Odd thought: non destructive upgrade procedures... - General Topics

OK, so here is the story.
I took my P800 on a trip (3 weeks) and left my SX66 (BA) at home. When I came back, the battery was dry and all my data was gone (argh! and no SMS backup! ). I have a complete backup file from activesync that I can put back onto the BA but I was thinking...
I can download the Spec Ed. ROM from the SX66 standardization project (or any other ROM for that matter) and install it on my BA which will have newer software versions (and hopefully more stability) - contacts and dates are no problem - they are synced. I feel REALLY lazy to go back and install all the software from the beginning though. I had a CD of software (dont know where it is now), but I dont feel like looking for it or trying to get things installed from the beginning.
I had a weird thought - why don't companies make the ROM upgrades non destructive? When you upgrade your OS on your computer you are not required to format and install - so why should you do it on your PDA? it makes absolutely complete sense - no?
Secondly I know that WM2005 is not out on the BA yet (maybe even ever ) - but it doesn't hurt to ask... "Can someone tell me if I can download and install WM2005 on my BA?" (if I could - I would not mind reinstalling things lol)
Just my little rant

Why aren't you using backup software. That will backup nightly if you want, so you can recover a system from hardreset in 3 mins? This will also work after a ROM upgrade.
I export my registry (just cus I'm a geek) and backup daily just in case, after I screwed myself re-installing everything after a hard reset
As you can see from the BigStorage hacks, ROM upgrades don't just upgrade what's on the ROM, but can also redefine the memory layout in terms of storage and extended rom. So I guess by default everything gets wiped, in anticipation of that kind of jiggery pockery.

My only backup was activesync
I think I will restore to see what apps I had, then upgrade and reinstall

Do keep frequent backups after that. With a 1gb card, or even Big storage, you can keep a full backup available at all times. Mine's only about 14mb, including Local and Storage backups, and that's with lots and lots installed.

How can I create a "disk image" of my device?

Greetings everyone! First off, thank you for a wealth of information on this site as well as the coolest apps and ROMs. I'm glad I came across this site.
I've been trying out different ROMs by different developers. They're all great! I feel like a dude driving a different sports car every week! My question is, how can I create a "disk image" of my current setup? Is there a program for WM6 like PQDI or Norton Ghost?
Thats a good question... this is what we need... than ill test more roms ^^
This part is tricky.
There are two major backup utilities: Sprite and SPB backup.
Trouble is that while they both create a full backup including registry, messages and apps you can not deploy this backup on a different ROM (specially if it is different AKU version or different OS 5 / 6) without serios side effects.
This is because some internal structures (like PIM.VOL) and registry settings are different in these ROMS.
Thats why it is recommended that you backup your contacts, emails and stuff to outlook then sync and reinstall all the apps on the new ROM.
Alternatively, both apps allow you to manually select what is backed up. You can play with that option to only backup "generic" stuff.
Understood.
What I was hoping to find is a utility that takes a snapshot of my current setup and creates one file, or one EXE. It's kinda like swapping hard drives with each having a different OS's. I'd have one "favorite" ROM though (with my personal settings, including keyboard layout, ringtones, contacts, WiFi key info, voice commands, etc) and if I'm done testing someone else's ROM, I can reload that 'favorite' one to continue on with my day, all with one flash.
problem is that many difference between roms also is what registrys are set to what
so if you take that with you some optimezes could be lost
Really?
I've used an old program called PQDI (just like Norton Ghost) and what I'd do is after doing a fresh load of OS on my PC, I'd start to load some of my favorite software like Premiere (I do video editing) and Sonar (I also do music). Then, I create a disk image of my hard drive. Months later, after installing tweaks and stuff, and if for some reason (and this has happened before) I screw up my registry, get a virus, or my PC starts to run slow because of junk that have collected over the months, I'd reload that image and the very next time I turn on my PC, it would have a fresh load of OS with Premiere and Sonar, and nothing else, it's just as if I had bought a new computer.
I was hoping it would be the same on my 8525. There is a feature right now called "Clear Storage" (installed on every WM device) that clears up every things and reloads the ROM. But that erases all the tweaks you've done and starts you off with a fresh load of ROM. :/
Ok, there is one thing you don't seem to be clear on:
On PC stuff you install and OS all can be treated the same because they all reside on an HD and if you can take and image of that you can restore it all whenever you want.
But on devices like the 8525 this is completely different. The ROM on each device is stored and encrypted in a different matter, and needs to be written in a special way so there can be no "generic" tool for ROM flashing. This is also why there are no apps that take complete image of a device (ROM + user apps and data).
Thanks for the clarification. It would have been great if there was, huh? That would make beta testing and reporting much more efficient. Oh well. I'll move on. Thanks again! (Hmm...now what ROM should I try next...)

Reflashing Phone - what are your essentials?

Just curious what peoples essentials are on this unit?
I have been having problems with my handset for some time now, and the memory card *appears* to be corrupt.
So doing a back up of all call logs, messages etc, and going to hard reset.
I will then attempt to update it to 6.1 *wasnt working before*
My Requirements?
Internet
Sat Nav
Games
Clean Theme (like a nice subtle black)
Alarm
Back Up Utility
So What would you guys recomend for the above and what cool features/tweaks can I do with this phone?
Just read my signature.
I think most members here would agree with my choice...
excuse my ignorance, but i see WWE is just the same as an HTC rom with the latest software, is this correct, no other changes?
Secondly, I currently run an 02 ROM, would i notice many differences and how would i go about getting my internet settings (Currently there is an application that retrieves these for me)
Hope you don't mind the silly question - I did read the info but couldn't be sure.
hello
i would say 2 apps i couldnt do without are no longer hosted on here but are g-alarm and g-profile found at www.ageye.de
Also if you want to 'risk' flash (read this) 3LIT3 as i was running the o2 6.1 rom since release till about a month ago and although it is better than the 6.0 rom it is much faster the 3LIT3 rom is superior to the official releases that have been made. Also on the settings front i was afraid of this and made sure i had them before i flashed but then they are installed automatically in customisation (with either officail or 3LIT3).
Sat nav i am guessing that you are using copilot in which case there is a releated piece on how to do this when you download the o2 rom from their site.
Back-up utility i would say either spb backup - but i have heard of problems going over from 6 -> 6.1 roms with using backup software so i say sync up before and copy any import docs that you have on their before you go to flash.
Hope that answers the questions
Well i managed to flash the unit with some interesting measures.
Long story short, I couldn't get into boot loader (Still can't) but when i ran 02 6.1 rom RUU it took it to the bootloader (just vista wouldn't work) so after some hunting i found a driver which worked, well sort of lol.
And then it worked, well for the 02 6.1 release any way.
Tried Co-pilot still having issues,
Tried memory card files, still problems - i think my memory card is knackered and some of copilot is configured there so will explain why this is failing!
Co-pilot was on the rom, presume that if it did load i would have to re-register but think i might opt for tomtom now, was never a fan of copilot.
Other than that i ran PPCPim backup which works really well for calls logs, messages etc. had no critical documents on there but did forget to back up my pictures - oh well no real loss!
Is there a way to format an SD from the device its self?
I have got to say i am NOT impressed with 6.1 from 02 its so slow! my ringtone doesn't even play properly.
Edit jesus this is rubbish, i mean seriuosly really buggy have i done something wrong because they couldnt have put this out as RTM surely?! please some one tell me i am wrong.
My ringtone stutters for goodness sake, i clicked data connection and the connection tab is now overlaying everything and won't go away!?

Hi there, Do a Hard Reset and start over again installing your PIM backup, GPS, any other things you normally use. Your GPS setup files are on the SD card in '2577' folder. Unless you have the CD media do not format your SD card, you will lose your GPS setup files.
The problem is I cannot transfer anything else to the memory card, I cannot install apps to the memory card.
Sometimes it looks like they have transferred but when i open storage card up on the device it's just the normal settings and nothing that I have transferred.
This is limiting me hugely, I cannot put mp3's, mp4's on my phone, I
cannot install games, I am left with just the basics.
Im going to buy an 4GB card today and see if that resolves things

How to backup?

Hello all,
Just a quicky:
What is the best way to backup (and restore) your WM phone?
Imagine that you do an hard reset, and you want to make all the programs, files, etc return to your mobile. Even the same wallpaper
Is this possible?
Cheers and thanks
Luis
Many (Spb Backup etc.. google it) but I prefer save only PIM data because:
1- Make HR to solve SW problems: if I restore all the problems could come back
2- Make HR because changing ROM: some settings couldn't be right for new ROM

+1 on Spb Backup.
I used the trial version and then purchased the software.
Everything is backed up on my pc ready to restore if need be.
Really nice software. Easy to use.
I also backed up my files to my internal storage on my Diamond which is all ready to restore if need be.
The need came up the other day when my Diamond did a surprise hard reset after removing a program.
I did a restore from internal storage and everything came back except 6 speed dials which took a couple of minutes to input.
Just to thank you both.
I did tried it and it works great.
Glad to hear it is working for you
Im a newcomer but i know a bit. Do try SPB Clone. I have used the demo version, but the problem in demo version is that you get a pop-up every half an hour reminding you to buy a full version. But otherwise its a great software. Specially for your needs where you even want the same wallpaper.

ROM upgrade and Backup question.

Hi to All..
Hope everyone is well.
If this question has been answer else where then my apologies to all.
I have an XDA Orbit that came with WM6(prob 6.1) and am wishing to upgrade the rom to 6.5..... I regularly backup the internal memory to MicroSD using Sprite Backup.... I backup ALL internal content so apps, registry and settings etc are backed up. Now my question is this... If I do a rom upgrade can I simply restore the backup file thus returning the Orbit to original state before the upgrade with the change being of cause a 6.5 rom and not a 6.1 rom.. I just don't want to have to reinstall over 250 apps if I can help it....
regards
Lohtse
Hi,
Yes you can restore your apps from sd card after flashing (of course taking out your SD before flashing!)
Just remember that some apps may not be compatible with 6.5, also 6.5 takes a lot of more RAM so be sure you have enough to run all you need.
Hope it helped,
Doing a full sprite restore is kind of a lousy idea, if you ask me, especially when upgrading from 6.1 to 6.5. How many registry entries from 6.1 will either useless in 6.5 or in conflict? Beats me, but it will affect device performance. What's worse, if you're not happy with the new rom, you won't know if it's the rom's fault for sucking or if it's your fault for importing a lot of bad registry settings. In some cases, I've read that doing a full restore locks up the pda, with a hard reset being the only way to get it going again.
You have 250 apps installed? Holy crap, that's a ton!!! All I can say is this: keep your cabs. If you have them all, you can have them automatically installed with sashimi. (If not, you can use sk tools to re-pack any installed program back into a cab.) I guess it may be worth it to try the sprite backup just because of the enormous amount of crap you've installed (no offense, lol). I would actually recommend that you try out Resco Backup. I haven't used it myself (have the demo, though). It allows you to do more selective restores than Sprite. Also, you can unpack the backup on your pc later if you find that you're missing things. It costs about 20 bucks, but it's really the only backup utility that I've ever been tempted to buy. I already own sk tools, and it does a good job of backing up stuff, but Resco sounds pretty sweet.

HTC Touch HD Today Screen

Hi all
i'm new to site and have a couple of Questions ( hope some one can help)
My phone is a HTC Touch HD (6.1)
i want to make changes but still want that safety net in the original operating system.
1/ How do i Copy the OS to reinstall if it all goes pete tong.
As my phone has a habit of crashing once or twice a month.
2/ after instaling programs is it possible to safe them in a way that if i do a hard reset they are apart of the new OS as my default
3/ My ideal home screen is the Touch HD clock with program shortcut icons underneath.
the closest software to do that is the (SPB Pocket Plus)
but i prefer the HTC Look and feel
I am a very very fast learner but am wary to do anything until i know my OS is safe
Be sure to head over to the forum for your device and check the stickies for lots of this info.
In terms of re-flashing to stock, you can download that ROM (check the wiki) and keep it somewhere.
Unfortunately, there is no way to keep apps installed when switching ROMs, but just keep all of your CAB's in one place and it won't take long.
Again, check out the device forum for the Touch HD there are ton's of great ROM's that people have cooked up, get your Hard SPL installed and start checking them out.
Happy flashing!
Hey there buddy...
first, find a copy of the stock rom
create a backup of your phone and calling history using Sprite backup and PIM Backup-using all three (stock rom and backups) to restore your phone to the times.you created the backups. (almost like a system restore on your pc) in case you don't like what you've done...
Regardimg a program being part of your OS (ROM) in case you hard reset, the only way this could.happen is if the 'chef' (person who created the rom) had it preinstalled. A great way to restore programs in one easy step is by using Bengalih Sashimi 8.0 stored in your SD card. Will allow you in one step to reinstall all programs either to phone or storage card without having to soft reset every time. Of course, your cabs need to be saved in your storage card. It's quite easy
Check out the HD (Blackstone Wiki) as it has tons of info...any questions, simply post in these threads....
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=451
thank you all for the info .
am about to take the leap of faith and instal Hard SPL
