Hi guys,
I am considering to upgrade to the latest rom. Before I start with the procedure I have just one question:
Is it possible to backup te device before upgrading with ActiveSync or sprite backup and restore after the rom upgrade?
I did it with Sprite Backup, no problem....
soft reset/backup/update ROM/reinstall sprite backup/restore
Many people think it's not a good idea to restore after a ROM-upgrade. The ROM-upgrade upgrades several (system)files, and with a restore you overwrite them with the original files!? That's the theory I think, I don't know if this is true...
That's true, but Sprite backup has a special feature called 'Device upgrade mode' to
Safely restore across ROM upgrades or to different models of device

I used it on my S100 and everything works fine.... for the moment...
you could also do a selective restore and choose not to restore windows folder, but do restore everything else?

After getting a license for 30 dollar I used Sprite backup to use a full backup and a full restore using the option "Enable Device Upgrade mode".
Worked perfect for me!
Another nice thing about Sprite backup is the scheduled backup function.
Happy 4 you, then

Greets,
The AT&T Instructions on the installation of the new Tilt ROM indicates that you can do a sprite backup, and then restore it afterwards.
I can't get my head around how that is possible (and if its a good idea). Doesn't Sprite Backup backup the registry too (It HAS to ... it maintains installed program settings), which would then unback registry settings which may, or may not, be applicable to the new ROM.
Has anyone actually done this?
Thanks!
You can restore PIM data with it without problem.
If you go to the options, you can also select Upgrade Mode in the advanced feature & that will restore everything it can without overwritting ROM files.
Ok, I just got my replacement Tilt and now I have to send it back because it has hardware issues. I was wanting to just save everything I have on there so that I don't have to set everything back up again when I get my new one. (I'm not using the default ROM)
Should I follow the Kaiser ROM Kitchen Tutorial or is there a quicker way to make a backup so that I can re-install it all. I couldn't find anything else, but I didn't think it would hurt to ask.
Thanks
i'm going to go ahead and not insult you, noob. Had you done a google search for "ppc backup" you might have found software such as sprite backup. I personally use it and i like it. I think it was included in some ROM or other.

Just make sure you install the same ROM as your current Tilt on the new device. Use Sprite Backup as the previous poster suggested and do a backup to SD Card and then restore. Create an .exe of the backup so you don't have to install Sprite backup to restore.
I use Sprite Backup and it works well for me. Saves a lot of time and effort. Just remember to use the same ROM.
Thanks guys, one last question - does this also save the programs I've installed (IE HTC Home Customizer, w/ all of the downloaded info?)
Yes it does.

Actually, I restored a WM6 backup in WM6.1 (upgrading because of the drivers) Sprite backup has a warning, etc. I just restored everything, except the Windows folder and I was fine. Sort of. Some things were broken, so I've been spending some time reinstalling cabs.
Hi
I'm having a big problem restoring backup data on my Touch Cruise after installing the Windows Mobile 6.1 upgrade.
I took a backup before the 6.1 upgrade with the Sprite Backup Software that was with the phone when I bought it, but when I try to restore the data, the phone just freeze - and it seems that it is because the original Sprite Backup software doesn't work with 6.1.
I have then tried to buy the newest Sprite Backup Software (version 6.5.2), because it was supposed to have a feature to backup acros different ROM types. But when I find the backup file from the original Sprite Software tool, I get the message "The selected backup file was created using a different version of the Sprite Backup (1%) and is incompatible with your current version (6,5,2, build 102).
So in other words, I can't use the original provide backup tool to restore my data from windows mobil 6.0 to 6.1, and I can't use the new software either.
What can I do to restore that data? There have been no warning on the HTC website when downloading the ROM upgrade that you couldn't restore the backup data - and I'm using the backup tool that was on the CD, when I bought the phone.
I surely hope that there is some way to restore that backup data, because it contains important information about contacts and settings. If there isn't a fix then I would like to know how to restore Windows Mobile 6 on the phone, because this seems to be the only version that allows me to use the Sprite Backup tool to restore my backup data. But I don't know if that is possible (and if there is a danish version of the old WM6?).
Any help restoring the data or getting back to WM6 is VERY appreciated. THANK!
PS: I'm not very technical, so please "spell it out for me" what to do
Download the original WM6 rom, then run PPC Pimbackup to back up your PIM information, then install the WM6.1 rom, then restore the data using Pimbackup. (Free)

DOnt Panic is correct in what he says, but for your future info, you cannot restore backups from one rom to another, that is 6.0 to 6.1 or whatever. It is not the fault of sprite backup so get your money back
Downsoad official 6.0 rom from HTC (or the rom u had before). Restore your backup (this will now work with ur original rom).
Once you have all your info back, download PIM Backup from here. Backup your contacts, emails files etc but NOT system settings.
FLash your new rom and restore backup using PIM backup and happy days
PIM backup is good for this. Make sure you keep ur sprite backup u did safe, it is a good way of getting back to a good working place.
WHen you have your new rom clean, with contacts, do another backup using Sprite and keep it, clean backups done just after a flash (once contacts are on etc) are a handy tool to keep on sd card, saves doing a hardrest!

timmymarsh... Just to point out that SPB Backup has a very clever backup process between ROMS. I used it between WM6 and WM6.1 (OK so it's not the best) but between std wm6.1 and custom it worked a dream...

Hi to all,
A small question.
I'm using PPCPimBackup to backup my phone to the MicroSD card.
If I backup the whole phone (including all the files), will the restore option be enough for me to come back to my current status if I hard reset?
I'm talking mainly about all the registry tweaks I've done and all the small settings. Is the registry located in a file, like on WinXP?
Hope I've explained myself properly...
Cheers!

Nope. PPCPimBackup only backs up the categories of "personal information" you select. A few examples of programs to do a "full backup" are Sprite Backup, SPB Backup, and Resco Backup. None of these are free but all offer trial periods so you can decide which one you feel most comfortable with.
I've been using Sprite Backup for quite a few years now, first on a MotoQ and now on my Touch Pro.
HTC Data Backup
Today I saw at pocketnow.com that HTC has it's own Data Backup tool where you can do entire phone or only PIM database backup. Check this link.

I have been using Sprite Backup. I downloaded this HTC data backup, but didn't test it. So I am now sure how this works when we restore after a hard reset.

That's not tue, actually. There's a "Custom" category where you can choose files and folders for backup...
But my question wasn't if the software can backup the entire device. I'm asking if I restore ALL THE FILES from the device, do I get all my tweaks after a hard reset and a full restore.

Thanks for the link. I've just tested the HTC Backup. It's nice, but one feature is missing - compression of the backup. A full backup of the whole device through PPCPimBackup gave me a 57MB file, and the HTC Backup gives me 124MBs... big difference. Nice try HTC
What is the best app for backing up contacts, text messages, contacts, and, if possible, system settings? I've heard of PIMBackup but I didn't know if it would back up all the stuff on the HD2.
EDIT: I want an app that backs up to the storage card, NOT an online service.
EDIT2: Freeware
Thanks!
Microsoft MyPhone works pretty well for that

I mean an app that backs up the data to a folder on the storage card.
Sprite backup is very good
I've been using it for a long time to backup to SD card. Can set schedules and create auto install backups so that you do not even need it on the phone if you want to recover the backup.
Indeed SpriteBackup is best backup app. Restored backups having all this what you select to backup. If you perform full backup and restore it after new ROM instalation, then you have exactly the same settings, files and other stuff like b4 ROM instalation.
Resco Back up
Been using this for ages.
Very robust and flexible. It has saved my butt countless times.
I have detailed the use and "how to" for a previous post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5993369#post5993369
Have a look. It is a $$ item but you can always go for the trial first.
God Luck

I'm quite sure that it won't be so. If you launch either SpriteBackup or Resco Backup getting a file and then you flash a new ROM, nobody makes sure that the system will work as well as expected. Newer ROM might have different settings or different driver versions and it will be necessary not to overwrite them in case the system gets stuck.
So, if you need to back up, make sure to save and restore all the items which don't affect either system settings or drivers.
I know retyping all the settings gets your goat, but there isn't another way out of it....... It's better off not to make mistakes and reinstall one application or patch at a time.
Cheers
Holly words. I forgot to tell about this. Performing full backup with tool like SpriteBackup is ok, but like you say, if new ROM was added, then when restoring should be selected only data like contacts, calendar, appointments etc., otherwise (when it's just refreshing system with HR, on the same ROM) performing full restore is best choice.
hi
what about spb backup is that any good?
thanks

thanks for reply will check it out.
The same options have SpriteBackup.
I am sure they all are good. I use Sprite Backup. Have backed up and restored many times. Also just upgraded my ROM and then did a restore where the phone was the same as before the ROM update.....except for the new ROM, of course.
Also, Sprite has an HTC deal for 19.95...

I use Sprite and it works fine. I already owned it so
just ported it over from the old phone. Just remember to check your settings before you do a restore and back-up. They seem to change. It also forgets it is registered and I have to re-enter the user name and pass code after a hard reset to restore. The process complete message also is hard to check the box ok. They just need to make the target bigger.
thing to note, before playing with roms, download the latest stock rom update for phone, because you will have to flash it, then use your backup.. you need the rom you used to backup with so you do not mix roms, been there and had that problem, lucky I had my rom on sd card, so what ever your backup tool you need the rom it backed up. also the only thing they can backup is what is on phone, it does not backup the rom install
have used Resco for at least 3 years now, on 2 different phones and across 4/5 rom versions, very good product, I have even restored files on my HD2 that where backed up on my kaiser.
also restores across rom versions on my HD2 no problem (backed up under 1.66 restored under 1.72)
SPB Backup....
I tried Sprite for several months, tried restoring backups, there was always some problem or other, the most common being that after a restore the phone would randomly not switch on, requiribg a soft reset.
I've now tried SPB, and so far, it seems perfect. Also easier to use.
My 2p's worth.
resco backup works fine for me
I use SPB Backup.
- Allows you to do a full back-up including storage card to phone/storage card.
- Allows you to skip previous back-up files
- Can create a stand-alone file
- Can customize restore your full back-up like PIM, Text, Email, Documents, BUT leave out system files when doing a ROM upgrade.
The list goes on and on...
