I know this question comes up in every phone forum at least once, so I thought it is time for the Tornado forum as well.
I am trying to decide between the SP5 and the 8310.
For me, fast ROM updates is the important factor. Support, schmupport, that I can get it here much better than from any tech support line.
To this day, I have owned 3 imate products. Although I like the fact that they have ROM updates, I am disgusted by how they don't back up their products. I had a JasJar that became a brick within a week I had it, and for a whole month they lied through their teeth to me about how they were just about to help me, just wait 2 more days.
So, not wanting to give them any more business, I am looking at the Qtek now, but how is the ROM update situation? Do they have a ROM update for the 8310 yet? (imate does) Do they post rom updates in a timely manner?
I have the Qtek, no ROM updates yet that I'm aware of. You can put the iMate ROMs on it if you like.

Hello, ladies and gentlemen.
I will be relinquishing my i-mate JAM for an M500 in a few hours, so I'd like to take the opportunity to thank everyone here for a great time and experiencing hacking away at these HTC devices. Though we've accomplished much, it's a double-edged sword with HTC and their branding companies such as i-mate, Dopod, O2, etc. They give us enough leeway to make some really cool customizations, but they also have the attitude that 'if you want features you're missing in your current software, we'd rather you purchase new hardware (read: WM5).'
The Eten M500 seems to be a very formidable competitor with some serious technical support and definite upgrade path to WM5, so in the long run, this will likely outlast the JAM in most respects.
When I get my M500, I'll hope to find a way to get into the bootloader and make a dump of the unit and perhaps end up helping the community who's helped me and countless others with their HTC devices.

Has ETEN's build quality improved? Their first few attempts at PPCPE were not so good... maybe you can share your ETEN experience when you get your m500. Have fun with your new device!

there was a forum post a while back on some random forum, some guy offering a 'upgrade' service to crossbow, dont know whether it was legit or not
but, by the looks of it, the same way the himalaya recieved a WM5 rom aaaages ago, apparently, there the tornado will be doing so too. lets just hope theres enough people on these forums who will be able to develop the rom further!
am waiting for it too. the guy was was offering $30 for the upgrade but never responded to my email. must be out there somewhere

Since HTC has let us know that it will not roll out WM6.0 ROM's for currently devices running 5.0. I think HTC doens't agree with "Let's pray" but wants to hear you say: "Let's pay..".
I have heard that the Treo 750 is going to get an upgrade to WM6.0. But this is a Palm device, and not a device comming from HTC.

yes, even if it doesnt come out specifically for the s200, there are other ti omap 200mhz devices out there like the s200 that have just come out. correct me if im not mistaken, but it would then be easier to dump a custom rom for the prophet then?

Particular thanks to faria who provided me with working ROMs when I was beginning to wonder if I should just go buy another phone. Also to funman who guided me through building my own Roms when I thought that was beyond my skills.
I'm heading over to the Hermes forums now. A friend gave up on figuring his out and so he sold it to me for $200 (he didn't know about xda-developers!). I couldn't pass that up! I hope the guys over there are as nice !

I've gotten off to a terrific start thanks to the Hermes forums. Installed Custel 2.5 WM6 and I'm back to almost the same setup that I had on my Wizard. I was very happy to find most everything transfered over (PocketBreeze, iLauncher, PocketWeather, phonealarm, rlToday, IM+, muns keyboard skin, and the JPL big button phone dialer !! About the only thing missing is BatteryStatus. The FAQ says there's no overclocking software for the Hermes?
And the speed using 3G! WOW!!! Absolutely worth it !!

There are already offical WM6 versions out.. maybe you should test some first before you brick your phone... i dont mean to sound the way it does but i'm still hoping t-mobile or at&t are gonna release an offical Wm6 for my MDA.. so i do haev to say good luck to everyone with there new hermes

I did. The first thing I did upon receiving the phone was load the official Cingular WM6 rom on it. Given that there was a WM6 for the hermes, I thought that maybe I'd just stick with that version.
However, I ran into some small annoyances (activesync problems) and it was missing some software apps that I gotten used to having (Task Manager as an example), so that's when I decided to try one of the "unofficial" roms. I did my homework and read through the load process and basically followed the instructions. Custel focuses on making Cingular compatible roms, so it was a good fit for my needs.
I guess I was very cautious about installing custom roms when I first got my wizard (prior to my hermes). But after all the annoyances with it (daily soft-resets, monthly hard-resets, ongoing network problems, etc., etc.), if I hadn't installed one, I would have given up on the phone. Another example of that: I got my hermes because a friend got fed up with it and got a Treo instead. From installing custom roms, I got into customizing them myself using faria's kitchen apps.
It's not for everyone and I understand that, but I've greatly benefited from the efforts of the guys who work so hard to build these custom roms !
Is the device that difficult or that those that know how to do it does not have the device? I'm sure some of us wouldn't mind helping to dump the rom, especially the beta wm6.1 rom.

I think it`s because some I-Mate models are non HTC manufactured as this forum specializes on HTC, but a Mod or Admin could give a better answer.

i have an imate 8502 as well as samsung i780, there is an 6.1 upgrade on this forum for the imate... and i am very happy with it...
just to let you know imate is in truble with money...
I actually knew that iMate is in trouble financially, but that doesn't mean we can have cooked roms. I was hoping that there would be some cooked rom that would free up more program memory and remove some of iMate's bloatware.

i got it for free thats why i am using it, if you ask me to buy a product which may not have support in near future i will not buy it... and u are right about the things imate have loaded on it are useless to most of us... i hope those could be removed..
i'm selling my imate 9502 when i get my X1 !
I ordered this nice and almost unknown device, and hopefully it will be in my hands tomorrow.
I already looked at the ROM, and I noticed that the image is in it's own format.
Now I'm not so skilled in the low level work needed to dump the image and to reassemble it in a flashable format.
But I hope in the help of a guru (maybe EFN ?) here.
