HELP: Finding a PocketPC with serial port - General Topics

Hi,
We need to find PocketPC devices with the following specs, now that Alpine (Qtek 2020i, XDA2i, etc) and Blue Angel (Qtek 9090, XDA2s, etc) are out of (or soon out of) production:
- Serial Port (RS-232)
- Integrated GSM/GPRS
- >= 3.5" screen
Any ideas?
/Patrik

Blue Angel (Qtek 9090 etc.) and SAP Software

Hi There, I'm just curious if there's anyone out there that uses their Blue Angel (Qtek 9090 etc.) to interact with the software product SAP.
If so, please share your experiences, recommendations, etc.
Thanks!

Comparing Universal models

I suggest a running comparison of the different Universal models. I have tried to complete this comparison but I am doing really badly. So, I have turned to XDA Developers to ask for help. Please add anything you know as differences to the attached table and repost.
I am trying to decide which model to buy and I know there are significant differences in the software (OS version, extensions and applications)provided as standard. So, I thought this comaprison might be useful to others.
I know there is a new XDA Exec ROM version available but have been unable to check out exactly what it includes.
I am particularly interested in A2DP and USB host support. Having owned an XDA II for many years, I am keen to not lose functionality including CF card compatibility and VGA output (via the backpack) which I guess will be possible via USB hosting and external USB devices.
You forget the Orange SPV M5000 on your list.
I haven't updated your comparation, but my Qtek 9000 is running the latest official Qtek ROM (that I know of):
ROM: 1.30.77 WWE date: 02/20/06
Radio: 1.09.00
Protocol: 42.42.P8
ExtROM: 1.30.176
Also no Universal has or had USB Host functionality (unfortunatelly)
and as far as I know all Universal versions have Bluetooth 1.2
Hi.
I saw a post around here somewhere, about hidden functionality on the Exec\Universal.
It was stated there that some wiring was missing, so the device cannot support USB host on the hardware level.
I suggest you search for that post. I could be wrong but if it is so no ROM update will give you this functionality.
Universal comparison update
Given that you have kindly contributed to the comparison, I have updated and reposted it.
If anyone else knows of differences in the standard hardware (unlikely), software or supplied accessories then I would be grateful for your comments.
Here is my wishlist in case anyone has any suggestions of products out there now or coming soon:
I need CF to take cards from my camera or download directly from the camera both of which needs a CF slot or USB hosting. So, if the O2 Exec or equivalent doesn't do it then is there another PDA that meets my minimum spec?
My minimum PDA spec.:
Windows Mobile (5.0)
GSM (tri-band)
3G
GPRS (class B Multislot class 10/EDGE)
Bluetooth (2.0 + a2dp)
Wi-Fi (802.11b/g)
IR
VGA screen (64K colour)
integral keyboard (slide/fold out)
Camera (colour VGA)
SD/MMC card slot
CF card slot or USB host
Well..
I don't really see how the difference between models would matter to anyone. The Rom can be flashed anyway.
On the other hand, which provider, yes, that does matter. Because using an HTC universal on Web&Walk Pro w/ T-mobile for example, is a very different experience from using it with say, O2.
I'm on T-mob and having infinite Internet usage and access to all their hotspots mean I use my HTC as a small laptop (with terminal services). I love it, and even stream music all day long to my device.
Friends of mine on O2 use it only as an oversized phone and PDA, and hate it (too big).
My two cents of course...

The only machine that comes to mind and has most of what you want is FujitsuSiemens Loox T830, that should be released in following months.
It should have most of the above including USB host, with exception of VGA screen -> the screen is only 240x240 square.
So you basically have a choice of HTC Universal with VGA and no USB host/CF or FS Loox T830 with USB host but without VGA...
Actually, you want something like that, take a look at this:

Universal Model Comparison
I think I can solve the lack of CF in the Universal for my problem. I have found a SD-CF adapter and the SD is apparently completely contained within the CF adapter card. So, I should be able to take a pile of SD cards which I can use in my camera and then plug in to my O2 Exec (or equivalent for reviewing, editing, emailing etc.). Of course I'll have nowhere to dowload anything so I'll just have to carry more cards but at least they are useful in both camera and PDA.
If anyone is interested then see http://www.semsons.com/pasdadandcfa.html
I haven't found a UK source yet but I shall pursue it. If anyone gets there before me then please let the forum know.
By the way, has anyone heard of a bluetooth card reader?
The Comparison table will be updated and reposted tomorrow.
Blair, Orange's take on the Universal is the M5000 - not the M600 as you have included in your list. The M600 is a Prophet. 8)
Universal Model Comparison
Thank you everyone for your information.
I have reposted the comparison.
Does anyone know the status of A2DP and Bluetooth version for any or all of the different models and the details for T-Mobile's model?
Does anyone know of any new VGA WM5 phone PDAs coming out soon that I should look at?
You want VGA? Sharp W-Zero3.
You want similar to Uni? Advance TC M.A.G.I.C.

Just for your info - I have this adapter and it's quite usefull. Yes the SD card is completely inserted and it behaves like normal CF card with one exception - it's visibly slower than normal CF cards. In any case, like you mentioned yourself, this does not allow you to download stuff from the card...

Many thanks for that. Is it too slow for use in a camera?

I forgot to ask from where you were able to buy it. I have only found it on Amazon, Japan! I'm in the UK.

I used it sometimes in my old (pretty slow) Nikon camera that had CF - it worked OK...
I bought it from http://shop.brando.com.hk/ good prices and service, I'm not sure if they still have the adaptor...

StowAway / iGo driver (multiplatform) compliance tests

Upon my fellow blogger Tim Hillebrand’s report and because I’ll need to quickly enter a lot of info at MWC (and I don’t want to lug around my desktop replacement and, therefore, pretty heavy IBM Thinkpad a31p just for inputting text), I’ve installed the latest StowAway / iGo Bluetooth drivers on all my mobile devices (even non-Windows Mobile ones) to find out whether the drivers available HERE are (still) compatible with the latest operating system / firmware versions. I’ve found out the following:
Windows Mobile
Pocket PC’s (a.k.a. WM6 Classic / Professional):
HP iPAQ hx4700 (WM5 AKU 3.5.2; selecting & using the Widcomm driver, NOT the MS one); HTC Universal (WM6), Dell Axim x51v (WM5 official A12 (AKU 2.3) ROM with the MS BT stack), HTC Wizard (mfrazzz’ XDA Mobile 6 Release 5 FINAL) and the WM2003 HP iPAQ 2210: all work OK with the factory, default driver.
(Note that, as far as mfrazzz’ XDA Mobile 6 releases are concerned, version 3 was a no-go at all: it didn’t even try to connect. Pressing the Disable built-in HID support doesn’t help at all – unlike with all my other test devices or the same Wizard running Release 5.)
Smartphones (a.k.a. WM6 Standard)
HTC Vox / s710 (factory WM6 Smartphone ROM); no native driver; therefore, I tested it with the s620 / Excalibur / MteoR driver (they’re the same – actually, it seems ALL HTC Smartphones have the same drivers, unlike with WM5 and pre-WM5 Pocket PC’s): OK
HTC Oxygen / s310 with the above MS SP drivers (no native driver): the config app doesn’t even load (“Keyboard driver not functioning!”); then, after closing it, I started to get system errors about the keyboard driver DLL not responding.
Blackberry:
BB 8800 (4.2.1.101 / 2.3.0.80, T-Mobile): Works OK; program invocation hotkeys also work as expected.
Palm OS:
Palm T3: Works OK, albeit some of the program invocation shortcuts (apart from the most basic calendar/ contacts / inbox) take you to some other program, not the default one (unlike with the WM or the BB version). Otherwise, it’s OK.
Symbian:
Nokia N95 (firmware version v20): No native N95 (or any new – the latest ones are dated from 03/2007; the Palm / WinMo / BB drivers have been released a bit later; for example, the BB one in 07/2007) drivers from ThinkOutside; however, the N92 driver works just great on the N95. All the shortcuts work (as opposed to the built-in drivers). Note that the green Fn + Backspace terminates the connection (unlike on WinMo), which, then, must be re-enabled by just re-invoking the wireless keyboard applet. Also note that, unlike with Windows Mobile, Alt+keys directly enters accented characters, which are a bit more cumbersome to bring up under WinMo.
Note that the built-in Tools / Connectivity / Wlss Keyboard works without the need to install any third-party driver – apart from the complete lack of program / task switcher shortcuts and the lack of the English Pound, Japanese Yen and Euro entry.
Conclusion
All in all, the drivers are fully compatible with even the latest devices / firmware versions on all mobile platforms. On Windows Mobile, all the tested WM6 devices, Smartphones and Pocket PC’s alike, worked just great.
That is, you don’t need to be afraid of purchasing the keyboard – it WILL (almost surely) work. The only device not compatible was the HTC Oxygen / s310 low-end MS Smartphone. This doesn’t mean there aren’t other WinMo devices incompatible with the existing drivers, though - it's just that I haven't found one.

hx2410 lost some asset info

During the upgrade of my ipaq hx2410 with (WM2003se-> WM5 1.00.00L -> WM5 1.00.00H -> WM5 1.00.02H ->WM 6) procedure my device has lost some asset info. To be more precise, Serial #: and Model ID: fields in HP Asset viewer are blank. It has happend probably somewhere between WM5 1.00.00H and WM5 1.00.02H. Now my ipaq is not able to comunicate with Activesync (4.5) or HP flasher. Although it is properly recognisable by system drivers, every attend to connect ends with endless loop of Activesync or freeze of HP flasher. Even in pre bl. mode i get an invalid SKU message or freeze.
I’m able to cheat the HP flasher by hotswapping the ipaq with an identical (WM6) unit and upload whatever rom I want. Only downgrade to 2003SE results with proper communication with Activesync (4.5). .... but it doesn’t help with asset info recovery.
Can anybody help?

I need your help (no effort needed :D)

Hello!
I'm working on a website for cooks to submit and host their ROMs. It's fully powered by PHP/MySQL and can handle submissions with little maintenance.
Now I need a list of Windows Mobile devices so I can fill the "target device" dropdown menu.
Please help me by just posting a few devices I might have forgotten.
