All Folders not picking up folders on SD card - General Topics

After fiddling with a program called REMOVER, I seemed to have lost the ability to see files/directories on the SD card.
ie When I open NOTES, excel etc.., the ALL FOLDERS only show what is on the main memory. I have set the options to save to Storage Card.
When I use file explorer, the files/directories are still on the sd.
Any ideas would be most welcome.

Please don't tell me a hard reset will be needed!

Have you tried removing sd card, soft reset, replace?

I had tried what you mentioned still didn't work. Hard resetted and still didn't pick up the sd card. I then copied the contents of the sd card to my laptop and formatted the card. I then copied the contents back to the sd which still didn't work. Formatted the sd again and loaded the programs back on one by one. Now all OK.
Appears to have been a hicup on the SD card. I'll be keeping an eye on it.
Thanks for the reply. Paul

Any way of sorting this problem without this drastic solution?
I thought it was just a bug in Windows Mobile 5. For example, I loaded a pdf reader and a gameboy emulator on today, and in both cases, from the program you don't see the files on the SD card.... it's infuriating.

Normally the office apps only searches for files in the folder "My Documents" and its sub folders. This can help to reduce the time of searching if the memory contains many files. But it also can confuse users which don't know this and store files in other folders. So MS added a "feature", a zero byte large file named "ignore_my_docs" (without any extension).
If this entry exists in the root directory, the office apps searches in every folder for files but ignore "My Documents" and its sub folders (exacly what the name says).
To "help" "stupid" users which neither know that they should use a folder "My Documents" for the office apps on every storage card nor know the "magic file" Windows automatically creates the entry "ignore_my_docs" when it can't find a folder named "My Documents" in the root directory. But Windows does never automatically removes this entry when a new folder named "My Documents" is created (in the root directory).
So try to delete an existing "ignore_my_docs" entry (if you use "My Documents") or create it if there is none (if you store the files elsewhere and) if you cant see existing files under ALL FOLDERS.
Hope that helps some people
JH
PS: If this was the reason for the invisible files than no reset will help (remember it's a feature of windows, not a bug  ) but reformat can help (to get rid of an unnecessary entry).

Move MyDocuments on Storage Card?

Hi guys, is it possible to move the default docs folder to the Storage Card?
I mean having everything (video, music, docs, programs settings,etc..) in the card so I can easly synch it and free Ram on my new Jam
Thanks
Not Really.
You can create a directory called "My Documents" on your storage card, and save everything on there. The Operating System will automatically detect the folder and allow you to place documents there.
But there's no way to automatically synchronise your storage card - or have I just misunderstood?
Note: If it looks like the OS isn't using the My Documents on the card properly, check for a 0-byte file called ignore_my_docs and delete it.
You could try super-sync

Virus? memory card won't read... [u][b]"ignore_my_docs

Virus? memory card won't read...I have no anti-virus software in my XDA2 (silly me? is it important nowadays to have anti virus programms in pocket pcs?) - suddenly my nearly full 1 GB sd apacer memory card wont read any more -
the only thing on it is this: "ignore_my_docs" (when I try to delete this message - it comes back again).
In the device's memory, it shows the memory card as STILL BEING FULL!
1) Is this a virus? Does anyone Know what this is about?
2) should I put an anti virus, firewall type thing into my xda?
3) if so, which is the best one?
4)will it get rid of this virus, (if it is a virus)?
5)will it give me all the information back off my my sd card? Is there a way I can get this information back?
thanks people...
there are only about 5 pocketpc virus's or there about
doubt you have one of them
some walaby roms have been reported to delete the sd card for no reason
normal pc undelete programs can undelete your sd card if placed in a sd card reader
you can use search in this forum for many many many posts about the delete issue
sinse you have a walaby device you can narrow your search down to that forum

Ignore_my_docs - very frustrating
By Ed Hansberry on Wednesday, August 14, 2002
Has anyone noticed an "ignore_my_docs" zero byte file on their storage card or ROM file store? I think this was done in the Pocket PC 2002 OS because people had trouble finding data on their storage card unless they had specifically created a \My Documents\ folder.
So, the Pocket PC 2002 now looks at the storage card when you insert it. If \My Documents\ doesn't exist, it puts a hidden file called "ignore_my_docs" on the card. It also has done this to the HP Safe Store or iPAQ File Store. So, what does it do? Well, Pocket PC 2002 apps see this hidden file and look at the root of the storage card for everything. This can be very annoying if you have a large card with hundreds of files on it in other subfolders. For example, my storage cards always look like this:
\Music\
\My Documents\
\app1\
\app2\
Don't get me started on apps being installed in the root versus under a \Program Files\ folder. That is another rant. Ok, if ignore_my_docs exists, apps like Excel and Word will scan the entire card looking for their files. Prepare to wait if it is a 1GB microdrive that is full. The solution is to create \My Documents\ on the card and delete the hidden ignore_my_docs file. To delete it, either dock your device and use Explorer on the desktop, assuming it is configured to see hidden files, or tap-and-hold in File Explorer on your Pocket PC in the white area below a file listing and select "View All Files." The beauty of this is that Windows Media Player on the Pocket PC 2002 doesn't require music to be in \My Documents\ any longer as it did under the Pocket PC 2000 OS, so all of your music is still readily available.
Edit: The above also applies to Pocket PC 2003 and 2003 SE devices as well as all ROM file stores on any device that allows you to store data there.

just cleared it up for me as well, as I found this file today and wonderd what it was. Thanks.

How can be set Storage Card\My Documents as default folder?

I'd like to save my new docs into the 'My Documents' folder of Storage Card automatically in order to save space in main (RAM) memory. I know it seems to be easy, just go to 'Options' and set 'Save to' Storage Card. I've done it in case of every frequently used program.
Camera and Excel works well, they place the new file into 'Storage Card\My Documents\My Pictures' and 'Storage Card\My Documents'. But Pocket Word and Notes place the new file just into Storage Card root dir.
Any hint how to solve it? Maybe some registry settings?
Thanks in advance
Tibor
(I posted the same message to Magician forum earlier since I have Magician but no answer came so far. - Maybe here...)
Solution
As it was my first request for assistance I thought the community was more helpful...
But no problem, finally I found the solution. (source: support.microsoft. com, article ID: 319616)
Let ME help if somebody has similar problem: you should delete the zero-byte-long 'ignore_my_docs' file from the root dir of Storage Card. This file prevents the built-in applications from using 'My Documents' dir as default/root folder while listing the files in 'Open File' window.
(If you need further explanation, refer to the above-mentioned Knowledge Base article.)
Cheers,
Tibor
Storage Card is a SD card and to save power it's disabled while the pda is off
many applications which run even when the device is off
use my doc dir
if it was located on a unavailable location like the SD card it would cause issues with the device

WM6 Move Mail to SD

Apparently the key is different in WM6. Used to be:
HKCU\Sofware\Microsoft\Mapi
And you could put the path in to the storage device.
Anybody know where it is now to move mail to storage device?
I see the Tweak Option has move IE Cache to SD, but none for Exchange Sync Outlook Mail.
Thanks
If anyone cares, found the new location.
HCLM\Software\Windows\Inbox\Settings
I found this out by turning on in the mail options store the email attachments on the stroage card. I then searched the registry for the path it used on the storage card which lead me to the above key.
Then I just changed the attachment path and added the key
PropertyPath" value="\Storage Card\Mail" datatype="string"
To then get the mail to go there also.
Had to do some tricks with the sim card a few times, renaming and locking up, but I deleted the mail settings for exchange and go it all figured out and now all mail/attachments on the storage card.
Memory just want hold 4000 items plus attachment..necessity.
---DELETE ---
thanks!
I've already know the key, but not the reg name of "PropertyPath", I thought the mail body has to put under \windows\messaging.
a little hint, it's HKLM\System\Inbox, not HKLM\Software\Windows\Inbox...
a problem:
if I add "PropertyPath" value="\Storage Card\Mail" datatype="string"
the next time I reboot my device, a folder named "Storage Card" was created automatically, and the real Storage Card was named "Storage Card2" !!!
I have to remove that propertypath key anyway and keep the mail body under main memory

No, I found a workaround. Rename the new Storage Card folder to Storage Card.bak
Reboot the device and put your storage card back in, it should not create a new folder again. Don't know why, but just leave the Storage Card.bak folder there forever and it reboots over and over fine and you can put mail on the Card and not main memory...
This is essential seeing how I have 2000+ emails I like to sync and have reference too in subfolders on Exchange on my mobile device and attachments if necessary..
Whatever the key name I forget which one, but yeah, somebody referenced it above...it is HKLM without the Software...I accidentally put that in...
thanks for your info.
actually I renamed the new-created "Storage Card" to "Storage Card1" then after a softreset there comes a true "Storage Card" and so I delete "Storage Card1" and no more try~~~

I tried that, but after reboots if did it again...maybe I can delete now and see if it sticks, but I thought I went through that.
Thx
Here's the problem that you are having. When you set save to sd, at startup your sd card starts too late in the startup process so a new storage card folder is created and that is always named storage card. The only solution is to delay the mail check and save at startup.

No, my solution works fine, let it create the Storage Card folder, then reboot the device with the card out and rename it to Storage Card.bak, or something.
Then, shut down device, put read SD card back in, leave the old .bak folder in along with your card, it won't do it again across reboots, working fine.
Again, I had to leave the Storage Card.bak folder on the device now, but no big deal, there is nothing in it but some folder and takes no spaces, it is just a holder that the device is looking for.
Thanks

1) In POutlook Mail, go to Menu, Options. Last Tab, Storage. Turn on the store attachments on storage card option. Reboot of device might be required.
2) Using Registry Editor go to:
HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings
Add the new Value:
"PropertyPath" value="\Storage Card\Mail" datatype="string"
You will see the "AttachPath" that it put there already when you enable attachments though POutlook.
3) When restarting device, it might lock up and create a "Storage Card" folder on the device because the mail starts before the SD card. Your Storage Card will show up like "Storage Card1" or something.
If that is the case, just pull your SD card out, get it booted up, and rename the "Storage Card" folder to "Storage Card.bak"
Then, restart the device and put your Storage Card in before it reboots, it should then not create anymore folders.
Just leave the .bak folder there, it has nothing but some empty folders in it and doesn't waste space.
Mine works fine with this method putting mail and attachments on the storage card, many reboots, no problems now.
Good luck.
Works for me
This works for me. The only thing I had to do was go and delete all the old mail from the application dir and resync my exchange account.
Really bugging me!
Don't know why mail to SD setting is acting up now, before I was able to redirect it to my SD car in \Storage Card\My Document\My Mail\Inbox and \Storage Card\My Document\My Mail\Mail Attachments easily ....without a hassle with the new Storage card popping up...and I done this so many times ...suddenly after I install net front on SD card and new storage card pops up and my SD card is name Storage Card2 ....I try all the methods in this thread ..and none work for me. Anyone have another method, gosh was I lucky before...should have backup and wouldn't have to go thur this hell.
Hope to see another new solution. thanks your input.
a cab file for this
IS there a cab file for this?
cab file would be great now we just need someone with the time to create one,
hint hint anyone???
Storage Card - need to make sure nothing needs it at boot, or when it wakes up.
I've tried the "Storage Card.bak" route and it didn't help at all. Everytime my 8125 wakes up, or everytime it does a soft-reset it creates a new "Storage Card" folder before mounting the actual card. I end up with "Storage Card", "Storage Card.bak" and "Storage Card2"...
So, I discovered that if I have POutlook on the "Today" screen (someone sent me a note about this - so thanks to whomever that was!), it is the culprit. I have to remove "Messages" from the Today screen (not Calendar!), and it will stop doing this "create the folder before mounting the SD card". (I find this a _BUG_ in WM5 and WM6! The idea that external storage is mounted _after_ it starts up everything that might need it is idiotic.)
Also, I found that if you install Windows Live - you will have to re-flash the device in order to get this back to the way you want, since WL automatically starts putting stuff in the "PropertyPath".
If one of you dev gods have an "in" (contact person) at Microsoft, perhaps you could mention that this is a HUGE PAIN to their customers. (It also has to be an issue for phone manufacturers, who are probably constantly dogged by trying to shrink ROM images so that their customers can fit something useful in the remaining space.
(This reminds me of the old DOS/Windows 640KB limit.)
ok my question is you guys talk about using poutlook and sync what if i get my emails from comcast exmp.
i created a new account on my phne with comcast.net email
i get my emails by clicking send or recev and it logs me in and pulls it from server to my phone. now how can i get it to save on storage i read this thread but still confused.
so i went into
HKLM\System\Inbox\Settings
Add the new Value:
"PropertyPath" value="\Storage Card\Mail" datatype="string
also add the attachpath value \storage card\mail\attachments
and it did not create another storage card folder
looks like it worked

[Q] Android SD Navigation - How does this thing work?

My SD (the one on the Android, not the SD Card, why the hell did they name it SD?!) is full of junk. In fact, it comes with a load of junk by default.
How do I:
1. Get Android to not pull videos, pictures, and music from games? My gallery, video player, doubletwist, etc is full of stuff like that.
2. Know what I can delete and what I can't? I'd like to clean this place up.
3. How do I find stuff? I mean, is it up to me to make "Music" "Pictures" "Videos" folders for my own sake, and Android just looks everywhere and grabs it?
4. How do I go to my SD Card? In fact, I am 100% sure my SD card has two auto-assigned folders on it and nothing else. I have no idea how to access it or put things on it, and I am also sure my phone does not care that it exists. Obviously my phone's SD has plenty of memory on it, but I don't know why there is even a SD card slot. I was thinking of copying some files onto my SD card to put onto my friend's Android phone, but I am also positive I'd have no idea how to perform what should be a basic task.
So, help me out. What am I doing? And, what apps would I need for question four, or just file browsing apps in general.
I'm confused about what this topic is about.
All the words that would describe what he is talking about are replaced with junk and stuff.
.___.
edit: The captivate assigns the internal sd card as SD:
Delete the "junk"

A search would have answered your questions. your SD card memory is the phones main programs memory. IT is where alot of your apps store the data. You can use many apps to as a file explorer it even comes with one. Its called My Files. I use Root Explorer which allows to access Root files and make changes to them. The sd card slot is for....wait for it.......More memory. As for it not seeing the files. there are a few music apps that let you set the folders it scans. Power Amp is the best at the moment IMHO. You can also put a file in the folders that you dont want scanned named no media, (with root explorer you can copy one of these files from the root folders if you can make one.)
with pre existing folders (for apps and such)
create a "new file" in it named " .nomedia " with the . (preriod)
this can be done with root explorer or in windows. create blank text document rename to .nomedia with NO .txt then copy and move to folders.
nothing in that folder or sub folder will be included in media scans
or if it is a personal folder you are creating name it starting with a . (period)
and ya internal SD gets messy. Use external for your files to keep organized!
Wouldn't my SD card (even if it is SDHC) be slower? DoubleTwist is already inexcusably slow with my files on the SD itself, what would it be like on the external?
And yes, I know what the SD is, I was just asking why it was named that.
Bumping this because I am curious about any speed differences, and because I would like my SD Card to matter.
