*ORIGINAL TEXT EDITED AND UPDATED*
I have flashed at least half of the custom ROMs released for my G3 CID-unlocked MDA for the last 15 months. It has given me great respect for the efforts of kyphur, faria, molski, anchillus, and others. I have spent too much time, as well, following events here due to the 2 issues that leave my “Wizard” performing less than its best – the radio rom (stuck on 2.19.11 because of missed calls/messages) and battery life.
I do use a few add-on apps, but the main 3 I add to most ROMs that lack them are: batterystatus, todayagenda, and smartskey. I’ve tried placing the blame on battery life on overclocking (via batterystatus, I’ve run mine at all sorts of different speeds with and without cpuscaler, w/wo boost, w/wo extra indicators, etc.). I have updated, removed, reinstalled, backflashed (to ensure a extended rom was present, as many said this would fix the battery life issue) apps and ROMs and nothing has fixed the battery issue. Seemingly ever since WM6, I have been able to get about 24-36 hours out of my phone, about half of what I got before. Last night I went back to Molski’s Wm5 Aku 3.3 Crossbow ROM and over the course of several hours, battery life held firm. Then I added my push e-mail account and synced my mail for the first time (I have a lot of mail) which took like 10-15 minutes, and I dropped 10% of my charge (all levels reported per batterstatus, whatever the bias). Whoa, I thought. Well, I will chalk it up to a squirrelly initial indication of 100% because it sometimes seems to show that when it has just been unplugged from the charger, even if it soon resets to a more accurate value. Anyway, this morning the battery issue seemed to still be a problem. Could it be push e-mail, I thought?
So, I turned off the immediate send/receive, and my battery life improved a great deal. Wait, I thought, could it actually not be push e-mail (which would stink, because I NEED that), but the SD card access when it stores my attachments to SD causing the drain (this was suggested some time ago, but I couldn’t recreate at the time, because the CABs supplied didn’t resolve the issue)? I decided to check. I changed the push settings back to immediate (true push, not SMS triggered) and told the ROM to store attachments in main memory again. And guess what? My battery drain issue appears to be fixed!
I really hope this may be the case. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn that all the power users here are setting the option to store to SD card, or running apps off the SD card.
* MORE UPDATES*
I have been testing this theory for several days, and I can say with absolute certainty that the above fixed my battery issue. Some (WM6 and WM5) ROMs are better than others in this respect, but it is definitely fixed - life improved in all of them. I am currently using Business Edition v2 and it often shows 24mA consumption in BS. I am now seeing consumption under standby conditions of just a hair over 1% per hour, and excellent life even when I am working on it, using the phone, etc. And this is with bluetooth on, push e-mail, etc.
I admit I was surprised at the relatively limited response when I first posted, because this appears to be a gripe for a lot of people. Maybe I overestimated that....if it helps a post here would be nice, if only so others see it and can help themselves.
Thanks again to all the ROM cookers!
This could in fact improve the battery status for many people, and if so congrats on an awesome find.
However I do not have a data plan (being the poor college student that I am), therefore do not use push email. My battery life is similar to yours and I can stretch to maybe near 48hrs if there is very very little use of my wizard....
But I am glad we are on the right track
Zack
This might be it
I never thought of that. You just sparked something though. On both my HTC Wizard and my old MPx200, which has a full size SD card slot, I remember when I let the power completely drain out that one of the first things I couldn't access was the SD Card slot. I remember being surprised when I couldn't find it.
Nice Job! I'm willing to test with you but I will have to wait for two more weeks. I'm a freshman in high school and have final exams.
Good Looks
Good find, I went to do this and it turns out that I had it already set to that . Also, when not using your phone turn the screen off and while you are in call turn the screen off by pressing the power button up top. Also, changing the brightness of the screen has really helped my battery out and the fact that I had a bad extended rom. with all that said and your finding my battery has been great. and AHHH finals week here for me.. I feel for you guys.. Mine start tomorrow! BOOOO
You mean you ever made it more then 24 hours?
My Wizard needs charged every night. It's usually chirping by the time I get home from work
I do have push email set up though so I attributed that to Push.
Battery life is a bit of a bummer on these devices, but that's why I have a charger at home, in the car, and at my office, haha
Push definitely hurts battery life a bit, and that should be expected, but I have been using that for about a year and I really suspect that it is the combination of the original batteries getting "old" at 1 year and this SD card issue that is causing the accelerated decline. I am still optimistic, and my drain is still not too bad, so hopefully I can just learn to live with "fetching" my attachments to SD only when I need to see them (vs. having Messaging pull all of them automatically) to reclaim several hours to a day of battery life.
I can make it 24 hours. Usually at the end of the day say 10 or 11 my battery life is till about 50%. I tested it that night and didnt have to recharge till around 4pm the next day.
I'm sure that vettejock99 is on the right track for some users. My mail program (Xpress Mail) doesn't use the SD, so this wasn't an issue for me - only GPRS usage. When I use the card / applications that access the card, my consumption goes way up. I can see where an app that always runs in the bg and constantly reading/writing to the SD could have a huge effect on battery life, in addition to hardware that's left on - such as Wifi or beam.
-Matt
I don't know what u guys are talking about here. I use the Faria Vanilla ROM and my battery lasts for 96 hours, it's amazing! But when used other roms I never had my battery last less than 48 hours.
One more suggestion about the battry life: always close all active programs. They really drain the battery. I tested it luanching 15 applications at a time, and guess what happened? The battery lost 50% in 15 minutes. So, that might be one of the other factors...
Oh, and here is one last thing. The battery drain is also high when the phone network is unavailable. If u leave your phone somewhere where there is no network signal it will automatically try to search the network every n minutes. So, that also causes huge power drain.
I wonder if this little SD card thing affecting the battery drain isn't noticed when surfing the net. I set the temp folder on the sd card for IE...just a thought

I dunno, maybe (as was speculated some time ago) the power management is turned on/off by one activity such as surfing w/cache to SD and handled differently when writing attachments......
By way of an update, I ALMOST added earlier today that my consumption was creeping back up again, though it still seemed to be about 20% lower (better) than before. I decided to uninstall TodayAgenda and BatteryStatus from the Molski ROM (the versions integrated into it), even though that would make it less desirable to use. The drain still seemed to be creeping up. I was troubled. Then I realized I had installed Today Commander earlier today to ensure I had an extended rom, which I did in fact have (check that box). Well, I installed it to the SD card - so I uninstalled it. And I removed my SD card. And once again, it appears that my consumption is back down. I have used 1% in the last hour, and that is something I have been unable to accomplish in some time. So.....I could be wrong, but I really think this SD card thing has something to do with it.
I remain hopeful this is it, and there is a way we can fix it, or that I can ultimately leave the SD card in at least, and install apps to memory (as there is plenty of room for my needs) and only pull attachments to SD as needed.
Anyone else looking into this?
last bump - updated OP
I thought I remembered seeing a registry hack, or something to that effect, which turned off the polling of the SD slot. I think it was supposed to dramatically improve battery drain times. I'll take a look around for the hack, maybe I'm just dreaming though.

You did, it's out there. Didn't help mine, though. I think that is because the polling does represent some drain, but it appears the actual writing/reading drain is the substantial part.
look here i think i solve this problem
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=1259754#post1259754
increasing paging pool of the ROM causes the battery to roll down heavilly.. this was proven a long time ago in himalaya (xda II) section)..
but ofcourse this isnt only the problem..

i dnt know what my problem is. i charge my fone all night to 100% and take it out the charger only when am leaving for work. when i get on the train its a 40minute ride to work. i only listen to windows media player and by the time i get to work my battery is like 50% or less.
so i bought a new battery today. i will update tomorrow

That is a cause, but as I said, I had an extended rom, not corrupted, and still saw the drain, as have others. So folks need to ensure they have an uncorrupted extended rom, and they need to fix the SD issue in some way or they will likely have battery drain with many ROMs.
It has been quite interesting to watch all those threads for the above topic which of course lead to nowhere so far.
I would not exclude myself of the dispute, however we need to think of the issue in a practical methodology and thus conclude what the facts would lead to.
There has been many complaints and unhappy people about the battery life in Touch Pro and many other models. Just a simple question I ask; What would be an acceptable avarage battery life with one full charge? I am sure responses will vary coz there is no standard expectation nor a universal benchmark for this issue!
Whatever the vendor guarantees as an operating expectency measured in hours, is more or less what you gonna get although many wont accept it, but this is it, you gotta live with it!
There are 1000s of users with 10000s of applications and conditions that have high expectations, but they all get even results, so why complain?
What I am trying to highlight is if many have expressed their dissatisfaction of the battery life, I just say; who's right & who's not? Do we all expect to have the same results? My device may run for 3 days with one charge and couple of calls throughout, others may have tougher uses and expect a battery to last for 7 days in a row with just one single charge?
Just think about it and have a collective understanding.

ya made a wise statement here.....couldn't agree more ...
yep, 2nd that
a wm device drains a lot more battery than other phones because it does sooo much more. and its not device specific either
maybe if someone creat app to change CPU to 200- 300 and so on if don`t used for heavy apps will incress battery life. In the PSP there is app like this ans when I used it only for play music set procesor to 100 Mhz
I have had the phone for a week now. I like it. I like how pretty much everything works. I don't see much of any problem but the battery life. Why didn't they put a larger battery in. My Mogul has a 1650 in it. Yesterday morning the phone had a complete charge. I went to worship and used it very little in the morning. By noon time where I showed the phone off to a friend who is thinking of getting one, the phone charge was down below 50%. It should have been 70 or 80% and no less, IMHO.
I've posted this link before on a different section.
http://www.hardwarezone.com.au/reviews/view.php?id=2726&cid=24&pg=6
I get nearly 4 hours as well if I use mine full on. Tried watching a full length movie and my battery meter shows ~50% afterwards.
I thought OP might be interested in seeing this review.
I don't think it's really an issue of someone being right or wrong. I think 24 hours is just a particular limit for cellphones, and once it dips below that we start to worry about the next time we'll be near a power plug. After all, these are devices that we use on a daily basis.
If the batteries lasted 2-3 days, then it wouldn't be a big deal if we forgot to charge once in a while (late night, canceled flight, forgot charger, etc). But as it is, people are having trouble pushing it past 24 hours even under modrate usage, which means if they miss even one charge cycle, they're dead in the water the next day.
Of course usage is a different issue; but if you start modifying your usage habits in an effort to prolong battery life, that's still the same problem. You could turn off 3G, stop mail checking, always close background apps, etc; but without any of those features you might as well use a regular dumbphone -- no point in getting a device like the Touch Pro in the first place.
Last week we went on a short holiday. Both my girlfriend and I have a TP running RomeOS v1.13. She has a GSM prepaid card and I have a GSM/3G/H card.
Her battery lasted 4 working days occasionally calling home to check on the kids and sending a few SMS messages.
I used my phone to check email and LIVE messenger. My battery lasted no more than 20 hours.
So if you by a full featured phone, just to use it as a basic phone you won't complain that much I think. If like me you want to use a full set of features pffffffff... And if you don't mind I would like to keep it at that
My first serious WM phone (I don't count the ridiculous HP 6315) was the Samsung i730. I am a very heavy user and I got used to charging it in he car & carrying a spare battery in my pocket. If it made it to 6PM without going dead I was happy.
The Touch Pro has the same screaming 528 mhz processor speed, plus a vga screen. If it makes it to the end of the day, then I'll be more than happy (haven't received mine yet, it's in the mail). There's always a trade off for speed and resolution. I'd rather carry an extra battery than have a frustratingly slow processor.
I've had my TP for a week now and with a pretty heavy usage, my messenger is almost always on, some internet browsing and a little bit of monkey island on scummvm, my battery lasts 2 days. I can live with that.

Which Messenger are you using? I'm trying to find a good Google Talk client that won't drain my battery.
The battery should be expected to last a day. Past that, would be nice, but I do not feel it is necessary...
If the phone won't even last me a day (and "a day" for me is 14-16 hours at school and work) then it really isn't going to work for me. I hate trying to search for 5-10 minutes to have the phone plugged in during the middle of the day to try to extend the battery to make it just past that 12 hour mark for me.
The CDMA Touch Pro doesn't seem to do too well. Sitting idle, it had about 40% battery after 14 hours, but then dropped extremely quickly after that... I must have sent 10-12 texts and was in a call for about 10 minutes the entire day, no programs running in the background, only the cell radio turned on.

I agree with you 100% - except here is the problem: the vendor guarantees (well, doesn't "guarantee", but no vendor really "guarantees") a battery life that is absolutely not right.
On the Touch Pro, Sprint says the phone has a standby of 406 hours - that's 16 days! Incredibly misleading, and in my estimation definitely not accurate. That's the biggest problem I have with the whole battery issue.
Also, in comparison, my Mogul was suppose to have 340 hours of standby and 30% less talk time - but my Mogul lasted a LOT longer than this phone. I could talk, surf, play games, and have it still last longer than this phone. That doesn't make any sense.

Alright, alright, alright! Let's not mention the biggest and silliest gimmick PPC vendors made us believe in specially those of high-end CPU ones
I might have been worng in choosing "guarantee", but who says! When you read "Stand-by" I am sure that the vendor wouldn't in gods name mean "with any GSM/CDMA network"! I mean just think about't!! Why in heavens name would they shoot themselves in the foot by committing such a thing
I could defy anyone who would tell me that "Stand by" is a standard by itself! Haven't you read "The above are subject to network and phone usage" in phone specs?
In addition to the above, network signal strength matters and is very fundemental to extend/shorten battery life too!
Whether or not the battery was of 1300mAh or 1600mAh, it is all the CPU power management and I am pretty sure that Qualcomm is unlike the Intel XScale as the olden memories remind me of
Like most of you rightly said; change your habit and the battery life will change accordingly.
Just a last lil thought, why isn't there a quick options made available in the market for a higher amperage batteries? If one would care about the total gram units, then I recommend to live with the supplied battery.
Let's all cherish the memory of the HTC Universal, that baby was a hot long-lusty orgasmic son of gun device ever was.
I feel the term "standby time" has been used loosely, never in working with wireless phones have I found a machine that is capable of being on this long without being charged. Notice the "up to" that is always there on these kinds of stats too. What does up to mean? Probably something to do with turning off all the radios so the phone can't actually do anything, it might as well be off.
No matter what you do, computers require a lot of power to maintain themselves in any sort of "on" state. If there are any background processes happening (i.e. cellular radio sniffing for incoming calls and sms) you are really only burning power at a rate less than that of radios + screen.
Phones consume more power than phones did even a few years ago, hell they consume a lot more. Does anyone remember first-gen digital phones? 2 hours battery life, talk/standby, didn't make a difference. In fact the batteries used in mobile phones have changed (lion/nicad etc) probably a lot less than the manufacturers' ability to use less power to get the job done.
You can always strap on a bigger battery, but then you have a bigger phone, making it even HEAVIER!
Ultimately, as others have posted before me, that when you buy a touch pro, it is because you are looking for all the functionality that the machine entails. If you use all of the functions at the same time you are burning the candle at both ends. We buy a phone with a gps, bluetooth, wifi, 3g, vga screen qwerty, 3.2mp camera, etc because we need (or want) all of these features at the same time. When you are using the gps while having bluetooth on visible, screen full bright, wifi still on and music playing, don't be surprised your battery won't get you through the day.
I think that the general consensus here is that typically we should be able to get about 1 day out of the pro. Any more, we are lucky, any less, you either have a defective unit or you may have unrealistic expectations of the device.
That being said, after a few weeks go by and you find yourself actually being able to put the damn phone down for a while, battery life will seem longer too
My experience:
I've come from an XScale phone, which runs Linux and doesn't have 10% of what Pro does (like GPS, wifi, 3G, SDHC support, VGA screen, G sensor, light sensor, etc.) and even without all that it doesn't have a great battery life. I had to recharge it everyday sometimes, because I had pretty heavy use (especially A2DP audio).
With the Pro I can do that and much more and still get at least a full day of battery, which for me is good enough.
Tell me one device that has the same size does everything the Pro does with better battery life.
Unfortunately we are still to see better batteries, which I've read a lot about, especially that nanowire technology which supposedly makes them 10x better, but until then there isn't much we can do. So I don't think it's fair to blame a manufacturer, HTC or not, for poor battery life, because IMHO they did an impressive job on making such a small device with so much power, and still manage a full day of moderate use.
I find that TF3D is a real power hog too. Although I really like the interface, I am trying a run with SPB Mobile Shell instead
It is 3:30PM EST now, I unplugged the phone after a solid charge at 8PM, immediately changing to SPBMS.
It is now about 20 hours later and I have 63% remaining, that is a 37% discharge. I have been using the phone normally for the purpose of this experiment and normally the phone would be at about 30% remaining with tf3d.
There is a thread about this here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=441767
Hi All,
I'm wondering if besides the GPS, WiFi, 3G and Bluetooth.... the application processor, running at 528MHZ is not a cause for this poor battery life time?
Adrian
The reasons why we read many different opinions is that people use phones in very different ways. I can usually cope with the short battery life but sometimes it is really annoying. It just needs a few hours in a bad coverage area and the battery drains completely. Or an unexpected need for TomTom to make the battery go flat before I get back home in the evening. I used an HTC P3600 (which is a very similar phone from a featureset point of view) for two years and I never had to worry not to listen to music at the airport or on a plane because I wouldn't be able to use the phone after landing. Instead I have had this problem already twice with the Pro... this terrible battery life is really spoiling my user experience with this phone.

Well, as I said in my previous post, discounting the hardware keyboard and the fact that it wasn't a very attractive phone my old HTC P3600 used to do exactly the same things with a much longer battery life.
I know this has been covered in many other threads but they seem to be fragmented into some suggestions for specific problems. Researching, following and applying the information, tips and software some have suggested I am still getting nowhere. My battery dies in a very short period of time - something like 4-6 hours.
I have installated, executed / implemented many of the suggestions and procedures here and on fuze-mobility to extend battery life. These are representative. I think there have been probably more but I cannot remember them.
HTC Power Management
SD Card Battery Saver
Taskmgr - to kill / stop Activiesync (replog.exec) from continuously cycling
Advanced Configuration Tool to turn on and off 3G
Registry Edit modifications on both the Fuze and associated laptop related to Activesync Update cycles
Activesync - added new server, made timing manual, deleted server.
Charging processes - Letting battery run all the way down to below 10%
Lowering brightness on my screen
I have ordered and am waiting for an extended battery for the Fuze.
The only thing I see is when viewing what is executing via the Taskmgr CPU Usage panel, I see that most of the time the Idle process is executing. (75+%). Although I have read some threads where folks have said this is good because nothing else is draining your power, just because the process says "idle" does not seem to me to be doing nothing..it is still cranking through and using cycles to go through its designated activities.
Is there a way to indicate the interval when the idle process cycles?
Anyone have this same situation? Any suggestions?
That sounds very bad. Most complaints are about it being less than a day, noy 4-6 hours.
Have you contacted HTC/your supplier to get a replacement battery?
Also, idle is not a process, it's the absence of a process...
I'm not an expert on the ARM architecture, but idle processes are processes that use the CPU when all other processes are waiting for something or when there are no other processes running. They don't necessarily do anything constructive (they essentially just 'mind' the CPU until another process needs it), but they often feed the CPU with power-saving instructions. In conclusion, ignore it - it's not causing any problems and there's no point in fiddling with it.
That sort of a battery life is absolutely ridiculous, and you've clearly had a good go at increasing it, so I my best guess would be that it's defective.
Thanks for the quick responses.
I would still like to investigate the "idle" process angle. As long as something accesses the CPU, cycles are being executed and power is being used. Depending on what the "idle" process is doing with the 75+% "time" it has control of the CPU lots of power could be being used / drained.
Not sure how to go about this yet but I'm sure there is a way to find out what is going on during the "idle" process time holding the CPU.
If anyone know please share.....
Wow, it seems like the battey life on these things just keeps getting worse and worse. I remember going from the Hermes to the Kaiser and thinking how much worse the battery life was on the Kaiser.
The features keep increasing and batteries are having a hard time keeping up, I think.
there is alot to blame here. the good news there is a fix for almost every culprit.
1st....touch flow 3d. this thing demands alot of battery life. Not too mention its always running. Att has also seem to have added a few things to the touch flo interface that may have had an impact on this as well.
2nd....the applications these days seem to be getting bigger and bigger every few months. its not uncommon to see an app eating up 7 to 10 mb of ram. jivetalk...opera...the new aim??? the thing about this....the more ram an app takes up, the more batt power is consumes.
by the way...this is not a problem native to windows mobile...take a look at Google's g1....the batt life on that phone is even worse than your stock fuze...and after i've been digging through the phone....i found out all the apps are over 5 mb....madness! Also, the iphone has had this problem....and still does. but the iphone doesn't allow for background processing....so large programs running in the background aren't really that much of an issue.
3rd...att! in a noble attempt to cram the fuze with everything under the hood and give it the title it truly deserve (a phone capable of doing everything) they've weighed the os down with crap ware.
4th...the att radio that ships with the phone....its horrid. you'd never belive how much better some of the other radios are vs. the shipped att radio. its almost ridiculous that att would ship the phone with such a poor radio.
5th....htc. The batt in the phone is no bigger than the one offered in the tilt. But lets keep in mind, the same size batt now has to power faster processor....more ram...and a brighter more high res screen. Why they didnt up the power of the batt? who the hell knows...i guess to keep the phone nice a small...but its def a trade off.
I want you to try a cooked rom....try romeos 1.4 or the new proven.....change your radio to the shipped orange....make sure you spl before doing both.
and post back. im sure you'll have a different experience.

I'm going to save you a ton of wasted hours in your life....or at least give you something else to waste those hours on. Stop the witch hunt on the "Idle" process. Open up the task manager on your desktop/laptop and look for the Idle process on there. If you pay attention (and do a little guessing), you'll see that the idle process consumes the remaining percentage of the CPU after the other applications have had their cut, however if you look at the total usage, you'll see that it doesn't include the Idle process.
There's a reason for this. It's lying to you....
There is no "Idle" process, it's just a way for the operating system to indicate how much processing power is not being used by applications. There's certainly something going on during those empty cycles, but it's operations that the core of the operating system is doing. Another poster mentioned that one of the things it's doing is sending power-saving instructions, which is basically true (but it's more in the form of telling the processor that there's nothing to do and letting it decide to save power).
The idle process cannot go away, and the closer you get it to 100% the better (relatively speaking, as it means you're doing nothing with the phone and removed any cool features it had). As long as the phone is on there's going to be at least a trickle of power going through the processor so the core of the operating system (i.e. Kernel) can perform it's necessary actions...just like the brain or heart does in your own body, even at rest they are still working a little bit.
Truthfully, I think you're barking up the wrong tree with your battery issues. I've got a Fuze also, and the ONLY time that I saw the battery die in 6 hours was when I was talking on it for about 3 1/2 or 4 hours in one afternoon. Otherwise, that thing, even on the stock rom, has given me nothing like the trouble your describing. I've flashed NATF's rom onto it (didn't like ROMeOS that much, just felt a little too laggy for me) and the new Austrailian radio .20M1 and the battery life seems even better. I don't think you're doing something wrong, I think you've got a lemon phone. Return it to the store complaining about the battery life on it not matching that of any of the other Fuze's you've seen anybody else using, then get a new one and try that out.
4-6 hours? Consider yourself lucky. I can get that if I don't touch the phone and no one calls. If I use the phone as a normal person might, I can get 2 hours. I don't even consider it a mobile phone. It's stays plugged into something all day.

You have a faulty battery or you don't know how to set up the phone. I'm also using HTC Raphael, and battery lasts 1,5 days with lots of usage. I think that you should search xda for battery tips&tricks, like lowering backlight, turning off WIFI, BT and other. Also, there might be a problem with the ROM and Radio you're using.
The battery was exchanged...twice...the poor battery life was present with nothing but stock apps and all the tips and tricks you suggest were tried, and then some...the problem is endemic with the fuze...I figure as much as I paid I shouldn't have to jump through all the hoops with 3rd party new roms etc. just to get my phone to work like it should...the battery is piece of crap
Hmmm, in that case it could be faulty device - there are plenty of people on Raphael subforum that are using Fuze and battery lasts for most of them 1-2 days.
Whos got Extended battery on there Att Fuze ?
Is it worth the bulk
& which one to get ?

Hey, i have switched my Stock rom to the Energy rom (.sensity version). Phone was taken from recharger around 6:30 and around 15:30 energy has ended. 9 hours while on stock i could get more than 24. During these 9 hours wifi was turned off and backlight set to nearly minimum. I used 3G for around 3 hours and after that i turned it off using comm manager. Is it normal? How much can you get on energy rom? How can i control what applications are turned on and what applications are using internet connection? Maybe there is kind of gps turned on? And i am not sure if it comes to the email that downloads messages.
bumping the thread
I've had terrible battery life with Energy ROMs for the past year or so. Release after release, his ROM never improved and continued to add new but buggy software. The phone would end up warm even when in standby in my pocket or on my desk. It heats up even after resetting the phone and never interacting with it (ie. no apps are running). 3G and wifi are off and the radio and rilphone.dll match. I don't know what causes the phone to heat up but that heat production means the battery is getting drained.
I have happily ditched Energy in favor of Monfro ROM. The phone is now always at a nice ambient temperature, as it should be.
as above test other roms if you still draining battary life real fst then maybe its time to get a new battary. if thoses roms work fine then switch over to them.
also post in Energy roms thread for help.
I had the same problem with the battery life, but with me it was happening in the night, so one time i woke up in night my phone was extremly hot and it had lost 20% battery since 3 hours before.
By that time i used TAEL Rom, I thought it might be the ROM, so i changed it a few times using Energy and other popular roms, but the problem still accured.
Then i change my radio and the problem was gone.
Could be that you have the same problem, but you have to try different things. It could be the ROM it could be the Radio, or it could be your battery.
I would have to agree with LtGenHartman that changing the radio may help or solve an issue. If you have an unbranded and unlocked version of HTC Touch Pro then i would say to find the appropriate radio and flash it (but keep in mind that you can brick your device rendering it useless).
My device is a branded HTC Touch Pro (aka HTC Fuze from AT&T), and since the device is not unlocked I will brick my device for sure. The battery draining is coming from two areas:
1)WM 6.5 does suck up a little more battery life since there are more processes running in the background of the operating system. Devices that do run WM 6.5 natively may not have this issue since it is optimized to run on that particular device. Also, there maybe a larger capacity battery that a device is using so battery drain is no longer an issue.
2) HTC Sense UI does drain more battery. It is a combo of processes running in the background to run the UI. It is also that there are fancy animation like the weather and transitions. Try eliminating some tabs that you do not use (For me I eliminated Stocks, Twitter and Facebook). It will free up some RAM and it processes will decrease. This may indirectly affect the battery life. Try using the standard Windows Default aka Titanium UI to see if there is a difference.
For the actual battery, try draining the battery completely before giving your device a full, healthy charge before you go to bed. I notice a bit of a difference in my favor since I did that a few days ago. I read this will recalibrate the battery giving a more accurate discharge.
When you are not using the internet on your phone remember to switch off all the data radios (disconnect from the data network, switch off WiFi). I think its ok if your device is finding the 3G network but as long as you are not connected to it, no data is being constantly sent and received so the battery life should increase. Try also switching all your apps that do use the internet to a manual switch rather than auto updating.
Just remember the stock WM 6.1 ROM has less processes, TouchFlo3D has less animations and tabs to use and the ROM was optimized for your device. That is why you will be getting the best battery life results.
These are some tips for you to try out, let us know if this help any. I don't expect a massive increase in battery life but some does help and from my experience does go a long way.
Separate issue: I do notice that the battery reader is not as accurate either. I notice that if i reboot the device the battery meter decreases (for example, if i reboot a device with 65% life i notice after reboot it can go as low as 50%). Wondering why that is?
I finally decided I would take some extreme measures to aide the BL of my Androids. I have an HTC Inspire and HTC HD2 with Nexus S Android. The HD2 isn't all that bad...much better BL than the Inspire, but I wanted to apply this measure to both phones. Will it help? Only time will tell.
I started by removing all screen widgets. Then I sorted the screen icons so that a minimum of homescreens were needed...got it down to 2 homescreens. Then I deleted all widgets without apps not able to be opened through an icon. Then I went into Applications manager and cleared and stopped all non-used apps and services. I also deleted all duplicate services such as OEM email accounts and their associated syncing....using add-in apps for them. (example: built-in apps and widgets like Facebook, Twitter are uninstalled or disabled and am using another combining app like Seesmic. Same goes for the email app)
What I currently have is an Android iPhone. I'm using only icons on the 2 homescreens. And this makes me understand why Apple refuses to use widgets and stick with icons...to preserve BL. I hope this will improve the BL of my Androids because it is purely horrendous. And it is horrendous with all Androids I've tried and used.
Until the recently announced battery tech breakthrough is made available, this might have to be how Android is used from now on. But I doubt these extreme measures will actually help.
What is the difference between a widget and an application?
An application is a single, whole program package that is loaded into the phone. Examples would be Tapatalk, the default Calculator, and Angry Birds.
An application can have one or more widgets in it -- a widget is an interactive thing you can place on the home screen. It can give you information, and you can tap on it to change what it says. A good example of that would be Beautiful Widgets, or the little Android guy that tells you about how to use your new phone.

@Marty, how long was your battery lasting prior to the "Extreme Makeover"? Mine currently will last me 2 days. Admittedly, I've not loaded a lot of stuff on the phone yet, and I have the power saver mode start at 70%...but I only need to recharge every other day.
My desire lasts around 2 days with moderate usage. But on a good day (read: many boring moments), it's completely depleted by the end of the day. My biggest battery drainer is whatsapp, if I uninstall the app my battery will last a LOT longer.
If i really need my phone to last for a long time (when Im on a big trip or on a festival) I always use JuiceDefender with a very strict setting. This is a big help, but not for everyday use
whats the point? Where ever you sleep you have access to a plug/usb w/e so whats the big deal ? how hard is it to charge the phone every night? even thought my galaxy s2 hold battery for 40hrs+ i never need that :|
Ive dont the same thing, I also found some build prop and init.d tweaks that improve battery life.
my brightness is always at minimum, i have only one widget,
My battery could last two days BUT i use my phone a lot. like its on for 7 hours with 4.5 hrs screen on.

Hilarious.
ther have been many apps and disucssions on BL. heres some common tips.
screen to lowest brightness possible setting. background data always off unless using market. disable -use wireless networks- options, no gps, no location. also turn off *back up my data*. wifi always off not in use. screeen timeout no more than 2 minutes. turn off animations and transitions. setcpu with moderate settings (if you can do a screen off profile it will be beneficial but beware Sleep of Death.) no live wallpapers. minimum widgets or none. minimum homescreens or 1. startup manger. adfree. location cache app. and battery calibration to get the most juice.
the issues seems to be alot with hardware the Htc inspire and HD2 have 1250 Mah Batteries , which are very small.
If some people are just like me... I can kill at 1800mah battery in 5 hours even at full charge...
I do everything on my smartphone. So anything to save the battery is a good way.
I have the Galaxsy S II and I've managed to drain the battery in 6hours of usage and since I'm not near a power source most of the time then yeah I need all the juice....
I don't sit in an office or am near a power source 80% of the time. I usually carry 2 spare batteries with me and a charger for them just in case.
Cheers! (Extreme power user).

Whats the point??
Here is my daily usage :
Alarm goes off at 6:30am (phone gets unplugged)
Blahblah (at work) reply to emails and messages throughout the day, on twitter A LOT (plume premium)
2 calls approx 30 mins each
Play some games at break and lunchtime (Drag racing KILLS my battery, a bit of plants vs zombies, grave defence HD and maybe some pinball deluxe)
more emails and twitter
another 20min call
a little more gaming while im waiting on customers (1hr or so??)
6pm go home for 6:30pm
BAM! battery is at 10-20% and i need to plug it in again.
this is a typical 12hr day for me and im sure others have longer days and i would appreciate not having to rush home (sometimes) if im expecting a call.
so as far as im concerned anything which will save some precious battery on my devices is appreciated.
btw i have reduced my homescreens to 3 and only have 2 widgets running and that has made a great difference to my battery life (esp. on the DHD)

Basically kill factory and carrier bloatware and you are getting better.
One thing I was amazed about was the eBook reader that comes with our Galaxy Tabs, and suppose others too.. it always working even if you dont have or use it.
And remember, the screen is what takes most out of your BL, always. Lower brightness? Get a better ROM with no bloatware and maybe undervolt the screen.
Homescreens dont change a bit. Widgets do, if they update a lot.. more than that notification stuff do. Like if you use a antivirus or antisomething, just check of notifications.. check of any unneeded notifications.
Vibration theorically is what consumes the most.. but since its not as used as the screen, you dont even compare them. But every little bit helps. Check off keyboard clicks and hepatic feedback - vibrations.
Wifi, bluetooth, data... don't actually consume much.. actually it's better if you leave a service stable on, than keep sleeping and switching it. So leave wifi always on, no sleep policy. But when you go out turn it of so it doesnt keep scanning all the time (unless you want to ).
Just like any PC, the more you install.... Just check what you got going on, learn how to check processes and services that keep on all the time, and there are some utils to help stop some crap from starting up. I use ROM Toolbox and Autostarts.. some stuff get activated just because you plug you device to charge!
DONT use task killers... dont let anything like that keep running... and no, GMail push notifications wont use any batt. Maybe pop/imap emails always pollling will use some.. but probably nothing compared to the examples above.
Cheers for my 2 cents.
EDIT: and after Xmas, remove those animated wallpapers!
Is Juice Defender a task killer? Not really sure what is it but I've been wondering about that.
Juice Defender Ultimate has been giving me about a 1/3 more time with screen on max. Why is my screen on max, because I was trying to drain the phone. It's on about 40% now which is still pretty bright. I wouldn't be mad to get more life but I think 20+ hrs with moderate use isn't bad. I think the most I did was search the net about 4 hours total. But I was also, customizing, so it the screen was lit for a while.
This is a TMO GSII I'm talking about.
There are a ton of things you can do, but the truth of it all is that our 3G/4G radios pull so hard they drain the battery, which is why you were on the right track when you disable active since, Facebook and Twitter.
The main two things I do, is
1. add a widget for turning off 3G or 4G (If its in your area).
2. Installed Startup Manager ( it disables startup programs in the unseen background, (my phone is rooted)).
by doing these two things I am able to get 17hrs+ on a standard HTC EVO 4G battery. Keep in mind the more you use the Internet the more it will drain your battery. So I only turn the internet connection on when I need it or the app needs it.
*I also only use one screen and remove unnecessary widgets but I find that doesn't help the battery life all that much, (my personal Preference)
*When I or my sons game on my phone I put it on Airplane more which turns off all Radios including the Phone (call/text)
*Drawback to turning 3G off, you have to wait a few second for the internet to come back on and MMS won't download through your messenger unless have it one.
I've been off the charge for 8hrs and my battery life is still at 65%
Sorry to be long winded but if I know anything its battery life
Completely agree. What's the point. Either you don't use your phone for ANYTHING, and watch the battery last for 2 weeks (literally), or you use it so heavily that it lasts only 2 hours....
I was sick recently, and as such couldn't use my phone (I couldn't open my eyes without getting dizzy, and even closed.... still was). Suddenly my HTC Inspire 4G used only 20% of the battery in 10 hours. The previous day, heavy mail, "friendstream" (HTC's facebook/twitter/etc app/widget), listening to music (well, audiobooks) for about 8 hours, and I had only 20% left. And i've found that overclocking the phone to 1.3GHz helps more than any other tweak.
Don't get me wrong, I'm obsessive about using my phone *and* getting awesome battery life out of it. But the ONLY way to true "maximize" your battery life is to *minimize* your usage. But then you might as well buy a feature phone.
And I know a few people with iPhones. a 3GS and a 4 and a 4S. They don't get any better battery life than I do. Heck, they get worse. Even under the same type of usage.
For me, the problem isn't the usage, isn't what's running, or what's loaded (but it does help/hurt). The problem is that battery technology has NOT kept up with consumer needs, or IT development. Your battery is dying as soon as it leaves the factory. Your battery is dying every time you change it. Especially when it gets hot. your battery dies faster when it's cold outside. We need better energy storage medium. Period.
Buy the biggest battery I can find on eBay....
Use the fsck out of my phone all day and have plenty of battery left.
Problem solved.

I don't think the use of WiFi could be overstated.
On my Skyrocket, leaving Wifi on (indoors), it'll sip about 1% every hour. I go out and have 4G LTE on, it drinks up about 3% every hour.
Minimizing widgets also helps. I saw noticeably better battery after removing my facebook and Latitude widgets.
The screen also sucks up the most battery. Turn it off on every occasion. Just turning it off instead of letting it shut off by itself has made a difference for me.

Battery technology has kept up with usage. However, battery size in relation to the power draw, has not.
Compare the size of the back cover on your phone, with the size of the battery. Why is the battery this tiny little 2" square, when the phone is 5" tall and 2.5" wide? Why aren't batteries the same height/width as the phone? Why isn't the battery the same size as the back cover? Why aren't phone manufacturers optimising the size of the battery (meaning, making it as big as possible)?
It would be so nice if phone manufacturers would stop with this stupid "race to the thinnest" crap, and started:
- releasing phones that are actually comfortable to hold like a phone
- releasing phones with batteries larger than a pack of matches
your battery dies faster when it's cold outside.

Actually, keeping a battery cool makes it last longer, not drain faster.
