Hey people on the board!
I'm a relative newbie in this PDA-stuff so I have a question which perhaps (hopefully) is easy to answer. Problem:
I have an application which I run on my Qtek 1010. The application runs fine, but prior to using it, a significant amount of time must be spent on installing and configuring it. In case of battery-faliure, this needs to be done from scratch. I would therefore like the Qtek to execute a script-like file (autorun.exe) which performs this task, immediately after booting.. The file is present on a flash-card inserted in the slot. How do I do this? Where - on the card - do I place the file? In the root? And how do I detect it and run it automatically after a cold-boot?
Any help would be greatly appreciated! Thx!
/Joe72
Its quite simple
Hi there, your problem to fix is quite easy.
If you look in in your windows directory with the built-in explorer, you'll find a directory - either "startUp" or "Autostart" depends on the system language you are using. Here you put a link to the program you're having on card. With every cold- or warm boot it will be executed.
regards
cimber
On the memory card make a directory named 2577, I believe the pocket pc will look here for your autostart on boot, try it and see. You can try putting a cab file in there or your autostart config file. I am not an expert in this but thats how its done with ipaq navigation system which is an automatic routine using the 2577 directory and I have also seen other software using the same method.
the file should be called 'autorun.exe' in the '\storage card\2577\' directory.
when you insert the card, the autorun.exe will be copied to \windows, and executed with 'install' as parameter.
when you remove the card, it will get executed with 'uninstall' as parameter.
and then removed from \windows.
but this will not nescesarily happen at boot.
just figured out another thing: the number you put in the .lnk file in \windows\startup is completely ignored by windows.
also, if the executable is in \windows, you may omit the path,
you may also omit the extension if it is .exe.
if you specify commandline parameters, your application will get passed upto 255 characters starting from the first non-whitespace character after the executable name.and including any newlines that may be in the file.
Hi!
Thanks for the response. I'll give the methods a try during the day and get back.
Thanks so far - I appreciate it

Hi there (again)!
I have tried the different suggestions with no luck. Perhaps I should have been a bit more specific. What I actually need is to have the autorun.exe run (install) a number of cab-files also on the flash-card. I was - perhaps naively - thinking that there would be a generic tool out there to create this type of autorun.exe file? I am looking for something along the lines of what is being done here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=508&highlight=autorun
Only, in the case above, the autorun.exe lauches a specific .cab-file which contains a ROM for the PDA.
Is there a "configurable" .cab-installing autorun.exe out there somewhere? Or should it be written from scratch every time for new purposes?
Hope I make myself clear
/Joe72
yes, it is in the extended rom, processing the config.txt file.
eeeh, but the location of the config.txt is taken from the registry, which is currently always set to \extended_rom\config.txt.

Could you explain that to me in more detail, please? As I mentioned, I am a relative newcomer in this Xda stuff Thanks..
/Joe72
what you are asking for is the autorun.exe found in the extended rom,
look for 'extended rom batch language' on the forum for details.
problem is that the autorun.exe from the extended rom uses the config.txt
pointed to by the "[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Comm] AutoRunCfg" registry value. which always is '\Extended_ROM\Config.txt"
what you could do, is change the 'autoruncfg' string in the autorun.exe binary in to something else. and then fill your own config.txt path in that registry value.
Thanks - that sounds like the way to do it. I guess I would copy the original config.txt, add my .cab-files, put it on the flash-card and then change the key in the registry to point to the card. Is that how it would go?
Now another stupid question: How do I access the registry? There is apparently no regedit.exe like on my desktop?

Managed to access the registry using Windows CE Remote Registry Editor. But whooops.. After a cold boot, the registry is reset to factory settings?! Hence my changes of the path to config.txt are also lost..? What to do?

What you'll need:
CAB editor, such as OCP WinCE CAB Manager
Madkat's WM2k3 Boot Image Tool (attached)
Adobe Photoshop or other image editor
a compatible HTC device such as the Magician or Blue Angel
Summary:
Customized SplashX.nb files to be installed in \Windows directory of your device
Included:
Customizable Splash2.psd file for use with Adobe Photoshop
Steps:
1. Change the Splash2.psd file as necessary, then save a 24-bit BMP file called Splash2.bmp.
2. Use Madkat's Tool to convert the BMP file to an NB file.
3. Use the CAB editor to replace the Splash2.nb file with your version. WinCE CAB Manager may state an "Unspecified Error" when replacing the file. Instead, delete the original file, then drag the new NB file into the CAB file, hardcoding the \Windows folder as the install destination.
4. Save the CAB file and run it on your device!
Magician devices have only one splash screen, and it must be saved as Splash2.nb.
Blue Angel devices have two splash screens, Splash1.nb and Splash2.nb. Use the above steps to incorporate both splash screens as necessary.
Splash screens will be retained even after a hard reset, so use this after the Anansky's Big Storage hack, or if you just want to personalize your device, such as in the unfortunate event that it's lost or stolen - unless they know this trick, they won't be able to get rid of it!
Have fun!
Thanks mate works like a dream!!
Maybe it's just me, but I've read this post here and at Howardforums and I'm clearly missing something.
I've only ever used the nb_image_converter_859_418.exe to convert "any" bmp to the Splash2.NB file.
Then I drop that into my Windows Folder and use MDA3_bootimage_changer2.cab to apply the file. (Yes I'm using a Magician with this file!)
Soft reset and that's that. No need to do any cab file editing.
Cheers
Howard
PS. I've have both tools on my pc and can repost them, but they are from this site!

Tried that way myself a while ago but for some reason it refused to work for me? (could of been the fact i used a file called XDA2_bootimage_changer.CAB)?? anyway now I can use self contained cabs so I make some splash's for my friends

it must be me, but what cab file are we using here ?

If you don't like Bill's Stuff...
I wonder if anyone can put some help my way.....
I used the xda2 image changer before and I had custom images on my XDA2.
I use this and all I get is a black screen on startup. If I open the .nb file with the converter it shows as it should. (this same .nb works on my XDA2!)
I now have a plain black boot up screen!!
DOH!!!!
Any ideas......?
THanks
First i had the t-mobile splash... wich i didn't like.
Now, whatever bootsplash cab i make, or download here.. after running it, my bootscreen stays blank ( as in black ).
oh well... its an improvement over t-mobile pink
( or is it because i'm running an ancient rom : 1.01.00 WWE ?, only have the device for 3 days... will be upgrading this weekend tho )
Here are my 2 favourites Splashscreens.
The blue one ist for the silver Magician, the darker one is for the new O2 XDA mini (black edition).
Hi I've editted the o2 logo here's the jpg file
I tried to upload the psd so you can edit it but it doesn't work, to bad!
Step-by-step making your own splashscreen

and find everything you need to know.
It worked perfectly for me...
Excellent information, real easy to do
this is mine:
Awesome...
I saw this before, but I have just tried it... and it is really cool 8) ... it gives the device a whole new look...
thanks BTT
My way to splash changer.
Hi,
I thanks to BTT for Splash Changer how to. But it is troublesome to everytime run WinCE cab manager in order to put Splash2.nb to the .cab file.
I try to remove Splash2.nb from the .cab file (and renamed the .cab to splash_changer.cab). Afterthat, put the Splash2.nb manually to \windows on PPC. Voila....., no need to everytime run WinCE cab manager!!!!!
Process:
1. Edit .bmp file to your like (Must be 240x320 pixels, 24bit).
2. Use nb_image_converter_859_418 to convert .bmp file to .nb, and change the .nb file to Splash2.nb.
3. Put Splash2.nb file directly to your \windows on PPC. You can do activesync and explore it.
4. Put splash_changer.cab to \temp for you to easier found it.
5. Run file explorer on PPC, and tap on splash_changer.cab.
6. Done! You can check by soft reset the PPC.
Hope it is helpful!

Arto.

I have been messing around with cooking roms for a few weeks now. I have cooked up a rom (New Att Rom) that has these numbers.
Total Storage: 166.16mb (Free 164.27mb)
Total Program: 101.38mb (Free 75.28mb)
I am trying to make this Att rom as clean as possible. I have removed abosultly everything that I can. I have a few questions though as Im being kind of a perfectionist. When I load up my rom and go into the registry I can find traces of old programs that were removed from the rom (for example transcriber or sim manager registry keys) I have edited the proxml files and they are not the curlprit. I have checked the .RGU files and there is only two in the whole rom (one is boot.rgu and the other one has only one entry in it) I have also checked the initflashfiles.dat file and edited it but it doesnt have the registry keys I am looking for either. Where is the main part of the registry in these roms?
Another question I have is why the dsm files (when opened in a text editor) show other programs or files in them. I would like to delete the microphone, clear storage and key lock app or the TTY icon in the settings screen. I have found these files in the DSM files but they cant be deleted. Is there a way to edit the dsm files or are they updated when other changes are made?
Lets say I load the stock att rom on my phone and make changes to the registry (add or remove registry settings). Then if I dump the rom, will the registry changes be saved when I use the dumped rom in cooking a new rom?
Has anyone figured out a way to get the memory back when a memory card is placed into the phone? I would be around 79mb free program memory (before speed tweaks) if someone figures this out!
I will have a few more questions probably but I cant remember them right now. The rom I have made is working very well and is stable. I just want to make sure all of the trace files in the registry and other places are gone. Thanks for the help
All of the pros must be working on their own roms, look at how many have been updated! Someone must know the answer to a few of these questions. I dont mind doing the work I just need a few hints!

Default.hv and User.hv are the default and user registries where you will find the entries.

There's a app that does it in the general section under hacking IIRC search for build dsm that should bring it up.

I beleave the answer to this is no... the dump you get is the unmodiffied ROM you have after flash it... all changes after this are not dumped.
Cheers.
Great info thanks guys

You can not edit directly, you must convert from .HV format to REG (text) format using RGUCOMP.EXE (included in KaiserKitchen) to edit, and once edited, convert back to .HV with the same tool.
Code:
dump default.hv:
1. SET _FLATRELEASEDIR=.
2. RGUCOMP -o default.hv -nologo > default.txt
3. Add 'REGEDIT4' (first line)
4. Last line MUST be empty
5. Save as UNICODE
... edit the txt file ...
build default.hv:
1. rename default.txt to boot.rgu (same folder as RGUCOMP.exe)
2. SET _FLATRELEASEDIR=.
3. RGUCOMP -b
4. rename boot.hv to default.hv
Cheers.
Great info. I have cooked up a rom and I am having a hard time figuring out what is causing the screen delay in my registry settings. Does anyone know what setting is causing like the three second delay in the screen going from landscape to portrait? Thanks
SO if I understand you correctly.
I can open the files, edit in all of my reg edits (particularry the ones I can not export) and recompress it with RGUCOMP.EXE and cook my edits into my rom ?
Ok I tried this and finally figuted I have to do it from a command line.
WHen I do
1. SET _FLATRELEASEDIR=.
2. RGUCOMP -o default.hv -nologo > default.txt
I get fronm the txt file:
dump default.hv:
1. SET _FLATRELEASEDIR=.
2. RGUCOMP -o default.hv -nologo > default.txt
3. Add 'REGEDIT4' (first line)
4. Last line MUST be empty
5. Save as UNICODE
... edit the txt file ...
build default.hv:
1. rename default.txt to boot.rgu (same folder as RGUCOMP.exe)
2. SET _FLATRELEASEDIR=.
3. RGUCOMP -b
4. rename boot.hv to default.hv
obviously I am doing something wrong, but I have no idea what.
Hi,
I want to delete a bitmap file present in my original device XIP.
(i know how to port a xip from new donor xip for my device, so i know how to extract and rebuild it).
When my device boot, i can see a ms splashscreen, this image is in nk.exe i think, in xip, but i don't know where is the data block to remove it (i'm a noob in hex coding).
Could someone help me in this step ?
Thanks a lot in advance.
Attached files : nk.exe (already dumped from device xip.bin), xip.bin (if you want to dump it with xipport) and an image which resembles that of the boot of my device
Any idea please ?
isn't that the welcomehead96.png ??
That one isn't in the nk.exe..

No, it's not welcomehead96.png, this files doesn't exists on my smartphone device (Vox).
I tried to replace nk.exe (650 Ko) with another nk.exe (320 Ko) from a chinese Vox rom, and on boot, ms splashscreen dosen't exists with this file.
So, i think a data block has been removed from nk.exe, and i want to know how (maybe hex).
Any idea ?
afaik, the splash screens arent in the xips , they are in the SYS
but hey this is smartphone, never played with them ;/

So, why when i use nk.exe from a chinese rom in my xip, ms splashscreen disappears ?
On ATOM PPC, we can see a splash screen in nk.exe, see here :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=370023
But it doesn't work for me, i can't find BM6 value.
Any idea ?
Have you tried Axe hex editor?
It has a mode in which you can view binaries as a graphic file (you have to play with zoom and with though to recognize the pictures.).
(only works if the images are raw bitmaps, but this mode has revealed a lot to me).
Thanks for this answer, i'll try and tell you.
Oki, i installed AXE HEX EDITOR, and tried to open nk.exe (s000 and s002 files).
But i don't know how i can see a bmp block. Could you help me on this step ?
Thanks.
Uploaded a screencapture of how I can see the BMP:
S002 contains the bitmap (I was very surprised to see a bitmap in the XIP, but then again, it is smartphone version of WM).
load the S002 file
Switch to grafical mode (blue G button)
Set Width to 480 (this is trial and error, but you will learn to see structures and estimate the propper width when seeing code if you use it a lot.
(and zoom out a couple of times)..
BTW colours aren't the real colours but just colours given to hex values.
This method is also good for seeing other structures in code.
Guess you can make an exe from the module, edit it with an pe-editor and then chunk it into modules again.
Thanks a lot, i can see bitmap now.
I tried to rec nk.exe to a file, but recmod.exe can't, i obtain an error and a little nk.exe file (less than 1Ko).
Do you know another soft to register a module to a file ?
Thanks again !
After some tests, i can replace bitmap with another (with an hex editor), so, i know the data block to remove in nk.exe.
But, if i delete the bitmap data block, my device don't boot.
Maybe, because of nk.exe size is different and i must edit something in tables ?
Could someone help me on this tep ?
Thanks.
Any idea please, i can't find a solution.
Thanks.
Always blocked, any idea please ?
Tried with all tools available, but couldn't rebuild this nk.exe
Normally you can re-assemble modules to a pe-file and vice versa, but the nk.exe seems to be an exception.
Deleting the whole bitmap would shift the whole module, that is why the device won't boot.
Maybe someone who does more with relocation tables etc (eg. the creator of g'reloc) could help you better.
This is out of my league.

Bye.
Hi.
First of all, let me say that half of time took me to look for the right forum in XDA to post this message, and I'm still not sure I'm in the right place..
I think my Q is about modifying my OS, and this is why I post it here.
If the admin think there's better forum to this issue - I'd love to hear it..
Now, to business:
I have a GPS device, brand is X-GPS Navigation, Model GPS-S450B, that I will like to play with.
The OS is Windows® Embedded CE 6.0.
I just found out that at my GPS device, there is a file that resposible to a certain BMP that shown up at the shutdown process.
The filename is "PowerKey.exe", and it reffer to a file named "Notice_en.bmp".
I want to change that Notice-en.bmp file, to show that message in another langueage. I tried to overwrite the file with a similar bmp file, no luck. The file just re-created.
I've tried to edit the PowerKey.exe with a hex editor, and write a new path, to a file in NandFlash directory instead of the Notice_en that lays in Windows folder.
That also didn't go so well. "PowerKey has been preform illegal action and have to be shout down" or something like that, was the message. I could only put the device to sleep, until I recovered the old PowerKey file.
Any solution how to change the BMP file that resposible for the shutdown message?
(I guess the best idea is to write a registry entry to overwrite the BMP file in \Windows directory with the one in the \NandFlash directory every boot, only problem - I donno how to do it. )
Anyone?
There's no solution to my problem?
Recompile the exe.
Thank you.
Any chance to general guidlines in how is that done?
