Hi there,
I have only owned SPV E100/E200 before so would appreciate advice as now moving onto Pocket PC phone.
On O2's website, they have got both the XDA IIs and IIi for £99 on price plans ranging from £20-£45, I'm going to get one, not sure which one!
My primary use for the phone will be:
Pocket PC usage,
TOM TOM,
Wireless LAN.
I know the IIi is newer and has a better digital camera, but the IIs's slide out keyboard looks so cool! But is it practical? or just unneeded? I haven't had a Pocket PC before so please fill me in!
Which has a better screen? or is more lighter? or just the one you would go for? Please tell me, and why! I have to make my choice soon and I'm letting out a sweat, opinoin's will be greatly appreciated! Many thanks,
For once, price is not a factor, making a choice has become so hard!
There’s a lot of topic like this in the forum already.. Do a search for "IIs IIi" (without the quotes and select search for all terms) and you'll find it all.
That depends whether you want the slide-out thumb keyboard or not.
The IIs has the keyboard, the IIi does not. The keyboard adds bulk to the unit and is according to people I know with them it's a bit of a waste of time. I'd go for the IIi.
Got an Xda 2i yesterday for £99, am very impressed with it. Even though it showed a fault I had with my wireless router and that cast me another £60, but it has connected wirelessly without any problems, it has paired with a BT headset without any problems and battery life is acceptable (will no doubt get better after a couple of charges). Am so far glad I got it, can now say bye bye to my ipaq and nokia phone
If you want keyboard and unoffical WM5, go for XDAIIs. If you don't, go for XDAIIi.
Bottom line: I love XDAIIs's built-in keyboard...
Using IIs for 6 months...
Using IIs for 6 months. Love it... but do not really get a whole lot of use out of the keyboard due to poor shift vs. function key layout. If the IIi has a better camera, I would go for that. A WME 2005 unofficial for IIi will probably work sooner or later. Happy Using!
Steve
When making the same decision I was advised by the manager in my local O2 shop to go for the IIi as the IIs was somewhat unreliable, especially with respect to the slider.
The better camera isn't a particularly big draw for me, quality is patchy at best.
I did manage to score a tenner discount on the IIi without any argument from the shop manager, so well worth asking if you decide to go for one
This is a hypothetical question. If you could have a free XDA II or free XDA Exec, what would you choose and why?
EXEC with no thought whatsoever.
Better phone, more functions, faster.... just years ahead of XDAII.....
Is the XDA Exec faster than the XDA II in reality? I know the CPU is faster in the Exec, but it has just 64mb of RAM and quite a few users are saying that the overall operation of the device is 'SLOW'.
I'm attracted to the XDA Exec because of the 640x480 screen and built-in WiFi, but I'm not sure if I could live with the slow performance. Decisions, decisions...
I'd go for the xda exec, I had reservations about performance but if you take the advice of the guys that are already playing you'll realise the exec is an exceptional phone/pda/camera/wifi/bluetooth/game Machine/organiser etc! etc! super gadget.
The exec is still pretty new and the software guys are still catching up with patches etc a point in case is the TomTom navigator installer. but I now have TomTom 5.1 installed and it runs very smoothly. Most of the problems with this phone seem to arise from the O2 software, go for the basic or corp install using the 0506 code to remove the O2 software during install of corporate mode and you will have a very capable phone.
Update 31 Oct 05: I have been able to get the Exec to see the Cellink but as of yet cannot hear anything via the headset.
One thing to be aware of, is to make sure that your BlueTooth headset can be found, mine is a Cellink BTHS-6023-F and the exec will not see it. the bluespoon Ax is a good choice for this phone and i'll be changing mine to that soon.
with 2005 ram is not the same thing as it was with other mw versions
sure the xdaII have 128MB ram but it's shared between storaging data and running programs
so if you want to use the full or close to full 128MB then you cant have any data on your xdaII
on universal you have all data in flash rom so they dont use ram
and the data is not lost when you pull the batt
Get the Exec, sel it on eBay, make some money and buy what you really want instead!
Jasjar v XDA II
Jasjar is better.
I had both, but never took it to wm2005, but had 2003SE.
THe overall functionality in software is about the same, there is a slightly slower speed overall, about 1 second at most for most stuff. You do need to tweak it a little bit, but you had to tweak the XDA II a lot, I had lots of hard resets on the XDAII, volumes of tweaks, registry hacks, fix up hacks, etc etc etc I spent weeks on the XDAII stuff reviewing and keeping up with the Sin 2003SE developments, then buzz light year upgrades, and all the other problems people encountered.
What I like in the Jasjar that the XDAII didnt have:
WIFI built in, versus using the backpack or sd wifi cards
Clam closure, no need for a case, compact and protected
3G and web access over 3G
"better" camera, though the quality isnt really there
Keyboard, keyboard, keyboard, back lit keyboard working at night
Flip screen
Looks so coooool, even hi tech techo's drool
WM Player 10
Built in Voice Dialler (I switched anyway to MSVC), but at least it had one built in
What the XDAII had that Jasjar doesnt
Nothing, and a lot less than nothing without Buzz Lightyear
Tell a lie, my Navman GPS bluetooth software worked
SOOOOOOO..... free, not free, go the jasjar/exec: Universal, it is good, despite the problems. XDAII had lots and lots of problems, tweaks and hacks before it became what it became.
Cheers
Simon
Since I got my first Universal (JasJar) some 2 years back, I have tried several other alternatives, including TyTN 2, HTC Touch Pro, and even Toshiba G910. I have always come back to the Universal. In fact, when I broke my JasJar, I replaced it with Vodafone V1640. I have come to conclude that the Uni is the closest to my ideal PDA/phone for a business user.
But I regret one or two things about the Universal, and I honestly wish we would have a Universal 2 to address these snags. My short wish list for Universal 2 are is follows:
1) Retain the present format - don't change the form factor; it is simply great as it is. Forget those who say it is too heavy or bulky - they don't know what they want. (If weight is your problem, then don't ask for a comfortable keyboard and a large screen as you have in the Uni.)
2) Give it 256MB RAM. This is by far the biggest issue with the current Uni with 64MB RAM. Often when I run something like TextMaker (SoftOffice), the device runs out of memory.
3) Make the stylus holder more secure. Either let it click into place or have a magnetic slot to secure it, like the HTC Touch Pro.
4) Make the SD card slot more secure - perhaps with a cover. As it is, it pops out rather easily.
5) Have a built-in GPS
Any further ideas for Universal 2?
We can fantasize all we want but we aint going to get it! There wont ever be a Uni 2 for sure....atleast i'm pretty convinced about it.
I just broke my uni a few weeks ago and couldnt help but buying another one...(was quite a struggle to find a seller!). I too love the form factor and ergonomics of the uni - simply brilliant.
Anyway, I guess I'll just wait up for a while until there is something like the TyTN 2 where you can tilt the display on the Touch pro and I might just buy one of them! Or the Touch HD Pro - if there will ever be one!
Cheers!
San
Anyway, for the "wishlist" I'd basically want a built in GPS, a better 3D accelerated graphics card, MORE RAM & storage, and an outside smaller display if possible!
Video out would be essential for me, & with that hardware run GFX.
Sadly I dont think there will be a Universal 2, although I wish they would. The line between laptop, PDA and mobile phone has blurred so much, all I really wish is that the mobile industry in general stops limiting the capabilitys of hand held devices (e.g. Iphone) with closed platforms, limiting hardware capabilities and add expansion ports.
Dear rsawoseyin,
You have a Grate Idea about Universal. I also love Universal very much.
If the Universal is made according to the Specs given by you and some other features, like Multitouch Display, Accelerometer, etc., like in iPhone, then it would become Deam Machine!!!!!!!!
So, you request the iMate or HTC to create such type of Universal.

I agree with you,
I have had Jasjar and Vodafone V1640. Now I've a Toshiba G900, I'm happy with it and I've started to cook roms for it, then G900 is really important for me.
But I've loved my UNI, perfect size for me, perfect display, perfect keyboard...
To have it today with its features plus a lot ram, storage and GPS, it'll be really a dream. Yes, today we have many devices like Xperia, HD, Touch pro... BUT, apart storage, ram and gps, no one offers all the things the UNI has!
And, if I had to add a thing on a new UNI, I would put the host usb function. I have it on G900 and it can be really usefull!

You pretty much stated the main shortfalls of the Uni.
The only thing I can think of that you left out was EDGE compatibility....
I only been a Imate JasJar owner for 6 months however I love the device. I have a Wizard (T-Mobile MDA)...had it for almost 2 years but for work, I exclusively use my Uni. I send/receive A lot of emails at work and the Uni is perfect for that. Plus I like having an unique PDA.....I live in the US so many Americans never seen a Universal so most of my coworkers, friends, or people that happen to see me use the Uni look at it like WHAT IS THAT? lol.

I love the from factor "Micro laptop" but I have not seen anything for the future.....

Glad to see you're a Uni user too.
Even tho we both have the G900 and love the 800x480, hackibility/cookibility wise the Uni is just so reliable.
It's very hard to make a perfect ROM for G900 due to the GF5500's lack of proper driver while the Uni is just a plain PXA27x device with drivers readily available.
IMO the perfect Uni2 should have the following:
-PXA32x 800Mhz+ (CorePlayer makes great use of the newer SIMD - WMMX2)
-800x480 WVGA 3.8"
-KB
-Slightly less than 20mm thick
-Same folding/twisting style
-aGPS (from MSM6281)
-Tri-band HSDPA 3.5G (from MSM6281)
-256MB+ RAM
-512MB ROM
-SDHC (or even two! )
Or that concept Touch HD Pro, but with PXA32x 800Mhz instead plus MSM6281 for aGPS+HSDPA. Qualcomm's QTv isn't powerful enough for WVGA H.264 playback.
Too bad HTC haven't made a replacement for the Uni. The closest contender is the Blackstone.
My Imate JasJar's camera doesn't work so I just bought a O2 exec in mint condition off ebay for an excellent price. The O2 should last for a another year...when the price of the Blackstone goes down a bit.... $700+ for a new Blackstone is a bit steep right now for me...lol
even tho i never seen it, on paper Touch Pro looks like ideal replacement.
Nevertheless, here's my wish list for Uni 2
GOOD CAMERA. (For ****'s sake HTC, if after all these years u still cant make a good one, LICENSE technology from sharp or sony!!!!)
fast CPU (900Mhz +)
and 2D drawing acceleration chip
GOBS of internal flash memory (storage), 8+ GB
dump SD card slot, in favour of USB 2.0 access to the internal 8.0GB+ flash
lots of RAM memory, ie 512MB+
ipod/touch pro UI
QUAD band
reduce weight/thickness
higher capacity battery
GPS that works with TOMTOM
scratch/shock resistant case
Actually, I think that HTC meant Touch Pro to be Universals successor. While it is better only in some respects, it is the only device with at least comparable keyboard. You may say that display is too small. But should not need to tap display too often when you have a good keaybord.
hi everyone,
I'm after a smartphone... i think. I have a budget of £100, but may be willing to go a little over. Obviously for this price, it would more than likely be a used unit (which i'm not fussed about).
I'm looking for a phone that can act like a pda, taking appointments and such, one that i can check my emails, surf the net and chat on msn with. It will also need to be able to connect to Wi-Fi and bluetooth. I would prefer one that could read SD or SDHC cards so i could listen to my music and watch movies (if this is possible?). I would also prefer one with a keyboard as i do write a lot of documents.
GPS is not essential, but would be a nice feature to have, as would a camera.
I have no idea about cpu speeds or memory on these things... so as long as it's able to handle the web browsing and watching movies or listening to music then it should be fine.
Models i've been looking at are the o2 xda II, xda 2i and the xda mini s. The mini S ticks a lot of the boxes, but if anyone has any better recommendations or any help at all, then it would be much appreciated as i have no idea what im looking at with these gadgets.
Hmmm, considering your budget, the HTC HERMES (TYTN not TYTN II) is still a pretty good acceptable PDA phone with QWERTY keyboard and sells for around £100 on eBay UK. I assume you do not really care about GPS capabilities?
A Universal would be also good option, and believe me you won´t find anithing better than Uni for 100 pounds
I have seen some stupidly cheap HTC Diamonds on ebay recently. Sub £150, and to be fair its worth the extra £50.
But at sub 100, I'd say Hermes if you want a keyboard, Elfiin (Original touch with double ram and rom) if you dont, or if you dont mind the bigger size and stuff, then a uni.
I might even sell you my athena for a bit more than a hundred if you want it. I have wanted rid of it for ages, but cant ever get round to putting it on ebay... (sorry for the shameless plug)
Rory
I’m not up with modern tech..I want to replace my O2 orbit (htc p3300), I know its ancient but I find the whole process utterly confusing.
Please any advice would be gratefully received and I must point out I have a limited budget; I’d prefer to buy a phone rather than contract.
One of the things I’m confused about is windows phones and pocket pc, my only concern is I have Tomtom for my Orbit and I don’t particularly want to buy another sat nav software package.
Ideally I’m looking for something that has mini usb, gps, fm radio, micro sd and blue tooth. The reason I want to upgrade is that my orbit has been running so slow lately.
if i did understand...
you are asking for a phone?

Will these phones run the TomTom software I have?
Will Pocket PC software run on windows phone???
Windows Mobile software won't run on Windows Phone so you're going to lose your TomTom software either way as you won't get a new Windows Mobile device - it's been phased out and replaced by Windows Phone.
I know that's a pain with regards to your satnav software, but it does open up the playing field to include every phone on the market now. Your real choice is between the OSs out there. I suggest picking one of them and then narrowing down your phone choice on requirements after that.
Just spend a day or two on the internet looking at different devices and then maybe visit a few shops to have a play with some of them.
I’ve been looking at a second hand HTC HD mini....I'm assuming its Pocket PC because its runs WM 6.5.3.....???
Sorry for being a plank, but I’m kinda overwhelmed by all the choices and I don’t understand a lot about the subject in the first place.

Yes, it's a Pocket PC. If you like the look of that then go for it. Alternatively, if you've got a bit more money to spend then look at the HTC Touch HD or the HTC HD2. I have both those devices and they were great. I also had paid navigation software which I lost when I came to Android, but it's no biggie because the free navigation software with Android is just as good (it requires a data connection though as maps aren't local).

Funny I looked at a review, out of the three they rated the HD mini tops because of the glass screen.......Don’t trust these web site reviews, always an agenda.
