Device Help - General Topics

Hi all
just to throw a question into the mix, my company is currently undergoing trials to issue all it's employees with a GPRS enabled PDA,
wanting to purchase 200 for the intial trial and then rolling out 2000
Our requirments are a 3.5 inch screen and 128MB memory, and a quick processor but does not have to be lighting quick. (The Blue Angel is perfect)
The problem is a most company's are moving to the Wizard size 2.8 inch screen, and this is causing problems with all the apps we have developed,
My question is does anyone know companys that can supply this type of device,
Tried contacting HTC direct and they will not supply direct to us only telecom suppliers Orange etc, Orange says these machines are going end of life and have no stocks
Cheers All

Buying a new phone

Hi everyone, I am in the market for a new Pocket PC style phone with a QWERTY style keybaord on it. Through my research I have found out that all QWERTY style Pocket PC's are also phones.
So after looking around at a number of models out there the i-Mate JASJAR phone really caught my eye. However, also while looking around I found this site and figured I would ask an active community what my best choice would be. I will buy from anywhere in the world if it will be cheaper in the end.
I have a plan with Fido currently and a sim card in my LG phone working at the moment.
The things I need in a Pocket PC Phone:
Hardware
- Fido Canada Compatability (GSM ~1900) for phone
- WiFi (802.11b) for data
- Bluetooth support
- SD Card Slot for my 1gb card
- USB port to connect to computer
- Decent processor and RAM.
Software
- Windows 2005 (or whatever the latest is)
- General Word / Excel Applications
- MSN Messenger
I'm not used to looking up information about phones and cross compatibility, and being in canada all I am used to is being screwed up the rear with cell phone costs and locked phones. So thats why I am coming here for help.
Any help would be greatly appriciated.
Thank you all in advance.
Antonio the Knight of Ni.
Hello,
If all you you need are those listed, basically you can pick any PPC that is offered today by the cell phone providers today in North America, as it will be cheaper than buying an unlocked one. Mostly the providers today offered one of the Wizard varians, like in the USA, most of the providers (Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint), all of them carry of the Wizard varians, with price around US$350 for 2 years contract. Full price without contract here is around US$500.
I'm an owner of i-mate Jasjar (Universal). Compared to a Wizard, Jasjar/Universal is much more expensive here in North America, because no provider carry it, thus we have to buy full price.
Compared to Wizard, however, Universal has the following:
1. Processor is twice/more faster technically.
2. Screen is VGA, compared to Wizard (QVGA).
3. Heavier, bulkier, etc.
4. Universal is wow when used as a mini laptop, but Wizard is wow when used a mini PPC and phone.
I can tell you, I'm always impressed with my Uni when I read PDF doc, emails, remote connecting to my PC, watching videos.
All of your requirement can be easily fulfilled by a WIzard instead of a Universal.
Well, I am willing to spend up to $800 so I dont have to be in a contract, and my goal is to get it to work on my Canadian provider Fido. So, the phone is going to have to be unlocked in order for me to beable to use it on my provider as they dont sell any pocket pc phones, only their parent company rogers does but I am on a grandfathered contract with fido that gives me unlimited calling, so i would like to maintain that.
So, as far as unlocked phones go, your saying that the Jaspar is probly the best call? Excuse the pun.
In the market
I am in the market for a ppc phone as well and I have come down to a decision between the Universal and the Wizard, but I would like some user feedback about both models. I noticed the Wizard has a 200mhz TI cpu and the Universal has a 520mhz intel cpu. What is the actual performance difference between the two? Does the wizard use its clock cycles more efficiently closing some of the gap or is the universal really 2.6 times faster? What about the resolution difference? I think this might be a big selling factor for me. Does it make a big difference? I know on a computer I can't stand to use anything less than 1600x1200. The bottom line is it looks like it is going to cost me twice as much for the universal as the wizard is the extra money worth it? I am looking at using T-Mobile here in the states. They only offer the MDA(Wizard) and not the MDA Pro(Universal) but I think either way I will probably pick one up off of ebay and try and save some money. Thanks in advance for your help.
Last year, around Oct-Nov, I was in the same place you were today. I had the plan that I did not want to lose. I did not want to sign any new contract.
I want unlocked Pocket PC so that I can use it when I travel to Asia and any where. And I decided I would not mind to pay the full price. My budget was... however, I pushed it all the way to over $1000 in order to buy the best.
I considered that single invesment to fullfill at least many years to come needs, therefore, go with the most advance one, rather than buy a cheaper one, but half way.
That's the whole reason I was finally decided to get a Universal. But if you ask me to share my opinion with you today, after using Universal more than 6 months, I think it was not the best decision I made with the purchase. Do not get me wrong, I learned and experienced many new things since I had my Uni, and its extremely well built and nice device, nothing like it really. The screen especially, may be the best you will ever see in any Pocket PC. But for daily use, for phone, for carry around, for many occasions, I do not use it, simply its not pratical. I usually swiched back to my old one. Then I would blame myself, why did you buy it if you do not want to use it? Sad
Most of the time now I leave my Uni at home to be used with my home wifi. I have seen many ppl are happier with their decision to get a smaller scale one like Wizard or Prophet. Prophet is about the same size with the Wizard, except its thinner as it has no keyboard but better button layout. They do not mind even though the screen is a quarter than the Universal and the processor speed is half of the Universal as well. And indeed, for daily practical use (phone, email, notes) it does serve the purpose. Absolutely, when you want to browse the web, then smaller screen is not as good as VGA like Universal Smile When it comes to size and easy carry, smaller size is better.
Hope I'm not making your more confused. But if I can re-decide I would pick a Prophet instead. Since I have decided with a Uni, I'm happy to live with it as I do not want/cannot afford a new one right now.
KJam and Jamin (Wizard and Prophet) are identical in term of hardware spec (procesor, memory, etc) but has different apperance.
KJam/Wizard is thicker because it has a keyboard, Jamin/Prophet does not have one, but Jamin/Prophet has a better button layout that will allow single handed use of the device.
The last thing which is very important to know as well, KJam/Wizard use Mini SD, Jamin/Prophet use SD (Full size). Many ppl (like myself) will not buy something that use mini SD as I have invested quite a lot in big size SD card and would like to continue using the same card.
keep in mind that canada and a lot of the US uses 1900 and 850 freq for cellular
that being said, the wizard will work in more places than the universal because there are places that are 850 only and the universal doesn't have it
but if you want more pda features, then you'll have to give up some possible reception
Here, check out this link:
http://www.htcamerica.net/products/default.htm
Here you can find all the Wizard variants that are being offered in the US market, by each cell phone provider. Canadian providers are also listed here.
I signed up for service with T-Mobile a week ago and just got a crappy $10 Samsung R225m for the time being. I decided I will get The Universal and if I know I am going somewhere out in the boonies where I will need 850mhz analog I will grab the samsung. Is cloning your sim legal? Like let us say I want to have multiple cards in case something happens or if i want a data telemtry device in my car which would be used rather infrequently to share everything.
Wait a minute.... I was just looking and the Universal doesn't have EDGE does it? Does anyone in the states know how widespread T-Mobile's EDGE coverage is? How much of a difference does it make in speed?

TytYN vs. Hermes

What is the difference between these two phones (if any) and what are the differences between them and the Wizard?
Iy would be great if someone (e.g HTC) had a simple features comparison on their website but I guess that is asking for a little too much!
it's the same device... just different name

yes they are planning from now sell also under the brand name HTC
The TyTN is the HTC branded Hermes. T-Mobile will call it the vario II, Orange the M3100 or something and HTC names it's own device the TyTN. They are all the same hardware, only software can differ from carrier to carrier, the same as in the past with Qtek, I-Mate, T-Mobile etc. HTC chose not only to produce the Hermes, but to market the device under their own brand name as well as the TyTN.
The main differences with the Vario I are UMTS, HSPDA ready, better camera, extra cam for video telephone, jog dial and different design and button lay-out.
Dopod call Dopod 9000 or CHT9000 came out Taiwan market today, price will be NT$25,800.00 about US$800.00.

I started doing some digging and I am now wondering if it is really better than the Wizard. Here is what I found (warning - this is to the best of my knowledge and my uasge for the device may vary from yours so as always YMMV)
Here are the pros...
Faster processor (nice and sweet!)
more connectivity (nice if cingular gets the network up!)
Better camera (although this is a wash for me since I don't use the camera for anything close to serious.)
Jog dial - might be nice
Washes
Screen size and quality - same (not that it is bad now though)
Size - About the same. TyTN is a little longer but a bit narrower and not as deep.
Memory - Same with 128/64 and I was hoping this would be better.
Cons
Weight - The TyTN actually weighs more (26g) than the Wizard or at least the 8125 version. Not a huge deal but would be nicer to go the other way, especially if the extra weight is for a second camera for videophone that I will never use!
Micro SD - This is debatable but I see three negatives here... MicroSD does not have the capcaity that MiniSD does and I will have to get all new cards. Also mini sd is $34 for 1GB and micro SD is $47 or 38% more expensive (from new egg) If at least the tradeoff was a siginificantly smaller form factor then I would say it was okay but that is not the case so why!
odd Headphone jack - Okay, most people probably use bluetooth anyway so who cares about a hard jack, but why make upgrading any more costly than it is now. If it is to get a higher sound quality, who cares since with the reduced storage space of Micro SD it is not like you can load up 320 kbps mp3s anyway!
So basically my question is why would most people upgrade? This seems like a mild improvement at best with enough potential cons to make it a no go. That is really disappointing!
well my two cents on the Wizard and the Hermes ....
before the Cingular 8125 came out or any of the HTC Wizard flavors were available in the US, the Hermes has been in the news so i myself was planning to get an O2 XDA mini S (which i was planning to use in California) to somewhat replace my XDA Exec, I read about the Hermes and told myself to hold off and wait for the 3G version of the Wizard ... Note that the processor's clock speed is twice of the wizard ... Note also that the same Hermes CPU has been compared equal or better than the XDA Exec's Intel XScale 520Mhz CPU ...
If you are using the Cingular network then you might want to go get the Hermes maybe around the end of the year since 3G won't be available until then for Cingular ... while T-Mobile, well forget it, they won't roll out 3G in the next 2 years or so ...
It's just disappointing that we in the US are behind in mobile phone technology ... yeah we're catching up but we're still behind ....
For me the biggest plus is the UMTS. in Holland we have a 9.5 euros per month data plan with unlimited GPRS/WIfi/UMTS. A nice offer to go with the Hermes. You are right that the extra weight and the micro SD are cons, but since I hav not yet invested too much in mini SD that is not really an issue for me. Neither is the headset plug, I use the standard ones or a BT headset, so no biggie for me, especially since the Hermes will feature A2DP. And the extra weight is not important for me, I'm strong enough for the extra 26 gr.
The faster processor and the jog dial alone are worth the upgrade for me especially since it will not cost me much. Maybe 200 euros with a 1 year extension, so that's reasonable (Vario I only cost me 84 euros with a 1 year extension for 22.5 euros per month). UMTS is enough to really make the decision easy for me, let the Vario II arrive!

Partly true. The Mhz of the Hermes is twice as much and that might mean that the clock speed is doubled, but the overall speed and performance is not necessarily twice as high.
Different architecture makes an OMAP processor not easily comparable to an XScale or Samsung processor, at least not just based on Mhz. OMAP is double core and other architectural differences make the comparison above too simplified. You can compare it to the AMD and Intel processors, different Mhz (Ghz) but equal or better performance.
Anothe example are the MP in a digital camera. Just the amount of pixels does not mean much, 6 MP camera's with inferior lenses and chips may perform worse than 4 Mp camera's with better lenses and chips. We see it everyday in our beloved HTC devices, 1.3 MP in a Wizard sounds nice, but I know vga (300k) camera's that make better pictures than the Wizard.
Don't get blinded by the Mhz of the processor, that's all I want to say.

for me umts is the plus
and the cam is the thing i care little about
the quality of cmos cams which are used in mobiles
because the ccd which real dig cams use, use too much power
is poor even if it's 10MP
their problem is not pixels but colours and light sensitivness
imho they can only be used to photo poor pictures of loch ness
and ufo's and then you can mms the photo to your friends or something
I think the first CCD phone/pda was announced this week. The Qool Labs QDA Icon http://asia.cnet.com/reviews/handhelds/0,39001708,39260541p,00.htm

Gotta be I guess...
Hermes is the project CodeName
Typically, when hardware or software products are originally developed, the engineering group chooses a code name for the project/product, so that (1) it will be easily spoken and recognized which project you're talking about in daily conversation (within the circle of people involved in it), and (2) to make it harder for competitors to initially figure out what the project is about if they hear the name. Hermes was HTC's code name for the development project for a device whose derivatives were ultimately produced under a variety of different Marketing Names for HTC's distribution partners (eg, O2, Vodaphone, Cingular, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc). Recently, HTC decided to distribute a Hermes version under their own marketing brand ("HTC Tytn", and developed a reseller distribution channel for that brand outside of their original wireless carrier partners.
Another example of this that many folks have already heard of: Microsoft's code name for the development of a future operating system project that they started back around 2001 or so was "Longhorn"; the resulting product(s) from that project is about to ship now as "Vista". BTW, an interesting bit of trivia on this one: the MS engineering team that develop Windows were being taken to Whistler/Blackcomb ski resort in BC once per year (perk) to party & relax. So when it came time to come up with a code name for the next version of Windows to develop, they chose "Whistler" (the products coming out of this project were eventually given the names by Marketing as "Windows XP" and "Windows Server 2003"). Shortly after the Whistler project began, they also began the development of Whistler's successor, and gave it the code name of "Blackcomb" (which is the twin mountain at the ski resort next to Whistler Mountain); however, the development timeline for the original specs of Blackcomb was underestimated, feature-creep also set in which lengthened completion even more, so it became apparent that an "interim" version of Windows needed to be released before Blackcomb was ready. At the ski resort' base village, the gondola lift stations for the two mountains are a short walking distance apart, and in-between them is a bar called the "Longhorn Saloon", so they named this "in-between" development project Longhorn; as mentioned above, the Marketing name assigned to the products from this project is Vista. Meanwhile, further delays and problems plagued the Blackcomb project, so another project & code name came into existence "Vienna", and it is now uncertain whether project Blackcomb will continue or if Vienna takes its place (probably the latter). The Vienna code name came about because it is one of the cities of the world with a spectacular vista (view). Just goes to show that there are usually interesting stories behind how the development groups choose project code names, and how creative they can be. Makes you wonder what the story is behind HTC choosing the "Hermes" name, huh?
I too have both the Wizard (Cingular 8125 version) and a new HTC Tytn version of Hermes. The most important differences to me are:
> A2DP/AVRCP, and it works! (supports stereo Bluetooth headphones)
> Jog-dial (I'll use keys before stylus any chance I can get)
> Faster processor (Need for Speed)
> 2mp camera (I've rarely used a phone camera in the past because of low-res/poor quality, but now we're getting into the ballpark of acceptable quality pix)
> teleconferencing camera on the front (curious about using a potentially very cool feature as teleconferencing continues to grow among my friends & family)
> UMTS/HSDPA (Need for Speed again). Browsing with Edge is a pain in the *ss. I've become addicted to UMTS in my notebook computer wireless card...almost like DSL, and now I can actually USE the phone for browsing. I'm a "blue-side" (ATT Wireless) Cingular customer, fortunate to have UMTS around me here.
> I think the Tytn is immediately superior to the Wizard phones over-all. Worth getting one now, instead of waiting for UMTS network completion.
I concur with the previous poster about the Tytn shortcomings, in particular:
> No 2.5/3.5mm headset jack (the HTC guys that decided that one should be hung by their tongues); I'm building an adapter right now so that I can hopefully use some decent headphones & mike (the earbuds/mike that comes with the phone is crap)
> headphone connector (miniUSB) is located in an unusual location, such that third party carrying cases' made for the installed base of popular HTC phones (eg, Vaja) now have the headphone hole cut-out in the "wrong" location (ie, can't listen to mp3 music via wired headphones when the phone is in the case, unless you butcher the case to make a hole in the "right" location)
> boring aesthetic design...in a world where Motorola, Sony and now even
Samsung are leading the market in sexy styling, the HTC phones are looking pretty staid & grim.
> When is a Windows Mobile phone going to get a reliable voice-dialer, like that of the Treo (had one of those before the Wizard)? This thing is a deaf & dumb when it comes to voice recognition!
> the freakin' dial-pad buttons are STILL too small (Wizard has same problem)! I'm constantly fat-fingering the wrong keys on the screen, and I'm tired of using my fingernail to dial...does anyone out there have a better dial-pad that takes up most of the screen that can be loaded into this thing?

Fed up with HTC and I-mate ultimates delayed, need a replacement!

Hi Guys
I have a HTC TyTN which I am using beyond its capabilities. I have upgraded it to WM6 and use a lot of the extra functionality that it contains however, I find it too slow and the screen is to low res. I am also seriously ****ed off with HTC build quality and it now has a fourth hardware issue that I cannot be bothered to return it for. - NO It has not been dropped, in fact its been treated better than an eggshell!
I was originaly looking at replacing it with an I-Mate Ultimate 5150 but I have now heard that they are not being released until November. I can't wait this long. I need a phone that can do all of the following but is NOT made by HTC
runs WM6
has HSDPA/3G
has Bluetooth/Not bothered about WiFi
is faster than this rubbish Samsung 2442A processor at 400mhz
ideally has more than 128meg ram - optional
has an optional extended battery
supports push Exchange email
Last but by no means least, MUST have a 640*480 screen
has a slide out/slide down keyboard
must NOT be made by HTC - no matter how well re-badged it is!
The monstrosity that is the JasJar is simply too big and doesn't support HSDPA anyway. Budget is not too much of a problem but I don't want to go bigger in size than the Ultimate 5150. I will be buying off-contract.
Apart from the I-Mate Ultimates, I can't find any phones to meet this criteria, anyone else know of any? I'm desperate!
Thanks loads in advance for saving my life!
wow you're not asking for much...and limiting yourself to the small (albeit increasing) percentage of the market that is non-HTC isnt helping you. But then again HTC is a product cycle behind everyone else with VGA so no foul...
In any case your pretty well limited to:
Toshiba G900. Everything you want bar the Processor. Has a possibly low Samsung Processor onboard.
beyond that any other devices coming close to that criteria are comprimises
ie GLofish X800, Gigabyte T300 (Like the G900 due for Release soon). VGA screens aren't that all come on at the moment, but are gradually improving, this is certainly the year for them.
Hi
Thanks for that! Looking like the device for me
And yes, im a firm believer of never buying another product from a manufacturer when something I have bought from them has failed repeatedly. From what I understand, i'm not the only one that has a HTC device thats failed over and over again - google tells me this!
Anyway, i've alreadly found this for sale for 379 and that was with my first google!
Thanks again!!
Hi,
I am pretty much on the same boat, although I am reasonably happy with my TyTN... I just want more!
I have been looking at:
- Toshiba G900 - 800x480 screen, only slightly larger than the TyTN
- E-TEN Glofish X500+ - only just saw this in a magazine yesterday, it is supposed to be a 640x480 version of the X500, and it will be sold by Expansys... although its not on their website yet!
Monty: I know how you feel about HTC, which is why I went from BA -> Flame.
My requirements were slightly different. In descreasing order of importance:
At least 3.5" screen. 2.8 - 3.2" screens are too small, both for my eyes and my hands (with stylus).
VGA.
Lightweight and fits in pocket. (Rules out Universal and Athena.)
Portrait-normal form factor. I gotta be able to hold it in one hand and tap the stylus in the other, comfortably.
2.5G. 3G is still new here, and I can live with 2.5G speeds because of what I use it for (ssh).
Bluetooth. No need for GPS or KB if you have BT.
Prefer no keyboard or a hidden slide-out keyboard -- I'll use a soft, USB or BT keyboard instead of a keyboard with keys too tiny for my fingers, which ends up simply increasing the thickness of the device most of the time.
No HTC device satisfies these requirements. Only the XDA Flame does.
The HTC Panda is a throwback since it doesn't have VGA. Otherwise it might be an acceptable alternative when it comes out.
The iMate Ultimate 7150 would be my second choice when it comes out, despite its keyboard (looks hidable and does not increase thickness of device too much).
Until something better comes out, I'll stick with the Flame.

heard? who did u hear it from??
"The highly acclaimed Ultimate range from i-mate will be on offer to customers throughout the region from Sept 2007"
http://msmobiles.com/news.php/6461.html
Toshiba G900 has 128M RAM, 128M ROM and a Marvell PXA270 520 Mhz cpu.
It has been released in the UK. The manual is available online - at the Toshiba.co.uk mobile communications site.
Not only is this faster than the SAMSUNG on the TyTN, but is also current Xscale / ARM - the Samsung was two generations out of date ... and generally regarded as end of line long before the TyTN came out.
Imate???? Their customer support SUCKS!!! I've had JasJam for 7months now and have had enough. No phone support. Representatives have NO IDEA what they are chatting about - absolutely no knowledge and noone responds to emails!!!!
Personally I am impressed by the imate ultimate series whenever it is released but I am troubled by their customer support.
For almost 3 months now the clubimate site (Jasjam) page mentions that a newer version of the operating system will soon be released. When I finally got on line with them yesterday the person mentioned that it has already been released. Before I could ask him where it is posted the on line chat disconnected not to be connected again. But I am sure that clown had no idea of what he was talking about.

HTC X7510 or HTC Touch pro?

Hello everyone!
I sold my Athena in the favour of the upcoming HTC Touch Pro, but now I am wondering... Is it better to but the new X7510?
Can you please tell me what the differences are between the old X7500 and the new X7510?
I do know that X7510 has an 16GB SSD drive instead of the 8 GB Hard Drive, but what else is new?
With my X7500 I had some problems while watching videos, that the audio and video got out of sync after a while, I read somewhere that it was becouse the X7500 did not have the proper drivers installed, just like the Tytn II devices! Is that still an issue with the X7510?
Also I think that the X7500 did not perform very well in other applications either, to give you an example: TomTom was performing much better on the Tytn II then it was on the X7500 even tough tytn II has a slower cpu!
Please tell me if this new X7510 still has the same issues, and what more except the harddrive is changed?
Looking forward to your reply!
my X7510 is still on original HTC ROM, and running great with TomTom 7 (it comes free with TomTom 6)
i do not notice any noticeable slowdown
MP3 and Videos running fine, via my Bluetooth headsets.
coming from a Palm Treo, everything seems wAY!! faster for me. LOL
on the same topic, since i'm coming from the Palm World, i transfered my licenses to software i know by heart
Pocket Tunes for MP3 and TCPCMP for videos (freebie), and many other applications, that i transfered from Palm to PPC
I also was choosing between those two devices, and i went for the X7510 becuase big screen, and 16GB flash.
Darn, you beat me to it, I was going to post a thread on the two. You should insert a Poll, to see what people think.
You might not like the X7510 because you previously own a X7500. The major complaint is the lack of hard buttons. But for me, I don't need anything except the home button, so the X7510 is perfect for my needs.
Heres the poll!

Yeah I do know that there is less hardware buttons, but I dont really need them on athena anyway! The most important thing for me to know right now is if there is a problem with missing drivers like on the X7500?
How is watching videos, does it skip frames like on X7500, does the audio/video come out of sync?
What is the biggest difference in the hardware between the X7500 and X7510, does it have another chipset or what?
These are all the questions that I need answered!
I see that I'm the first voter!
For me, if my interest is in watching video (and I watch lots of them), there is a no brainer that a 5 inch screen is the way to go. I don't have any issue with the driver or anything like that. I find the video fluid and smooth, sound clear. I just do't demand it to be as good as my home theatre system in terms of clarity and sound quality that's all. I have lots of youtube collections and even if I watch them in 100% size, where the clarity is the best, the picture size is probably still as big as stretching it 200% on a 2.8 inch screen.
By the way, there is nothing wrong with the driver. I came across an article before explaining that even HTC did not know that it was not their fault that the ATI Imageon Decorder is not peforming. Apparently it is because another party had intentionally disabled some capability due to licensing and pricing issue. So it was a pricing rather than technical issue that we are not getting the best performance. If I come across that article again, I'll post it.
Other than being the best device to play video, Athena (whether it is 7500,7501, or 7510) are also best internet device out there at the moment. I've tried using iPhone which has only a miserable 3.2 inch. Although it has a very nice Safari, using it for internet is a pain. Everytime I want to see something, I have to use my finger to stretch it until the text are large enough to be readable. I then have to keep scrolling left and right to read. With Athena and Opera Mobile 1184, I can read without zooming in and out (if I set the minimum overview zoom to 85%). It is so easy.
Then, when come to using Softmaker or Office application, the 5 inch screen is simply unmatchable.
Even my TomTom 7, which runs very fast BTW, looks much better on the 5 inch than on 2.8 inch screen. Talking about TT7's speed, make sure you use the right ROM, as I did have issue with loading speed and memory on some ROM. Use the latest irus new 0MB pagepool ROM, MiChY 1.88, or Sogarth base ROM. The former two are particularly fast and TomTom friendly. My start screen is displayed in split seconds, and does not get half frozen like in some earlier ROMs.
I did have chance to play with a 2.8 inch device lately, and I was just too frustrated with the unacceptably small screen size. It is not finger friendly for me for most of the applications.
As your poll is between 7500 and TouchPro, I will not mention too much about the hardware button. However, as I use the device tablet style, I got to have those bottons. When using MP3 programs, I use it to skip song, repeat songs, volum up, down, blank screen, go to song list, etc. In mail, I use it to go to next mail, next account, etc. In news feed, the same things. When I walk around with MP3 in my pouch, I do not want to take it out, turn on the power, change a song, find a way to blank the screen, and put it back to my pouch. So, hope that settles once and for all why buttons are so indispensable for tablet style users, which I believe account for about half of Athena owners.
Another thing I should point out is that the microdrive is not less unreliable than my storage card, other than being a lot faster. This is based on my own experience after almost one and a half year of use by now.
I do not say that the Athena has no room for improvement. There are plenty to improve on. But there is no device out there good enough to replace it yet.
x7510 or Touch Pro
I currently own a x7500, Iphone 3g, HTC Diamond, Blackberry curve, blackberry pearl. Sometimes I wonder why do I need so many devices. The truth is that I like each of them for their different features. Let me share with you my knowledge from experience. HTC Diamond or HTC Pro. Though the display is sharp the screen size is way too small for serious pda users. I believe you guys are if not you will not be accessing this website. As such this device is a no no.
The Blackberry curve is good for emails as its reliable and the price plan is quite cheap. (Cheap I will explain later) Emails are really fast and reliable. Blackberry pearl, typing is not that convenient but I like it as the size of the phone is small.
The iphone 3g, its a love and hate device. A week ago, I brought it roaming in Japan. With mobile me I received about 120 emails in 2 days. Replied to about 8 of them. Check 2 websites. Made a 5 minute phone call. The bill for roaming came out to be about US$150 for that 2 days of usage. Although Mobile me is more superior as it can display pictures and html, the cost of using it overseas will make it an impractical option. In addition the emails do not arrive as fast as the blackberry emails. Someone above mentioned that you have to zoom in and out with your fingers. Actually there is an easy way. All you need to do is tap twice on the paragraph you are interested and it automatically zooms in. Video display is first class. The software seems to run smoother than pocket pc. In addition, it feels smarter and faster. Its a love and hate relationship. Though I like the software, there are many things I dislike. That is why I am still carrying my HTC Advantage
HTC Advantage x7500, is one of the best all rounder. You can edit excel, you can save any kind of documents on the device. You can sync notes and tasks with outlook. You can have tom tom or mapking on it. You can cut and paste from calendars or contacts to anywhere.
These are the things iphone cannot do. Just waiting everyday patiently for an update from Apple itunes is driving me crazy. Not only that you cannot sync it with your work and home computer. You have to pay for most of the useful software like Skype and so on
I am tempted to give my iphone to my wife and continue using the HTC Advantage.. Though I don't own a x7510. I think the main problem with it is that HTC did not spend enough efforts to main it a better device. They have the technology to increase the download speed from 1.8 mb/sec to 7.2 mb/sec but they didn't. HTC Diamond is running on 7.2 mb/sec. This actually have a big impact when you are watching youtube or slingbox using 3g. Unlimited data plan is already so common in where I live and it will be the same for the rest of the world will be so common in the next 1 to 2 years.
Hope these information help you guys in deciding which is the best device for you.
It will be very hard to acept the screen of PRO for you. After 5 inches i cant work with my Nokia E61. The main problem of Athene is the fact that ATI and HTC dont want to use the whole abilities of these phone. The ATI cheep doesnt work correct. But still X7500 is amasing. I dont need 16GB of memory, but i need hardware buttons. And i wount change my phone neither to 7510 neither HTC PRO
He is talking about the 3.6 touch pro2. I will hopefully also get it in a month or two and I think my Athena will be relegated to when i have ebooks or movies to catch upon use.
You made a big mistake the x7510 has no equal you got scammed like a sucker

hello everyone!

DUDE YOU NEED to sell off the blackberry pearl and curve as the bold is superior to those 2 devices in every category you can even get the bold refurb for FREE on at&t the htc diamond don't even support at&t 3g a waste of money as the X7510 is superior in all aspects. I would sell off the x7500 and diamond for the x75210 or even the Leo and sell off the curve and pearl for profit and upgrade blackberry plan with bold or magnum(q4 realease) and get a better blackberry and extra $$$.

I came from the X7500 I owned for nearly two years until it got broken - exactly when my phone contract had to be prolenged by two more years.
I was looking around for a new device and ended up to order a X7510 - I even asked my provider (T-Mobile) to sell me a new device although they hadn't listed it any more.
In my eyes there is actually no other device available offering this huge screen in addition with 16GB internal memory and the possibility to install even more memory via SD-card. I use my devica mainly for business purposes when travelling (mostly by car) - calling contacts, making appointments, adding new tasks and so on - therefore the bigger the screen the better...
The first weeks with my X7510 I was missing the hardware buttons - but meanwhile...no more.
The only thing I'm still sad of is the missing support here for my X7500 there are lots of Roms to play with and those were better than the OEM Roms
Nowadays with my X7510 I kept the original T-Mob Rom and added SPB Mobile Shell - I think the device is now very close to my ultimate phone
However - there could be a little bit more memory - maybe I'll try Michy again

Due for an upgrade but what to go for....

Hi guys,
What it is I'm with T-mobile and I've been offer a few tariffs one includes free calls all day to all networks and free txt but not including voicemail or mms for £35pm + a handset on a 24 month contract or the same deal without the phone on a 12 month contract.
Also I was offered I think it's called the flex 35 - 900 minutes + my off peak calls to all networks from 7pm - 12am and all weekend with a handset on a 18 month contract.
The phones I was after Nokia N900 - Samsung Omnia Hd or the Hero, phonehone don't seem to have in stock apparently. Just want to check if my choices of phones are worth holding out for.
I would like the phone to have a large display screen, an easy touchscreen to scroll, not like my current htc diamond with it's lousy touchscreen and crappy internet - also I would like it to have tv-out with the option of play xvids on the phone and finally gps so I can install tomtom.
That's it...
Leo, Topaz or Rhodium are great choices to consider if $ is not the problem
$ really isn't but I kinda wouldn't mind staying away from htc for a year or so. Just check out your recommendations on youtube and it's like I'm still seeing my diamond.
I would not expect the N900 to be available from Operators... At least not in a near future. The reason is that the N900 is a fairly open Linux machine, which includes a root shell, meaning you can do anything you like on software terms. This is normally not what Operators like. They prefer to customize a perfectly good phone to death...
My opinion: either get an iPhone or an HTC.
Reasons:
1) iPhone is a great phone, no matter what people say.
2) You can get a pretty good discount for your phone with a contract. After the contract, the phone is probably still worth more than what you had to pay for it.
3) If you prefer Android or WM, go with an HTC: on this forum you will certainly find customized ROM's to get rid of locks and customisations made by the Operator.
Cheers,
vma
I recommend anything but the iPhone
Go for HTC's many choices...
Well I guess Htc it is, please I really hope the touch screen as improved significantly from the touch diamond. Is there a main one to really consider or as orbit3000 said either: Leo, Topaz or Rhodium?
Well I guess it's really up to the kind of things you want to do with you device, and what size you want your device to be...
- The Leo is huge and has a superb 4.3 inches capacitive touchscreen, which may please you if you are unsatisfied with your diamond touchscreen. Hardware-wise the Leo is a "new generation" phone that can handle a lot. Rumour says that it may get a WM7 upgrade in the future
- Topaz is the Diamond 2 and has a similar size but a larger touchscreen. The hardware is standard HTC with nothing spectacular
- Rhodium is more business-centric with the sliding keyboard for fast typing. It also has some advanced conf-call features that you may like if you use your phone for your work. Hardware is nothing special either, standard Qualcomm 72XX processor
I would suggest you to go in a shop to get a feeling of the size of the three devices as the Leo and the Rhodium are significantly bigger than your old phone.
