Talking numbers,or, Missing the obvious voice-control? - General Topics

So, Had my Qtek S200 for just a bit more than a week now, and getting to set up the details. And now I'm trying to figure out some obvious voice-dialing tricks that should be present on a device like this. But obviously is not there or well hidden.
I want a voice-number mode. Like I press the headset button and say: "Dial" and then just say one number at a time, possibly even with short-names for area-codes, and of course a "Wrong" or "Back" if a number gets misinterpreted.
I havn't installed the voice-command software that I can install for free, but that's just because outside dialing numbers I don't really need any more voice-control. And to install all of that just to get this little function (if it's at all there) seems a bit over the top.
I also find it strange that I cannot have a common word for "Home", "Work" and "Mobile". What I mean with that is that Saying a name should open that contact, and then just say which type of number should be dialed. That would obviously save space for more controls and thus less misses in the control. But that is a seriously minor point to the obvious number-dialing.

Hi SDplus!
While I and other people may agree with you, Microsoft unfortunately doesn't. I have the same device with imate ROM (Jamin) and it comes with "Cyberon voice dial" in the ext ROM. That is actually a reduced version of the voice commander that only handles prerecorded voice tags.
Bummer, but no choice there. At leas the manufacturers are trying to add the 3rd party software like cyberon to the ROM so you don't have to pay for it.
Also I had to give up my camera button to assign the app to it. It's a nice device but the extra 'OK' button could be put to a much better use by default.

MS VoiceCommand and Voice Dialer Software Experience

I have spent some time looking at various shareware and commercial voice dialer apps this week.
I was really impressed with the specification of MS VoiceCommand No training required, context dependent actions (ie you say "Call So and So" and it will dial immediately if there is only one number, or will say "Mobile or Work?" if there is ambiguity, or you can just say"Call So and So at Work" and off it goes. Terrific.
Except it doesn't work on the XDA. Can't see why - it hears something (so "Show Calendar", "Help", "Yes" etc. work) but does not have enough mic sensitivity to do name recognition. This is so whether you hold the XDA 1 inch or 18 inches from your mouth, whether AGC is on or off.
So for a quarter of the cost I have bought NeuVoice Dialer, which works pretty well. Problems? Needs to be trained, no context dependency, so you either have to associate a specific number (Work, Mobile etc) with a voice tag, or you have to recognise the name first, the specific tag second, which means pressing the action button twice. Nause. Also not very easy in the car w/o a hands-free profile, which is what we are all after, isn't it?
So are my experiences unique? Would love to hear!
I'm using Voice Command with XDA II and it works great. How many processes are you running? I found that if you get close to the 32 process max then it doesnt work as well (see other posts in this forum about max processes). At 26 processes no problem.
Only two or three!! It is really strange - I can't see why it works so much worse than NeuVoice. Not noticed any particular probs with the phone either , so I don't think that the microphone itself is faulty, although it could be that.
How well is VOice Command working really? How many contacts do you have and does it really discrimate? I have about 500 contacts+.
Cheers
Stephen,
I doubt you only have 2 or 3 processes running, you mean applications visible through the memory option in settings. You need a third party tool like Taskmanager (available on Handango) to see the processes running (a bit like the Windows taskmanager) I have 500+ contacts and Voice Command really does a great job of discriminating between them. Try the stereo headset that comes in the box to rule out any microsphone issues. Also I run Voice Command with default settings, I didnt mess with the AGC Microsphone settings at all.
Out of the programs I tried for VoiceDialing, I found Fonix VoiceDial was the most accurate (using XDA 1)
Tried with the stereo lead - very, very slightly better, but no way is this stuff usable.
I'm pretty sure there is an architecture issue here - the fact that the AGC cannot be manually set, strange behaviour using teh recorder during phone calls etc. VoiceCommand may be great, but it don't work too well on my XDA2. Maybe I have a funny voice!!!
Cheers
XDAII - MS Voice Command experience
I am using MS VC with i-MATE for already several months and I have over 700 contacts...
Based on my experience - try to reinstall MS Voice Command - some times it works better.... Also do not speak to loud; do not keep it very close to your mouth. It works fine even if it is on a console between sits and I am driving (looking straight on the road).
And yes, you should check number of process running... http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/ppc_cn_overview.html - would be the best bet...
Good luck.

Don't forget, you need to speak with an American accent it you want this thing understand you...!
Yes, that has improved it - 135 notifications.
Not sure how to check active processes - got any suggestions on utilities?
I can now get recognition about 60-70% of the time. Sadly it still has problems with my "Yes"!! Maybe I should coach my voice to sound more patient :?
Thanks for the advice ...
How do you BUY VoiceCommand?? Won;t accept non-US addresses!!!!
As far as I know you can get trial for one or several days.
As per "buy it" I am not sure how you can do that not from states or Canada.
About YES - possibility that you just saying it too soon. Try pause for 1,5 2 seconds and after repeat if necessary.
Thanks - I've discovered Handandgo/uk so I'm all set now.
Cheers everyone!
Hate to say this but I tried Voice Command and gave up!
Sometimes it got it right, but for most of the time it got it wrong. I think I had better results when I tried an American Accent with a Scouse Accent (Livererpudlian for our international fans), but even then it was a burger less than a MacDonalds.
I seemed to think it was down to the XDA II only having AGC on and off choices and not a manual audio gain setting. I did try it with both the free version and the *cough* cracked version (for evaluation purposes of course) to little success. Saying that, didn't have much success with Via Voice either.
Anybody willing to "share" this software.... long term.. hehehehe
e-mail me at [email protected]
fella's please persit with and you will be rewarded with porbably the best voice recognition program available....
i nearly gave up but i'am glad i did'nt
It helped me going to the website and reading the help files and watching the demostration video...

MS Voice Command and Fonix
G'day Guys,
I've persisted with MS Voice Command and agree with the previous posts.. If you've got your alerts sorted out and processes running low, it's a REALLY good package...
The Fonix VoiceDial and Voice Commander has excellent potential but I couldn't get the accuracy up and the volume was lousy - Crackly and distorted.. So I'm sticking with MS VC...
Still can't get "DIAL 1 2 3 4" etc. working AT ALL.. It's ALWAYS wrong?!?! But "Call CONTACT NAME" is consistently excellent.. So that's all I need it for!
Beats the heck out of having accidents on the road while trying to stylus the iMate!!!!
P.S. For the SmartPhone, Fonix VoiceDial is absolutely brilliant - I've also used that and it's consistently good.. Just a shame that there seems to be an issue with the iMate PDA (O2 XDA II) hardware and Fonix VoiceDial...
Cheers
Andy
Voice Command in Oz
Andy,
How did you get VC in Oz?. I have used the trial version and found it great (after learning to americanise my "strine"), but non US addresses just can't download. I am happy to pay for my programs, but if MS don't want my money...

usa purchase
Its very simple if you are only purchasing a software download - Give your real email address but gìve any usa mail address that you can see on packaging or from the web and the sale will go through! important the ZIP Code must be real
Neuvoice for XDA II
Thanks for that Sam. In the meantime, I have tried Neuvoice, and have actually found it is a better product. Apart from the need to train it, the recognition is better and I don't have to alter my accent

Suggestions to improve the tornado WM6 roms

I think that, after has proved two roms that there is in this moment, many of us have valuable contributions that made to help to perfect the final score. I have seen many very positive dispersed suggestions for the different threads that treat the topic.
I think that it is better to open a thread exclusively for suggestions and only suggestions (although they could accompany oneself of a comment) of progress, which is plain and practical for the consultation of the creators of roms.
Also I think that if some suggestion is debatable, we could debate on it and even to vote if we weigh that it must be included or not.
Clearly, they will take their own decisions according to what here they see and of their own perceptions; but it is sure that we serve them as help.
I begin with my own suggestions:
Only for that of Phil:
- To include the STK services to be able to use dual sim.
For both:
- To support most of free possible memory, by means of:
*To install only a source for defect and to be able to have others by means of cabs
*To include neither Windows Live nor the Office, not even Voice Command for defect. To add them in cabs.
- If someone manages to make to work this, to include in the rom (WLAN IP Manager) since it would solve the one that for me is the worst defect of Tornados: the inability to get connected with fixed IPs.
Thanks
PD: I have seen many different, as one on a driver for the joystick, someone on the starter, others on the multimedia player, etc., that also would like to see me implemented, but I hope that there should be the first ones in contributing them who posteen here, so they will be able to make it much better than I.
Excuse us, to me for my horrible English and to Google for his horrifying Spanish.
You are contradicting with yourself. You are saying that they must leave as much free memory as possible and then you are asking for a feature only a few of us will ever use.
I believe the roms must be left as clean as possible. A couple of things such as HTC tasks, file manager, comm manager etc. may be default. But other than that anything can be left out. This way we guarantee that everybody has his own OS style (like linux, unlike windows).
Right now I am using Phil's rom and it is quite stable and fast and I am very satisfied. There are some debug related applications in it which will probably be removed in the next release. And the rest, for me, just works like a charm.

Which? If you talk about STK services, to where I understand I believe that it is an own service of the phone that does not consume resources that only become “visible” when there are several options of to switch on. I do not believe that that is to request a new characteristic, but to correct an error. If you talk about WLAN IP Manager, the same. It does not do more than small adjustments in the registry to correct a tremendous error of the Tornado.
I do not see that it requests nothing else, but good, if some of the things comes aside in cab installable, because better.
It seemed to me very interesting something of a magnificent one to driver for joistick, but no longer I know nor by where it walks.
In order to themselves separate the possible discussions of the suggestions, I believe that it is going to be better to put in negrilla these last ones. In case the creators of roms want to review the thread of a look it will be more easy.
i did have a small list of improvements made some time ago:
ok phil.
if u remove windows update, at least supply it as a cab in the extras folder.
channels don't work.
long pressed side button does not work! it used to start voice note record for the sda and i'd like that to work.
mms.
better camera software. btw htc camera makes the phone SLOW..... not a good one. need an alternate
enable profile switching to silent when long pressing '#' key
default folder for saving pictures on storage card is not my documents\my pictures any more but a lame dcim folder. that would be nice to be changed.
also, sometimes when answering a call, the keyboard stays locked, the call is still on, but the home screen is active and not the call screen.
joystick seems much better but sometimes it doesn't want to work as it should. maybe another driver; if not, this one is good
we need wpa2 for wifi enabled.
also add in the extras folder:
moblue
tcpmp with extra codecs
htc audio manager could be good
if u need the cabs for moblue and htc audio, i have them
there is an newer version of sim manager. v6.10. has a couple of new things (got it if u need it)
and maybe add a good version of opera. not the java one.
we also need a good midlet manager
also a good instant messaging program. maybe a multi client one like oz mobile im, or like im+

Very worked, correct an useful list. I am in agreement with almost everything.
I believe everybody wants is a small, fast and clean ROM, with the latest and more reliable drivers.
Imho, any application that is not mandatory, OR if could be installed in SD should be packed together with the ROM in a ZIP file, so everyone could choose which extra features to install.
Since the extra features installation take some (lot of) time reset or first installation. - It would be Great if someone could manage to create a package installer, where the user may choose what "extras" to install.

Excellent idea. Save lots of time. (Excuse me for I put it in "bold")
Headset profile is missing
I would also add Autokeylock and Right Menu in ROM. They seem to me two essential littel applications.
right menu is not free.
i don't think it's a good idea to include all those 3d party, just the esential stuff (as mms, camera, etc).

Ohhh. It's correct. Excuse me. I thought that it was free. It's mine for a long time.
I agree totally in the rest, but… for me Autokeylock isa essential stuff.
Just give us a basic version, do not include things which can be installed in storage card to maximize the available space
Well said, I agree.
oh yeah... i did forget one bug for my list:
the wm6 t9 does not work right. it seems it has been borrowed from a chinese rom or something because when you switch between typing modes with the * key, it displays some chineese characters.
To break the Modaco xT9 language pack so only the necessary language can be installed .
Very important. About 2.5 Mg will be saved. I know It by experience

Ditto. Good idea!

need help with my fuze experience - by an ex Blackberry user (long)

Hi Guys,
First thank you all for such a great community. XDA truly "sold" me the HTC fuze...as I was very excited about such an excellent user base. I lurked here for a few days before I bought, and have lurked a few more days while I have played with the phone, so far with very positive experiences...
So here is my question...
I am an ex blackberry user...4 years running. Had the 7290 and the more recent 8800. I liked the phones but were frequently frustrated by things such as lack of home-brew software (or at least lack of software easy to find and well supported), lack of a decent web browser, lack of an attractive UI (albeit theirs was very functional) and lack of 3G (on att at the moment). Now I know that the BB Bold fixed some of this, but to me its the same ole blackberry tricks (do email real well, slack off on the rest), and I was really ready for a highly extensible smart phone.
Enter the HTC fuze...
I love the apps, love the idea of custom ROMS, love that it runs a very common platform (windows mobile, important as some companies write apps that only run on windows mobile), and love the sheer power of the HTC fuze (can easily browse filesystem, look at memory usage...its essentially a very small laptop), but I have one primary complaint...it does all these cool things, but IMO it does NOT do email/messaging/contact management well...and worse, I have not been as impressed with the web browser as I thought I would be (using opera, have not tried IE...also some of this is my fault, I am trying to use fat-client web pages vs mobile web pages, which are faster and just perform better). Now before I get flamed, let me clarify that I am using the Energy Rom 3.0, so some of my griefing may be self inflicted. That being said, here are some specifics of what irritations Ive ran into with messaging/email/contact management...ill list them out categorized in order of importance (can you tell I am an engineer?)
Email
1. No heads up display of new messages on the home screen (have to poke around to the email area to see if you have new messages)
2. Does not enter an @ and . symbol when hitting spacebar key while typing email address in "To:" field (ex-blackberry users will sympathize)
3. I get too many emails for the graphical envelope to be useful...it looks cool, but when I am 30 emails deep i really don't want to have to click menu to get to all messages, just let the mail icon take me right to the goodies please...
4. read/unread/replied messages are not well represented (could be that it is just different that the blackberry feel, but a different color or something would be nice...the standard is bold/yellow/dark is unread and light/white/shadowy is read...and replied as some sort of representation as well
There are a few others but those are the main ones
Messaging
1. Clicking the message, and then immediately beginning to type (as in to reply) will take you to the address book!!, in order to start a new message! It is beyond me why it does not just start entering text as a reply for your current message you are viewing, and this is a huge annoyance!
2. Found this the other day...replying to an MMS message by clicking gives an error (wont deliver) but hitting menu and then reply will then prompt for "MMS or SMS reply?" and the message goes through fine...irritating!
3. Tapping spacebar twice does not place a period, although not capitalizing the first letter in a sentence auto-capitalizes - this is a blackberry feature that is not here and i miss it :'(
4. Once again lack of proper heads up in the home menu....why is the clock giant??? Looks cool but waste of space...I would rather have a breakdown of my messages/emails/missed calls with limited details so I can see whats going on, on my home screen.
5. General slowness when going from the message browsing with the envelopes to the reply, detailed view.
Contact Management
1. Adding a contact is no where near simple...and there are too many "mines" you can accidentally click in the process which will do odd things like add an address book entry with no name in it, or call someone!
2. The "people" tab is useless...i removed it (not really a complaint as I fixed it...but I just don't understand that concept of favorites....that being said my background is in database administration so all data is good data to me, the more the merrier...explains my 500+ contacts, half of which i prob dont need but keep around just in case)
3. Last name first???? Blackberry was always first name last...further more, I entered a business the other day in my contact list, and it put the second part of the business name as the last name, leading to a very odd address book entry...I did not like that bit of assumption on the phones part.
So I guess you could probably sum up all my complaints into 3 things:
1. I am way too used to blackberry shortcuts and having a hard time weening myself off
2. There are 10 ways to do the same things and get to the same places on the phone, and some times a few of those ways are less buggy/intuitive than others...why not just have the best methods enabled only?
3. Too many buttons take you places you did not intend to be...its not one way in one way out of each module (mail, messaging, ect.)...its 5 ways in, 10 ways deeper, uh....im lost, how do I make a phone call? (I'm being facetious of course but you get my drift)
Anyways, I am not trying to slam the phone, it is slick, sexy, and free (refurb through an ATT deal), but I just need some ROM/tweak/psychological suggestions to make it "fit" me better.
Thank you all truly,
Crackberry addict in serious withdrawal
Ok, so piece by piece:
Email:
1. For a pop-up for new email messages, go to start>settings>sounds&notifications>notifications. There you can choose messaging: new email message, and select display message on screen. This will give you a pop up at the bottom every time you get a new email. you can do this for all those other events that are in the drop down too.
2. Don't know of anything to do this
3. There should be a inbox button for your i think left soft-key. Two clicks isn't much more than 1
4. Don't know of anything
Messaging:
1. This happens jut because of lag in the system. You have to wait until everything loads up to start typing. Sounds like you need a cooked rom
2. Bug?
3. My phone does what you ask, although I am running 6.5. My settings in input have "enable auto correct" with a check mark next to them. Don't know if this solves the problem in 6.1
4. Regular Today screen. Try something like TouchFlo Detacher, which allows you with the soft key button to easily and quickly switch back and forth between the regular today screen, which would have all that info that you desire, and touchflo. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=480475
5. Cooked rom, bigger pagepool
Contact Management:
1. Sorry this is just winmo. Contact entry area is not exactly the most finger friendly menu. Try the stylus. I know what you mean, though.
2. Basically the people tab is just for people you call on a daily basis, and it looks cool lol
3. You can change that in the contact's settings where it says "file as"; I like first name first also, so I just changed it so that was the way it is displayed.
Overall Points:
1. It is difficult to go from blackberry to winmo, but everything does have a slight learning curve.
2. Most view this to be the beauty of winmo. You have infinite possibilities, since everyone likes to do things differently. If microsoft wanted to assume that everyone wanted to do everything the same way and that there was one, best, all-powerful way to do things, then they could just merge with apple
3. Lol don't understand this one
Any more questions, I'd be happy to help
thanks
hey,
thanks for the detailed reply. got most of the answers i needed...I am using a cooked rom (energy 3.0) which runs WM 6.5, but it comes with the Manila skin. After doing some research I think I need to ditch that and start from there...any other pointers?
You could try to use the default WM6.5 home plugin instead of TF3D, it may suit your needs better.

WM 6.1 Treo800w mute microphone

Greetings,
For reasons similar to an earlier poster, I'd like to find a way to map a button to mute/unmute the mic during a cell call.
A small application was posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=386810 which does this.
However it does not work on the Treo800w (as well as a few others) due to the fact that it looks for text on the button, which isn't there in this model.
In any event, after exhaustive searching - their doesn't appear to be any ready-made solution for this. I'm willing to write my own, but it's not even clear to me from the msdn api docs that it's even possible to directly manipulate this? Is this type of control "protected" from the Windows portion of the phone?
The idea would be to write a tiny app to toggle it and then map it to aebutton or something similar.
This is pretty much exactly what "itsallwright" did, and I'd like it for the same reasons - it's just his approach doesn't work on the Treo800w.
Thoughts?

Any other options to change from keyboard to keypad?

After discovering a lot of great features on my rooted E900, a new question made me using search function, but with not much help! So: is there any tweak in registry to change keyboard from full querty to keypad (like the physical keyboard from old phones, 1 to 9 with * and # and pressing three times on two for ex to write C letter) when you write a text message or text a web adress? I find this more handy when I'm driving, because with all that small letters from full querty is more dificult. Thanks in advance, and hope there is a solution, because when you write a number in the sms recipient, that keyboard appears.
I'm trying to think of a polite way to say this, and the best I've come up with is that, while I don't care terribly much about *your* car, I'm sufficiently concerned about the random people around you that the thought of making it easier to use your phone while driving is not even slightly appealing (for the record, it's illegal here, and for good reason).
For the record, I'm not so irresponsible so that I'm texting sms and driving, especially since I have a small baby in the backseat. When I PULL OVER and try to text something, the sunlight makes it harder to see the small buttons and I always hit the wrong button. I have pretty big fingers and that's why I want to use such a keypad.
And no offence, but I will never come to Seatle, only if I will win lottery and want to meet you personally, so don't be concerned.
The question still stays. Thank you
Please... Can someone help me with keypad?
