Unknown Device" detected after inserting the CF GPS receiver into CF-enabled PocketPC's -- the wrong way.
In addition to my experience of unknown device detection when inserted the wrong way with a PCMCIA sleeve in a laptop, it makes me almost certain that indeed, this CF only goes inside the Backpack the WRONG way!
I am starting to think of any way to modify the GPS receiver case to let it in... as a last resort buying the BT GPS (308) version, but that's another hundred something quid
I just can't believe that this device was so designed as to fit the one and only way into the Backpack - and this is the wrong one...
BC-307 CF not working in XDAII backpack
A little late probably but I can confirm that the problem with using the BC-307 in the XDAII backpack is that the card is going in the wrong way round (the only way it will go in)
I had the same problem and have just fixed it by dismantling the BC-307 and turning the CF connector round in the case. The BC-307 case now inserts in to the XDAII backpack the same as before but the connector is the other way up and it is working correctly.

Wow. My respect -- I wouldn't dare probably.
Have you done any irreversible things during dismantling process? Can it be reassembled without any loss of functionality or exterior? I could try that myself, if you'd share some hints how to do it safely -- provided that it'll still work in my laptop as well as in Backpack
Actually since then I have bought a Bluetooth Fortuna Clip-On device (sigh... another one hundred quid... ) but then my car has a really suitable niche in the console (intended for cup holder, I think) for the BT unit and also BT device is great for in-car operation as you can put it anywhere
But I could use the Flash-Card device if walking, to not have lots of things to carry.

Wi-fi SD card - which one?

I've had my XDA2 for about 4 weeks and I'm so impressed with what it can do, several of my work colleauges have bought them after seeing mine.
My query is about wi-fi SD cards and peoples preferences. Which card offers better performance over others? I looked at Expansys and they have several on there site, including the Sandisk, which retails for over £100 yet are on e-bay for around £40!! Anyone recommend a good reliable card to use with my XDA? Thanks and Happy New Year.
the sandisk and the socket or whats the name is the same hardware and can share the same drivers
not sure if thats the case for all wifi cards
but the ones with onboard memory dont work with xda2's at all
I got the sandisk ages ago (without onboard memory)and it works a treat.
dont pay expansys price, that sounds wrong to me, I paid £60 when they first came out!
Thanks for the help, I'll proberly wait out on e-bay, although Expansys are still selling them at £103 http://www.expansys.com/product.asp?code=106495

Spectec on Himalaya with Magneto
Hello bluenovember!
I got one Spectec SD WiFi card (Mft Prod. No. WL6200480 - $89)
Does not work with Magneto 1.50i.96WWE, due unsuccessful driver installation.
Works well on YAKUMO Delta PocketPc with WM 2003 SE.
The same applies to Socket SD 802.11b PN 8510-00204A v2.1 ($95)
Does anyone (hopefully) have other experience?
I have the pocketGEAR SDIO WiFi. It only does 802.11b but only sticks out 6mm which makes it a far safer bet from a physical point of view - works great in my XdaII.
Got the wifi card how do I connect to the internet?
Hi, like Dfanton I have a Spectec 11b wlan card. (got through ebay £42)
The xdaII detects it fine, but when I press the InternetExplorer button it uses the GPRS connection.
How do I use the Wlan card? I got it to use the public hotspot in the canteen at work without having to haul my laptop about through security.
Any hints or tips would be appreciated.
Chris
Flyingvicar,
I presume you have installed the driver from the CD. If so click on it in program files to check that it is detecting the wi-fi signal and the settings match your wi-fi router.
If nothing is detected go to settings/connection/network card/netwok adaptors and choose spectec. Add your wi-fi to new settings and it should say connected.
BTW pockgetgear, spectec and computer devices .11b cards are all the same card.
y my xda2 just can't detect the spectec sd wifi????????
Safecom 802.11b PDA WiFi SDiO adapter - any good?
The Safecom 802.11b PDA WiFi SDiO adapter is currently selling on ebay for £28.49 (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SD-WiFi-WLAN-...873370821QQcategoryZ58542QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem) - does anyone know if this is this any good and if it will work okay with the XDA II?
(Incidentally, this is a good price as their main (non-ebay) website lists the same item at £34.99).
Many thanks

external Antenna?

Is there a spot to connect a external antenna like on tytn at the back?
No there is not.

Are you sure?
Its usually hidden somewhere in the battery compartment under a sticker or label or rubber plug. It might even be under the battery its self.
What is very strange i found it in one phone under a lable saying Void if removed...
Very odd considering the plug while not public common use. Is a perfectly viable antenna connection and often used in rigs, car phones and business.
But most phones have them.
Yes, this doesn't.
thnx for the info guys. hmmm this might change my descion to get it. unless it has better reception then i get with my Tytn i wont be able to get reception without it.
This is an issue for me too, as I just found this:
http://www.easydevices.co.uk/products.asp?partno=TCANTENNATPRO&model=
Says it's an external GPS antenna for the HTC Touch Pro...
Or would this work?
http://www.mobilefun.co.uk/product/10939.htm?referer=FR_PROD-PR-P-10939
The first thing is discontinued, obviously because they found out (probably by some angry buyers) that TP DOES NOT have a GPS plug.
The second is a full BT GPS device. Works with any BT enabled computer or PDA (inc. the TP).
GPS Antenna
I was also disappointed that there was no BT antenna available.
I was seaching some GPS antenna maker hoping to find some that could use existing MiniUSB port on TP but it seems the port is unable to support communication with GPS software.
So sad, this would have been a good enhancement to TP if there was MiniUSB GPS antenna maker.
Guys do you know what you are talking about?
I suppose not.
BT or USB are not "generic I do it all" technologies. They work based on specific protocols.
A GPS antenna is usually passive equipment - and even for active ones we mean that something amplifies the received signal.
THAT signal (and in fact the whole antenna), is "stupid". It is the part of the chipset to receive the ELECTRICAL data and make them into usable data.
I am not sure if I am getting through, my English are not the best, but the point is that you are looking in the wrong place for the wrong thing.
Now if you want a real USB or BT GPS that you will use instead of the internal ones, that's a whole different story. This works and actually does it by using the "COM" (serial) support that both USB and BT include.
To make the story more complete though, USB solutions will not work for devices that don't support "USB-host" (i.e. being the host part not the client part of the connection). Most WM don't have this (and yes Diamond and TP also don't). So you are left with BT.
To be honest if you are ready to pay for that premium (and you seem to be, by the links you give), what is your problem if what you connected is a full GPS that "replaces" the internal one or not?
I hope everything is more clear.
I presently use a TyTN II, and have an external aerial as the mount for the device is under a metal dash, so shields the signal...
I therefore need an external receiver for GPS.
Se here: http://freespace.virgin.net/shaw.clan/modifications.html and click on the TomTom hiolder link, although this is with the older QTEC 9100.
Make sense?
For driving with my Garmin in the car i used a Re-Radiating in my Xterra with excellent results.
This is basically the setup I have, although the internal antenna wasn't integrated into the power plug.

Mine is a bit more similar to this so you can control where you mount the internal antenna.

I have yet to test it on the Fuze but will probably do it when I have time this weekend. The change in signal strength is drastic (on the garmin).
Woow insanely expensive!

micro sim in sim slot works without adapter

Just thought I'd share if anyone else was wondering. I'm traveling and decided to get a second phone for texts when I head back to the States. Unfortunately, I already purchased a micro Sim card and related talk/text/internet plan for my main phone. I read about problems with adapters, so tried the "positioning" method. I just use the tape to make sure it doesn't jumble around on some of the rough roads around here, but don't think I had to use the tape at all. It works fine.
Picture attached.
Main phone: Samsung Galaxy S3 (micro Sim)
Second phone: Blackberry 9220
*Side note: I did not sign up for Blackberry Services. I had the Blackberry phone on and on WiFi before I put the Sim card in. Calling, text, and internet works fine.
Not all sim sockets are like that.
And may get stuck.

[Q] Replacing microSD slot with full sized SD slot (tablet)

Hi,
I am thinking turning an cheap chinese Android tablet (probably 7 inch) into home "sound system" or jukebox (offline use, wall mount + wall charger powered) together with my PC active speakers. It is only for a small room, I know about common quality of the sound output of such devices and do not take it as problem.
However, I would like to make it easier to store and replace albums etc. and thus need to replace the tablet microSD slot with a slot for standard SD cards (expect 32GB or more 16GB pieces) which are cheaper and much easier to remove. Are there any expected issues related to removing current slot and soldering the new one? As I know from using passive SD adapters for microSD cards - both slots should have same wiring.
Did anybody here already tried something similar? Would appreciate advices or comments.
there shouldnt be any problem with soldering a full size one on as inside sd to micro sd convertors there is no circuitry it is just a pin to pin connection. and your project sound quite cool actually hope everything goes well :good:
Yes, it's possible but i would be scared about doing something similar except if the tablet is dead and this is need to revive it.
You need a good hand to solder it, take care about near circuits! Don't keep your solder near circuits too much, just a few seconds to get you soldering!
Let us know if you'll try this mod!
Hi,
I know the circuitry is very sensitive and I planned to ask my friend who has professional soldering station. However, we just found out that the tablet we have (noname chinese 7-inch tablet without battery, but works OK on usb power) should support USB host (it is switched on in kernel and my brother found some info related the motherboard), so I will order some cheap USB host cable on Ebay and check this alternative first. It would be better for me as I could use common flash disks as music storage.
So will see....
