Problem Flashing ROM, where none existed before - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

I have an O2 XDA Mini (Magician) which I picked up in Germany. It originally had a German ROM. I accidentally tried to upgrade the ROM on the device with an English Language Himalaya ROM. All it succeeded in doing was wipe the original German ROM and leaving nothing in its place.
I've urgently been trying to Flash English Language Magician ROMs through the Bootloader ... and the best I can do with a couple of them is get to 6% of Stage Three (Upgrading the CE image). It seems to go through Stages One and Two OK (Radio and ROM) ... but cuts out at 6% of Stage Three. I've been trying o2s 1.12.00 ... WWE_111.132_NoIDmod. With all of them I can only get started using the 'MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe' file to get passed the 'country' and sundry error messages ...
But I just can't get passed 6% of the final Stage ... Stage Three.
Anybody got any ideas?

Upgrading to a non-Magician ROM can damage the unit.

@nietzche: You should try the SD-card-image version. Maybe this can save your unit.

I recognise that's a possible solution ... but I can't for the life of me find anSD version of a ROM and a means to get it on a card. I see all the time ways to get a ROM from the device onto a card (Backup) ... and play with it ... but can't find a way to use a SD card ROM from scratch.
Would really appreciate finding a WWE SD ROM version etc.

There are no such things as ROM in SD cards but there are tutorials in this forum on how to transfer the ROM image to an SD card and then use the SD card to load the ROM into your unit.

I do truly appreciate the advice ... but all I've been able to gather from this site (and others) is the instructions to get a ROM onto an SD card from the device ... which is something I obviously can't do. If you could help me find advice on how to take a ROM and create a ROM image on a SD card VIA a PC, I'd greatly appreciate it. (In the old Wallaby days there used to be a tool developed here at this developers site that allowed you to 'copy' a ROM onto a SD card ... but there doesn't appear to be anything like that for any later models including the Magician ROMs.)
In the end ... maybe the easiest thing to do is send a SD card to someone who can copy their ROM onto my card and get it back to me ... any takers?

There are tools to write that SD image to a file which can be sent via internet - so no need to ship SD cards around the world. Unfortunately I use a localized ROM so I can't help you with that.

The SD card is used only if BigStorage ROM is desired. To install a ROM in a normal way, just dock your unit via USB and disable the USB setting in ActiveSync. Extract the ROM and replace the file MaUpgradeUt.exe with MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe which can be found in the ftp. Finally double click on the file MaUpgradteUt_noId.exe and it should start installing.

Thanks Zerimar ,,, but as noted in the first post of this thread, I can't seem to succeed in getting passed Stage Three of the installation through the bootloader. That's the reason I need to try and load a ROM via the sd card. Is it possible for someone to upload a WWE SD image?

Sorry for that nietzche , it seems that my eyes are failing me.
I'm not so sure anymore but I think the ROM must be somehow specific to the device for a standard ROM upload. What you can try do is make a BS ROM out of any shipped ROMs or download any of the BS ROMS. There are also guides written by Ampda and Oltp on how to make a BS ROM, what tools (software) you need in this forum.

Storage area missing after mkbigstorage

I would be absolutely grateful if someone has any type of answer to this problem. Won't go in to a lot of detail as to how many attempts have been made but will suffice to say that this has been a major time sink.
The upshot of the problem is that the "Storage" area has completely disappeared from the MDA Compact and the following summarizes the attempt to recover and how I wound up there:
1. Attempted mkbigstorage upgrade to MDA Compact.
2. All attempts failed at reloading modified mkbigstorage nb1 image from SD card at 63% of load.
3. Performed straight load of WWE 1.12 image, then performed d2s via "romupdate" to SD card. This was 100% successful. Attempted bootload of same exact ROM (without even doing anything to it or even removing it from the device) and received load error at 63% again.
4. Have loaded several different versions of ROM (nbf files) and wind up with the same result of the Storage area completely missing from MDA Compact.
5. Any attempt at "any" nb1 load from SD card gives error at 63% of load unless the specific d2s command of "d2s 80040000 023C0000" is provided. This strictly backs up the operating system and nothing more. (no ext_rom, radio, etc.). But after applying the mkbigstorage changes to this rom and reload (which is successful by the way), the Storage area is still missing from the unit.
Most ROMs that have been located via the nbf file type, work ok (1.03, 1.06, 1.11, etc.) but still don't show the Storage area any more after a load.
It seems as if the nbf file type ROM loads don't overwrite/correct the problem I'm experiencing with the original Storage area.
I have read through (I think) every single posting about mkbigstorage and can't seem to locate any reasonable solution to my problem.
The ideal correction would be to get the MDA Compact back to a state where the Storage area is recognized by the O/S, then go from there.
The unit is usable but it takes about 3 minutes for a soft reset. After which, the Storage area doesn't show within the system or as an alternative for an app install during ActiveSync.
I originally backed up the ROM that was already loaded before this whole mess began and have attempted to reload but an error results about not being able to update Section 1.
Any information at all would be most welcome. I am not real enthusiastic about having to take this thing to a service center. Being in the US, most of our T-Mobile centers would just look at it and wonder what the heck it is.
Please provide any insight that might help.
Thanks.
The whole problem is with the area address of ROM you used while dump with d2s. I have also faced the same issue and only way to solve the same by restoring from your original backup or dump the rom from another magician using d2s only and restore the same your magician. Do dont use any address locations. Please remember while doing the dump backup for BigStorage use only D2S no other address locations.
My initial SD backup with d2s (first step performed before all this started) was only using d2s with no address. It performed a 100% backup of my original rom and I still have it.
When attempting to put the original ROM back on, it fails with the "Address=1 not allowed" error. I'm not sure if another copy of the ROM from another Magician would help but I'm willing to try just about anything.
Are there any tools available to clear out parts of the ROM completely?
A little more information on current standing:
1) Tried to load original ROM and received "Section=1 not allow update".
2) I then backed up what was already loaded on the compact (1.12).
3) Copied the first 416 bytes in to the original ROM file.
4) Tried to reload ROM. This time it let me begin the flashing but failed at 63%.
5) Did the same procedures as above but this next attempt I ran the mksBigStoragerENG.exe program, then created a new ROM file.
6) Tried to reload this new ROM and received a fail at 63% again.
I'm stumped at this point. It won't take the original ROM at all.
Any suggestions folks?
Use a backup restore from another magician. I think this is the only way to do it. But while do the same never backup device information from the another magician.
The original ROM was T-Mobile 1.01. I have attempted to perform an SD load of both my original backup (made with just "d2s") and a downloaded T-Mobile 1.01 .nb1 file.
Both files have had the first 416 bytes replaced with the current ROM information (tried both with and without).
When loading, I either get "Sections=1 not allow update" or if I'm lucky enough to get past that, I then get download fail at 63%.
If a straight load (using .nbf files for WWE 1.12) is performed via the standard update utility, all works fine but after reset, the Storage area is still gone.
I'm not sure if the Storage area can ever be recovered after a failed attempt at mkbigstorage. Many hours have been put in to this and I can see no solution at this point.
As stated earlier, the unit is still usable with the straight 1.12 load but it takes about 3 minutes for a soft reset, then the Storage area is still missing though.
Has anyone seen this at all and can point me in the right direction? I'd be happy at this point to get it back to the way it was (1.01 with the Storage area viewable) but can see no way to revert the ROM back to it's original condition.
Thanks for the information about possibly loading a different nb1 file.
I have tried both my original backup and a different nb1 file backup from the ftp site. After getting past all the device information on both loads, both still come up with a load failure at 63%. This has been the problem all along. The Magician will never load anything past 63%.
I am finally convinced that the internal ROM is somehow corrupted beyond repair via just standard ROM loads or backup/restores.
Not sure what to do at this point but try to get it to a dealer.
I think I have finally located the problem with why my flashes fail and the Storage area is missing. This section of the ROM seems to be messed up:
82400000-82c00000 00800000 backup area ( contacts, calendar, etc )
This is the internal Storage area of the ROM. A standard ROM update doesn't touch this area so this is why I'm still having problems after a GUI/USB based upgrade.
I have done a d2s on all sections of memory individually and this is the only one that fails miserably.
Anyone have any idea of how to restore this or at least clean it up somehow?
I never touched BigROM and my magician's internal storage is missing also.
I have tried hard resetting, and re-flashing it with the original 1.11.00.WWE.
But still no luck.
Any ideas guys?
I sure wish I knew how to fix this storage folder missing thing. I've reflashed the ROM at least 10 times with different nb1 files and all fail at 63% of load. Digging through all the memory locations for everything, this is approximately where the internal flash drive is. The OS always loads but nothing after that.
Load order of a flash:
Bootloader
OS
Storage Folder data
External ROM
Unused section
bootsplash
Device Version and type info
I can't believe an nb1 flash doesn't fix this problem though. Please post if you can find any more information.

Are you flashing using the USB and GUI method or using an SD card and bootloader?
I am not a pro.
I only ran the EXE I downloaded from O2 website.

I'm not a pro either. I've just been digging in to all of this over the last couple of weeks and made some determinations of how the upgrades actually happen and which does what.
I was just curious how you did the upgrade. Since you used the standard EXE for the install, that will only update the OS ROM, Extended ROM and Radio. The Storage folder isn't touched at all with this upgrade. The manufacturers purposely don't do anything with this area of memory because it contains user data.
It's not working for me (I actually think I have some bad memory in my unit) but from all that I've read, a ROM flash via the SD card may solve your storage folder problem. nb1 files contain the memory definitions for the storage folder. I've seen other posts about this and this has fixed the problem for them. When I attempt an SD flash, the download stops at 63% every single time. If you can do an SD flash and it downloads to 100%, your problem may go away.
Just an idea......
Thanks for the advice.
Yes, my internal storage was intack after the upgrade for nearly
a month. But it disappeared one morning.
You may be right, something in ROM or Flash might be broken. :?
What is an SD flash? How do you invoke?
Is your Magician operable at all now that
your flash is incomplete.
Is the nb1 part of the EXE ROM update?

Lots of questions....let's see.....
An SD flash is a bit tricky but not too tough once you understand the instructions (attached).
Essentially, you need to get a few programs but they can be had off the ftp site.
Basic steps:
dump ROM that's already installed to an SD card (save this thing somewhere very safe)
copy the first 416 bytes and paste in to new rom that can be downloaded from the ftp site as well.
write the rom back to sd card
flash with new rom
done
The nb1 file is what is created when you do a flash backup of your current rom.
All this sounds a little complex but if you follow the instructions step for step, you'll be fine.
This method rewrites the entire ROM including the storage area so it might fix your problem.
Yes, my unit is still operable at this point but I still have the missing folder problem. My flash ALWAYS stops at 63% and won't go any further so I can't get the storage area, Ext_ROM and Radio to upgrade via this method.
None of this will overwrite the bootloader so you can't really screw anything up even if the flashes fail. If you try all this and run in to the same problem that I ahve, you can always just go back and run the executable again and you'll be back to where you were. I suspect this will probably work for you though.

Stupid Question (Restore ROM)

I know I am asking a stupid question... I am new in PocketPC, I've been search 10 pages in this forum.. But no one match..... could anyone tell me "How can I restore my ROM on my O2 mini!?"
I used romupdate.exe and ntrw.exe to backup the ROM to SD and write and SD image to my HDD..........
Thx again if anyone could help me!~
I tried writing the saved rom back "ntrw write oldrom.nb1 X:" ( where oldrom.nb1 is the backed up rom and X is the Card reader drive) , I figured it would be the same procedure as writing the new big storage rom I wanted to do this as a test before upgrading to the big storage . . . Just to make sure incase i wanted to re-flash it back to original . I used a mmc card of 128 mb to do this. all worked fine , copying the original rom, then saving it to pc then writing it back to the mmc card using the above mentioned command in ntrw. The thing is that after writing the oldrom (original rom) back to mmc card , when i check the space used on the card it shows it as empty and i don't get the "push power button to flash" option either . Then i figured ok if this doesn't work then i'll just download the orginal rom (shipped rom) from the xda developers ftp , but after seeing all the shipped rom versions that are available there i couldn't figure out which was the actual ver of the rom + extended rom that i need for my mini (to many 112 rom versions available for me to figure out which one was the exact same as mine) . Here is my current rom ver and Extended rom - ROM VER 1.12.00 WWE , Rom Date 05/28/05 , Radio Version 1.12.00 , Protocol Version ( no idea wtf it means but here it is ) 1337.42 and Extended Rom Version 1.112.920 . . . I can't seem to find anything similar to this on ftp .
So can any of the Tech Experts here take a few minutes of their precious time to help us noobs to atleast try out the big storage ?
Reading yr long paragraph w/o any seperation is kinda dizzy...

How do U check space? If U read the instruction carefully, the data written to the SD/MMC is not in the format of FAT16/FAT32/NTFS and therefore U should not able to check the size. In fact, Windows will says it's unformat and ask if U want to format it. So, check yr command for ntrw to see if U really write the rom back to SD

Make sure U wait at least 1 min. Also, left the MMC in the magician, do a soft-reset and wait

There's no need to be exact match in order to flash as long as U use MaUpgradeUt.exe to flash. All of them should work fine.
Good luck

The easiest way is to download the O2 ROM upgrade from here ftp://xda:[email protected]/Magician/Shipped_ROMS/o2asia_11100_922_11100_ship.exe and install. This will restore your O2 to factory including your extended ROM
I had the same scenario
That's right. i upgraded my imate jam to ROM 1.13 extrom 1.13 and radio 1.13, then followed the instruction of how to do the bigstorage. so i dumped my rom to my SD card then modified it using mksBigStorager tool the size changed from 122 mb to 65 mb only. anyways i dumped it back to my SD card. but the SD card is still readable by my imate when it's not by windows. and when i try to go to the Bootloader mode it doesn't show the message that asks to press the power button.
still wokring on it...
Thanx alot for your help guys , unfortunately i still can't get the flash option . . . still working on it to
Updated : - Ok , I Finally found a solution to the press power to flash problem i was having . The thing is not to Format SD/MMC card after reading rom to PC (ntrw read myrom.nb1), read the rom to PC using the usual ntrw command , modify your big storage rom , then write the modified big storage Rom from your PC to SD/MMC card using the known method (ntrw write myrom.nb1) . . . Do Not Format The Card Before you write the modified rom . . . Just write over the old existing image on the card , goto boot loader as usual then you'll get the press power to flash right away. Hope this helps

Upgrade from Flash Card

Hi,
This is my first post and I would be most grateful for a little advice. I have a XDA Exec that suffered a broken USB socket, since I replaced this, I cannot connect to Activesync, just shows as unknown device. Question is, is there a WM6 rom upgrade with voip that can be done from the flash card, or is this a stupid question and USB the only way. Any info would be very welcome.
Thank you

it is possible but you need access to another universal
1) Flash the ROM you want on the other universal (unless it is already on there)
2) Using Mtty, as Described in the HTC Universal Service Manual, Backup the CE section of the ROM of this device to a freshly formatted SD card (I use a 256mb card, experiment for others)
3) Put your Universal into bootloader mode and then insert the SD card conatining the backup image.
4) Follow the on-sreen instructions to flash it to your device
5) Hard Reset
Thats good advice, I will try and borrow another one, much appreciated.

Hi,
I'm also looking for a back-up image too! Can you make one of the latest WM6.1 version ROM? Like this version: [UPDATE: Ranju's - v7.1] WM6.1 Pro - 5.2.19188 (Build 19188.1.0.0)
Thanks!
Flash from SD without 2nd device
Technically it's actually feasible to flash the ROM from storage card WITHOUT having 2nd device or backup image.
I'm sure it should work the way I'm thinking but it has to be tested before end-user flashing. I may write a how-to if I have some time......some day.
Cheers

I've uploaded everything from the device to an SD card now and it should work, as I get the screen telling me to press power to flash.
Unfortunately the card is not formatted in a "proper way", meaning the Uni and windows both see it as unformatted.
Is there a solution to make a sector based copy of the card, so I could provide its content for those people with broken USB connectors?
i would also be very interested in this. i dropped my uni a few months back with the cable plugged in and it smashed the usb port on the uni. would like to flash new rom to it via sd. unfortunately, in australia, this device is very rare. i have never met any1 else with one, so getting one is impossible.
if there is any other way to do this, i would greatly appreciate it.

The best and perhaps the safest way to flash

Dear Users
After a tragic experience with flashing my Polaris using activesync connection and a power failiure in the process which caused me a lot of trouble and a defective USB on the device it self. I have decided to share the best way to flash with all other novice users like myself. The procedure can even HardSPL provided you have the relevant nbh file.
In my humble opinion one should not use activesync /computer to flash for many reasons.
This procedure is very simple.
1. Take a MicroSD or SD card appropriate for your device and format it.
2. Put the ROM file you want to flash on the root of the SD and rename it POLAIMG.nbh
3. Put this card into your device and press camera + power+ hard reset (hidden button) and let go the hard reset, the device will go into bootloader and automaticlly start flashing the rom image.
Thats it you are done and no problems getting stuck into bootloader or problems related to activesync and different OS versions.
I have even flashed my old HTC Atom using same technique only the file name there is not PLOAIMG
Enjoy, Respects to all the chefs and other developers
T_Malik
great but isn't it
POLAIMG.nbh
Just some may how to say get stuck on the wrong name
Absolutely right POLAIMG.nbh

I think it only works with non-SDHC cards. I tried with my 16 GB card and it didn't read the .nbh
I have tried 3 different MicroSD cards and it seems that its the best if the card be a 256 MB in size and only containing the required POLAIMG.nbh file in root.
On the ATOM model the card was a standard SD card 1GB in size and it worked fine as well.
Respects and regards

Okay. You will need a 256MB or less SD card.
Format it to FAT32.
Place one of my SD version ROMs (one my HERAIMG.nbh files) onto the SD card with nothing else on it.
Boot phone to bootloader.
Use the volumeslider down to select that you want to flash the ROM when you see in the lower left hand corner red numbers counting from 10 to 1.
Wait..
Wait some more..
Press volumeslider down again when it says successful.
SD CARD HAS TO BE LESS THAN 256MB OR LESS

Any post that has [ROM] in front of it and has my name underneath it is called a ROM Suite. I have about 4 downloads in each Suite.
Two for Herald users and two for Wing users.
And for each user I have an SD version (the HERAIMG.nbh) and an RUU (RomUpdateUtility version).
Now to flash one of my ROMs you need to be HARDSPL'd. Which means that your IPL and SPL need to be greater than 4.xx.xx.xx.
You originally stated that your "IPL is 4.14.0002" & your "SPL is 4.10.0000." So you should be all set to flash my ROMs.. If you're not sure, then on any one of my ROM Suite threads get the HARDSPL folder and follow the directions that are in the folder.
thnks very much, but i cant install those three files into device as the set is stuck at showing IPL and SPL. i downloaded HARDSPL folder to my desktop. pliz help as to how i do it. when i use rom utility says invalid vendor and when i use memory card it says security not cleared, when i change .nbh on mmc says checking sd contents then back to three colors IPL and SPL
Have you tried flashing an original ROM to your device?
