RADIO 1.13 upgrade successfull! Works better. - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Hey all. I'm new to the forums but have always come back here to look for technical advice on my first and only Phone PPC.
For two hours the other night I was looking for information on how to find and install radio 1.13. I finally found the files but didn't know how to install them correctly.
First, the maupdateut files found on the ftp site did not install at first. It kept giving me the "MODEL ID ERROR" message.
Second, after reading instructions on downloading the maupdateut_noid file, it finally worked.
The testimonials most of you have read about this upgrade are true. It works. I've been using the new radio for the past 2 days and the JAM performs remarkably better in all respects.
1) Bluetooth doesn't sound choppy anymore. A much stronger signal is available for sure.
2) Reception doesn't sound fluttery as it did in 1.12. There is still a little sign of degredation in the signal as i'm driving but I haven't been asking people to repeat things 3-4 times anymore. In fact, I haven't had people repeat anything yet. MUCH better, and less stressful for both parties!
3) On a route I take everyday, i use to drop signal at least 3 times. Now, I drop only once (or not at all in most cases) in a certain bad area.
PHONE DETAILS: US I-mate JAM 850mhz. ROM 1.12 with RADIO 1.13 upgade:
Instructions:
1) Download Radio 1.13 upgrade (not SD version) from ftp under Magician/Radio folder
2) Download the MAupdateUT_noid file from the ftp under Magician/Tools folder.
Try just installing the Radio folder first. If you get a MODEL_ID ERROR try this next.
1.Drag/Drop the MAupdateUT_noid file into the Radio 1.13 folder.
2.rename ONLY the HTCRUU.dll file to RUU.dll
3. then install by double clicking the NOID file.
This should complete in less than 10 minutes.
Try it and you won't be disappointed.
Also...I haven't had any problems with shortened battery life either, even with blutooth headset activated.
Thanks all!

hard reset?
Hi,
Does the procedure above require a hard reset? Do I need to install all my programs again after that?
Also, just out of curiosity, why do I need to rename the HTCRUU.dll file to RUU.dll? If I don't rename it it won't work, right?
10x in advance,
Deyan

Thanks

does it work for O2 XDA Mini????
If it does, i would like to give it a try...been going after this thread for months to get the solution but no go....
Anyone can help how to update the radio without 'Model ID Error'?
I have upgraded mine to NL_11300_131_11200, but I cannot upgrade the radio as rilazi encountered.
If you have a problem with the ID error, use the attached file instead of MaUpgradeUt. The one you need to use is MaUpgradeUt_NoId, not the one included in the original zip file.
I'm afraid that the MaUpgradeUt_NoId only works for the OS-upgrade, not for the Radio-upgrade (or is it just me?)...
I get this message: MaUpgradeUt_NoId.exe: This application has failed to start because RUU.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
I also tried adding
[CHECKCEID_TYPE]=1
to the HTCRUU.conf file (like we do in the RUU.conf file during a OS-upgrade) but with no success.
Any suggestions?
It worked for me after I upgraded to T-Mob 1.13 ROM. Don't know why it's not working on yours. Did you download the Radio from ftp?

I have same problems.
Here is the way step by step:
1. Dawnload previous MaUpgradeUt_noID in this page
2. Dawnload MagicianRadio_1.13.00_maupgrade from ftp
3. Unzip MagicianRadio_1.13.00_maupgrade and paste there MaUpgradeUt_noID
4. When you unzip MagicianRadio_1.13.00_maupgrade you will get several files including HTCRUU.dll and rename this file to only RUU.dll
5. Run MaUpgradeUt_noID first and you will get Model ID error
6. Run for the second time you will Update Radio

It didn't work for me... The second time I run MaUpgradeUt_noID, I get the screen saying the update will take +/- 20 minutes with the progress bar, but ... no progress. The Magician indicates that the radio ugrade is in progress, but after a while I get a message on my PC saying that an error has occured, and I should try again...

NM8Magician

Good day
I have a 10 day old imate new jam (NM8 Magician). I want to upgrade just my Radio version to 1.13 (hoping to rectify my problem)due to a crap gsm signals as this is a replacement to a same model which i thought was faulty, but when i got the replacement, im stuck with the same problems ( poor gsm signal and crap camera). As i search the Magician forums, the more i read, the more i get confused. I have been to the wiki side of the forum as well as the main forums.
Can someone please enlighten me, or just put me in the right direction where to download Radio version 1.13, and some instructions.
Details of my imate jam are:
PM10A
Rom Version 1.12.00WWE
Rom Date May 28, 2005
Radio Version 1.12.10
Protocol Version 1337.42
ExtRom Version 1.12.171WWE
Thank you very much!!!!
The story to upgrade to radio 1.13 can be found in this thread: 'Upg to 1.13 WWE ROM (with 1.13 Radio) in 10 easy steps!' @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...&start=0&sid=75c5e40168a22052fb7c5554bddd68c2

nm8,
You can try my much easier post, I have pasted a few previous posts to save time so it might not flow. Go to this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27537&highlight=
to get the MaUpgradeUt_noID.exe file you will need and follow my instructions. It really is not to hard. I hed never done any of this before so if I could do it any one can.
Make sure when you view that link you are logged on or you will not see the download for the MaUpgradeUt.exe file. Once you have downloaded, winrar the iMate rom to open or seperate the files, there should be 7 or 8 files. You will see the MaUpgradeUt.exe file that comes with the iMate rom in those 7 or 8 files. Delete that MaUpgradeUt.exe file and replace it with the MaUpgradeUt.exe you downloaded from the link. Now click on the MaUpgradeUt.exe rom, it will do its thing. It may still give you wrong country code, dont sweat it, just re click on the MaUpgradeUt.exe file and start again. It will only give you wrong country code once, maybe twice but keep re starting, it will work. Enjoy
Ps because this was for a previous post remember to replace any instructions of "imate rom" with Radio13
hi
thanks to both of you for the quick reply. i have downloaded the files.
now before i begin, when i unzipped MagicianRadio_1[1].13.00_maupgrade, there is a file named "HTCRUU.dll". some threads say i nedd to rename it to "RUU.dll" only, secondly, when i connect my jam to pc, doi have to untick USB?
thank you once again
No need to untick usb, the upgrade needs the usb connection to check the country id & it will put your device in bootloader with the transfer to & execution of the file enterbl.exe on your magician.
don't know about the ruu dll. when you got enough Bandwith download a Complete shipped rom from the ftp & extract all the files from it, or view them with winzip to see the correct file name.
cheers, M
hi oltp,
yes i had to rename HTCRUU.dll to RUU.dll, the upgrade process didnt run before i renamed it.
evrything is fine now.... ill be testing hte fone and posting any difference it made to my gsm reception in due time.
cheers
thought of updating this post for the sake of other newbies like me looking for answers. i have not encountered any problems so far after updating to radio 1.13...
thanks to imapfsr and oltp for their lightning fast replies to my questions, a million times better than clubimate support!

Storage Problems for a non developer

Hi
I know there are lots of people asking how to save space and mostly they get told to use 'search' and check the stickys.
I'm a keen gadget lover but have no technical background. I have a 64mb Tmobile MDA (with the horrible branding) and the following setup:
R 1.00.10
G 1337.36
D 1.01.00 WWE
I've heard/seen references to big storage etc but I don't really understand it.
Can someone either give me:
- a really simple way to update my rom etc, or
- suggest another way to delete stuff that I won't need (don't want to delete stuff only to find half the programs no longer work)
- explain the easiest way to get rid of all the Tmobile stuff
Many thanks in advance
To prevent the Branding stuff from loadibg you must hard-reset your magician (backup first!!) and after the initialization (calibration etc) you must soft-reset just before the customization starts. You got about 3 to 5 seconds to press the softreset, so when your screen reads 'tap screen to start using ....' you put the stylus in soft-reset hole & then tap the screen. As soon as the default blue WM background appears you press the stylus to soft-reset.
Now you got a plain WM2003 device. & you got the ext-rom visible, not editable, so you can explore it & choose what to install. Network settings for gprs is set by one of the ext-rom cabs.
To gain more storage you can move camera & album from \windows to storage folder. Remember to change shortcuts & registry as well. This saves ariund 1MB. More is possible: I've got < 8MB ram memory allocated to installed stuff with almost all ext-rom cabs installed. Yes I moved a lot.
To gain BIGstorage you can follow instructions below, but first you should get more familiar with the magician I guess. You can save your ext-rom cabs though & update to rom 1.13
url in instructions. To upgrade you just connect the magician to usb & start the downloaded shipped-rom & follow the instructions. Make a backup first & write down your gprs settings, caus you'll have dutch ext-rom cabs after the update. They're in English but contain dutch TMO settings.
Instruction for BS:
- Get nbfdec.exe from the thread 'Upg to 1.13 WWE ROM (with 1.13 Radio) in 10 easy steps!' @ http://forum.xda-developers.com/vie...&start=0&sid=75c5e40168a22052fb7c5554bddd68c2
- get maupgradeut_noid.exe from the ftp
- Download the shipped rom from:
http://www.t-mobile.nl/zakelijk/htdocs/page/service/mda_compact_upgrade.asp
- Download the Hexeditor from:
http://www.hhdsoftware.com/hexeditor.html
1. Unzip NL_11300_131_11200.exe (or any other shipped rom)
2. Put NBFDEC in the same directory as the unzipped shipped rom files
3. Copy the getdevicedata.exe to your Magician and execute to write DeviceData.txt
to \Windows and view with notepad
5. Decode nk.nbf -> nk.nb1:
nbfdec -d nk.nbf nk.nb1
6. Hexedit header to correct ID from DeviceData.txt
(probably only if using a rom from other provider)
7. Replace pattern for bigstorage in hexeditor:
locate the 02 00 00 80 00 20 and change 80 00 to b8 01 in the nk.nb1
(use binary search for this!!)
7. Encode nk.nb1->nk.nbf
nbfdec -e nk.nb1 nk.nbf
8. run maupgradeut_noid.exe to upgrade CE image
Also, this way you will save the contents of increased \Storage folder if previous rom was bigstorage one
Usage sample (must be run from the same folder as nbf files or specify full path):
nbfdec -d nk.nbf nk.nb1
nbfdec -e nk.nb1 nk.nbf
Regards, M
Many thanks OLTP for your reply....perhaps it's me but I still find that quite technical....when I have to rename stuff etc I'm not sure where it is to do it.
The tmobile branding piece is clear and I'll have a stab at that tonight though.
Perhaps I'm just destined to struggle with memory or buy a 128mb device.
Appreciate you taking the time though - anyone else want to have a pop at help a keen but useless gadget lover !
BS is unfortunately quite technical & this is the easiest way.
I suggest to remove the branding, that will save some storage. get more accustomed to your magician by exploring it without changing.
I can write you some steps for moving files to gain more ram.
maybe in the future you can think about BS again.
Cheers, M
pna: oltp's guide is about the best you'll ever get!
Basically, to debrand, do what he says in the first paragraph. This will remove all the additional TMobile gunk being installed. So, you need to hard reset (which will restore your system to "factory condition", and wipe everything), and then soft reset at the right time. Then you have a nice, fresh clean system. You can then read the board to see what files you might have skipped by achieving this, but frankly, you won't have missed much.
You can get your tmobile settings (for gprs etc) from here:
http://www.buymobilephones.net/sp3_setup.ihtml
FYI, before doing anything, get hold of a copy of GSFinder+ or a similar explorer. You will need it do any kind of installing/renaming etc.
Before venturing into the hardrest/soft reset business, consider if you want to do the big storage hack. Again, oltp's guide is perfect, but first the theory: the Extended Rom is like a small disk stuck inside your phone, carrying "backups" of the tmobile configuration stuff. If you do Bigstorage, it'll free that space for your use, giving you an extra 20mb or so to use for free. You can install stuff in there, and use it as a small, but bigger, disk to store stuff on. There's no reason not to do it, other than it's difficulty:
Difficulty? Yes, it takes some time, but instructions are provided, and clarified by oltp, so just follow the instructions carefully and you'll be fine.
It does require some knowledge, or confidence to learn.
So ideally, you want to:
1. Backup any files you want to keep.
2. Do Bigstorage.
3. Skip extended rom rubbish.
However, before you worry about bigstorage or anything technical, I suggest you just do this: clean up your system as it is now, and then just in future remember to install every program you want directly to your SD Card. If you do that, your system will generally have more than enough memory to run well. You can skip all the bigstorage and extended rom business. It's only necessary for those on a particularly tight memory budget. This should be fine for your needs I think.
FYI: to install onto your SD card, always choose NOT to use "main memory" when installing from your PC, or on the PDA, download and use a great program called cabinstl. That will allow you to install to your SD card.

oltp, do you mean I cant rename, move, or delete any of the files in extended rom? So its safe even if they show?
Yes,
The magician ext-rom is write-protected. You can't delete the files. Nor format the space. Try it if you like with the delete of the file which mentions the loadvdisk. It's completely harmless, but if you want to be sure copy all cabs first to sd & execute them from there.
Btw the loadvdisk cab, present in a TMO ext-rom, will delete the loadvdisk.lnk from \windows\startup & that's why the ext-rom is hidden.
Cheers, M

the thing is, i want to edit my own extended rom, so next time i do a hard reset, it wont install unnecessary junk like skype and other customisation. i also want to add programs to it so they autoinstall when i do a hard reset.
any advice?

Sure,
You can use bal666's tool to convert the ext-rom part of a romdump to a diskimage which you can mount under Windows XP, with appropriate software ofcourse.
Then you can do whatever you want with your ext-rom. Requires flashing of your magician & a hard-reset.
For starters I recommend to skip executing of the ext-rom by applying a soft-reset just before the custmization starts after a hard-reset. This way you won't cripple your device.
M
Many thanks OLTP & vjay555,
The branding thing worked a dream and saved me 6mb.
Now want to do big storage. Have got all the downloads ready but just need a bit more help on the 1-8 settings.
I'm really sorry that I need such basic help - haven't really got a clue what I'm doing but prepared to give it a go - please help.
1. No problem with this...even I can do this.
2. Where is this...I assume I move them to the Magician using explore (through activesynch) - am I right...if so, is there an obvious place that the unzipped shipped rom files will be.
3. Can't find a copy of getdevicedata.exe, Where do i find it, and then how do I execute to write DeviceData.txt
5. Afraid I don't know how to do this
6. Happy to give this a go if I get this far
7. How do I do this
8. Happy to give this a go if I get this far
Also, a little confused in the section after no 8 - what do I do here?
Hope you haven't lost patience with me. Hope to hear back soon.
Cheers
Paul,

This contains some more info than this thread. Pls read it & mail me the remaining questions, you've got my email-address. I'll add some extra help then.

One member wrote this (comes close to what's in the wiki)
I used jumpSPL1.56 KAIS und hardSPL 3.56 w/o problems to flash to ROMeOS.
BTW the neon and Niki Radio both work, don't forget to disable proxy since some HTC Connection setup CABs have it automatically enabled.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, the instructions for flashing your first ROM are pretty straightforward:
1. Flash HardSPL
a. The first thing to do is to pick a ROM you want to flash, and plug in your device to your computer.
b. The chef (person who makes the ROM) will usually say which SPL he/she recommends. If he doesn't, you can just PM him.
c. Go to this page and pick the HardSPL that the chef recommends. A HardSPL Security unlocks your phone, meaning that you can flash different ROMs than the default shipped ROMs.
d. Download the Kaiser-HardSPL-versionhere.zip from the above page and extract them to a folder on your computer, for example: HardSPL.
e. Now download the attached file in this post (JumpSPLv1) and extract it to a folder on your computer, for example: JumpSPL.
f. Once you have extracted the three files to a folder, open the folder, and copy "kaiser_JumpSPL_pof_v1.nb" and "JumpSPL.exe" (no quotes) to your device.
g. Power down your device, take out your SIM and SD card (if one), then power back on the device. If it opens an emergency call screen once restarting, just click the red End key button on your device to exit and go to the today screen.
h. Open File Explorer, then open JumpSPL.exe on your device, select the kaiser_JumpSPL_pof_v1.nb, then enter in: "0x00000000" no quotes.
i. Now, if done correctly, you should be at a Tri-color screen and it should say "USB".
j. Now disable USB connections in Activesync/Windows Mobile Device Center. To do this, click on settings under Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center (depending on if you're running Vista or XP) and UNcheck "Allow USB connections"
k. Unplug your device, wait 5-20 seconds, then plug your device back in.
l. Remember that folder that you extracted the SPL to? Well, on your computer, open that folder, then run KaiserCustomRUU.exe.
m. Click Next, Next, then Update. Wait for it to finish, then click Finish.
n. Congratulations! If done correctly, you should have HardSPL flashed on your device. To confirm this, press and hold the camera button on your device all the way while pushing the stylus into the reset hole. You should be at a tri-clor screen (called the bootloader). The second line down should say "SPL-versionhere.Hard" (no quotes). If it does, you're ready to flash! If it doesn't, please re-read all instructions.
2. Flash the ROM
a. Flashing the ROM is very easy. First, pick the ROM you like, and download it. Usually ROMs are in a .zip or .exe file.
b. Once the download is finished, extract the .zip to a folder on your computer. If it is an .exe, just run it.
c. If it was a .zip, just run KaiserCustomRUU.exe from the folder you extracted the files to, click Next, Next, then Update, then Finish. It it was an .exe that you downloaded, it should do this automatically. However, if it doesn't, it should just extract the files for you into a folder. Just follow the same procedure for a .zip file if it does do this.
d. Congratulations, you should have just flashed the ROM! If not, please re-read the instructions above.
3. Flash the Radio
a. This is where newcomers tend to become confused. Basically, you just need a radio that matches the ROM you have. One reason to tell if you do not have a correct radio is if you have camera issues, and sound issues while talking on the phone. Just remember: only flash Kaiser radios! If you try flashing a Polaris radio on your device, chances are you'll brick it.
b. You can flash the radio before or after you flash the ROM. Basically, the ROM and the Radio need to match. Chefs sometimes include Radios in their ROM, in which case you would not need to flash a new one. Just look in the thread of the ROM you want to flash to see if the chef included it. If there is an included radio, you can skip the rest of the steps. If the chef does not include a radio, he/she will usually recommend one.
c. You can download radios from here. Just download the one your chef recommends. If your chef does NOT recommend a radio, just PM him/her and ask which radio he/she recommends. Many people prefer 1.58.25.17 for its awesome battery life. 1.58.25.17 also works on many newer ROMs.
d. So, just for the sake of the rest of these steps, we are going to assume that you have flashed a newer ROM and are now going to flash Radio 1.58.25.17.
e. Now, just download 1.58.25.17 from the link I posted above (should be a .zip), extract the files to a folder on your computer, run KaiserCustomRUU.exe, click Next, Next, Update, then Finish.
f. Congratulations, you have flashed your radio and you are completely done. If, for example, you are experiencing issues with the camera and phone, just flash a different radio using the same method as posted above.
That's it.
And remember, please read the Wiki, Stickies, and G.W.E.N.I. for the answers to most of your questions. Or, you could use the wonderful Search functions of this forum.

This might get me one step closer to finding out why I can't flash a HardSPL. Tried every possible way for 2 days (questions thread here somewhere) but no luck.
I'll try some searching, but can you perhaps give the link where specific instructions above were posted? I'd like to try the seperate .exe and .nb file approach rather then the not-working-for-me JumpSPL1.xx versions. Thanks
EDIT : Don't worry, I've found the link to above...
EDIT2 : Tried above and got the white screen. Redownloaded your JumpSPL1.56 and HardSPL again and tried everything again with all my fingers crossed. IT WORKED!!!! Dunno why or how, but it did... ;-)

I used jumpSPL1.56 KAIS und hardSPL 3.56 w/o problems to flash to ROMeOS.
BTW the neon and Niki Radio both work, don't forget to disable proxy since some HTC Connection setup CABs have it automatically enabled.

[Q] How to flash latest android version on Polaris

For some reason I can't get my Polaris to run the latest Android version (i.e. Froyo).
1. Downloaded latest kernel polaimg-panel3-240x320-2.6.32-froyo-09-09-10_21.nbh)
2. Downloaded last build (Incubus26Jc's Super FroYo RLS10)
3. Put last build (.tar or .tgz file) on SD card in directory /andboot
4. Flashed by using NBH file together with RUU Update Utility
Now it gets tricky:
when the system reboots, vibrates twice, I see a text rolls a few lines and stops at
usb_function_register. can somebody help.
attached photo showing screen
thanks
I changed the .nbh file to "polaimg-panel3-240x320-2.6.32-froyo-02-09-10_16"
and now it stops at a different line.see attached photo
Come on guys if someone can help i would really apriciate.
NBH file is use when on the three colored screen.
Seems you doesn't have blank screen, that is work, but you need to flash your radio first, or else the installation will not continue, refer to the guide:
http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/androidhtc/wiki/HowToInstallWithAtoolsNand
I did exactly what the guide says. I have installed hard spl and the last radio, but nothing different with the results
