Is 3G software or hardware? In otherwords, Can a GSM PDA phone edition be converted to 3G? If 3G works with GPRS, why not?
Therefore will we soon see a 3G SD card similar to a Wi-Fi card?
Is there a XDA or i-Mate 3G on the cards any time soon?
Thanks
calli
3G or UTSM is a new network the name is because it's the 3th generation of wireless phone networks
the first ones were analog much like directed walktalky's really
2th one was gsm and CDMA
.....
so no it's not software
it operates on a different frequency band
and yes 3g phones are backward compatible so they also works
when there is no 3g service reach
this is the upcomming xda 4 device which support 3g
http://www.edbpriser.dk/Listprices.asp?ID=94253
what 3g really offer that 2g dont is
video phonening
and much much faster datatransfers

Hmmmm...that looks like a printer to me
I have a 3G data pcmcia card from Orange and I have also tried Vodaphones one.
I'm not impressed with the speed.
It keeps being touted as "broadband for your phone", but it's nowhere near there yet. I have yet to see it reach ISDN speeds.

Wats up with gsm 850 ? Is it like diamond or it is true quad band?

It has 850 but will not use the US 3G networks (set for ASIA/EUROPE) unless you get a US version (not out yet). So it's quad without 3G (you do get EDGE though)
so
so its quadband gsm and dual band hsdpa for euro/asia?
I think it does GSM850 but not UMTS850. Is this correct? Now, my question, is UTMS only used for data and GSM is used for voice? My immediate answer to this would be no, UTMS (W-CDMA) is used for both.
Yarr.. is this a hardware thing or a software thing?
Software

I think Software - I saw a registry edit in the tweak thread. need to go find it again
850 adding 850 GSM is a software tweak, adding the UMTS bands for the US is not (it lacks the hardware)
I really dont think they would have released this without the hardware. My gut tells me the US 3G will see the light of day...

No matter what you do it wont work , As indian version of Diamond and Touch Pro is not 3G capable devices . Please check below link next to network ( its only GSM /GPRS / GPS ) .

the O1 has 900 / 2100 3G band stock.. is it possible in any shape or form to add a band to it? for example the 850mhz band?? can any developer take a look into this? im already assuming its hardware related but for the many transformations the O1 has gone through im not ruling it out as impossible just yet.. please have a look into it thanks..

Well it's impossible, as in totally. These bands are not like porting ICS over and i guess they may need a change in chipsets or whatever.

2G Network:GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network :HSDPA 900 / 2100
850mhz band is for 2g
U want 2g while u select wcdma only, is it that ?
Why dont u select gsm only if thats the case
Perhaps it ispossible, but you need to flash another radio image for it. Also, your radio must support that frquency.

thats wat i was thinking.. for example: the old motorola l7 stock was GPRS n with sum modifications was about to use EDGE.. the codes for the OS r different but what seemed impossible in the beginning turned out different after trying..
as Cresqo said, it cud b hardware depended n therefore would be impossible.. i personally have no experiencing where Android OS modding is concerned thats y im asking for advice here where experienced ppl are..
Well, say our phone supports that band (which I guess it does), we need to hack the radio image. I have done it on Nokia phones before, but never looked into it for LG P500.

well at least we know it has been done b4 so its not impossible.. wud u take a look into it on ur time plz.. thanks
I was looking into this not too long ago. See the third post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=26608544
P500 uses WCDMA band 8, which is 880MHz - 915MHz. This is determined by hardware filters unfortunately.

Hello,
If my phone supports 2G's GSM 900 isn't it supposed to support also 3G's WCDMA 900 ?

Maybe, maybe not. You didn't say what device you have or what network your device is activated on, that can make a difference.

You're right, it's a LG (AT&T) Phoenix 2 K371 and from what i've read at Qualcomm's site i think i understood that it's modem supports it. I mean at least the antenna for the 900MHz is the same for GSM and WCDMA?
Thanks
