Help: Magician backlight tweak?? - JAM, MDA Compact, S100 Software Upgrading

Hello!
I've got an I-Mate Jam and I love it to bits.
Only one thing annoys me! The backlight is far to dark!
I've noticed that when I switch the camera on, the backlight is boosted a notch even though it's on full blast!
Is there a tweak allowing me to make this boost constant?
Cheers, HelterSkelter

there's another thread on this:
AFAIK, no, there is no tweak (so far!)
V

Hi I have a similar problem! After my magician came for repair, the backlight is constant and I can't change it... I move the slider up and down, and it only has an off or on position..? anyone??
Thanks
PS: yes i want to boost my light!

Screen Brightness hack?

hi guys,
just got my Dopod 838 pro(TyTN)...and I love it. however I notice the screen brightness is not as bright as my o2 atom. even with the brightness turned all the way up in the settings. however I noticed that when I press the camera button the screen brightness increases for a second (to the same as my atom). but the when I close the camera the screen dims back again. seeing this lets me know that the screen does have the capabilities to be turned brighter then is allowed through the settings. does anyone know a reg hack or a trick so that I can turn the screen brightness up? does everyone else notice that the screen brightness goes up when the camera button is pressed? or is this a hardware issue? thanks for the help guys!
I've not tried it on Hermes, but VJLumos II takes advantage of the extra brightness that occurs when the camera is enabled, to make a super brite screen. This works on the Magician, and can be enabled on the Universal but not disabled until soft reset (I've not been motivated to finish writing the Universal's version.)
If the Hermes exhibits this same characteristic, VJLumos II might work on it. Give it a go and let me know.
V
Hi Vijay555 yeah i was actually on your site and ive heard alot about VJLumos II. But I thought it was only compatible with the Magician. Do you think there is any risk of it Hard resteting my 838pro(Hermes)? Anything else i should know before installing it? Does it work 100% correct on the magician? Please let me know!
Thanks!
Works 100% on the Magician, and the active part works on the Universal.
Basically it mimicks the camera and causes it to be activated, causing the extra brightness.
I can't guarantee 100%, but say 99% that it can't hardreset your device (without having the device in front of me I can't say...)
It'll either work or not work, it shouldn't interact with anything else.
I'd be interested to get a Hermes rom dump at some point to see what it's like. It's a great piece of hardware, I'm wondering how to get one now I've jumped ship to the Mio!
V
yeah the hermes is great. Ok well i guess i will be the guinea pig and test it out on my device...haha i hope nothing happens. Ill install it in a few hours and let you know what happens. If i need to remove it will it just uninstall?
By the way is the a reg hack that can do this also?
There's no registry setting I know of that will do this, but there might well be; however, as I said, VJLumos does this by interacting with the hardware in an unexpected way, so it's unlikely to be replicated in the registry.
I think you can run VJLumos in stand alond mode, without installing (which will cause it to be enabled every time you switch on). Just run it in stand alone mode to test it out.
V
Hi all,
I'll also try with Wizard, should I or not?
Any effect on battery life. I mean is it more than max of hardware brightness

Hi Vijay, what do you mean run it in stand alone mode?
fordcan: I'm sure that it doesn't work on the Wizard, if it did then I would have written VJCandela for it as well. Not right now, and not until I get a wizard in my hands (all you new Hermes guys, if you find yourself with a spare Wizard, I can give it a good home!)
phame: if you just double click on the VJLumosII icon, it'll enable superbrite once. If you click on the -install icon it will try to enable it every run.
Like I said, it's not written fully for WM5 yet, because I never used my Universal as my main phone, and frankly the screen was bright enough. The magician benefited from it, but hopefully any HTC phone that exhibits the curious camera loading/screen brighter thing might benefit from it.
However, for now, as I said, it's not fully debugged for WM5. But test it, and if it works, I'll try to make some time to fix it. The problem is that it will only work the first time, not every time you run it. Hopefully easily fixable.. But it won't do any damage.
I presume it will drain the battery faster, since screen is brighter, but if you use it in bursts or recharge daily, it shouldn't be an issue. I never used my Magician without it, and it was fine after 1 year.

thanx for the reply,
I a bit confused; you are telling "doesn't work on Wizard" and at the same time "any HTC phone that exhibits the curious camera loading/screen brighter thing might benefit from it " Wizard got this..
curiosity kill the cat  Better try and see issue
fordcan:
Sorry, it might benefit from the technique, not necessarily this version.
Like VJCandela, I have to have a Wizard in my hands to experiment with the camera driver. It'll be easy to write once I've got the device in my hands, but I can't test it.
It shouldn't do any harm, since it'll probably just not be able to find the correct camera driver on the Wizard. But give it a go and tell me if it does anything.
I never knew that the Wizard has this screen brightening effect
V
Absolutely not working.. tells; "Can't load Superbrite Libraries!"
Anyway "Trying times are no time to quit trying"
Ok i downloaded the cab file, copied it to my memory card and executed the file. And it worked perfectly instantly the screen brightness went up. And it didnt seem to be causing any type of slow down or problems.
When i click the camera button i just get an error message which sais "the camera app is already in use". But luckliy no soft reset.
However i couldnt find how to turn it off. It doesnt show up in the list of "running programs"
so far the way i launched it was by just clicking in the icon. Can you please tell me how to do the "-install" thing you were talking about?
and how do i shut it off if i want to use th camera? At the moment i can only do a soft reset for it to turn off.
Thanks!
You should have a bunch of shorcuts installed in yor startmenu.
Launching VJLumosII with parameters -off will disable it, clicking -install will install it so it's run every time it's switched on.
However, I've not tested the -install option on WM5 so let me know if it works appopriately. I'll get around to reweriting it eventually.
V
i tried clicking the short cut to shut it off. But i get an error message saying something about the application being corrupt. So to diable it i still have to soft reset. Im scared to install the app in fears that the remove shortcut may not work
Also ive noticed the battery drains about 30% faster with the app running.
any ideas?
As I've said, it only half works on anything other then the Magician. I'll fix it sometime as a priority - I just got a Hermes, and have to say that the screen is a bit "meh", not as bright as a Mio 701 or Magician. Washed out colours and poorer viewing angle. Superbrite is necessary, not optional
V
I've just switched from a Prophet to Magician. Couldn't stand the slowness of WM5, especially with some big database software I use. The only thing I miss is the Prophet's screen brightness (OK, battery life was great too) so I was really pleased to find vjlumosII. The only downside I've run into is that it adds about 3 seconds to the power up time when I press the power button on my Jam. I've not seen this mentioned elsewhere. Is this a normal effect of the software?
Do you see the slowness on the Magician or the Prophet?
On my Magician I never noticed it.
I just wrote a new kinda app yesterday for low level hacking, and will see if I can apply this to VJLumos. Hopefully some new ish updates coming soon - however, I am using my time well I hope. I'm writing a new website, hence the slow progress on programming.

For the Hermes, see here:

Vijay,
I've only used vjlumosII on the Magician. The Prophet is the first PDA/phone with a screen that was as bright as I'd want, so I never tried vjlumosII on it.
The delay on my JAM (the 128MB RAM version) is not subtle. It takes a full 3 sec for the phone to come on after you press the power button. The same thing happens if you push any other button to turn on the phone. There doesn't seem to be any delay in the phone coming on if it is awakened by recieving an incoming call. When I turn off vjlumosII the power up delay disappears.
Also the screen brightness initially doesn't come on at maximum. It takes another 2 seconds to boost up.
Thanks.

Hi everybody, is there any way to change either the length of vibration cycle, or the intensity of it? (I assume either speed of the motor or legth of the cycle) - It vibrates so much U can hardly call it "silent" mode anymore ? thx. (Treo 750v WM5)
I had smae problem i ware playing with notification settings and did somthing (i dont know what) but now it vibrate for less then a second it realy annoying.
Not much of a help though... anyone else has an idea? thx
search "treovibe" on google
Thx, found. Bottomline is: always try google first ...

Disable the bluetooth light

Is there a reg hack to turn off the blue bluetooth light? I hate having 2 flashing lights on all the time (One blue and one green).
Thanks
I have installed Microsoft voice command 6.1 french and then the blue light turned off!
it is expensive to turn a light off but it works
(by the way if any body knows how to turn it one I'll be pleased to know...)

I will be please to be able to turn the green flashing light off too. I know that the flashing light indicates that the phone is on, but still annoying specially at night (please do not tell me to turn the TC upsidedown)
LOL, that's funny... Any way there has to be a way to turn them both off
There is a way. You know how to do a soft reset - you put a small thing in the reset hole.
If you want to disable the lights, do the same thing, but instead of putting a small thing in the reset hole, you put it on the light. You need to press really really hard... ;-)
However, there is no way to get them turned on again...

Thanks for that awsome fix...lol however, I would like a little less violent solution....
This could be done in some devices with Tweaks2k2 .NET (http://www.tweaks2k2.com/portal/staticpages/index.php?page=20050224182009983). I don't know if this could work for Polaris too.

No I have this program, tried this first. I doesn't work.
Anyone have an answer?
Try this
Try this one
It works great on my TC. It's written for the Kaiser but also works on the TC. I've turned off all my LED's except when I've missed a sms or call. It's in Dutch but the interface is pretty clear so I don't think you'll have any problem controlling it. If so let me know.
The only downside with this program is that you can't control the WLAN LED. If you turn off the Phone LED (green flickering) the WLAN LED also gets turned off. Another thing is that the orange LED doesn't light up anymore when you charge your device. Hopefully someone will write a similar program especially designed for the TC. But apart from that it's a neat little program.
Cheers.
Found a fix! This program is awsome. It is for the Tilt, but works great on my TC!
Thanks for this.
It seems to be written for the Kaiser and says that its freeware as it installs.
Seems to work fine on my Orbit2.
I've now turned off both my lights as default - they should illuminate if I miss a call / get mail etc.
I do some work with User Interfaces for avionics.
Cardinal rule - "flashing lights are an exception, not default mode of operation".
ALL flashing lights
Thanks for this, works a treat on my Touch Cruise / Orbit 2
Maybe this link deserves its own post... took a while to find it

Hmm! That explains why my BlueTooth LED stopped working - I recently installed M$ VC too... Weird.
Anyhow - while you've found a solution to turning off you LEDs, I thought I'd suggest another thing worth looking at for controlling them, for future reference - nueLED... It lets you redirect different LEDs. Still won't turn my BlueTooth LED back on though!

HTC Diamond + bluetooth headset wake/sleep problem

Hi @ll i just bought a samsung bluetooth headset for my diamond and i already have a problem with it, it seems to be on my diamond self
whenever i use the headsets controls to forward track/ skip etc it wakes up the phone, and thus also the touchscreen, in my pocket
quite irritating
is there a way to fix this?, is this a known issue and can i return my headset based on this flaw ?
or must i wait for HTC to make a fix of some sort :S
same problem!
I have the exact same problem and know a friend of mine does as well.
If someone could fix this incredibely annoying issue... that would be GREAT
sooooooo, someone? pleeeaaaaassssssssssssssse!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=422871&highlight=sensorlock
it`s really a searchin` thing
sensor lock is fine and all, but this doesnt eliminate the problem that the display turns on and uses up the allready weak battery...
exactly.
And I don't want to be rotating my phone everytime I want to do something with it (tiny hands)... the thing will probably drop.
i "found"that igo navigator 8 has the same issue when minimised
i can deal with igo, because the safe mode setting disables touch screen
I've solved the problem. It's one key in the registry. But I'm not really sure which one, because I've changed a lot of them.
I think, it's this one:
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ControlPanel\Phone\sleep] change to "1"
after this change, the phone will stay sleep as usual
So does anybody have a fix for this yet?
ps. the regkey doesn't exist in my phone.

Happy with my HTC TP/Raphael!

Hi Guys,
I now own a HTC TP/Raphael for two weeks and am extraordinarely happy with it! I waited about 1.5 years to finally find a machine that mets all my needs and wishes.
I want to thanks all you guys, because I read this forum months before I finally bought the thing and was very pleased with all the info, pro and con, you all posted!
I bought mine in Holland with Tomtom v7 bundled.
Common problems I faced and how I solved them:
1) Problem: Slow GPS Fix (10 min). Solution: Found Quick GPS pre installed on my device, ran it and have a fix now within a cool minute.
2) Problem: HTC picks up or cancels incoming call in trousers pocket. Solution: Installed AnswerDisabler 0.5.1 Thanks to the programmer! It works a treat!
So now I can clear my jacket pockets of the weight of a huge HP iPAQ 4700HX and my compact camera Canon IXUS 850. (The latter I still take with me on occasion, but for the odd picture opportunity, the HTC suffices.)
I'm wowing my friends on a regular basis with this device, showing of the nice TF3D interface and G sensor app's.
Okay, I might still have a small inconvenience left, but I will post that in a separate thread.
Thanks again and keep up all the good work!
Emiel Ratelband?
I too am a happy customer with my Touch Pro.
I faced a few slightly different inconveniences:
1. The Web Browser tab in the TouchFlo does not display the graphics. This is the screen where the YouTube icon. I've update the graphics with GIF files of a few of my more common websites and reduced the size of the images. Works after a power down but not after a reset.
2. Battery performance is still not as good as I was hoping but definitely better then my Dopod C730. I've already done the performance tweaks and this has indeed improved the battery performance. I use the device with push mail for my office email. I also enable 3G and disable Bluetooth.
3. Screen brightness under direct sunlight is bad. Can't do much about that one.
4. The TouchFlo sometimes "hang" with a black screen or frozen home screen. Haven't figured out why yet.
Other than that, I love my new toy.
I am another happy customer and the issue of the battery I dont have actually... I am in Hong Kong and bot the TP at the sole authorized retailer and not a parallel import so therefore my TP is branded which is a pain in the butt. I don’t want to flash the ROM as I’m a newbi at WM stuff so if I screw anything up, I’m dead. Also I don’t know how to get into the registry even if I install Total Commander and stuff… but back to your question….
My beef:
1) I don’t use the TP 3D and I use the standard WM screen. However, ONLY the browser Opera has the auto rotate function unless I slide out the key pad…. How annoying is that? I have found a forced rotate application which is SPB Phone Suite but I don’t want to use this as out of this entire program I only want is the force rotation function… so I’m still searching if there is a app to just force rotate the screen.
3. You can actually, if it is on auto adjust brightness. Turn it off because it toggles between 30-70% which means that you have 30% more brightness if you adjust it yourself with the slider.
@sgsdebruin: No, no Emil Ratelband. (Dutch happy-guru a few years back). Just thought it would be polite to let all the people, who spent time to do this stuff for the community, know that it's appreciated. I know it works for me if others are being appreciative so...
@kelvgoh:
1) No problem for me.
2) Battery performance could be better, yes, but I'll have it on the usb a lot anyway for synchronizing with Outlook at work, so it's not so big of a deal. I'm also thinking that battery life of a device is inversely proportional to the screen resolution.
3) Screen readibility in sunlight. Yeah, that's not so good. The screen of the device is not anti-reflective at all, what makes it really sparkle if you haven't reflections in it, but if you do, then it's bad. (See also some of the Youtube video's of the HTC. In many occasions you can clearly see the camera it's filmed with.)
4) I lucked out there too. No problem.
Fact remains that some HTC TP do have weird problems (1 and 4) and others don't. You can read more of those freak problems on the forum. It looks like the production process is not making consistent devices every time.

Thanks for the tip. Unfortunately, that also increases the battery usage. Sigh, can't have everything.
